Control click to "open with"

Can anyone shed light as to where to find the file that contains the list of applications that come up when you Control Click an icon and select Open With?
When I do this I get a list with dozens of seemingly inappropriate and irrelevant apps (including .exe apps from who knows where). Can this list be edited?

Do you or did you have a Windows drive connected to your machine or are you running Windows on it?
If so that would explain spotlight finding those exe files.
If you do, be sure you have them excluded from spotlight search and then follow VK's instructions.

Can't see image after right click and "open with" Windows XP command using Editor PSE 10. The editor opens but no image appears. I have to use the open command from within Editor

Make sure you have chosen the application PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe and not a shortcut.
To manually associate a file format with an application:
In Windows Explorer, right-click a file whose file association you want to change. For example, if you want to change the file association for all jpeg files, click a jpeg file.
Choose Open With > Choose Program from the pop-up menu.
In the Open With dialog box, click Browse and then locate and select the exe application file.
Checkmark "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click OK.
Note:If you choose a program from the Open With menu in step 2, instead of selecting the Choose Program option, this check box is not available, and the file association won't work.

Select one and hit the Space bar to view it in QuickLook. Use the forward arrow keys to move from file to file.   If the file can't be viewed in the QuickLook mode then the file is damaged and probably can't be copied or moved.
You could try a photo file recovery application like  MediaRECOVER which can scan the memory card and tell you what files, if any, can be recovered before you have to purchase it.

  • Multiple versions of QT and iTunes on control click's "Option with"

When I control click on an item, the open with menu populates two choices of QT 7.2.1 and 7.3. The same is true for iTunes and Safari. When I select the older version, a new QT icon appears in the dock. Is this normal behavior? Strangely enough, when I select "other" application and a new finder window comes up, the duplicate applications are not listed. Is anyone else experiencing this?
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

The download comes as a compressed file in .dmg format. When I right click to see what opening app it is directed to it says: Open with "DiskImageMounter (default). • CS2's Tricky Right-Click (Windows Open With... Has No Illustrator Listing)

I've seen several people ask about this and have had the problem myself.  I've seen few answers and most that have asked seemed to have sought help elsewhere or given up.  Having solved it with a little hunting and digging around for info, I thought I'd share what I've learned.  I know this is a half-decade-old issue, but I had it today and I'm sure I won't be the last.  Hopefully somebody else out there can benefit.
Problem:  Upon installing the CS2 suite, Illustrator is not listed as an option for opening files in the contextual/right-click menu within Windows Explorer.  (Generally applies to PDF filetype, but should work for others if the issue comes up.)  Attempts to add Illustrator result in error messages or non-response from the Open With dialogue.
Solution:  This solution will require editing your registry.  Registry files are very critical to the inner workings of Windows and if you're not sure about what you're doing, please ask an advanced user (or admin/I.T. dept. if you're on a work computer) for assistance.
First, be certain that Illustrator and any other program that can open your PDF files are installed properly.  (Photoshop, Acrobat and Reader will do, for example.)
If PDF is already associated with another program, you can skip to the next step.  In Windows Explorer, select your PDF and right-click on it.  Select Open With... then pick any program.  (Actually, even a program that can't open PDF's should work for this process, but you may have unnecessary difficulty.)  See that the checkbox to always use the selected program is turned on.  Click OK.  You may close the program after it opens.
Now you'll need to retrieve the complete path to Illustrator.  One easy way to find this is to locate the program listing in your Start menu, desktop, wherever it is.  Right-click that icon and select Properties.  You do NOT want the path that's listed under Location on the General tab.  On the Shortcut tab, select and copy the path listed in the Target field.  You do not need to copy the quotation marks, if there are any.
Next we need the Registry Editor...please do heed the warning above before proceeding.  Click on the Start menu, then Run...  In the Run pop-up (the Start\Search box in Windows 7 also works) type regedit then click OK.
You should now have a window with what look like folder branches on the left-hand side.  These folders are called keys.  If you only see one item marked Computer, click the plus sign or arrow to expand the list.  There will be one key labaled HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.  Expand that as well.  You should get a VERY long list that begins with * and proceeds through many file extensions and other items.  Scroll down...way down, past all the items that start with periods and other special characters.  We're looking for the P section, which in my list is about 3/4 of the way to the bottom.  Expand the key labeled pdf_auto_file.  (There is a .pdf item higher in the list.  Keep going if you're there.)
    We are now at: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pdf_auto_file
Expand all of the keys inside pdf_auto_file.  There should be one named shell, holding edit and open, each of which holds a final key named command.  Inside each of the command keys should be one item that shows on the right-hand side.  That item (this is called a value) is named (Default) and you'll notice the data within holds the path to the program you selected earlier.  This is what we need to change, iniside both command keys.
Double-click the value name (Default) or icon.  A window will pop up named Edit String.  In this window, note the Value data containing the program file path.  This is usually surrounded by " and " "%1 ".  Select only the path between the quotation marks, ending in exe.  Now paste the path you copied earlier for Illustrator.  Take note that the complete string looks similar to:
    "E:\Adobe\CS2\Adobe Illustrator CS2\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe" "%1"
Click OK to close the box, then go to the other command key and repeat the replacement for its data value.  Close that box and you should be finished editing.  You may close the Registry Editor now, as well as any other windows you don't need.
In Windows 7, this was pretty much all I needed to do.  Earlier versions may or may not need rebooting Windows to update the active system.  I've now got Illustrator as my default program for PDF's and it's available in the Open With... window should I chose to change my mind a couple times.  The PDF icon even updated itself.
Should you need any details explained further, drop a reply...I think I'll get a notice, though this is my first post here.  If I don't respond very soon, feel free to e-mail my nickname @aol.com to remind me.  Good luck!

In XP Pro, not there to be 100% sure, that "open with" already has Illustrator CS3 listed and no version 10, the opposite of what Bridge shows.
I'll try it, just in case that helps update Bridge.
    Thanks

    Jim,
Since getting my Mac Pro, and keeping multiple boot drives in it, I have found the behavior with Mail to be different than with the Finder itself. This was the case in Tiger, as well as now in Leopard. The Finder will offer the best choice on the current boot drive, but if another version of the same application exists on another hard drive (whether a boot drive or not, and including external hard drives) then will offer that version, as well.
Mail on the other hand simply offers every possibility, even where the versions are the same, but unfortunately does not alert you as to the source of each (which drive, as an example). This behavior is purposeful, I believe, and not an indication of anything wrong, but inconvenient. But the 13 offerings was not normal!

  • After upgrade from 34 to 35, control click still opens new tab but new tab won't load upon selection. i have to click address and press enter or click go

I've used Firefox for many years, I really like it and have been readily recommending it to others.
However after finally upgrading to 35.0.1 from 34.x I now have a very annoying and time-consuming issue.
So much so that I'm thinking of attempting a downgrade!
I didn't really want to upgrade but Firefox kept bothering me and I inadvertently accepted. Is there a way to switch this upgrade reminder off?
Anyway, previously I would Ctrl-click a link and it would open a new tab but not jump to it. It would remain unloaded until I clicked it. Then it would load as normal.
After the upgrade, I Ctrl-click a link and it still opens a new unloaded tab. So far, so good. Now however, when I click the new unloaded tab, it just sits there and does nothing. I have to click the URL in the address bar and either press <Enter> or click the 'Go' arrow.
I use this feature sometimes 100s of times a day so this is extremely annoying as it adds considerable time and extra clicks to each new link I click.
I'm wondering if it could be a problem with one of my plugins. Can I temporarily disable them all at once to see if that's it?
I will try disabling the tab related plugins.
I've tried toggling 'Don't load tabs until selected' on the Tabs page from Tools menu, Options.
Any help would be thoroughly appreciated as I would like to return to being a Firefox Fan

It is unlikely this issue is to do with Firefox upgrading. Firefox 36 will come out any day soon you should then be on that rather than considering an outdated Firefox 34 which is now not secure, and not supported.
    * See don't [[Install an older version of Firefox]]
You have not listed your plugins, and Yes you could try using Firefox's add-on manager to make sure they are all set as click to activate or even temporarily set as never activate.
I am not familiar with the add-on
    * UnloadTab 0.24.7 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unloadtab/
That certainly may be part of the problem try deactivating that with Firefox's addon manager. For all I know this may be the intended behaviour of that addon.
Also troubleshoot the issue with Firefox's safe mode, remembering that does NOT disable plugins you will still need to do that manually.

  • Had acrobat 8 instaled today i downloade a U torrent and suddenly acrobat turned into u torrent on all my adobe files .. went to open with clicked on acrobat and then it changed to Filemaker which ihave installed.. how can i get back to acrobat???? help

I originally had acrobat 7 in my machine when Adobe told me that they won't support it and gave me 8 by a direct download to my pc about 4 months ago.  Great worked fin today i uploaded U Torrent and suddenly all my acrobat files turned into U torrents so i clicked on open with and clicked on acrobat and now the files show filemaker Pro which i do have installed..  I need to get back to acrobat for my bills that i send out .. i am disabled and run a small business from home.. all my invoices are now corrupt can you help  please..

It sounds like you do not have a backup. You might consider a restore to before you installed the problem program. Can you open Acrobat by going to the Acrobat folder and clicking on Acrobat? If so, go to Help>Repair. After that, try the updates if you are not current. Hopefully that will resolve the problem. There is a chance that the program you downloaded as not a proper version and had a virus.

  • LightRoom 2.3 Does not show up in "open With" when image right clicked..Why?

    Hi,
I noticed that when I right click on an image and highlight OPEN WITH LightRoom does not show up as a choice.. Just CS4 and other programs. Is there a way to get it to show up?

You can do it. Right-clicking and "opening with" LR is no different than dragging a file from Windows Explorer into the grid view. In either case the import dialog will be launched. If it's already in the catalog you'll get that dialog.
Windows is seemingly unpredictable from time to time as to adding file associations to the context menu. In any case, if you go to the bottom and click "choose program" you can select LR from the expanded list, or navigate to find it if necessary (which shouldn't be necessary).
Typically once you choose it once, it will continue to appear in the short list for that file type, though it depends what new pieces of software you install and how they're associated with file types either upon or after installation.
You can also drag the file(s) from your Explorer window into the grid view, or drag onto the LR icon on your desktop or in your quick launch, which will launch LR and bring up the appropriate dialog.

  • "Open with" or "choose default program ..." Context menu broken.

    Hi,
I have what appears to be a Context menu handler issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium - 64Bit.
I just discovered that if I right-click a file ( .txt , .avi , etc), and attempt to use "Open With", I do get a previously used list of programs to select from in the drop down list that appears. However, if I then select the "choose default program ..." dialog box, to find an alternative program to use, I keep ending up with the error message:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel ."
I tried re-booting without success. Looked at system restore and (STUPIDLY), I only had 2 very recent restore points to go back to, (I've since increased the restore storage allowance for the drives). Restore doesn't take me back to a usable state for this issue.
The default file types doesn't seem to be the problem, as all my files do have default programs associated with them. I can even select one of the alternatives from the right-click pop-up option menu, and the file open appropriately. I can also open and use the Default Program application via Control Panel.
The error message comes up as soon as I click on "choose default program...", from the bottom of the pop-up menu. It's as though that dialog isn't associated with the "Open with'' application anymore.
When I can get to the "Open with" application through other means, ..... the "Always use...." is greyed out, so it becomes a permanent selection / rather than temporary. I know I can sort a work-around out to re-select a default program, in a round-about way, ... but I'd just love to sort whatever has gone wrong with the right click context menu.
Whilst browsing around, I came accross this (but for Windows XP):
Clicking the "Open With" or "Choose Program..." option always opens the file with Notepad?
Note the second suggested error message. It's almost exactly what I'm getting in Win 7.
XP: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Win 7 (my error message): "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs controll panel."
Might I be on the right track, by any chance? Could this Registry key have become corrupted? Here's what I found...........
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
Then double clicked default, and here is the value data for (Default):
    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
If it's not this key, then I feel sure it's a Context menu handler that's become corrupted, for "Open with'' somewhere. I'm hoping someone might point me in the right direction. I'm reasonably confident in backing up / exporting and saving Registry keys - just not knowledgeable enough to know where to root around and know what should or shouldn't be there.
Apologies if this ends up in the wrong forum.
    Any help much appreciated thanks.

When one has, say, a .tiff image stored in the Documents folder how does one change the "open with" default? For instance, if Photoshop is given as the default, how does one change this to Preview?

    HI,
Right or control click the file, then click Get Info. Click the Open With discovery triangle and select the application you want to open that file with. You may have to click Other and navigate to the Applications folder to select the app, ie., Preview.
