Continuing Variable Speed Probs

This is becoming major.
I have trashed prefs, re-installed FCE but I am still having the problem of clips changing speed from what I set (usually 50%) to some increibly sped up setting labelled "variable" that often squeezes the entire raw capture into the clip length
This usually happens in this instance: Select a clip, set a speed change. Copy that clip and stack it on top to apply effects like colorkey, etc. Render. Playback. Everything hunky dory. Go on with the project ... go back, and that top clip now has a new speed setting.
This has also happened with applying speed values of more than 100%. Occasionally happens to an "unstacked" clip but more often if the clip is stacked, be it a copy or not.
I dont remember this happening much in the past but now it is popping up frequently. I keep having to go back and check all my speed changed clips to make sure that are "safe". I use this effect a lot, so it is a major pain
It has been suggested to me that this is some kind of glitch that comes up in FCP (I am running FCE HD) and the only thing you can do is work around it be exporting the speed changed clip as a QT and bringing it back in ... wow, what a pain
I do this for a living and if I cant fix this prob soon, I may have to switch apps soon ... tho I would rather not.
Sorry, I've posted this prob before but it really is serious, so any suggestions would be most helpful
I've made a Bug Report to Apple about this, but I need help now
Thanks

Thanks Tom
If you are referring to the original captures, I capture entire DV tapes at a time, so yes, they are longer than 10 minutes
If you are referring to the editied clips to which the speed is applied, they are short, usually no more than 20 or 30 secs
I'm wondering is this is the root of the prob; I've only started capturing whole tapes in the last year. That would make some sense, cuz sometimes what I see is an entire tape content jammed into the 20 sec clip
Guess I'll try capturing in smaller chunks to see if that makes a difference. Sort of inconvenient for me but if it works ....

  • Exporting variable speed slo mo to Motion for optical flow, how?

    Greetings,
I have FCP 7 and Motion 4. I am new to using Motion. I want to either export a variable speed clip from FCP to Motion and add the optical flow feature, or build a variable speed change in Motion, but I can't figure out how to do either!
The 20 second clip is in reverse-slow-mo, and progressively gets slower (from -38% to -4%) as set in FCP using keyframes. When I "send" the clip & it opens in Motion, the in-out points aren't recognized, (the whole unedited clip shows up) and when I set the timing to "variable" in the inspector, (under "timing", for time remap) the clip disappears in the timeline altogether.
I've also tried to create a QT of the clip as 100% but in reverse (just to have less to build in Motion) but I cannot figure out how on earth to use the graph in Motion (under time remap, variable speed) to create a variable speed change to progressively slow down. This is the key issue for me-- how to create variable speed change in Motion??
I tried one other thing in Motion, the "add behavior", and added "Speed Change", couldn't figure out this method either-- how to make clip progressively slow down, and also how to apply the optical flow to that speed change (seems optical flow only works with time remap method?) Any help would be greatly appreciate.
    AKJ

Although it does occur, the media isn't ALWAYS mangled... did you try workflow 1 above?
As far as I can tell from your description, baking the speed change in before sending to Motion is not going to work as the clip will already be retimed.
I agree, changing versions mid project is a bad idea. When faced with this recently, I bought a $50 500gb hard drive, installed Leopard and the new version of Final Cut Studio onto it, booted into that drive, opened up a COPY of my project in the FCP7 and did what I needed.
I found no issues, so just continued in FCP7. However, if I did find issues, I would have done only what I needed the new version for, then rebooted back into the drive with FCP6, opened my original project, then imported the results.

  • Suppressing table continuation variable and other table questions

    Hello all,
Is there any way to suppress the table continuation variable from being converted? Is the only way to conditionalize all the occurences in Framemaker?
Also, for some reason, the Framemaker to Robohelp paragraph mapping for my table caption paragraphs aren't being converted properly. Do table captions need to be treated differently from other paragraph tags?
    Thanks.
    Sue

James, I'm also curious about using a period after the table title, as I can't remember noticing periods after titles in any publications -- is it required by a specific style guide? My Chicago Manual of Style (12th, can't put my hands on 13th or 14th at the moment) does not use periods after titles, an in fact it eschews repeating the title, even. (ref. 12.17)
In FM 7.2 the table continuation variable is a bit schizophrenic, because while the variable content is suppressed (as expected) on the first page of the table, the variable symbol's on-screen horizontal space is not. If the variable's space had been suppressed it would be possible to do
    Table 1. XYZ Operation//var//.
and thus have the result that you would like. Very annoying...

  • Would like Table Continuation Variable added to a paragraph style, such as to a table title

My groups uses both Frame 7.2 and Frame 9 and we would like to include the Table Continuation variable to our table title paragraph tag definition so that we don't have to manually add the variable. Is this possible now? If so, how?
    Thanks

    Hi Sherri,
I guess it is possible. I am attaching a screen shot you can follow that.
this is for Framemaker 9 and I am not sure about framemaker 7.2
    I hope this helps you.,

  • Pushing the limits of continuous high-speed DAQ + processing, with PXI-6115 + PXI-8360

    Hi all,
I'm trying to do continuous high-speed data acquisition + processing. I currently have:
    Chassis: PXI-1042Q
    AI card: PXI-6115 (x2)
    Link: PXI-8360
PC CPU: Intel Xeon W3503 (dual-core, 2.40 GHz)
    RAM: 4 GB
The idea is to continuously grab 8 channels' worth of analog inputs, scan for "events", and if found, log the events to disk.
My client would like to use the maximum sample rate of 10 MHz, but I found that above 5 MHz, DAQmx Read.vi can no longer keep up (e.g. at 6 MHz, it takes 110 ms to read 100 ms' worth of data).
Im thinking of getting beefier components, but I'm not sure where the bottleneck is. Here are some thoughts:
    1) The MXI Express link
The PXI-8360 is rated for a sustained throughput of 100 MB/s.
I'm not sure how big the data is. PXI-6115's ADC is 12-bit. Does that mean each datum transferred through the MXI cable is 1.5 bytes? Is the data padded? Or is it 8 bytes per datum, because Dbls are being transferred?
    2) The CPU
In Resource Monitor, I notice that the CPU usage is 0% at 60 kHz, 8% at 61 kHz, and 50% at 70 kHz (meaning that one core is maxed out). I'm surprised that it keeps up all the way until 5 MHz though.
What causes this high CPU usage? Is it due to the conversion of the data into 1D array of waveforms?
    3) Something else?
Have I missed something completely? Is what I'm describing even possible?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hello,
Each sample will take up 2 bytes, 12 bits data + 4 empty bits. so the PXI-PCI 8360 is only able to transfer a maximum of 50S/s in this case.
Also, because the PXI bus is shared among all of the cards, two PXI 6115 cards will be trying to transfer 80MS/s or 160MB/s.
Finally, since the PXI 6115 are DAQ family cards, their specifications aren't really written for continuous data acquisition at the upper end of their sample rate, but I'm interested to know if you can get up to 10MS/s with only one card operating at a time?

  • Copy and Paste Variable Speed Ramp Curves?

Is there any way to copy and paste variable speed ramp curves from one shot to another.
I've got a rough cut with lots of speed ramps, and now I have to conform renders that came back from Color (pre-prepped with out ramps) to the offline with the same frame ramps.
I can't seem to do it any other way than by eye match, which is less than great.

Right click a clip in the Timeline that has the settings you want to transfer. Choose Copy.
Right click a clip in the Timeline that you want to transfer the settings to. Choose *Paste Attributes > Speed.*

  • Can't select "Variable Speed" for Still Image Motion

I am using FCP 5.1 to add motion to still images. I've placed my still images on the timeline and added the appropriate keyframes in the Motion tab of the Viewer to Scale, Rotate, and move the stills on screen to my liking. But the speed is locked to "Constant," and I want to change that.
Specifically, am rolling a still image on-screen, freezing it in the middle of the screen a few seconds, and then rolling it off-screen. Doing this is easy: I just add a keyframe and type in the off-screen coordinates, then add another keyframe and type in coordinates somewhere on screen. But I want to vary the speed that the image rolls on-screen, so it moves on-screen quickly but then gradually slows down until it finally stops (freezes) in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately, the "Setting" popup menu under "Time Remap" in the Motion tab of the viewer is grayed out and locked to "Constant Speed" (and yes, my still image clip is indeed selected and being displayed in the view). I cannot figure out how to unlock that popup so I can select variable speed.
I can choose Variable or Constant speed just fine for any imported "video" clips -- only still images are locked to Constant for some reason. Is this just a feature limitation of FCP 5? Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

Why so much sarcasm in this FCP forum, Studio X?
Yes, it was in the manual, which by the way is quite large. And I didn't say how long it took me to spot that in the manual either -- a long time. I didn't spot it the first time I had read through that section (yes, I had read it before). And the fact is, you didn't know it either, otherwise you may have cared to point it out (for not only myself, but for others reading this forum too).
I participate in numerous other forums on other sites. Many times, people ask questions that are very simplistic to me -- I know the answers and I know those people putting forth the questions could easily have looked up the answer. Nevertheless, I take time to be helpful to others. For truly, some day I may be in their shoes, lacking time to read every part of every manual out there.
I am therefore thankful to those who likewise respond in a tactful manner to my queries, with the productive aim of helping others rather than condemning them. Thank you, David Harbsmeier, for being consistently positive and very helpful in this forum!

  • Set variable speed?

    Help!
I am having trouble plotting variable speed in Final Cut Pro.
I go to 'time map' and look at setting keyframes to control speed but it seems to be really imprecise and random. There doesn't seem to be a way to set precise values eg. setting the clip to ramp from 0% to 400% or down from 100% to 50%. Or even set 1000% to 3000%.
And when i plot keyframes in 'time map' it doesn't seem able to tell what the speed value is that's being set.
    Any ideas?

Chances are you'll need to export out the sections of a clip that you want to remap.
FCP will look at the entire clip to extrapolate the remapping.
IOW, if you're trying to remap a :30sec section of a 20 minute clip, FCP will apply it's remapping to the entire 20 minutes.
So just export out your :30 (with a bit of handles for good measure), bring it back in and remap that.
Post back if it doesn't fix it for ya.

  • Variable speed music player

i'm a musician who'd like to play back songs at variable speed BUT with pitches preserved...i know there are CD players that will do this - what about itunes?

    Its simple:
public function MP3Pitch( url: String )
    _target = new ByteArray();
    _mp3 = new Sound();
    _mp3.addEventListener( Event.COMPLETE, complete );
    _mp3.load( new URLRequest( url ) );
    //in your main fla call
    var song:MP3Pitch  = new MP3Pitch("mySong.mp3");
//this points at an mp3 file that is in the same directory as your published swf

  • Variable speed in FCE

Can one create a variable speed clip? Say start a 100@ at the beginning of the clip and end at 75%?

No, the ability to keyframe speed is a function reserved for Final Cut Pro. However, you can try using Piero's [Time Remap|http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/TimeRemap.html] filter to get a similar effect.

  • Continued variable in tables

Complicated, but ... I don't want a title to appear for table information, but I do want (continued) to appear on following rows that are split. I've created a blank title and inserted the variable Table Continuation. However, I want to modify (Continued) to include a ConceptName and a TaskName to keep users notified as to where they are.
How can I add these paragraph tags to the Table Continuation variable?  I've tried <$paratext[ConceptName]> and several other combinations. This results in the second page of the table bearing (Continue) <$paratext and tweaks on that haven't proved successful. Can anyone suggest a way to do this? It seems so easy, but then I suppose I wouldn't be pleading for help!

Are you mixing up FrameScript and FrameMaker?  FrameScript is a 3rd party utility tool that works with FM (both 8 and I'm pretty sure with 9 now), and the FDK is from Adobe directly.
"Fairly easily" is determined only "in the eye of the beholder", in other words if you need the capability and you've got the budget to hire a programmer to do it, or you've got the in-house talent to dive into it, then sure, it could be done.
Lots of considerations to think about, though -- I'd suggest taking a look at the Framescript users forum, here:

  • Error Communicating with Camera (only during variable speed playback)

I have my camera, a Sony DCR TRV480 plugged in via firewire and am playing on the camera and watching on the monitor. This works fine unless I use the "variable speed playback" option on the camera to slow down the video. Then Imovie goes blue and gives me the "error communicating with camera" message.
My videos are way too numerous and the details of fine motion too important for importing and then playing back on slow-motion to be a practical option, so please do not suggest that.
What I need is to see in Imovie what I see on the Cameras LCD.
Any ideas if its a problem with Imovie or related to limitations of firewire or the camera output or what?

Obviously, when you slow down the video, the camera isn't sending a DV compatible signal through Firewire. Since iMovie is designed to handle only DV, iMovie goes blue.
There is nothing you can do about that.
You may try "JES Deinterlacer", which produces better slow motion than iMovie. It's free.

  • Table continuation variable: philosophical question

My apologies in advance if this is too off-topic.
The Table Continuation variable (and its companion, the Table Sheet variable) are useful tools. But how
    i necessary
    are they?
I ask because using the variables involves a certain amount of overhead (particularly the Table Sheet variable, when used in a table footer), and I'm not convinced the effort is worth it. These are just software user guides we're doing here, not aviation specs or military schematics. I can't imagine that our users won't be smart enough to flip the page to see if there's more information.
Within my current group there are opposing forces on the necessity of using these variables. Does anyone here know of any studies into this? Or do any of you have any particular insight that will drive this standoff one way or another?
    Thanks!

    Ed:
I find that the optimal place for a table continuation variable is in the table's caption, if the table's design includes a caption.
Alternatively, I place it in one of the columns in a table's heading. In this case, I place it in one or the table's wider columns at the extreme left or right side of the table; for example, a "Description" column. A wide column ensures that FrameMaker will properly display the variable...
I generally choose to use table continuation variables because I assume that a reader of the technical documentation I create will quite probably "dive bomb" into the middle of a doc looking for something; the table continuation variable helps them recognize that the table they've dived into begins on a preceding page...
    Cheers & hope this helps,
    Riley
