Continuous System Lockup

Ok, this is a problem I've had with multiple distros on multiple hardware, I can enjoy a solid stable distro without this happening. Archlinux would be Perfect if it weren't for this dam bug. Its happened for ages and I have no idea howto debug it.
System atm is:
Arch x64
Lenovo Thinkpad t510
KDE 4.45
Nouveau driver.
etc
Problem is, system runs fine, everything up to date. Then randomly after the system has been going for sometime it will lockup, everything freezes, video freezes and any playing audio usually stops but the mouse still works; as in it moves freely but obviously no clicks respond.
I enabled Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, even that doesn't respond. All I can do is a cold shutdown. And again. I had hoped it was a KDE or Nouveau or Gnome error, depending on which config I had running but no. Same thing with gnome, kde and Nouveau or Nvidia running or even mesa.
Help?

Logs are in /var/log - post /var/log/everything.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
Edit: According to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510 your notebook has two graphic cards so it may be a problem with Nvidia Optimus. Try selecting Nvidia / disabling Intel card in the BIOS.

  • 10.7.4 update causes system lockup

Hello, I have Mac Pro (2006) with ATI Radeon 5770 (Apple Genuine) and 10.7.4 update causes system lockup.
I installed 10.7.4 update via software update and the update works fine.
But, after a couple of minutes, there are artfacts on display and the system locks up except for a mouse cursor or the display goes blank.
Obiously, ATI 5770 is overheating but on Windows 7, I run FurMark for an hour to see if 5770 is broken or not and no problem found.
So I reinstalled 10.7.4 (combo), reset PRAM & SMC. I found out about SMC error https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3940135?tstart=0 and replaceed AppleSMC.kext from 10.7.3 by using KextHelper but no luck.
I did clean install of 10.7.4 and everything seemed okay but the system locked up during the Setup Assistant.
I restroed the entire system (10.7.3) from Time Machine and am out of ideas. Does anybody have a simular problem?
btw, MP is upgraded to 2 quad core x5355 and to the firmware MP2.1 (2007)

    Update.
I ran Quartz Debug and disabled Quartz Extreme to see what'll happen.
No more system lock-up nor artifacts!
I reported to Apple and hope they're gonna fiz it soon.

  • State space of continuous systems with discrete mesurements

    Hello everyone,
I want to implement some estimation techniques for continuous systems using discrete measurement but I'm having some trouble finding a communion between the two concepts in labview. Basically what I want to do is to solve the ODE for the system continuously, while just getting measurements every some time step (bigger that the ODE solver), then using both quantities for state estimation. Any advice on this?
    Thank you,
    Juan E Tapiero

    Hi!
Have you tried taking a look at the ODE solver.vi in LabVIEW? You can find more information on this VI here:

  • Total System lockup during live show production (twice)

This may be too specific but here goes. I do my podcast live every Sunday night on Ustream, and every week it runs fine. Last Sunday and this Sunday I had a complete system lock up in the middle of the show. I thought it might be temperature, but I watched it carefully this week and had two cooling mechanisms so I don't think it was that.
I run Camtwist to pipe my desktop and picture in picture from my iSight on my Cinema Display. I run Audio Hijack Pro to pipe the audio to Soundflower from my Heil mic (via a USB interface) and from GarageBand where I'm recording. Feeder is what I'm reading my shownotes from and I've got Safari running to push everything to Ustream. Finally I've got Colloquy running to participate in the live chat. I know, a lot of balls in the air for me AND my Macbook Pro, right?
MBP is running Snow Leopard and is a 2.53GHz core 2 duo with 4GB of RAM, plenty of hard disk available.
After the lockup I rebooted and pulled the console logs right away. So what should I be looking for? I can see right where it died last week (6 minute gap in the logs) and the end of the logs for this week. I don't see anything that says "your system crashed because..."
The audience has been tolerant of my disappearing act but it's gonna get old soon!

Have to point out that you should work hard to be sure all 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are fully Snow Leopard compatible...and yes, that's quite a load for a laptop.
Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
As well, have you done due diligence on the basics.... confirm sufficient free space on the HD; validate disk health via DiskFirst Aid, never install SL from downloaded torrents/betas, etc. Let Spotlight finish indexing; clear out old cache files and outdated/broken/duplicate fonts; find and delete related plists.
And again, be aware that laptops are typically resource constrained - streaming as an example can tax the hardware and software. If you have large demands you might want to consider a desktop system.
Also, the general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
If issues continue, you may consider walking that portable in to the nearest Apple store and asking for opinions from the staff.
    Good luck in any case.

  • System Lockup AFTER installing ExpressCard Update 1.0!!?

hey there, before i installed the expresscard update 1.0, my mbp was running fine. just after that though i'll get random systemwide lockups.
i've noticed this happens only when i'm loading a page from Safari.
Only 3 applications are running. AdiumX, Safari and iTunes.
When I get the "lockup", my cursor will turn into a Spinning Beachball, and i'm unable to access "Force Quit" menu, as well as click on anything else on the screen. music keeps on playing on iTunes though.
further examination of my console.log ges me this

So the 50million dollar question is: How can I rollback the **** expresscard update?
does anyone have any similar problems?

    UPDATE:
i have discovered that a fresh boot, followed by launching ONLY Safari, I would get a lockup WITHOUT FAIL when i'm loading this webpage

  • System lockups/video corruption after adding hard drive

I have a first generation MacPro with an ATI video board. I recently added a 1 TB Western Digital "Black" hard drive, and I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the first drive onto the Black HD, which is now my new boot drive.
Ever since I did that, my system has become quite unstable and locks up frequently. What typically happens is I'll get a garbled single row of pixels in random places on the screen, and then within a few minutes it will lock up if I try to do anything that is graphics intensive such as using Expose's active screen corders to show my desktop, or opening a folder with dozens of different icons (like the Apps folder). It /seems/ like the problem is compounded when I am using FireFox, but that may simply be because I use it alot.
After the lockup the only way to regain control of the machine is to hold in the power button.
I've even gone as far as removing the original drive thinking that perhaps the system might be confused and is pulling drivers or whatever from the old drive. That didn't help.
Any thoughts as to what is happening here? It's seriously driving me nuts (not to mention wasting a lot of my time constantly having to restart the system).

Did you run Disk Warrior before and after cloning?
    Repaired permissions?
    Re-ran 10.5.7 combo update?
I'd even look in system profile - memory and see if there are errors showing (doesn't show errors from prior system boots though).
Cleaned out the X1900; add copper cooling kit $29, or look into another ATI card.
Before using any new drive, zero it. And if you have Windows and the drive is backed up or before you put files on it --- do a complete and thorough zero and extended test in Windows using WD's own Diagnostic utility - much better, reliable, and does map out bad blocks while Disk Utility and other OS X tools rarely do. But any new drive... I've had 3 out of 6 need such treatment.
As a test, reboot back on your original why not? I'd have done that just to narrow down the possibilities.

  • Random system lockups, possibly video related

Just using the notebook as normal, and then voila, the beachball of death. All keyboard functions are useless, but I can still move the mouse around -- other than that NOTHING works. After a hard shutdown, and startup, Console yields the following leading up to the time gap from the lockup:

4/15/08 2:07:42 PM kernel NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel timeout!
Anyone else seeing these? Last time it happened it Excel was trying to open a spreadsheet.

I'm getting these hard hangs as well.
    Googling,
    "kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x3 = Fifo: Unknown Method Error"
…lead me here. I've had a handful of hangs, usually once every couple days. I noticed on my last MBP (2.3, 2GB RAM) I had the full system kernal panics while on a 3-person audio Skype call after windows weren't rendering properly.
Today my hang was while the system was not being actively used, right after editing some audio with Rogue Amoeba Fission. I let it go for 20mins to see if it would recover, and it did not. I used Cntl-Cmd-Power to force a restart - and that took 10-20secs to actually kick in.
I have not tried removing a cable to kick start, I'll try that.
Lastly to the guys who are spouting venom about getting a patch for this, chillout. You're just making things unpleasant for everyone. Apple wants this fixed as much as you do. (speaking as a former Appler myself)

  • How can I diagnose a total system lockup?

When I run chromium and a game (Dota 2 or CS:GO) simultaneously, my system sometimes completely freezes, and I am unable to do anything including switch to a different tty. I can usually run these at the same time, and my memory usage is about 55%. However, sometimes, the lockup occurs and the disk led goes crazy. How would I go about diagnosing this problem? Which logs should I check?  Thanks!

    Have a look at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190669 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190247.
You could run "dstat -cdnmgs --top-io --top-bio --top-cpu --top-mem" and try to catch its output before the freeze.

  • Unusual disk read write and system lockup - Gen 1 MacPro dual Intel

I have had this issue for a while - but I think it is getting worse (or I'm just more tired of it). The disks start reading/writing ( I can see it in Activity Monitor) and continue for several minutes. Meanwhile, the system is fully occupied and cant be used.
In the Activity Monitor window, I notice that ICalExternalSync is using up nearly a gig or memory and 2 gigs virtual memory - is this normal?
Also, the kernal_task item is using up 58 threads, another gig of virtual memory but just 80mb of real memory. Just seems odd.
    Any suggestions?

I answered my own question - it stopped when I quit IcalExternal sync using the Activity Monitor - so now the answer is why is this service flooding my system with disk read/writes?

  • One of four ipods causes system lockup/freeze

Off and on when my son connects his ipod to charge or load new songs, sometimes it freezes the entire system - iTunes and everything. i cannot move the mouse and keystrokes dont do anything either. I am forced to hold the power button to power down and startup again. His ipod is set to manual and only sync two items (one playlist and calendar) and it is NOT selected to use as a drive. I tried to restore the settings and start over; the problem still reoccurs.
Any ideas? This is more than iTunes lockup - I lose control of the whole system.

If turning up the fan speed seems to help you out then I'd be surprised if your issue wasn't heat-related. Then again, I wasn't able to diagnose my problem either so what do I know?
I know that heat isn't the issue for mine, though. The times that it froze were when the computer was all different temperatures. Also, when running intensive applications it didn't necessarily freeze.
Aaaaaaaaaanyhow, taking it in to the Apple Store today was certainly an experience. I know how they make all of their money now! It really makes me think that if they're able to diagnose the issue then I'm just going to fix it myself. Even though the RAM tested fine for me, the tech seemed to think that it was still a RAM issue. He wanted to keep the computer there so they could run some tests on it. They were going to quote me ~$190 to diagnose it and replace a single stick of RAM if that was the issue.
I mean.. seriously? $190? I can buy 2GB of RAM online that would work with the MBP for about $30. I know how to replace it myself. I told him I was going to replace it and see if that fixed the issue. He said it might be something else and offered a MUCH less costly diagnostic just to keep me from walking out of the store.
Anyhow, he also said that if it wasn't the RAM then more then likely the logic board would need to be replaced. It would cost ~$350 for them to ship it out for a diagnostic and then another ~$1200 for a logic board. Forget that. For ~$1550 I can buy a refurb MacBook Pro at the online Apple Store. It would be newer, faster and have a warranty. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that if it's not the RAM then I'll need to either find a logic board and replace it myself (I've found them on eBay for ~$500) or just get rid of it and get a new laptop. The new ThinkPads are looking pretty nice actually. We'll see. I'll update this thread once I get the final diagnosis.

  • Complete system lockup

    Hi all,
Having an intermittent issue with my Laptop (It's a dell D630)
I've had Arch running on it for about a week now and just today i've been getting random system crashed. The mouse/keyboard will completely freeze and if audio is playing it will just loop the last second of audio. Im unable to exit to TTY to try and get the system up and running again.
I've looked through dmesg and Xorg log and cannot see anything that would indicate a problem. Here are the logs anyway:

    My pleasure.
Im not 100% sure but i believe the caps lock/num lock etc lights just freeze on what ever state they are in right before the crash. I will double check this for you when it happens again.
Great, but you may want to enable the magic Sysrq key stuff I had linked prior to your next freeze.  That way you can use the tool after the freeze.
Can you see anything in my logs that looks out of place?
    Nothing jumps out at me.
You might set your machine up to allow you to log in via ssh.  Then, after the crash, see if you can log in via ssh.  If you cannot, then see if you can ping the box.  Response to the ping is handled at a very low level, log in via ssh is a fairly high level.  I am trying to determine if the system is unconscious,  in a coma, brain dead, or muerte. (Pardon my anthropomorphisms)

  • Constant short system lockups, no mouse movement, spontaneous res changes

I have an original 2006 Macbook Pro 2.0GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM with an upgraded Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hybrid hard drive and an upgraded Apple 802.11n Airport Extreme wireless adapter.
Beginning in August 2010, the system began to exhibit odd trackpad behaviour. The system acted as if the trackpad wasn't recognizing finger input every 20 - 30 seconds. This would happen 3 or 4 times a day. The problem got progressively worse, and in October another problem started - the display. 5 - 10 times per day the system will flash to a pastel blue screen, then drops back to the regular display at 640X480 screen resolution. Accessing Displays in System Preferences and picking "detect" returns the system to its proper settings.
The trackpad freezes are actually short system freezes, as they happen even when using an external mouse. I thought that this might be a software problem, so I did a complete re-install to a new hard drive (the Seagate) and the problems remain - pointing to a hardware problem.
I have reset the SMC, NVRAM and PRAM.
There have been other issues with the machine over the years. I have replaced 2 GPU fans myself, and had the system fan replaced under the original 1-year applecare warranty. The original hard drive failed, and was replaced in 2008 with a Western Digital Scorpio 320GB. When this was filled, I replaced it in spring 2010 with a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB. Thinking that the 640 might be too slow for a system drive, I replaced it with the Seagate Momentus XT 500 Hybrid. The seagate has been a huge boost to system performance - when the system works...
Any thoughts? I'm an IT professional with 30+ years of experience fixing a wide variety of hardware. I have been a certified repair technician for HP, Toshiba and Dell laptops, and this is one of the few problems that has me completely stumped, and it is my own system!!!
Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

I've actually found the answer, and it wasn't what I expected at all.  The problem is a defective thermal sensor on the CPU.  The CPU Fan NEVER spins up beyond about 1000RPM, so the temperature of the system rapidly spikes, resulting in throttling.  I can watch the temperature spikes on surrounding thermal sensors, while the CPU temperature remains flat.
I solved the issue by manually setting a default cpu fan speed of 3200rpm, and setting a toggle to force it to 6000rpm for heavy workloads.  While this is hard on the fan, it has resulted in proper operation of the computer.
I also set the jumper on the HD to force SATA1 (SATA150) mode, just to be safe.
All is now functional since these two changes.

  • Random System Lockups

    Hello everyone,
A week ago, I ungraded my system RAM to 1.0 GB (2x512 MB modules) DDR400. Since then, the PC has been running non-stop (just an occasional restart sometimes). For around 4 days, everything was normal. Then, the PC got stuck once (mouse pointer stopped working, hard disk LED went off, NUM lock / CAPS lock didn't work). But now, it's become much more regular with the system getting stuck in a similar manner at least 10 times a day. There's no particular place it gets stuck at. Sometimes while playing a game and sometimes while browsing web. It even gets stuck at the disk check, that Windows does after it encounters a bad shutdown. I've gone crazy trying to figure out what's going wrong. I know, it's not software. I've also got Windows 2000 installed and that too hangs similarly. I've tried changing various options from BIOS setup (including restoring defaults) but nothing helps. Here's my system's configuration:
    Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz (533 version)
    MSI Mainboard - 875P NEO FIS2R (BIOS 1.7)
    1,024 MB DDR400 RAM (2 modules of 512 MB)
    ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
80.0 GB Seagate Barracuda UATA HDD
40.0 GB Western Digital UATA HDD
40.0 GB Seagate Barracuda UATA HDD (on Promise RAID)
    Creative SoundBlaster Live 5.1
    Cambridge SoundWorks 5.1 Surround
    Liteon DVD / LG CD-Writer
Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1A)
    DirectX 9.0b
    ATI Drivers 3.10 Catalyst
DDR voltage is set to 2.5 V and the system is running in "Low" performance mode.
Setting it to "Fast" or "Ultra" results in display corruption / frozen system. ANy kind of help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kamran

Kamran, I have exactly the same problem...my computer was rock solid stable for a year.  I purchased Unreal Tourney 2004 and my video card started to crash... updated the drivers now the game runs great but my computer now randomly hangs.   oh yeah, my systems screen goes blank when it hangs...   I really need to find out what the problem is because it happens any time.  It will be up for a days and when I get home from work it will be blank and hung.  It happens when I'm typing an email it happens anytime.   I haven't found a pattern yet and it has been about a month since this has been going on.
    Sequence of events
    1) installed UT2k4
    2) ATI would crash during game play (ati vpu recovery would kick in)
    3) Updated ATI drivers
    4) still ATI crashing during game play.
    5) found out the poles were switch on the outlet my UPS was plugged into (which should be a problem since it's AC)
    6) Switched poles back
    7) purchase a new powersupply just incase (replacing antec 300w)
    8) system will no longer post
    9) replaced the motherboard with the same
    10) system still not posting
    11) tracked it to memory (btw the diagnostic LEDs are not labled correctly telling me it was the keyboard controler that was failing that's why I replace the motherboard)
    12) returned the motherboard
    11) So somehow one of my dimms was damaged?  My system would no longer post with both dimms but that "defective" dimm would work on a asus board I have.
    12) replaced the dimm on warranty not remembering that they need to be replaces in pairs.  So one was version 1.2 and the new one 3.1.
    13) system now hanging randomly
    15) yesterday it hung and wouldn't post
    16) pulled the ATI and replaced with GeForce
    17) system posted and ran
    18) 2 hours later it hung again
    19) 3 days ago I replace the other dimm on warranty (I remembered about the DDR) both dimms have version 3.1 on them but the serial numbers are out of order (could there be a possiblily of incompatiblity between two sticks of the same version)
    20) system still hanging just less often
    21) upped the Mem voltage to 2.65
    22) disabled ATI VPU recovery
    23) no crashes yet but it has only been an hour.
    Here is my configuration
    Intel Pentium 4 - 3 GHz (800 fsb)
    MSI Mainboard - 875P NEO FIS2R (BIOS 2.0)

  • MSI GTS250 Twin Frozr 1GB OC Checkerboard System Lockup...

Found this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=136466.0 when I started having the same problem after updating to MSI's Graphics Driver 191.07.  I only got the BSOD once.  Then the checkerboard display every other time which also locked up the system.
I have researched and experimented with this for 8 days now and this is what worked for me.  I downloaded the nVidia driver 197.45 from nVidia and 'Driver Sweeper' and removed graphics driver as suggested by Mike.  Win 7 reinstalls the drivers when booting up normally (and didn't have a 'cancel' button), so I unplugged from the internet, disabled UAC and System Restore, and went thru the steps again.  Booted up normally, intalled the 197.45 driver, and for 4 days now, haven't had any problems.  I've recorded a few shows thru my Hauppage 2250 using WinTV and MCE, edited some graphics using GIMP, and I play Mass Effect 1 & 2, (all running at the same time) and haven't had so much as a hiccup.  Also, when I got the GTS 250, I did NOT install all the bells & whistles that come on the CD (don't have Afterburner or anything else like that, or any other utilities).  My motherboard is OC'd using the OC Switch on the board and haven't had any inherent problems come thru to the video card.
Don't know if this will work for anyone else, but it did work for me.  Thanks for the Driver Sweeper info Mike, I've used it to uninstall some other unused drivers also.
EDIT:  and BTW, Resolution stays at 60Hz now too.

-Hey, Saddletramp, at least we are trying!   That sounded plausible to me as a possibility also, so i'm glad you checked it out.
-How infrequent have your 'checkerboard/lock-ups' been, and are they like mine, never when the graphics are particularly intensive?  Mine has yet to have a problem in a game or using a benchmarking tool, only when there is just about no load on it . . . i almost wish it were more frequent, as it not happening for over a week at times makes it more difficult to troubleshoot.
Same here...the more it's loaded down, the less likely it is to occur.  I've always hated 'overly' intermittent problems.  But what can ya do...
Quote from: SuprX on 12-May-10, 20:34:47
Also, should mention i am using the latest MS approved nVidia driver, 197.45.
    Sup'r X
I've been through every driver set version MSI and nVidia has for this card.  And I've also flashed the BIOS back down to 1.1 (back up to 1.2 now).  They all end up the same (checkerboard freeze).  Right now I'm using th 197.45 driver too.  The same driver sets run fine with the GT220 card I have. As does the onboard (whateveryawannacallit) video.  Biggest problem with the onboard video is that with an adapter name like '980a/780a' video, it's useless for anything that looks for a 'known' video adapter (such as games).  It's got to be something on the card, whatever it is.

  • Samba Shares and System Lockup

    Hey Guys,
So I've been having this issue since I got my MacBook Pro, when I'm using it at work I'm connected to various Samba Shares on Windows Server 2003, a Drobo, and a Windows Vista machine. Now, if I dismount all of them when I'm heading out of the office then my system is fine, but if I forget to dismount one of them the entire system locks up upon waking the Mac up. I cannot do anything and I am forced to power down and power back up.
This is endlessly annoying, as I'm sure you can imagine and I lost a large Photoshop document last night as a result.
    Any ideas guys?
    Thanks
    Chris Pressland

I purchased our first mac in December 2010. The macbook pro utilizes SMB file shares on one of my windows 7 PC's. I am experiencing the EXACT SAME problem as everyone in this thread. It crashes at least once a week. It's not just Finder but the entire OS freezes including the Dock. It allows you to browse throw the apple menu and select "Restart" but it only hangs endlessly after that. I'm a PC/Microsoft expert and as a new mac user my experience has been extremely disappointing.
Apple: There is an abundant amount of threads on the web regarding this very same issue. It's not just inconvenient. It's extremely disruptive and frustrating. I am almost on the verge of returning the macbook since apple hasn't cared to even address this issue.
