Continued development for Symbian Anna?

All,
With the eminent release of the E6 and the Nokia/Windows future are any developers still interested in creating apps for Symbian Anna?  I'm more interested in 'useful' apps (book reader apps, checkbook/financial, database integration, etc.) instead of games and music.
I love my E62, but it's just so slow and of course has it's own data transmission limitations.  The E6 looks particularly exciting, but I would want to use it for several years to come as I don't upgrade phones that often.  Maybe I should limp along until a Nokia Windows business phone is released (a scary thought).
I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter.  Thanks!

2016 i read in june
The statement was "until 2016", if I recall, which might just as well mean that the last new Symbian models will be done in 2013, but sold (if anyone still buys)  and supported (spare parts, warranty, possibly some sw updates) for 2014, 2015.
Nokia's smartphone sales (all models combined, all Symbian) for the last quarter (Apr-Jun) already dropped by 30% with - for the first time in about 15 years - other companies bypassing Nokia in smartphone sales (Apple, Samsung).
Time will tell, of course, but the if Symbian phones are not selling (people are not buying), Nokia is not going to keep making them.

  • Patch for Symbian Anna released? (Nokia E7)

    Hi All
I am not sure what is going on.
My E7 was serviced by NOKIA care Point one week ago. Phone came back to me with Symbian Anna and all updates applied (I checked it same day the phone was back)
Today, when checking Applications>SW Update I noticed this:
    My Question is:
Is this update about patch for Symbian Anna?
Because here are details of my system:
I am confused because same set of updates came from Nokia when I was updating from Symbian^3 to Anna.
    Can any one explain this?

let me give you some more flashes:
    1. 7370 reset will tell you that all the 3 updates are required.
    2. after doing so, ovi store will not work.
    3. you will scour this forum and find out that you have to install 3 files, in proper sequence, reboot system.
    4. bad luck.
    5. then you will try 3 button reset
    6. WOW. ovi store will work after the similar 3 file anna update
    7. you will call nokia care line
    8. they will tell you that 3 button reset is not nokia recommended and that you will have to "reflash" your device
    9. you will lose your cool, especially after having come from the same place already
    10. then you will scream out loud in this forum.
    11. you will get used to the problem or you will optimistally wait for Belle.
whew... sometimes, i tend to think that if the above process is standard in one order or the other, there is no need for this forum! nokia can post this in a website itself as a
    if... then... else... code prose!

  • Nokia offers free download for Symbian Anna

Symbian Anna – the latest software update for Nokia’s Symbian smartphones – is now available for download in the Philippines.
Symbian Anna significantly enhances the user experience on the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7. A new user interface, virtual QWERTY keypad in portrait mode, split-screen messaging, enhanced Nokia Maps, better web browsing and stronger security are just a few of the improvements that people will be able to enjoy. Symbian Anna can be downloaded using the latest version of Ovi Suite (version 3.1.1) on a PC, or over-the-air directly to your smartphone.
"Nokia’s Symbian smartphones are used by millions of people around the world every day, addressing specific consumer needs and providing choices at many price points," said Mike Smith, Device Portfolio Manager, Nokia Philippines. "Symbian Anna represents a significant update to the experience of those users. It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Symbian, which still headlines the next 10 phones that Nokia will introduce over the next 12 months. Moreover, it signifies our thrust to continuously bring updates to the user experience and support for the software until at least 2016."
Below are some of the key features of the Symbian Anna:
New user interface: Symbian Anna brings a fresh new look and feel to the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7 with crisp icons and multiple usability enhancements. Typing on the touchscreen is much easier with a split screen, so you can see message threads, webpages, contacts or email view while typing on the virtual QWERTY keypad – now also available in portrait mode.
Better maps and navigation: Symbian Anna enhances Nokia Maps with better search functionality, new public transportation routes and the ability to check-in to favorite geo-social network sites like Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter. Users can also share their location via email and SMS, even to non-Nokia phones.
Faster browsing experience: A faster, easier-to-use browser delivering quicker page loads and improved device navigation allows people to connect more easily to their favorite sites on the go.
Stronger security for better business: Symbian Anna brings true business-grade security with improved data encryption on Nokia smartphones. Business users with a Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 or Nokia E7 can now easily and securely access their company intranet with IPSEC and SSL VPN enablers.
Near Field Communications (NFC) availability for Nokia C7: The Symbian Anna software update also activates the NFC hardware in the Nokia C7, so people can now simply tap their Nokia C7s together to share contacts, photos, videos and play games; easily pair with NFC-enabled accessories from Nokia and others; and read NFC tags to check-in and more.
Business users will also benefit from more features offered by Symbian Anna. Enjoy instant messaging and presence with Microsoft Communicator Mobile. E-mail enhancements are also provided, including full meeting request support.

  • Clarification on 025.007 for Symbian Anna products

    Hi all,
as you might have noticed we started rolling out a new update version for the Symbian Anna products.
025.007 only contains some error fixes and is therefore not a mandatory update for N8/C7/C6-01/E7/E6/X7. This means, that not all countries/operators will test and approve this version. The rollout is happening in waves, depending on lcoal testing and approval. If you want to get a notification when the update is available for your phone, please switch on the software update auto check. (You can find it under Options in your phone’s Software Update App.)

    yvonne

I received a symbian Anna service pack of size 1040KB which when installed did not change the version to 025,but said it was meant for usability improvements. It will give me better scrolling in messages and help me get quick location info on photos plus more(it was not mentioned what exactly is this "plus").However it added conversation appl, java run time and conversation server to my installed files list.

  • Symbian Anna missing split screen keyboard / no sp...

    Dear Nokia,
It's very good news to have symbian anna in my phone, nokia n8. IT's very well build.
However, in my country product code, Malaysia, I dont have split screen keyboard appear in every section that should appear in firmware. I have clean all my phone state in zero apps and i flash my n8 with symbian anna together with 1gb memory card content which means i have fresh , pure symbian anna without any system disturbances.
I update all symbian anna packages in software update, but split screen doesnt appear in most of my country variant.
Returning back to old PR 1.2, what we had was no smart dialler to easy contact calling. Then in symbian anna again, we still missing split screen keyboard which had been promised to be in symbian anna.
I have waited this feature for almost 8 months, but misssing this split screen is kind of dissappointment to us.
I need full explaination how exactly this missing feature happen, I wrote this not for myself, but for whole people who still miss split screen keyboard. I have fresh symbian anna, 0 apps installed, empty memory card, resulting no software conflicts.
THANKS YOU for Symbian Anna and we still waiting for this missing feature.

There is no split screen text input on any firmware that has Chinese. So Malaysian, Singapore, China and Indonesian phones all do not support split screen.  Futhermore, the pinyin input does not support portriate qwerty.
If you install a firmware version which does not support Chinese, you get split screen activated. I have tested both Thailand and Indian versions, both working with split screen.
Also, the 2 software updates that come after your have installed Anna will not add portrait qwerty.
Furthermore - this issue has NOTHING to do with swype. Please ignore any message your read which mentions swype.
I'm from Malaysia, didn't get it either.
This is very upsetting! Ten months of waiting, this is what Nokia has given us? This silly reason behind not including split-keyboard in our FW variant is not even a reason at all!
It's an obviously missing feature, and they seem to have not mentioned of this in any of their marketing videos or pages. Should have at least put a disclaimer saying it's not available for us. *Misrepresentation*

  • C7 symbian Anna 2/2 again...

Today my phone showed me two new updates: the Symbian Anna service pack and Symbian Anna 2/2. This is strange because I updated my phone to SA a month ago or so and it seemed to me that both parts were installed at that time. Does my phone show this update in error or is it a legitimate update that I should install?

anna service pack is a new additional update for symbian anna, when i updated mine with the service pack, my phone operate well and faster, no hanging. But the anna 2 of 2, may be u did not update it earlier after the symbian anna update. So i would advice u to do the update.

  • Symbian Anna Slovenian Language pack?

    Hi!
I'm wondering if there is slovenian language pack for symbian anna?
I've just updated my nokia n8 but there is no option to choose slovenian language...
Is there any option to return on previous slovenian operation system?
    Thanks in advance, Anze
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Anze,
Symbian Anna has been released with Slovenian language. Each Symbian^3 device has a set of languages based on the product code of the device. Each country where the device is sold may have several different product codes allocated to it, for example each color or operator variant has its own product code. However all product codes which are sold in Slovenia should naturally have language set which includes Slovenian language. You can see the product code of your N8 by pressing *#0000#. If you let me know what the product code is, I can check is it a Slovenian variant.
If your N8 previously had Slovenian language, one possibility is that your N8 product code isn’t actually one which includes Slovenian language because at some point it has been force flashed with some other product code’s software which includes Slovenian language set. This is not possible with software update methods Nokia offers to our customers so it has been done some other way.
As a result of this forced flashing, the language set of your N8 perhaps didn’t correspond with the product code of the device. When you then updated your N8 software to latest version, the official Nokia sw update application (phone sw update client or Nokia Suite) checked the real product code of your device and updated also the corresponding language set into your N8 as it supposed to do.
It’s not possible to downgrade the software to previous version and it actually wouldn’t solve this issue if it’s related to product code as I suspect. You could contact the retailer from whom you purchased your N8 to get genuine Slovenian variant or contact local Nokia Care Center to see is there anything they could do.

  • Australian Symbian Anna release

    Hi Skyee,
Could you please make clear the processes going on as to the intended release date for Symbian Anna for Australian N8, C7 etc vanilla handset users? Will Symbian Anna be released in Australia for vanilla handsets before Symbian Anna is released for non vanilla handsets? As I am reading it in this forum, it seems that those of us (of which I am one) who have vanilla handsets, have to wait until the various carriers in Australia test/approve Symbian Anna before Symbian Anna is released for vanilla handsets. Is this the case and could this be clarified asap?
    Cheers.

Symbian Anna for Australia is slated for release in the next couple of weeks... Check this out...

I have a Nokia N8 Belle and I don't like the big widget for email, so I would like install the old email widget for Symbian Anna for my N8 Belle.
How can I get the wgz file, please?

The widget is part of the mail application, and as such you cannot have the updated mail application with the old style widget. Unfortunately as the mail application is built into the ROM it's not possible to replace.
    Sorry.

  • Swype for Symbian ^3, Anna, Belle, Belle Refresh i...

Swype for Symbian ^3, Anna, Belle, Belle Refresh is EXPIRED. What should I do?
Swype is expired irrespective of the firmware on your device, please help.
Symbian connected me to the world, to my dreams.. Thank-you Nokia

Symbian^3 phones are not compatible with SymRDP software.
You may see that these phones are NOT included in Compatible Devices List for SymRDP software.
SymRDP will close automatically on most non-compatible phones.
There is no VNC nor  TeamViewer remote access for Symbian^3.
You may check if anyone is interesting in developing software for Symbian^3. You may check www.rdmplus.com as they used to develop some Java based Remote Access clients for Symbian.
Most likely, the bottom line is – if you need Remote Desktop access, then you should not use Symbian^3 phones and use some real smartphones instead as all of them have support for RDP and VPN access and many have support for access via SMB protocol as well (file sharing).

  • No autofocus on symbian anna for E7??

    Hello,,
I  did the update on my E7 nokia symbian anna  and there isn't autofocus, Does anyone has the same problem?
    thanks

@reinob - If you are coming from an E71 like me you simply expect that an 8mp camera in Nokia's flagship is much better. When making closeby pictures the E71 3.2mp was much better which is in my opinion a joke. I do not care if the phone uses autofocus or not. I simple expect good pictures which is not possible at short range.
The same goes with Lotus notes support -> Not supported in Ovi suite??? All my former communicators had this so I did not even think about off checking this. Luckely PCsuite is still working.....

  • Missing features in Symbian Anna (Is it only me? o...

I installed the Symbian Anna Update which was released yesterday (18th August 2011) and got trough the update process despite the difficulties the Software Updater in my phone caused. After the update I noticed some features are missing:
(Not Adobe reader or Quickoffice, they were available after the update.)
    1. The animated pop-up notification that I got when I connected to the internet is missing in Symbian anna. (It's really annoying because I can't actually see what access point my phone is using unless I look harder.)
    2. The Games folder is missing (The Icon with the game controller on it)
    3. No wallpaper in the Default "Midnight" Themes.
    4. Homescreen Rotation is a bit jumpy. (The operators name doesn't appear with the rotation animation. It jumps in)
If anyone encountered any of these problems, please let me know. If you have a solution I'd really appreciate it. Or if these things are normal. Well I'll wait for a future software update from Nokia.
I have a Nokia C7-00, I tried reinstalling the Software update and Soft-Resetting but non of it worked. Just so you know.
    Thanks,
    Lasiru.

    Hi,
Seems that you have downloaded an old version of OWB. The new version is 9.2, not 9.0.2 and it is as far as I know only available as a standalone download.
The version of Developer Suite currently on OTN is more than a year old.
