'Control Click' to select layer when inside a group?

You can hold the [Ctrl] key and click something in your document to select its layer. If however you click something that is inside a group, the whole group is selected. Is there a way around this other than right clicking it and choosing its layer from the context menu?

You know I’ve never used that, i had some old graphic software back in the early 90's that worked like that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Unfortunately it still selects the whole group, when you click a layer contained in a group (which technically is the point of a group though)

  • Crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object

CS4 InDesign crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object. Preferences have been reloaded, the program has been reinstalled, all without any effect towards this issue. Any suggestions?

Yeah, it was InDesign Hangs when right clicking on graphic.
There was a lot of head-scratching and the rather unsatisfying conclusion was when the OP removed ancient applications that might have been a choice for "Edit Original," then the problem went away.
I guess the conclusion is that right-clicking on an image iterates over the possible apps that can open an image (for Edit With and Edit Original) and does [something], and for some reason that [something] was hanging. Not clear what the app was. But presumably if you right click the file in the Finder and look at the list provided by Open With, it is similar.
Or you could try the suggestions I offered to the OP in that thread that it looks like he never used.

  • Click to select layer(s) missing in CS5?

Just upgraded to CS5 from CS3...long-time Photoshop pro user. I have always simply clicked an element in the photohsop image which selected that layer. Holddown shift while clicking several layers selected all those layers. Not it seems the only way to not use the layers palette to select layers is by right-clickingon EACH layer and then selecting that layer from a right flyout contextual menu. Is this a change? Why does the Adobe team change things like this. We power users are programmed to work fast using this kind of shortcut, and now so many of my shortcuts are changed. Another example is that when in the layer adjustment/curves palette, I used to be able to use command + 1,2,3 to select R G and B channels to edit. Now it has been changed to something else, option + 3,4 and 5!! WTH?
Please, someone get back to me on this layer selection question. Setting somewhere? I just want to be able to quickly click on something in the image to select that layer without right-clicking, flyout, select blah blah blah.

With the Move Tool active, check the Auto-Selection option in the option panel...you can choose either Layers or Groups...and as with any update, it's useful if you learn how to use it. BTW, did you know whith any tool selected, holding Command/Control allows you to see a context menu with all the layers currently under the cursor? Most power users find this function more efficient than using Auto-Select.

  • Photoshop CC - Cannot control + click to select a different shape while using the pen tool?

I used the pen tool constantly in photoshop cs6 and would often use control + left click to select a different shape while still using the pen tool.
I'm now forced to switch to the move tool to select another layer? Why was this feature removed / changed?
Fix: After fooling around more, here is how I fixed it:
The new Direct Select Tool by default is set to "active" layers. Switch it to "all layers"

A new problem = Selecting multiple points with control + click + drag is selecting ALL shape layers... Jesus christ, why was this changed????
I now have to double click the shape I want to select? Why? What is the point of this?

  • Layers palette "jumps" to currently selected layer when turning off...

When a layer in the layers palette is selected - which I guess means when an object is selected - if I scroll the palette to another location and click the eyeball to hide a different layer, the palette jumps back up to the active layer. Really inconvenient when I want to disable one layer and enable another. I guess I can remember to enable first, then disable - the enabling causes the chosen layer to become the current active layer, so as long as the both layers I'm changing visibility on are near each other there's no jump in the palette.
Is this a beta app or what?

    Howdy.
Where are you clicking on the layer?

  • Right click not selecting layer

I have been using a trial version of Photoshop CS5 and have noticed that when I right click on a layer, the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected. Is this a bug of CS5? This gets rather annoying when you have a lot of layers and would like to get directed on the layer pallet just by clicking on the layer on the stage. Has anyone else found this a problem?

the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected.
… makes no sense. Or means something different to what you intended. As a guess try these…
    • Upgrade your trial to 12.0.1.
    • As C… suggests, Command clicking with the Move Tool auto-selects any layer you click on. There is also an option in the move tool called "auto select'  that you can change, which toggles this behavior.

  • Shift+Click to Select Layer is moving layer across workspace

    Hello everyone.
When I Shift+click to select a layer, this layer moves and continues to move across the stage with each shift+click?
    Weird!
Anyone ever have a similar issue or any suggestions?
    Thanks hardlee

No the layer object starts moving across the stage.
I hook up my laptop to my office monitor and use usb keyboard and mouse while at office.  It happens in this scenario and also happens when out of the office using my laptop touch pad.  Shift plus LeftClick and the layer starts moving, sometimes it will move clear off the main stage in to the greyed out area around the graph.
    Again  weird...

  • Cannot select layer when there is a Path

    CS6 Windows
I am unable to select the layer to transform it when I have a path created. The only way I can select the layer is to delete the path.
Must be something simple but cannot figure it out
Please help this relative PS newb

    Not a problem.
When something does not work, as I anticipate it to in PS, I start looking for what else I might have selected, or what else is active.
I often forget that I have a Selection, which I've Hidden, and then many of my Tools just do not function (unless I happen to be using them in that Hidden Selection).
I also find that I will create a Text Layer, and then go to Stroke, or Fill a Path - grayed out - until I either make a regular Layer Active, or create a new regular Layer, as DrStrik9 points out. Happens to me about once per week.
    Good luck, and happy editing,

  • Control-click doesn't select multiple thumbnails?

Two of our workstations have recently lost the ability to control-click to select multiple thumbnails. Control-click works in other applications, including Windows Explorer, but control-clicking in the thumbnails pane in Acrobat simply selects the next thumbnail - it doesn't add to the current selection as it used to.
These workstations are running Acrobat Pro 9.4.5. They are fully updated. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much. I did do a forum search but didn't find this. I appreciate you sending me in the right direction.

  • CS3 -  Select Layer Shortcut

    Hi...
Photoshop CS3... What's the shortcut to selecting a layer in a document?
Control clicking only selects the Layer Set. What's the shortcut to selecting an individual layer?
I know that Right Click gives the option.. but is there a keyboard shortcut?
    Grateful for help...
    Thanks,

    Hi...
Anyone? Is there a shortcut to selecting an individual layer within a Layer Group? As mentioned in the first post Control+click on an object selects the Group.
    TIA

  • Contextual menu won't come up with control click

I have a user with a one button mouse who can't bring up a contextual menu with control click any longer. When you control click, you get a new finder window or sometimes it brings up Fontbook instead of a contextual window!
it happens no matter who logs into machine. I have tried, thus far, repairing permissions and trashing the finder.plist under this one user. No effect.
I could not find anything when doing a search on the Knowledge Base, so am posting here. Has anyone seen this behavior in 10.4 yet?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

Try removing the items in these folders:
    "/Users/username/Library/Contextual Menu Items"
    "/Library/Contextual Menu Items"
Log out/in or restart, if things return to normal you can then start putting items back one at a time until you find the offending item. One common bad actor is a contextual menu item from StuffIt.

  • Direct Select Align to Object in Group

As it is, when you direct select an object and align to it, they both move even if you click one to align to. If this behavior could be made consistent with the normal select where you can click one of the objects again to target the "align to" it would help.

This "Feature" needs to go! I can't cntrl+click shapes to edit them anymore. WHY would adobe remove this / change this???

    Hi
It shows just 4 always as an option in the "open with" lsit. Also I haven't downloaded any apps for a while so why would it start now?
Do you know how I can estabilsh how many apps are counting toward this 10 and what they are?

  • (Layers Palette) When selected, layer is highlighted in grey, not blue.

When I select a layer, it is highlighted in grey (in the layers palette) and I am unable to edit it. My current process for making a layer editable is as follows:
    Select layer (highlighted in grey)
Double click layer (opens "Layer Styles" dialogue box)
    Close "Layer Styles" dialogue box
Layer is now highlighted in blue and can be edited.
I am currently running Photoshop CS5.1 on a windows machine which is using Windows 7.

  • How do I use just 1 click with move tool (command v) to select layer within group?

    I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Photoshop CS3 10.0.
Is there a way to click just once with "command V" to select a layer within a group?
I used to be able to do it, and on my laptop I can do it now (same OS and Photoshop) but the mac I use for my design work won't do it...I have to also right click and select the layer that is highlighted. I have a many multilayered Photoshop document with lots of groups, and it's an extra time consuming step.
Is there some preference I can turn on? Or some other simple keystroke?
    Thanks so much!

    Glad I could help, Emily
