Continue backing up after restoring

I've recently bought a new macbook and restored a backup of imac via time machine.
I wanna time machine to continue backing up my new system to keep my files updated while not duplicating the file I had.
How can I get that? Changing UUID to make them the same? and how?

you can't do that. a new install creates a new TM backup sequence. there is no way around that.

  • Time machine wont continue backing up after restore

    hey all,
i had to do a restore after boot camp crashed on me and i lost my 10 Gig of space which i chose to partition. more to the point, i migrated from a time Machine backup to get my mac running the same way it was before i restored only one problem remains... when time machine tries to backup it does not carry on backing up from before i restored, instead it chooses to try and backup everything that is currently on my macs hard-drive (300 Gig) i just want it to backup changed files... just like before.
Other wise everything else is fine, time machine even works and i can go into the time machine interface and restore old files which i have deleted. This is such a nuisance can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I'm interpreting what you are saying as a reinstall of the system software followed by a migration of your user data from the Time Machine backup. The better procedure is to restore the whole system from the Time Machine backup (done by accessing the restore option from the menu on the install disk). I believe then you wouldn't have had this issue. The essence of the problem is that Time Machine thinks you have migrated user data to a new system and so is backing up the whole new system. I don't know what you can do about that. It is possible that the fact the system looks physically different (ie you don't have the partitioned hard drive you used to have) is a deal breaker for Time Machine.
But it's certainly worth checking the computer name. You find that by opening System Preferences and clicking the Sharing icon. At the top of the page is a box labelled Computer Name. That needs to be the same as the name when the backups were made. You can confirm the name when the backups were made by going into the backup volume via Finder. There will be a folder called Backups.backupd. Double click that and there is a folder with the Computer Name at the time of the backups. As I say, these have got to be the same for Time Machine to continue to use the same backup directory.

  • I cannot get iphone4s to restore to back up after restoring to factory settings.

This afternoon I reset my iphone 4s to factory settings. I made a back up via itunes (only way I ever do it) prior to the reset.
All my attempts to restore from that back up or any back up for that matter have not worked.
It will sync ok, transfering apps and music etc it has my emails all set up, but there are no records of contacts, messages, recent call log and so on- the most useful parts of a cell phone are not there and also none of the photographs or video that I had backed up are on there either. In my experience of switching my husbands handset from a 3 to a 4s ALL the info transferred/restored from the place he bakced it up from on the old handset.
I just keep going around in circles with it. It will appear to be restoring properly then when it reboots it takes me back to the factory settings set up "hello" screen.
What is happening? Itunes is updated and I have IOS 7.1.
    Thanks

I think what has happened is when I made the back up before the reset it didn't work.... It seems to have not actually backed anything up so effectively it's blank.... is there anyway any of the data is saved somewhere... I did do a back up, it shows that I have. a back up for that date and time but it is not loading anything onto my phone...?

  • I cannot back up after restored and updated my iPad

First, my iPad2 ran on ios 4.3.3. Then I backed up it and kept its library and setting
Next, I restored and updated to run on ios 5.1.1.
The system (on iPad) asked me to set up as a new one or back up via icould or itune.
I surely chose the last one because of an old ios.
The picture of usb cable and itune figure then shown, so I plugged in with my PC and launched itune programme.
Wonderingly, it didnt have any buttoms which i could back up (plz see the piture below)
Q : What should I do for backing up it into my iPad?
PS : I have already followed this http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/#section_7 but it does not help!!!!!!

That is exactly what I would do with this situation. Like I said I have seen this problem before but I know that I was not able to figure out what the problem was.
Make sure that you are running the latest version of iTunes on your PC - and you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes to see if that helps. I just don't know if that will work or if that is the reason that you are seeing this.

The wish list only works on apps you have to pay for. To get it tap the icon of the app you want to save. After it opens at the upper right corner is a box with a arrow. Tap that then tap add to wish list list in the box that opens.

  • My iphone4 is stuck on 'connect to itunes' after i have done a full back up and restore. Why won't it back up onto my iphone? I can see all the data on my computer but it wont sync to my iphone. Please help!

    Hello. Please can anyone help?
After having issues with my iphone4, I was told to restore it as it was probably a software issue.
So today I have made sure to back up to icloud, and onto my computer / itunes. After restoring my phone, you go through the steps on the iphone, to resore the back up from itunes there shows a symbol of the itunes and a wire to connect. I have connected to itunes and it will not sync. All the information is there on my computer, it goes through all the steps to sync, 1-6 then goes back to itunes. But none of the data is on my iphone, my iphone is still on the 'connect to itunes' symbol!
Am i doing something wrong? How can I get all my data back onto my iphone?
    Thank you.

Try on another computer with another USB cable.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
You can restore your backup whenever you want from iTunes or iCloud, depending where you made it.
Let us know if you succeeded or need any further help.
I believe you are missing the point. The OP has already restored from back up, but failed to include a specific app in the back up and is trying to recover data for it, which in this case is not possible.

  • Backed up files partially disappear after restore (Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows Server Backup)

    Dear all,
I am experiencing a problem with "Windows Server 2008 R2", using Windows Server Backup.
    Here's my setup:
    Server: RAID 5 Disk setup
    Backup:
By using Windows Server Backup (within Windows Server 2008 R2), C: and D: were fully backed up, with "System State" and "Baremetal Recovery" options selected. Backup went okay without any errors.
    Restore:
By using Windows Recovery Environment  (booted from Windows Server DVD), C: and D: were fully restored to the original partitions with "System Recovery" option found within Windows RE (without re-formatting partitions during restore). Restore
went OK without any errors. Rebooted, and system has been running fine.
    Problem:
After the restore, the system itself seems running OK; no BSOD, no crash, no visible errors.
However, our client insisted some files (around 6 to 7) which are related to the propriety software has "disappeared" right after System Recovery.
    Question:
Since Windows Server Backup is using "Volume Shadow Copy" technology which enables "live backup" of the running system, is it possible that some files will disappear (=restore error) after
    System Recovery?
I cannot really find any errors or warnings related to Windows Server Backup in the event log, through. No Windows-backup errors. No VSS errors, too.
Do anybody have experienced this kind of problem in the past?  Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, Ms. Mandy.
To make things clear, let me explain to you briefly:
    1. The "missing data" was backed up with "full system backup".
    2. After a system restore from the above backup image, as you mentioned, partitions has been overwritten with the partions' backup data in the Backup Data Set taken by Windows Server Backup. No error with backup. No error after restore, and reboot - system
    has been running fine.
    3. Although there was a report that the affected files(about 7 java exectables) were missing after the above restore operation, other aspect of system was running fine at the time of the report.
    4. I have checked the original backup data set - and voila, there ARE files which seems to gone after restore.
    5. When I used Windows Server Backup "on" Windows Server 2008 R2 normal environment (= NOT Recovery environment from DVD) and selectd ONLY these affected files to restore, these files could be RESTORED successfully, without any errors. SO... data
    was property backed up.
    > The recovery will overwrite the partitions so files created after the backup point will be missing.
I understand, and this is not the case this time, because the affected files are already present in the backup data set (= I have mounted the backup data as VHD, and I could clearly see them present in the mounted VHD file)
Plus, these files are completely restoreable via "selective file restore" in Windows Server Backup.
    Things I want to know/confirm:
    > The recovery will overwrite the partitions
If I understand this correctly, in case that the files in question are already present in the backup data set, these files SHOULD be restored after full system restore, right? (If these files could not be restored, Windows Server Backup SHOULD show some errors.)
What do you think, Ms. Mandy? :)
