Continue receiving a question mark

Hello!
Everytime I try to view a slideshow online, all I am able to see is a Blue "Q" with a question mark through it. I do have quick time, what is the problem? I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of weeks.
Thanks!

QT is not playing Flash files from Macromedia Flash Player 8 which could be the lastest version, not positive. I think QT can only play Flash files up to Macromedia version 5.
You need to uncheck the Flash Media preference in QT settings. QT settings>Browser>Mime settings...> Miscellaneous-Miscellaneous file formats. Then click Ok apply ok and quit and restart the browser or restart the computer for the change to take effect. You also need to have Macromedia installed.

  • Receiving a Question Mark at start up

I own a 13 inch Macbook, and my problem is that when I turn my computer on, only a white screen appears, then after a few moments a folder with a question mark appears on the screen. I cannot get past this screen, and I am really unsure how to fix the problem.

It means critical system files needed for startup are missing or damaged. You will have to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do so without erasing the drive if the drive is not corrupted:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Flashing question mark folder OS X 10.6.8.  Issue is not the drive itself.

Received flashing question mark folder on a MBP5,5 running 10.6.8.  Removed the drive and was able to boot on same machine with the drive plugged in as external USB.  Any idea as to what the issue may be?  It's not the drive itself.  Bad connector?  Going to update the drive to mountain lion this weekend to see if that resolves anything.

Actually, it is the drive in some way.
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. 2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

  • Sent Mail shows as "Delivered" but has question mark in icon

I have a user with a few sent emails to multiple parties that are listed as "Transferred" in the mail properties but have the question mark icon next to it. The definition of the question mark icon reads: "The item couldnt be delivered to the destination post office or it failed to transfer to the Internet."
Am I right to assume that these emails are successfully being sent out but are receiving the question mark icon due to an error on a recipient's end?
    Thanks!

  • Question Mark Folder at Start up. Tried Everything!

Hello I have a mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro. I am getting the question mark folder at startup.
I have read many message boards and tried all of the following things.
    1. Tried to go to boot into safe mode via the shift key at startup. Continues on to question mark folder.
    2. Tried to go to startup manager via the option key at startup. Goes to blank white screen with usable mouse pointer.
    3. Tried to clear PRAM via the Command / Option / P / R at startup. Restarts but still continues to question mark folder.
    4. Used OSX install usb drive to get to install screen. Could not find hard drive to install to.
    5. Put hard drive in external inclosure and successfully booted from it.
    6. Put in a new hard drive in computer just to check and attempted number 4 again. Same results.
    7. Purchased and installed new hard drive cable.
    8. Installed original hard drive. Still went to question mark folder.
    9. Put in new hard drive and install still could not find it.
    10. Returned and got another cable just to make sure that one was not bad. Same results.
Please somebody help me. What am I missing? What else can I try?

You'd better take your MacBook Pro to Genius Bar and tell them about your problem.

  • Question mark over Quicktime logo in Safari - MacBook

    Hi,
I have a black macbook on which FCP studio is installed and therefore QT Pro.
While browsing in Safari, (Latest 10.4.7 and Safari updates) and trying to access a link which plays streaming Qt's or just plain ones, I receive a Question mark over the Quicktime logo in place of the movie.
When right clicking the link and saving target, it downloads the movie and opens it in quicktime ok.
What the **** is going on.
On my G5 no problems to access these exact same links...
    Pretty annoying I would say
    ThanX
    Jean michel

Yeah, this is very common right now. Problem is not with Quicktime, but with the Shockwave plug-in in Safari. it is not yet native to intel-based Macs so it will not activate properly as is.
Unfortunately, there is nothing yet to update to, so you can either live with it as is or run Safari in Rosetta mode which will slow it down slightly, but give you all the web content properly.
    Try this:
    Quit Safari
Go to the Safari icon in Applications
    Ctrl-click the icon
    Go to "Get Info"
Click the box next to "Open using Rosetta"
    Open Safari
This will solve the problem until an Intel-compliant Shockwave plug-in comes out.

  • Flashing question mark folder, 3 times this week on my imac : (

My intel based 3.06 GHz imac this week is showing a flashing question mark folder. A friend says is that the hard drive is toast but well twice it was solved quickly. First time on monday I did commandoption+pr to reset NVRAM and it worked. Second time yesterday i pressed option during startup and i selected my mac os x volume. But well today nothing works : (
This flashing question mark is constantly showing up. any ideas how to force my imac to select the hard drive mac os x as the startup disk?
    this doesnt work:
    1. pressing option to select startup disk as i did yesterday.
    2. when trying to boot from mac os x install disc pressing c during startup the imac ejects the dvd.
    3. trying to start up in safe boot mode (pressing shift), verbose mode or single user mode all fails, just the flashing annoying question mark folder again.
I was reading that i could use ubuntu live-cd to transfer my data from ubuntu to an external hard drive. I downloaded, burned and then it does shows the ubuntu cd to install ubuntu (the mac os x install disc is ejected but the ubuntu cd works), but i really dont want to install ubuntu X_X I just want my imac back without installing any linux stuff.
I can do target mode with my other macs but the imac hd doesn't show up in the other macs, any way to force the HD to show via target mode in the other macs?
Any ideas? I guess my disk is failing and thats why i have been receiving these question mark folders 3 times this week.

if someone has the same issue, i just want to notice i solved it using ubuntu -linux- and transferring the files to an external hard drive from ubuntu, reinstalling mac os x again. When i did target mode with another mac the hard drive didnt appear in finder, but with ubuntu all worked great, i saw my files and then problem solved, i saved my data ; )
I did found annoying using ubuntu to solve this issue with my mac, but well i learnt something new, linux can also be useful when you don't want your data to be deleted as customer support told me they were going to do if i sent my mac.

  • I have received an Email with an attachment(IMG.0157.Mov) that loans but then becomes a circle with a question mark. What to do?

I have received an Email with an attachment(IMG. 0157.Mov)that loads but then becomes a circle with a question mark. What to do?

Assuming it's from a trusted source it's probably a video format that your system doesn't support.
If it will load in QuickTime Player, do a Get Info (⌘ i) to see what the specific format is. The .mov is a generic suffix a dozens or more video formats, the Get Info will give you the details.
    hope this helps

My emails are received with inexplicable question marks for spaces. This seems to only happen on some computers. Help!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I was looking over the help that you gave about the question marks in email responces, and wondered if you knew anything about fractions in the mail info.
When I get mail on my power book, the information as to whom it from and date etc. is all fractions. This is also happening in my address book. I've tried changing fonts to see it that was the problem and it hasn't seemed to work. Any other ideas?

  • Question mark around names received in Delegate email -- Outlook 2011

    Looking for some guidance... Office for Mac 2011 / Outlook / 14.2.4 / Exchange 2010 SP1
Just installed Update Rollup 7 v2 last weekend.
Yesterday, a client called me to say that Outlook was reporting database corruption. I ask her to choose the option to rebuild since relaunching Outlook 2011 brought her back to same screen. The rebuild seemed to complete successfully and she used Outlook
    the rest of the day.
This morning I came in to her office on an unrelated matter and she reported that she had a couple of items stuck in her outbox. I looked at them and, to make a long story short, found that the following is happening.
    For this story:
    * Steve delegates to Jo the ability to accept/decline meetings on his behalf.
    * Jo, naturally, gets a copy of all meeting requests.
    * Outlook 2011 is set up so that Jo is listed as a delegate for Steve.
    Reproducible Steps:
    1. I send a meeting request to Steve's email address. My email address is at a completely different FQDN.
    2. Jo gets a copy of that meeting request.
    3. If Jo opens up the meeting request email in Steve's inbox, the To: field shows "Lastname, Steve" which is how the display name is set on the Exchange server.
    4. If Jo opens the meeting request and looks at the To: field in Outlook 2011 in HER inbox, the name shows as "Lastname; Steve;". Both names are highlighted in orange with a white question mark. Hover over the names shows an "Unknown" presence. Opening the
contact for "Lastname" shows a completely different Exchange user. Opening the contact for "Steve" doesn't do anything.
    5. If Jo makes accepts or declines the invitation in HER inbox, the message gets stuck in the outbox and the Outlook logs an HTTP 500 error for every mail send attempt.
What I've attempted to resolve the problem:
    1. Deleted, created, rebuilt the various identities on the Mac.
    2. Changing the Directory Lookup URL within Outlook 2011 to the https:// FQDN.
    3. Followed instructions found elsewhere to delete the Mac-equivalent OAB and attempted redownload of the OAB. Searching for names in the company directory seems to work fine.
    4. Created a new Mac user and tested from there. (Same issue.)
    5. Followed instructions (here) to completely remove Office and reinstall. (Although I must have missed something because Jo's open windows and position were retained.)
    6. Set up a new Exchange account before and after reinstall and before and after installation of latest Office 2011 updates. (The download of Office 2011 available to me is Post-SP2. I understand that some folks on this forum have had to go back to a version
somewhere between SP1 and SP2. I cannot test this, at least right now.)
    Other bits of information:
    * The Exchange server (2010 inside SBS 2011) is not on-premises. This is a satellite office. Mac and PC Outlooks are configured to use Outlook Anywhere.
    * MCRA tests are successful.
    * I have tested on another Mac running Outlook 2011 14.2.1. Same problem.
    * I have tested another user who is also a Delegate. The other person doesn't use a Mac, but when I set her up in Outlook 2011 14.2.1, she has the same issue.
    * Mac is running Mountain Lion, 10.8.2. The Mac is about two weeks old.
    * I do not know that any of our other Mac users are experiencing anything similar, although I think that none of them are Delegates.
    * Mails directly from Steve to Jo show the proper name within the To: field
    * I have not tested setting up an auto-forward from Steve to Jo's mailbox, sending mail to Steve, and seeing what the To: field shows in Jo's copy. (Might be interesting.)
    * If Jo accepts/declines appointments from within Steve's Inbox directly, those acceptances and declines transmit successfully.
The most disheartening thing about all of this is that I see that other people are having the problem. Some of you have contributed to
a fairly large thread about it the Answers forum. However that is literally ALL of the information I can find in my searching. (The Answers guys asked me to post here.)
At the moment, I have a workaround in that Jo can accept/decline directly from Steve's inbox.
Any help -- any -- even new career thoughts are appreciated!!

    Simon,
    Here's an update:
I opened up a case with Microsoft PSS.
After speaking to the SBS team for a few days -- and they did a stellar job, in my opinion -- the tech suggested we speak to the Outlook for Mac team, just in case there was something there. The OFM team had one request:
Remove Jo from "Full Access" Exchange permissions on Steve's account.
Boom. That did it. Outlook 2011 (Mac) accepts/declines work fine now.
According to the OFM team, FA and Delegation permissions can conflict with one another over EWS. They have admitted that they are not doing a root-cause analysis. Perhaps, I can request that. However, I am pretty
pleased and relieved that I didn't have to rebuild mailboxes or something just as onerous.

The folder with a question marks is usually an idication that the Mac can't find the system file to boot from.
Since you never told us which system your Mac was running there is nothing more to say.
