Contrast ratio of MBP 17" widescreen antiglare mid 2010
Hi there, I'm about to calibrate my new MBP 17" ([email protected]) widescreen antiglare mid 2010 with LaCie Blue Eye Pro. Now I'm looking for the contrast ratio of this screen. I couldn't find it in the tech docs. Anyone?
They are not in the tech docs, I believe, since the supplier may change from quarter to quarter or production run to production run. If you go into System Preferences -> Displays -> Color -> Color LCD -> Open Profile and look for a Model number. You can use that to google for hits of manufacturer make and model, and hopefully link out to specs that way.
Other than that, there are published measurements in some reviews for past models (Tom's Hardware did one about a year or tow ago - they had to compute contrast based on measured peak brightness and black level). Every review I have ever seen has reported contrast ratio's as computed from the review's own measurements, not from product specs.

MBP 13in Optical Drive mid 2010
My mid-2010 13in MBP's optical drive crapped out on me. Where can I buy a replacement?
Thanks!I'm not sure that you can. OWC offers replacement drives for pre-Unibody MBPs, but nothing later. This leads me to believe that what they offer is not compatible with newer ones. I have not seen any other vendor offer drives for Unibody MBPs either. I have a feeling that the Apple store or an AASP is your only realistic alternative. You might find a second hand one on eBay, but that would be a high risk situation in my view.
Ciao. -

Upgrade WXGA+ Mid-2010 15" 2.4GHz i5 MBP to WSXGA+ Antiglare possible?
Hello fine folks,
My girlfriend recently had an accident with her Mid-2010 MacBook Pro, and the LCD panel needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately, it was purchased in haste and as such, it's a base-configuration 15" machine with the glossy 1440x900 screen, and lowly 2.4GHz i5. Further, AppleCare was not purchased for the machine and the original warranty is a thing of the past. In any case, it has been upgraded with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, making it a perfectly serviceable machine, if not an absolute screamer.
Given that we now need to replace the LCD, I'm wondering if it might be possible to kill two birds with one stone and upgrade to a high-resolution 1680x1050 LCD at the same time, preferably Antiglare.
I imagine I would need to acquire a whole new clamshell from an Antiglare model. Assuming I could come across such an item, would it be as simple as removing the old clamshell with the broken LCD and installing the new clamshell? Would there be any incompatibilities between the existing logic board/display subsystem and the high-res LCD panel?
I am perfectly comfortable doing such surgery myself.
Many thanks for any input/experience!
Bests,
--JeffCertainly not... but I'd rather source a complete antiglare clamshell lid and slap it on myself thus upgrading the machine, as long as I know I wouldn't have to replace the logic board as well... I've done plenty of surgery on notebooks, from removing a stuck business-card shaped CD from a 12" PowerBook G4 (requiring *complete* disassembly of the machine) to swapping ThinkPad T61 motherboards into T60 chassis creating a 15" 4:3 IPS FrankenPad which can take 8GB of ram... so I can handle swapping a display.
Local apple store hasn't told me clearly whether or not it's possible, just that they will only replace it with the original screen...
I can only find one logic board part # for a 2.4GHz mid-2010 15" MBP, which suggests to me that upgrading the screen should be no problem, but I'd love to hear from someone who's done it or can give a definitive answer as to whether or not it's possible... -
MBP mid 2010 - 15" 2,4Ghz (Battery Problem)
Hi guys.
I have a MBP mid 2010. My battery wont last more that 4.30 hours.
I have tried more than enough times to test' it.
Last Night with fully charged battery I was able to get 4.40 Hours.
Bluetooth OFF
Low monitor brightness
Low keyboard illumination
Air Port was on.
Basically web browsing and 4 or 5 youtube videos.
Did not make any software instalation or updates.
4.30 hours its just to low.
BTW it as 37 full charges
My work laptop wich is a Dell Latitude E6400 with a 9cell battery I get more than 5 hours. And it as way more full charge cycles.Certainly not... but I'd rather source a complete antiglare clamshell lid and slap it on myself thus upgrading the machine, as long as I know I wouldn't have to replace the logic board as well... Mid-2010 MBP super slow with 10.9.4 & lots of backups on disk
After four years of recovering beautifully from spills and falls, I think my overly ambitious software updates may have done in my mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Aside from the usual Internet and word processing, I use my MBP for video editing.
About two months ago, I finally upgraded from Snow Leopard (10.6) to Mavericks (10.9.3) because I wanted to switch from FinalCut Pro X (and my torrented FCP7) to Adobe Premiere CC. I immediately downloaded several Creative Cloud applications and noticed a bit of slowdown, especially when using Premiere. Figuring the Creative Cloud video apps were too much for my old MBP, I deleted everything except Photoshop and Muse, and I purchased a desktop PC for video editing on Premiere (waiting for it to arrive).
I deleted several Creative Cloud applications and about 100 GB of video files (transferred from my Mac HD to an external HD). Immediately after, I saw an available software update and clicked it, upgrading me to the new Mavericks 10.9.4. Right after that, the Creative Cloud desktop app stopped working, so I reinstalled it.
After that, my MBP slowed down considerably. It takes 10-20 minutes to open any application, including Activity Monitor and Disk Utility.
I backed up using Time Machine (took about 8 hours), and I repaired the disk using Disk Utility. Repairing the disk hasn't sped anything up.
I know my hard drive is way too full, but I can't figure out why so much of it is going to backups. Since my hard drive is more than 80% full, shouldn't Time Machine automatically delete local images to bring it back to 80% at the very least? I'm using my external hard drive for Time Machine backups, so I don't know why so many are on Mac HD.
I can think of so many things that could be wrong - I only have 4GB RAM, my hard drive is almost full, and I probably shouldn't have installed Mavericks on such an old system in the first place - I'm not quite sure how to start fixing this problem. I'd like to be able to continue using my laptop for web browsing, MS Office Suite, FCPX, and FCP7. I'd be fine with reinstalling Snow Leopard (I still have the DVD), as long as the files on my hard drive are still accessible.
I'm planning to go to a repair specialist on Monday, but if anyone has advice on fixes I can do in the meantime or things I can do to make his life easier, I'd really appreciate it!

I have the same model MacBook Pro as you, and I’m running OS X 10.9.4 on mine without problems. I’d highly recommend that you upgrade your RAM; our model can work with 16 GB of RAM when Mac OS X 10.7.5 or newer is installed. I’ve got 8 GB in mine, but I’m not doing any video editing; you’d probably find 16 GB to be best. If your video editing is disk-bound, then you’d also benefit by replacing your internal HDD with a SSD. -
MBP, 15", mid-2010, Yosemite, is sluggish!
Hello,
I have read the post below this one "MacBook suddenly started running slow" posted by "stephjonas", and have completed the first step given by Linc as follows.... (also, I checked my battery cycle count which is 262 out of a maximum of 1,000)
"First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that."
I completed this step and the anonymized results are as follows:

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NEXT? Thank you all in advance..."Hacked" is not my terminology, and I don't believe it's intended to be derogatory. What you describe is a perfectly legitimate reason to alter Hosts.
If your Mac still isn't working as expected after uninstalling Intego and Trend Micro, read on. The necessity to have a reliable backup cannot be overstated, since what you describe may be an indication of impending disk failure.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered. -
I've seen some mention of this problem here, there, and everywhere, but no solutions. The skinny:
Mid-2010 MBP with a recent logic board replacement (dead GPU).
Desktop icons disappearing, reappearing every three minutes or so.
Popup saying that last time I opened Finder, it crashed, do I want to reopen it.
Some choice lines from Console. I do have Google Drive running and logged in.

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, PCIe, 256 MBYou have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Mid-2010 MBP beachballing, so slow, pretty clean - any advice?
Hello! So, I have a similar to what other people have reported about slow system performance. EtreCheck below for my MBP, so I created a new thread.
I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. History: Was okay but not blazingly fast out of the box. Used it for a while, seemed to slow down over time. Upgraded to Mavericks when it came out - didn't help and eventually got even slower. Wiped the drive clean, reinstalled the OS and put my applications back on, seemed to be okay, but got slower pretty quickly to the point that it was so frustrating that I didn't want to use it. Now I just upgraded to Yosemite and it's worse - can't stand to use the MBP anymore. Beachballs or delays on menu clicks or switching between apps; slow boot up & shut down; frozen browsers; couldn't even Force Kill chrome yesterday. Also, battery only lasts like 2.5-3 hours...I watch it tick down just sitting here on Chrome not doing anything. (It's been that way almost from the beginning, from what I recall.)
Have and use essentially only Chrome, Safari, and MS Mac Office 2008 (Excel & Powerpoint). Couldn't use Parallels due to slowness, so gave up a while ago before Mavericks!! Genius at the Apple Bar ran diagnostic checks, says everything is fine with hardware, battery and disk. I can't figure out how a pretty clean system can be so slow. Makes me want to revert to PC! I ran a EtreCheck, here it is. If anyone has any thoughts, I'm interested to hear. THANK YOU!

15" MBP Mid-2010 (6,2) SMC 1.7 Broke my MBP
Hi All,
My beloved 15" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is not well and is sitting on life support and is only barely amongst the living. On the 23rd Feb 2013 I noticed the SMC 1.7 firmware update in my AppStore App (this firmware was released on the 13th of Feb if I can recall correctly) and unfortunately I clicked install.
The update started to install and then stated that my Battery should be charged (it was 100%) and power plugged in (it was) and requested a reboot to which I clicked yes. Started rebooting and installing the firmware and rebooted once or twice automatically and then after the final reboot, screen black and no Apple Power boot sound. I left it for 5mins and then thought ok, maybe its powered down. Pressed the Bower button and all I could hear was the CD-Rom powering and no display and no sound. I tried the PRAM reset, SMC reset but nothing. The following day I took it to our only Apple Center (Live in Windhoek,Namibia) in the Country. The next day they phoned and said that my Logic Board is faulty. I told them that my MBP was perfect until the stupid SMC update. They told me that I can leave a kidney and a peace of my liver as for the repair costs will be something like US$900 or I could buy a second hand Logic Board for something like US$500.
This is a no go for me as for all was fine up until the SMC update came through. As for I had nothing to loose now anymore, I opened the MBP and removed the Battery and with the power cord disconnected and holding the Power Button for a couple of seconds and while holding the Power Button, connecting the power cord and after a few seconds releasing the Power Button again, my MBP started up. Problem now is that my Fans run 100% and the keyboard backlight is dead and the battery does not charge nor is seen by the MBP. I can now switch it off an back on and my MBP will power up and boot into OSX. If I do a SMC reset (holding shift control option while pressing power button), I am back where I started - MBP not power on, but battery charges again etc. Doing the whole battery removal again with power button pressing and only then connecting the power cord, it starts again.
After booting into OSX, I had a look at my system profiler and now see that the SMC version is 1.70f6 and as per this page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237 , my version should have flash 1.58f17 - Seems like there was a bug in Apple's SMC 1.7 Firmware code it it thought that my 15"MBP was a 17"MBP and now my SMC does not talk propperly with my hardware it seeems. I maild the Apple Guys here in Windhoek about my findings and asked them to get in contact with the Apple Geniouses overseas to find out if they could downgrade the SMC again or if they have a fix, but they don't want to help and just sayed I must have a look on www.apple.com/support and downloads and search for my SMC version and install.
That does not work as for the packages just say its not for my version - well my version is not for my MBP!
Is there maybe somebody that can help me or should I just throw my MBP away, of maybe wait 2 years in hope that another SMC version will come out that will load the propper SMC code onto my MBP? Please Guys and Girls out there - any manual way maybe of forcing a SMC firmware downgrade or reapplying the propper code of version 1.7?
Please and keeping fingers crossed.
MarkOk, it has now been three months since the last SMC 1.7 firmware update broke my mid-2010 15” MacBook Pro and having had it at two different Apple “Certified” technical centers and both told me that there is nothing that Apple can do except for replacing the Logic Board for something like US$ 500. I was not going to pay that amount for a 2010 MacBook to have its LogicBoard replaced so I unfortunately went out and bought a new MacBook Pro last month. Why unfortunately ............. BECAUSE I MANAGED TO FIX MY OLD MBP :-)
As of yesterday, I personally see a Apple “Genius” on the same level as the Petrol Attendants here in Africa that fill up your car! They know you need fuel to be able to drive your car, but that is where their knowledge or drive to figure something out stops. Ok, I am still very upset of having to fork out so much money for nothing. And yes, I do not like Apple personnel anymore, but I cannot live without my Apple machine (that is why I bought another when my old one was thought of being pushing up daisies).
I only managed to do this as for I had a brick lying around and I could not live with the idea that nothing can be done by recovering or downgrading the SMC firmware except for replacing the LogicBoard. I can also not imagine that Apple Personnel do NOT have a low level firmware recovery tool for the MBP 2010 and above models.
Ok, how did I fix it? By pure luck and by putting 1 and 1 together and getting 11 and not two :-)
If you happen to have a SMC firmware update that went bad on your machine, in my case the SMC 1.7 has three models SMC updates in one file and it loaded the wrong version onto my MacBook Pro, you can try the following:
Symptom:
MacBook Pro does not want to power up. You can only hear the CDRom making some noise and screen stays black and MBP powers off again.
Do this only if there is no other way around and when our of Warranty. Do this at your own risk.
The Fix:
Disconnect power
Open MBP and disconnect/remove the battery - close the back cover again
While power is still disconnected, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds and then while pressing and holding the power button, connect the power cable to the MBP.
If you are lucky, your MBP will now power up with the fans blazing at 100% and keyboard backlight will be off. This seems to be a recovery emergency mode or something. If you MBP did not power up, try again. If your MBP does not power up then you have a different problem and don’t need to continue the following steps.
Boot you OSX and go onto the Internet and Download the right SMC firmware version for your MBP from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Mount/Open the .dmg file and copy out the “Firmware”.pkg file.
Use Pacifist or the command line to extract the content of the .pkg file.
In my case the Apple SMC update had three models firmware in the .pkg file and the correct one for the Mid-2010 15” model was in the folder SMC18 or something. Find your correct model firmware for your MBP and copy out the following two files: SmcFlasher.efi and 2010MBP15.smc (the 2010MBP15.smc will be different for other MBP models)
Copy those two files onto the OSX disk drive to a location that you can remember like /User/username/Dowloads/smc or where ever.
Google and search for rEFIt . This is a boot loader app the will take over the boot process when you start up your MBP to enable you to go into a shell utility. Read up on how to install and how to activate the refit utility. When installed and enabled, the next time you reboot your MBP you will see the utility start up before your OSX boots.
If you see the rEFIt utility start after you rebooted the MBP, use the arrow on your keyboard and select shell and press enter. The shell.efi utility will start to boot in a “DOS” like window and after you see something where it wants to configure or setup something, just press ESC to cancel that.
After the util booted, you need to first change to your internel disk with the command “ fs1:” that is F S ONE Colon then Enter, standing for filesystem 1
Now you can change to the folder to where you copied the two firmware files like :
cd Users
cd username
cd Downloads
cd smc
There are different ways of going to the folder or find the place where you put the files.
After finding the folder with the two files you can start the update process.
First need to get the SMC into the right state
SmcFlasher.efi -reset 1
Your MBP fans should now quiet down.
Lets Flash :-)
SmcFlasher.efi -force -LoadApp 2010MBP15.smc -norestart
Your SMC should now be flashing with the right version. Once done, power down the MBP. Power the MBP back on and do a SMC reset and all should be fine now. You can now connect the battery again and start using your MBP.
Hope this helps somebody. No Warranty and this is done AT OWN RISK! -
Samsung 840 pro 512 GB SSD for Mid 2010, 15-inch MBP 2.66 GHZ with 8GBRAM
Hi All,
My MBP configuration is as follows:
I presently have CRUCIAL M4 256MB SSD. It is there for past 2 years no issues. Now I need more room as am planning to create windows partition with VS2012 with TFS. I am planning of Samsung 840 pro 512gb. My questions are as follows:
A) Does this work on Mid 2010, 15inch 2.66GHz with 8GB Ram (above configuration) MBP?
B) Will it be faster than my CRUCIAL M4 256GB.?
How much it will cost.? who is the reliable retailer in Singapore.?
Thanks and regards
RamkiThe graphics processor of your MacBook is failing. Not so surprising for this particular model, I'm afraid.

Is this HD suitable for a mid-2010 15" MBP?
The 512GB HD which came with my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro appears to have developed some problems. The machine auto-restarts on its own more often and takes a long time to go to sleep when I close the lid. I have replaced the RAM (4GB to 8GB) about 6 months ago and this helped, but now I'm thinking the HD is more of an issue. I generally keep the disc 20-25% empty, for performance, so I'm sure it's not just swap space.
Would this drive be suitable to replace my internal drive? http://www.ebuyer.com/223759-seagate-750gb-momentus-internal-hard-drive-st975042 0as
I saw this page but I'm not in the USA so would want a UK supplied: http://bit.ly/16aTDvz
Any opinions or advice would be greatly welcomed. Though I replaced the RAM myself, I'd prefer someone else to replace the HD, though I'm not sure Apple will do this. I've booked an appointment at the local Genius bar, though due to waiting times, that's not for another 5 days.
P.S: I don't know if this would have any effect, but I'm thinking of having the battery replaced as well. I believe Apple will do that for 100GBP.Yes that HDD is compatible with your MBP. I believe that Apple will only replace a HDD that you purchase from them and that will probably be at a cost that will substantially more than if you did it your self. Installation instructions can be found on the iFixit.com web site and videos on the OWC web site as well as the User manual. It is not a difficult tack and I would urge you to do it yourself and save some money.
Battery replacement is a separate issue and that should be done by Apple.

Single 8gb module supported? (Mid 2010 Core i5 15" MBP 6,2)
I have a mid-2010 15 inch MBP which can support a maximum of 8GB ram.
This is traditionally 2x4gb, and the economics of 2x4gb vs 1x8gb make more sense. The Apple docs _do_ say that the sizes supported are 2gb and 4gb.
The problem is that it turns out that I have a bad memory slot - I get "bad ram" beeps if I use the "inner" slot. Right now I'm limited to 4gb just because of this.
I'm wondering if the memory manager will support a single 8GB module in the remaining "working" slot.
These new 8gb modules have become available for the new 2011 MBPs, which would solve my problem if they worked.
Has anyone tried this out, or have any reasons to support my €100 experiment to see if it'll work?
ThanksHave an answer to my own question. In essence, no, this doesn't work.
Tried an 8GB module rated for the newer macbooks. The mac starts and runs up to a point. Then there's a freeze. -
Mid-2010 MBP, retire it or keep on chugging?
I have a mid-2010 MBP that has never failed me in the 5 years I have been using it. It is slower than it used to be, but that's probably because I have the Hard Drive maxed out to within about 30 gigs of it's 320 gig storage. I also have not upgraded the RAM, so it is operating on 4 gb RAM. I have kept it completely up to date and malware/virus free. It is currently running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am ready to buy a new MBP, and I'm considering wiping this one, upgrading it to 8 gb RAM, and giving it to my teenage son to use for music production and editing. Here are my questions:
1) Am I tempting fate? I don't want to put money into or give him a computer that is likely to crap out and maybe have him lose his hard work. Is it just time to retire this old gal?
2) If there is a lot of life left in her, should I take her to the Apple Store and have them do some sort of "tune up," or just change out the RAM myself (I've done this on other mac laptops I've had) and erase/reinstall myself?
THANKS for your input! Michelle1. Teach your son about backups. If the computer craps out it's not a problem when he has backups. Furthermore, he's losing something he didn't pay for if the computer fails.
2. There's nothing the Apple Store can do that you can't do yourself for less money. Just erase the drive and reinstall OS X. If you want you can put in more RAM and even a larger HDD.
