Continuous, source/destination selectable, time-stamped backup: WonderSave?
I've spent a significant amount of the last six years (5000+ hours) in front of my Mac putting together a book. I'm very careful about backups: documents are saved several times an hour while working on them, then backed up twice daily to five hard drives in rotation, then weekly to two sets of DVDs. Never lost an ounce of work -- until yesterday. Something happened to several of the documents I was working on before I did a backup. They all had a size of 0 bytes, and when I did backup...
In two hours redoing the work, I had the documents back but was I annoyed at the waste of time. So I need a piece of software which I am naming WonderSave. This is how it works:
*Step 1*: I fire up WonderSave and it allows me to select any area (the Source) on any of my hard drives that I want WonderSave to keep an eye on. This selection process is similar to how I can select multiple areas when using OSX to Find.
Step 2: I select where I want the backups to appear (the Destination).
Step 3: I tell WonderSave how long to keep the files before deleting them.
In operation, every time I save into my Source, WonderSave simultaneously saves a time-stamped copy in my Destination. For example, if during the day I work on 15 files in four different programs and save a total of 67 times, I will find a have 67 files in my Destination.
Gladden my heart, someone, by telling me the real name of this wonderful piece of software.
No, not the ones I mentioned. You could upgrade to Leopard and use Time Machine which does backup every hour. The ones I mentioned can be scheduled to backup as frequently as you want, but this imposes some overhead for constantly checking the drive for changed files. Not overly efficient.
There are two backup programs that do that, however, called TimeDrawer and NTI Shadow. They do not create bootable clones, but they do perform versioned backups as you describe. You will find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
There is no backup solution that does everything. You may need to implement more than one to accomplish both automatic backups when a document is saved and create bootable clones. For the latter there are some good alternatives:

Restore iPhone from archived, time-stamped backup
Hi all,
Long story, but after having the battery of my iPhone 5 replaced I now need to restore from an archived, time-stamped backup that iTunes created when I last restored my Phone. Current iTunes version, IOS 8.1.3, up-to-date Windows Vista.
I can't figure out how to get iTunes to see that backup and let me use it ... only the current incremental backup is visible in iTunes.
Any help will be hugely appreciated! TIA - JohnUninstalling & reinstalling iTunes won't have any benefit.
Assuming you haven't done it already go to Edit > Preferences > Devices and tick the box against Prevent iPod, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.
How many folders are listed under %AppData%\Apple Computer?
How many backups under Edit > Preferences > Devices?
This is how my three backups are represented by three folders:
Assuming there are two folders, but only one backup listed I would close iTunes, copy the entire Backup folder to another location for security, then rename the folders so that the dated folder replaces the current one. In the example above I would probably add -Bad to the second folder name, and then remove -20141204-010305 from the third. When you restart iTunes it should be possible to restore the data from your older backup set.

It seems I am not alone in the failure of installing Mountain Lion. I am using a mid 2010 MacBook Pro, had Lion installed, tried upgrading to Mountain Lion. Like so many others I am getting errors, can't repair disk, etc. I do have Time Machine backups, and can go select the most recent one, but when I get to the screen to select a destination, there is nothing to select.
What are my options for restoring to my last good backup? My Lion OS was also from the app store. I believe I had either Leopard or Snow Leopard when I first bought my MBP, but not 100% sure. I am just extremely frustrated and while I know I have been doing backups to the Time Capsule, if I can't get one of those to restore, will I be able to get to the files it backed up if I have to completely erase and start over with a lower OS?At some point I was finally able to get the recovery from the Disk Utility menu, once I threw in an older OSX DVD (Snow Leopard.) Once I could get to my files, I copied just the folders/files I wanted from my HD to an external drive, then went back in through Disk Utility, erased everything and when I went to reload, it did an online recovery and actually grabbed my copy of Mountain Lion and installed it without a hitch. I figured it was going to reload the older OS but apparently since I had already purchased Mountain Lion, the online recovery retrieved that from the cloud?? Anyway, once that installed and I added back on what I wanted, it's like I have a new MacBook. No other issues once I installed. I did have to get an update for one of my programs, Final Draft, but so far everything else is running. Seems the erase and clean install was the best way to go. Thanks!

OS X Reinstall & Selective Time Machine Backup
Hi,
I want to reinstall OS X and do the following:
1) Keep my settings, data, documents, contacts, photos, etc
2) Get rid of unneccessary applications, Paralles, MS Office, etc
I have a Time Machine backup of my whole system, so the question is:
Can i "selectively" put documents, contacts, etc. back from Time Machine WITHOUT moving the whole junk back that I don't want?
Any help is greatly appreciated!Hopefully, you have realized by now that the price you paid for pirated/cracked software was too high, even if it was free, & it has no place on your Mac. If you do not intend to buy legitimate copies of such things, do not ask for help here regarding any specific problems they cause: the terms of use require that we stay within the law so we cannot discuss anything like that.
What we can say is that:
1) An Archive & Install with the "Preserve User and Network Settings" option is unlikely to be a good choice for you because it may preserve files that should be replaced. (See Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature for more about which files are preserved.)
2) You can use the Erase & Install option, followed by using Migration Assistant with a Time Machine backup to selectively transfer:
• one or more user accounts & some or all the subfolders of the home folder of each account
• all or none (but not your choice) of the items in both your root level Applications & Library folders
• all or none (but not your choice) of any other root level files & folders you have added to your startup drive
• all or none of each of three sets of system wide parameters: network, time zone, & sharing settings
This will give you a "clean" install to start with, but you must be careful not to transfer anything tainted by the pirated/cracked software when using the assistant or you may reintroduce the problems you are trying to cure. Without knowing the details of the pirated/cracked software you have installed (& really, only the people that cracked or distributed it know that) we cannot give you specific help with that.
3) You can use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a single Windows partition on your startup drive if you partitioned it with this assistant to begin with. Note that this will destroy any documents stored in this partition. -

Missing folders on source drive after time machine backup
This morning I noticed folders starting with 'S' to 'Z' was missing from iMac in a particular directory. I have time machine enabled with Apple time capsule. Last successful backup was around 5pm yesterday. I've since recovered the missing folders from time machine. Any ideas what might have caused this. I've been using time machine for the last 2 years without any issues. The logs all look fine. Software versions: time capsule 7.4.2, airport utility 5.5.1, 1TB time capsule.
Thanks
Chrisyou haven't lost anything. that's just the gigabyte discrepancy as i suspected. the advertised capacity of 500GB is measured in decimal GB while the actual capacity is measured in binary GB. This is a well known bait and switch used by all hard drive manufacturers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
The result is that a 500Gb drive will actually format to about 466Gb. -
Continue Time Machine backup on MacBook Pro Retina
Yesterday evening I copied my Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro to my MacBook Pro Retina. When this was done, the icon of Time Machine was gray. When I tried to make a Time Machine backup, it wasn't possible to continue with the (old) Time Machine backup; instead there was made a new (complete) backup (and I stopped that after a few seconds). I didn't get an opportunity to choose "inherit backup".
So my question: is it possible to continue a Time Machine backup of a (normal) MacBook Pro on a MacBook Pro Retina? (I don't need to use the backup on the normal MacBook Pro, but I want to be able to search in my old files using Time Machine, not via Finder and searching in the folders of the old Time Machine backup). The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies. -
Continuously update time stamp on main panel
Hello,
I am trying to continuously update/show the time stamp based of a fixed starting point. I made a SubVI, to accomplish the task, however, how can I go about using this subVI into a main program? Alternatively, how can I continuously update the timestamp on the main VI?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
hiNi.

Update timestamp.llb 25 KBWhy you want to read time stamp from Subvi. If you’re not doing anything in subvi (except time) then there is no use. You can simply update your time in Main VI ( as per my previous post).
Please check this VI. I hope this will help you.

Time machine backup failed fatal error 54
I have a brand new hard drive and when started to restore one of my Time Machine backups I kept on getting a Fatal 54 error. I used another hard drive and received the same errors. I tried four different Time Machine backup choices with the same results.
I took the hard drive out and ran repair disk on it and still received the following errors. Any suggestions so I could restore using my Time Machine backups would be appreciated.

Imac won't restore from time machine backup after HD (hard drive) recall replacement
I have an imac bought in 2011, running Snow Leopard. It required an HD replacement due to the 1 TB Seagate recall - the replacement was done by a certified Apple repair station yesterday. Before the guy left he started a backup/restore from my latest time machine backup set. It failed. I attempted it two times and got error messages that it failed and the computer needed to be restarted to try it again. No luck. I called the guy back and he told me to call Apple Care. Not thrilled about that response since the guy had just left my house I did what he told me to do. (A quick sideline here: I recognize that a time machine backup should be no big deal and SHOULD work everytime, but it doesn't. It irks me that Apple is replacing my HD through no fault of mine and yet they don't allow the restore of data to be a "covered" expense in this process - this isn't just because this was an authorized repair guy - the Apple store would have done the same).
Back to the issue. When I called apple care they pretty much had me try the same thing again with an earlier back up set. To my knowledge, it didn't work. I say this because it looked like it was working and when I came back to the imac later, it had restarted and once again booted to the OSX install. (The boot disc is still in the imac). When I tried to boot from another location, one did not show up to boot from so I assumed that the data didn't transfer and it forced another restart. So, I tried something else. I tried to re-install the snow leopard OSX without using the restore function. That appeared to work and then when the machine restarted it asked if I had another mac and I chose the option to get the files/apps/etc. from my time machine backup. The computer chose what I can only assume is the most recent backup set (It chose what I know to be a subfolder that appears under the dated backup folder - Macintosh HD--which btw is confusing seeing as that's always the name of the HD on the imac). I again stepped away from the computer so it could do its thing for two hours. When I returned, I was back to the MAC OSX screen that asks you to choose a language. There were no more options to choose DISK UTILITY or RESTORE FROM BACKUP, etc. When I clicked on English it took me right back into the screen where you say whether you have another Apple that you want to transfer data from. I realized that the imac must have restarted and I assumed maybe it was because the boot disk was still in - except how do you get the disc to eject? I also initially assumed that the backup had somehow failed again and triggered a restart. I tried to choose the option to just set up the machine without transferring data and when I got to the choose a name for your HOME folder message I tried to enter the same name I had it as before and it wouldn't allow me to do so, saying that that name was already in use. I also tried a different name and that didn't work either - got the same message (I assume if it is not the same name that it won't sync up with the time machine data from the backup set). So, I almost tried the "select time machine backup" option again until I looked at my HD space. Clearly, there is space that has been used. HD space was 997 at the start and now it's 636. My initial thought is to somehow get back into the setup area where I can use disc utility and erase the whole thing and then start over but 1) I don't think it's going to work even if I could get back there 2) I have no idea how to get this thing to reboot into that mode 3) I can't get the boot CD out to even try to restart to see if this thing did what it was supposed to, SO NOW I AM TOTALLY STUCK! I have not called Apple Care back because quite frankly they were useless the first time. I have a call into the repair guy but who knows how much help he will be. In the mean time, I have a million things to do and a computer that isn't working - Whoever said Apples never have issues needs to be seriously censored!
A few other notes: I use Time Machine Editor to run my backups weekly. It was set up that way from the get go by an Apple rep who came to my house to get us up and running. Editor should not effect the way that time machine does its work, so I doubt there is relevance but thought it worth mentioning.
One other note is that the Apple Care agent tried to have me do something called a "Source" something or other from the disk utility screen but when she realized that my backup file (shown by date) contained many other sub files (11-27-12/MacintoshHD/MyNamesIMAC/etc.), it was not possible to run this operation - thus we aborted. Sorry I don't remember the name of the process and unfortunately now can't access that option to go find it.
If you can help me, I would be eternally grateful! I am open to having a phone conversation if you are willing to give me your email to mail you my number. I have so much work to do this week and this was the last thing I needed. Did I mention this was supposed to be EASY?
I used to be quite the geek with my PC - still on the learning curve with the mac but not enjoying it. I am fairly tech savvy and I can follow instructions for a step by step solution if you've got one.I got a recall and had the drive replaced. I have retored 3 timesa dn even had apple do the job and it is still not right. I still can't get a simple ghost of the data from time machineback tot he new drive.
This is Apple's explaination as taken from their web page.:
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
I even posted this information on the community and apple removed it... because they don't like the:
Off-topic or non-technical posts
Non-constructive rants or complaints
But here is my experieince:
Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH NO, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with no specific error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, he'll ix it just like it was. PROMISES it'll be fixed.
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and THEN did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... NOT RUNNING right!!!... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still no rsolution - to missing "settings". Seems there are THREE WAYS TO RESTORE (according to apply tech)... Running MIGRATE ASSISTANT and being able to choose your files, including settings, "R" RESTORE after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM. I think this is done via the disk Utilties application.
So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up since permissons are screwed and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, like having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! Very upset!!!
I did my first restore just like they said and now an 10 days without proper machine. Just FYI. I thnk I am going to make the store do the tech work so I have somthing to fall back on. -
Recover OS X using Time Machine Backup
Hi All,
I have created time machine backup for my entire system after a clean install of Mountain Lion on Aug. 01, 2012 to a 16 GB USB drive. Now, as per my discussions with Apple Care, they told me that using Time Machine backup I can get back into the state where I created the backup (including Mountain Lion files). This is fine with me and I know that I can only get the files back for the time I created that backup.
Although, I don't want to restore my system now but just for being on safer side, I tried to learn the process of recovery. I followed the steps below to get into recovery mode:
1. Press the option key while system started.
2. Selected Recovery Mode from the available options.
3. Selected Time Machine Backup from the recovery mode.
Now, system displayed me the time machine backup for Aug. 01, 2012. I choose the one and click on next.
Now, here I have a few questions:
There was a drop down disabled on top that says "Restore From" and the option selected was "Machintosh HD on Ashish's...". What is this option? Is it telling me from where I had created the backup or it's telling me from where the system restore will take place?
Secondly, let's say that my whole machine was corrupted due to some reason and I am not able to start OS X then do Time Machine backup also restores my OS X?
Thank you in advance,
Regards,
-Ashish SharmaSecondly, let's say that my whole machine was corrupted due to some reason and I am not able to start OS X then do Time Machine backup also restores my OS X?
It restores what was on the source volume when the backup took place, apart from logs, caches, the contents of the Trash, and whatever you choose to exclude. If the OS was corrupt when you backed up, it will still be corrupt after you restore. -
HT201250 Can I copy a time machine backup from one mac to another?
I have two Mac Book Pros that I use for work - I have one at home and one at work. I'd like to copy the contents and setup from my work Mac to my home Mac using a time machine backup, and then continue to use the time machine backup back at work. I.e. the time machine would only be used with the home Mac to copy over the contents and setup of my work Mac.
Can I just do a straight time machine back up in my 2nd (home) mac, or will this override the back up I have from the 1st (work) machine?
Thanks!Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Note that you can restore a Time Machine backup on all the Macs you want, always that the Mac uses the same or a newer OS X version than the one that had the Mac you used to make this backup.
Also, you can back up different computers to the same Time Machine drive. In this case, Time Machine will create different folders in your Time Machine drive for each computer, so one Mac backup won't conflict with the other computer backup.
To restore a backup, use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps to restore the backup onto the computer -
Time Machine backup on a new Mypassport not working
Can anyone help? I am using a Mac My Pass Port 1T to try to back up my Mac Book Pro in order to use Boot Camp to put Windows on my machine. (diretions say back up first).
The only thing I've done on this passport is dump pictures and videos onto it last summer/fall and there's tons of space on it. Problem is, I forget how to do all this stuff! I plugged it in and Time Machine opened and began backing up. Then, my whole computer froze and I had to push and hold the power button to reboot it.
Can someone walk me through this process?
Thank you!!!!

My MacBook Pro's display died and I'm having the machine replaced by Apple under warranty. I backed up the information using Time Machine before I sent it to Apple for repair. Question is whether restoring the information on my new replacement MacBook (soon as I get it) will be as simple as plugging in to the external drive, where all my backups are, as soon as I power it on for the first time
Almost. See #19, especially the green box, in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
By the way, you've posted in the +Time Capsule+ forum -- a Time Capsule is apple hardware combining a wireless router and hard drive. It's one of the possible destinations for Time Machine backups.
If you have more questions, or problems with that, feel free to post back here.
But if you have other problems with Time Machine, not involving a Time Capsule, please post in the +Snow Leopard > Time Machine+ forum at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1342 -
Resume Time Machine Backup On New MBP (props available)
Hello Officials,
I do not mean to scare away answers, but I am an experienced Mac boy, and would be forever honored with help on (this now) complicated issue below:
Info:
My old MBP had a couple of logic board replacements, now I have the new MBP. I want to perform a clean install, and thus don't want to restore from my full time machine backup (3.3TB of data). I did use Migration-sh't-Assitant for my apps, (and proper delete process for ones I didn't want) but want further options. My main problem is that I would like to go back to having my old version of Mail (with mailbox's and rss) and my old +Address Book+. (I am aware of the longer steps to get these two to work) _As well as_, I want to resume my Time Machine backups from my old backups.
Goal:
Continue using my old Time Machine backups for my new computer. Without 'Browse Other..'.
*You Should Know -That I Know*
I can hold option for a different Time Machine, it is a terrible way to operate the machine and its files.
It is a challenge due to the MAC address.
I can just re-sync Mail with all my other accounts, but I have a lot. I don't want to do that.
Address Book, even on my 'Browse other time machine disks' this is quite funky. Open to suggestions.
I already moved the backup onto a new drive. This is different.

I have been looking into this for hours, I'm interested in what there is.

I sincerely thank you for your time, you are truly kind-

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
But there are no "officials" here; this is a user-to-user forum. We're all users, just like you.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean the old versions of the Mail and Address book apps, or the old data? What version of OSX is on each Mac?

That's outdated (2008), and not needed on Snow Leopard. When the first backup of your new Mac starts, you should get an option to "re-use" the backups. See #B5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). But note that however you answer that, Time Machine will do a new, full backup of the new Mac.
