Contributor of the Month

Next Tuesday, the 8th of November, Nokia Support Discussions celebrates its 6th anniversary. It’s been a great ride so far, with over 385,000 registered members helping our community grow into one of the most successful manufacturer-operated support forums in its field. In honour of the occasion, we want to thank all of you for helping us get where we are today… and we’re introducing a new practice to highlight your contributions to the community.
Beginning in this month, one member will be named “Contributor of the month” and will be featured in an article in our News and Announcements board. Could it be you? It could be anyone – whether you’ve been with us the from day 1, or you just joined us last week, we’ll be looking every month for one member who has earned the community’s recognition. We are deliberately keeping the criteria for Contributor of the month open so that the results will be as fresh and varied as possible.
So, what do you need to do? Just keep up the good work. You could be recognised for a long-term success or for a single moment of absolute genius – we aren’t going to spoil the fun by laying out lots of ground rules, so just watch this space to find out who is nominated the top Discussions contributor for November!
If this or any post answers your question, please remember to help others by pressing the 'Accept as solution' button.

I see this idea has been discontinued. May i know why?

  • Contributor of the Month - November 2011

Taking the honour of being the first Discussions member to have been selected as Contributor of the Month is Psychomania. Hailing from Lancashire in north-west England where he works as a graphic designer and lives in the Colne area with his wife, their cats Robbie and Kylie and various other cute 'n' cuddly mammals. His Nokia phones are probably some of the most heavily-used in the world, helping to provide answers in almost twenty five thousand forum posts in under five years, but for him personally the most important features which he could not live without are good, old-fashioned text messaging, calling and more recently Twitter; though he also admits a habit for mobile photography and a growing liking for Spotify.
A Nokia user for many years with an entire menagerie of Nokia phones in his back-catalogue, Psychomania is currently juggling the two stars of the show - the N9 64Gb and Lumia 800, though when asked which model has been his all-time favourite, he says: "The N82. It was a powerhouse of a phone with a truly great camera! It's also probably the phone I kept using the longest." - and he goes on to say that the one thing he'd really like to see in the future is a device like his current N9 and 800 with a real world-beating camera including Xenon flash and, if possible, optical zoom - R&D boys take note, the gauntlet has been thrown down!
As well as his obvious passion for mobile phones, Psychomania has been a big fan of video gaming since his first ever computer, which was a Commodore 16. He says that one of his key characteristics is that of an avid problem-solver who gets a real buzz from getting to the core of an issue and setting everything right, which is probably why he spends so much time helping Nokia customers on this forum! He quotes his technique as being to "step back, look things over, then dive in feet-first and see what works".
His love of technology also connects to his dream holiday, which would take him to a real techie-heaven like Japan, though there was also a comment about a tent outside the Nokia factory here in Salo - Hmmm, not sure that security would take too kindly to that! Invite him to the cinema and he loves nothing more then a healthy does of Sci-fi and horror, or anything with Samuel L. Jackson; however he's just as much at home spending an evening socialising with friends at the local pub or at home relaxing with his personal zoo. If Psychomania ruled the world for a day, he says that he'd see to it that we all get free beer and pizza!
We decided to update the concept of the BBC's "Desert Island Discs", which anyone who has ever listened to British radio at any time time in the last seventy years will recognise. We asked Psychomania to imagine that he was alone on a tropical island with just his Nokia phone and a solar-powered charger to help pass the time, and that he could have five MP3 tracks, two movies and two apps - what would they be?
    Music
"This is a tricky one, but my favourite artists are as follows, and if I have to choose my favourite tracks quickly then I'd probably go with:
    Queen - One Vision
Bon Jovi - It's My Life
    Aerosmith - I don't want to miss a thing
Kylie Minogue - Can't get you out of my head
Green Day - Wake me up when September ends"
    - Psychomania
    Movies
"My all time favourite movies are the sci-fi classics Aliens & Blade Runner, I blame them for my love of sci-fi!" - Psychomania
    Apps
"Reckon I'd choose from the Microsoft Marketplace/Zune: The apps would have to be games, nothing passes the time like a good game of Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies, both are time vacuums." - Psychomania
Who will be December's Contributor of the month? Stay tuned and keep posting - it could be YOU!

  • Super User of the Month

    Hi Everyone,
The Nokia Support Discussion’s team is very appreciative of the active participation of our members and recognizes the value being provided on a regular basis.
Last September, we started identifying some of the top contributors in the forum and sent out appreciation messages to our most active members.
Since then, the team has been monitoring the activities of users on a monthly basis to identify the contribution each individual has provided to the forum. Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran, it doesn’t matter. What matters to us is that you’re here helping other users to address their questions concerning a Nokia device or service.
If you’re asking how you can become a super user, all you have to do is engage and provide assistance to other users on a regular basis. The more kudos received and answers accepted as solutions, the faster it is for you to climb up the ladder and become a super user.
In addition, you may also be recognized for your contribution by being highlighted in our News and Announcements board and possibly be featured in a Nokia Conversations article!
Get Engaged and Become a Super User! Best of luck and enjoy!

Will it be "Super Employee of the Month"?

  • Best of the Month – June '14

June and July are World Cup months across the globe. That means a bit less online traffic and a lot more soccer — or futbol, as it is known in most countries.
Although this is the English-language HP Support Forum, June offered daily reminders of just how international this community has become. In addition to our experts and participants in the Far East, throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, we have a very strong presence in Canada as well.
As the Support Highlights that follow reveal, English-speaking community members — from Nova Scotia to Africa — are engaged with HP’s forums each day.
    Oley!
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ciara_B. Ciara was recently recognized by HP management for her contribution as “a staunch ambassador of the HP brand.” She was honored with an award that is given only to a handful of employees each quarter — out of more than 300 nominees.
Recognized as an advocate for assisting customers with specific product issues, Ciara set up the “Ink, Toner, Cartridge” board within the HP Forum that enables participants to find online solutions. Ciara_B, who has spent nearly 150,000 minutes online as an Expert, has received approximately 450 Kudos for her efforts over the years.
    Hear, hear!
    Top Contributor
Who’s numero uno? In any language, Paul_Tikkanen is once again the Top Contributor to the HP Support Forum. That makes 10 straight months Paul has received the number-one ranking among our volunteer Experts.

As we say on the West Coast, Dude!
    Special Recognition
This month’s Special Recognition goes to Huffer. His outstanding participation numbers in June placed him second among Volunteers, overall.
As you’ll discover from his mini-profile on our Meet the Experts page, our man Huffer is an attorney. Not surprisingly, he’s rather adept at examining the inner-workings of computers. Community participants who exchange notes with him will quickly discover that Huffer is quite knowledgeable about video-graphics cards. In fact, he has helped many “gamers” work through their board modifications and upgrade quandaries.
As a thought leader, Huffer subtly leverages his legal expertise when helping fellow volunteer Experts understand the ramifications of assisting people with a wide range of sensitive issues.
As they say in soccer, “Sometimes the best offense is a great defense.”

  • Best of the Month – October '14

Time passes, months go by, technologies evolve and replace their old selves… but the Forum doesn’t grow old, at least not by its sprit. It still has the same rush of customers swarming through its boards, trying to get help for their HP products and the same enthusiasm of the forum experts jumping in to help them, maybe even more than before. Take October for instance; More than 5.8 million customers visited our forum this month and created over 16 thousand new topics. The experts maintained their momentum by creating more than 19 thousand replies and solving around 2,000 topics. In the October edition of this blog, we want to specially acknowledge the efforts of three people who went an extra mile to help the community members. Top Contributor  The best of the month blog isn’t complete without Paul’s name in it and Paul doesn’t disappoint the readers this month either. He is still the reigning king of the contributors’ leaderboard. In October, Paul contributed 1246 posts in the Forum and solved 206 of them. He made a lot of fans, as 346 customers appreciated his help by giving him kudos. Here are a couple of comments from his fans. ‘Thank You’ Note 1: Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've been trying to resolve this problem for the whole day. ‘Thank You’ Note 2: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! A solution that finally worked!  Special Recognition:  The first person we want to recognize this month is ManjunathTech. He is a committed individual and terrific Expert, who recently inspired quite a few people to join the expert family. Learn more about him in this article in the Expert Portal section. Manjunath made an impressive 639 posts this month, out of which 55 were solved. He received 147 kudos as appreciation and also some wonderful thank you notes. Here are a couple of them. ‘Thank You’ Note 1: It is working and I am so happy now. Thank you very much for your assistance. ‘Thank You’ Note 2: I must say, you response was not only fast, but also EXTREMELY helpful!! Thank you so much!  The other person we want to specially recognize this month is KNRK. He is a very new member of our community, joined just a few months back and is yet to become an expert. However, what he may lack in experience, he sure makes up with his sheer energy and passion to help customers. KNRK made a huge 1058 posts in October and solved 97 of them. He received appreciation from 204 customers on return, along with some pleasant comments. Here are a couple of the comments. ‘Thank You’ Note 1: Worked, thanks so much KNRK! ‘Thank You’ Note 2: Thank you KNRK, you are a life saver. PCI Device link worked like a charm.  Support Highlights Although we just recognized 3 experts in the blog, we want to give “shout-outs” for team members who keep the community vibrant and vital. • Best of the Month – August '14

On Expert Day, do what Experts do. Set new records! That’s what the HP Support Forum did in August. With preliminary estimates exceeding 8 million total visits to our online community this month, we’re on track to surpass January’s record-setting combined web and mobile visits.
In fact, it’s acutely obvious that social media platforms like this one are thriving. Our web visits exceeded 250,000 per day on numerous occasions this month. The forum averaged more than 230,000 daily visits in August compared to 210,000 average daily web visits during the same month a year ago and approximately 200,000 average daily web visits in July 2014.
The month also featured our quarterly Expert Days, which attracted more than 330,000 combined web and mobile visits! The August 27–28 event at HP’s Palo Alto headquarters hosted nearly three dozen Experts who contributed to our record-setting month.

  • Best of the Month – July '14

It’s a common occurrence. You’re in the audience at a rock concert, jazz club or orchestral recital and the sound system doesn’t work. An anxious singer or musician taps her microphone…to no avail. Invariably, an alert technician leaps forward, jogs across the stage, fiddles with the A/V system and…Voila! The sound comes on with a high-pitched whir.
Like concert audio technicians, HP Support Forum Experts are backstage heroes. They ensure everything stays up and running for our highly valued participants, who make tens of millions of web and mobile visits to the HP forums each month.
This month, we’re recognizing a few of our top performers with a sound “check” of our own. We’d also like to bring to your attention our quarterly Expert Days, commencing August 27–28.
    Top Contributor
Our lead problem-solver in July was DavidPK, who joined the HP Support Forum in September 2010. Since then, he has amassed an impressive tally. He has read more than 51,000 messages and posted nearly 31,000 replies. He has authored upwards of 4,560 total Solutions and received almost 9,000 Kudos for helping community participants resolve their computing problems.
Those familiar with DavidPK know he’s extremely active on the Lockups & Freezes boards. He’s eager to assist people in getting their desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets back to peak performance. This recent post (in French) explains why DavidPK, who resides across The Pond, is beloved by HP Support Forum participants around the globe.
For the month of July, he received 309 Kudos and was credited with 248 Accepted Solutions.
    Special Recognition
This month’s Special Recognition goes to two notable Experts: a Volunteer and an HP Employee.
The word venerable comes to mind for old_geekster, who refers to 1984 as the date he got hooked on personal computers. A veteran volunteer on the HP Support Forum, old_geekster joined the boards six years ago. He is patient and generous with his time, as his total stats reflect. Since 2008, he has replied to nearly 9,400 posts and received more than 2,700 Kudos.
Recently, old_geekster has been revving up the forum and cooling down anxious participants. During the past six months he has read a whopping 26,842 messages and responded with 1,901 posts (as of July 30). He has spent more than 27,000 minutes online and received 272 Accepted Solutions for his qualitative efforts.
One of many veterans who joined the HP Support Forum in 2008, Miles is a well-recognized product Expert and leader in the printing group at HP. In fact, he is our “go-to-guy” for many of the toughest questions we encounter in the printing realm.
Miles works behind the scenes to ensure all forum Experts receive detailed product information and documentation support to help them answer community participants’ questions. He communicates regularly with HP Support Forum volunteers, moderators and managers and conducts weekly meetings to resolve complex printer issues. In addition to staying abreast of HP printer updates, Miles provides forum Experts with backstage product support, educating them about new technologies on the horizon. He also participates regularly in our quarterly Expert Days.

  • Issue on Changing the Payroll Area in Mid of the Month from Biweekly to Mon

    Dear Experts,
I have an issue on payroll area which is changing from biweekly to monthly in Mid of the Month.
One employee was retired on 29th of March, so his payroll area was changed from biweekly to monthly on 29th. For retire we are running the payroll on 8th of every month. When we are running payroll for April he has received only 29th and 30th retire salary, by the time he is not yet retired also.
In this case the main problem is monthly payroll time is early then biweekly. so the employee is getting retire salary then his regular pay.
Can you guide me where we can control that monthly payroll area should not be triggered at this movement.
    Thanks
    Chandra

    Hi Dilek,
If splits will be there definitely there will be two wagetypes but the amounts they'll have will be based on the rates of those periods.
Suppose an employee got payscale increase on 11th of  the month, then employee will be paid at the rate of first payscale for first ten days then @ of second payscale on second 20 days.
So there won't be any inconsistency.
    Regards,
    Tomesh

The techniques in the first link will work when moving the library between Windows and OS X as long as the library is "portable", but iTunes takes quite some time checking the database when the library is opened under a different OS.

  • HT201412 I cannot open the month of March 2013 in my iPad3 calendar. I can however see it in the year view for 2013 and I can view the daily and weekly calendars for March 2013. Any ideas what has gone wrong ? Thanks

I have a new iPad3 and have found I cannot open the month of March 2013 when I tap on it. All other months open OK ! I can see March 2013 in the yearly view and I can open the individual days, and weeks, of March 2013 but I cannot see the whole month in the monthly view. When I try to open the monthly view for March 2013 it returns me to the start screen which shows all the apps etc and closes the Calendar app. Any guidance of what is going wrong and how it can be corrected. Thanks !

Don't worry we have to start somewhere. Feel free to post your questions here, we learn from each other.

  • Is it possible to change the number of weeks to be displayed in the month view in calendar (mavericks)?

I'd like to know if it's possible to change the number of weeks to be displayed in the month view in calendar? Thanks!

    No.
There are up to six calendar weeks that might be used to display the 31 possible days in a month.
So the month view displays six weeks.

  • How to generate a Yearly report based on a calculation at the Month level

Have the need to create a report as follows. Any ideas on how this can be accomplished in OBI is appreciated. I have already tried different ways but non worked for me.
The data is stored in a table at day level as follows:
    Day Amount_A Amouont_B
    1/1/2008     100     100
    1/15/2008     200     100
    2/1/2008     100     400
    2/15/2008     300     200
    1/1/2009     100     300
    1/15/2009     100     200
    2/1/2009     200     100
    2/15/2009     400     300
The report should be displayed at Year level. Amount_A is just the summation of Amount_A from the table at daily level rolled up to the Year level in the Time dimension. The same thing for Amount_B.
The formula for Absolute_Error is Absolute(Amount_A - Amount_B). But the problem is that it has to be calculated at the Month level instead of Day Level. So following is the logic for Absolute_Error:
    Month     Amount_A Amount_B     Absolute_Error
    Jan-2008     300     200     100
    Feb-2008     400     600     200
    Jan-2009     200     500     300
    Feb-2009     600     400     200
The report should be displayed as follows:
    Year Amount_A Amount_B     Absolute_Error
    2008     700     800     300
    2009     800     900     500
Note that the calculation of Absolute_Error results in a different value if it is calculated at the Month level and summed up to Year than if it were calculated at the Day level and then summed up to Year. It is required to be based on Month level for this report.
Is there a way to do this without having to build an aggregated fact table at the Month level?

    Hi.
    Do this:
    1. Create Amount_A and Amount_B in BMM without SUM as default aggregation rule.
    2. Now, just go to Answers and make report with three columns:
    YEAR -- EXPRESSION 1 -- EXPRESSION 2
    EXPRESSION 1 is:
    sum(Amount_A) - sum(Amount_B)
    EXPRESSION 2 is:
    sum
    abs
    sum(Amount_A by MONTH)
    sum(Amount_B by MONTH)
    My example in Answers:
    TIMES.CALENDAR_YEAR
    sum(SALES.QUANTITY_SOLD_NORMAL) - sum(SALES.AMOUNT_SOLD_NORMAL)
    sum( abs(sum(SALES.QUANTITY_SOLD_NORMAL by TIMES.CALENDAR_MONTH_DESC) - sum(SALES.AMOUNT_SOLD_NORMAL by TIMES.CALENDAR_MONTH_DESC) ) )
This will first summarize amount A and amount B on a month level and then do a difference, after that ABS and then sum on the year level.
This is workaround to avoid larger RPD changes.

  • On my iPad 3, how do I make calendar items lasting more than one day appear as such on the monthly view of my calendar? Right now only the first day of the item appears.

On iPad 3, all of my calendar items lasting more than one day do not appear correctly when looking at the monthly view of the calendar; only the first day of the appointment appears. For example, if I am taking a vacation for 4 days, only the first day of the vacation is marked on the calendar, instead of being listed on all 4 days. When I look at the weekly view, however, it is correct and is listed on all 4 days. The problem here of course is that at a glance, there is no way to look at my monthly schedule. On my iPhone, everything is correct, regardless of month or week view, so clearly this is an iPad problem I guess? Please advise on how this can be corrected. Thank you!

Unfortunately you can't do what you want. Many people have complained to Apple about this. I suggest you provide Apple feedback directly at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html. They will not provide a direct response but hopefully if enough people provide feedback Apple will fix this.
