Control-command-D and Dictionary.app discrepancy

I often use control-command-D with Safari to get definitions of words I find on web pages. I always thought that the dictionary used by control-command-D was the same one used by Dictionary.app.
But increasingly I am finding words that are in Dictionary.app aren't in the dictionary used by control-command-D (see the screen shot below), so I guess there is more than one dictionary. Can anyone point me to where in OS X the dictionary file for control-command-D resides? Is there any way to make it consistent with the one used by Dictionary.app? Thanks.

It's either a defined subset of the dictionary used in Dictionary.app or an entirely different dictionary. I'd like to know which one it is if possible, and where in the system it is stored.
More words in Dictionary.app but missing from command-control-D, from the same Wikipedia page,
are infallibility, inherently, and nonexistence. Interestingly, Gnosticism has a command-control-D definition, while Agnosticism does not, despite both having an entry in Dictionary.app.
Even more interesting: Typing nonexistence in the field right now resulted in Safari underlining it as a misspelling. Safari didn't do that for infallibility or inherently. Same thing in TextEdit - nonexistence was underlined; inherently was not. So that suggests a third dictionary or third defined subset - the one used by applications for spell checking.
This is getting stranger all the time...

Do you think this product is possible?

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Control-Command-D Hover Dictionary Definitions

I used to be a huge fan of being able to hover over a word in Safari, press the shortcut Command-Control-D and have a definition pop up below the word without having to launch Dictionary.app.
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and have found myself no longer able to do this. Is there some sort of way to turn this functionality back on? I used this feature all the time.

This doesn't solve my original problem. In Leopard I could pull up a definition without having to launch Dictionary using the aforementioned command. What I am looking for is that specific functionality... hover + keyboard command to bring up a small box WITHOUT having to launch Dictionary. This functionality was built-in in Leopard... I'm wondering what's happened to it in SL.

  • Parental Controls(Enable Restrictions) and installing apps through ITunes store (PC)

Through Parental control(Restrictions), the iTunes Store and Installing apps can be disabled on iPhone. Now is this feature can prevent apps getting installed if Apps are purchased through iTunes Store in PC and synced with iTunes? Is it possible to disable syncing with iTunes?

So you are saying that, even if there is Restrictions, with iTunes and Installing apps disabled, applications can be purchased through iTunes in PC and can be synced with iPhone and get the applications installed. Is that a correcy assumption?

  • MacBook was frozen so I hit control, command, power and now everything is gone other than the start button.  Can anyone help?

The sceen is now blue.  The dock, all applications and every icon on the screen is gone.  What remains is the apple start button and the drop down menus of whatever application I choose as "recent items" from the start menu.
I've tried to restart but it opens back to this.
    Thanks.

I restarted holding down the D key and it rebooted with everything.  Yippee!

  • Remote app: control command not available

    Hi all,
I am using Remote app 2.3 on a iPhone 4G and an iPad 1 together with Apple TV 1st gen (software version 3.0.2).
On the ipad I can see the control cross as an icon to control Apple TV with finger moves.
Unfortunately on my iPhone, remote only shows the following standard icons in the menu bar: Genius, Lists, Artists, Search and more.
I can't find any control field.
Does anyone has an idea why the app is missing the control command in the iPhone's version?
    Kind regards
    Günter

    Hi vazandrew,
    thank you for your tipps.
I selected Apple TV in the two squares (I have two entries my media library of macbook and my Apple TV).
In a youtube tutorial I saw that if you control your macbooks media library, no gesture interface is visible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUzy8jcjvPs&feature=related (min 4:30) If you select your Apple TV, the interface is shown.
I can imagine that remote app does not recognize Apple TV as a device that can be controled with the gesture interface. What do you think?
So I tried next the complete homesharing activation on every device.
Infortunately - even if selected the homesharing option in my macbook and the remote control, the menu for Apple TV stays without the icon of gesture interface.
So I disconnected my library from Apple TV (which copies the contents of my macbook on the harddisk of Apple TV) and I hoped that only streaming of the media library to the Apple TV could help. But no fortune (even the connection via my wlan router broke very often down, when the macbook streamed to Apple TV).
It is now still copying the contents again on it - approx. 120 GB - so I will have to wait to try out other things.
As I said, my iPad 1 works properly with the gesture interface.
    Kind of strange thing... :-)
    Kind regards,
    Günter

  • TS1702 I downloaded a free Merriam-Webster dictionary app for use on my iphone 5.  I thought I executed the steps to download it properly...I do see it in my App Store 'purchased' list, but I don't see it actually activated and ready for use anywhere...he

I downloaded a free Merriam-Webster Dictionary app for use on my iphone 5.  I thought I followed the download process properly, but cannot see that the app is launched on my phone.  I have checked my phone for 'updates' and the app is listed among the ones I have purchased.  I clicked on it and it began installing, however, it still has not launched.  I get a message screen to sign in with my Apple ID, which I tried, and I get the message that I have purchased this app and it will download.  When I try to sign in, I get the message that it can't connect to the itunes store and to retry.  I've done that several times without any luck...not sure where else to look for the 'working' app.  I did try re-booting the phone...even did a 'hard reset' to no avail...help?

  • IPad using Kindle App and Dictionary

I am using the Kindle App on my iPad and like the dictionary function there. I am reading books in english and italian and wonder if there is a way to change the dictionary so that I get english with english and italian with italian.
I downloaded an italian dictionary as a separate App, but that isn't currently "synced" to the kindlebooks.
    Any thoughts??
    Bob E.

The dictionary function is part of the Kindle app itself - it doesn't connect to any dictionary apps you mave have downloaded. It doesn't appear to be configurable at all. You may want to contact Amazon support for more information (or submit a suggestion which you can do via email direct from the app)

I bought a second apple tv and would like to control it with the remote app but cannot find a way to add a second device.  Anyone have an idea how to do that?

I'm having the same issue and would like to get some help.  I set up a second Apple TV in our bedroom and wanted to be able to control it using my iPhone like I do with the Apple TV in the living room.  The new Apple TV is active on the network and I've made sure the same Apple ID is used for both the Apple TV as well as the Remote App on my iPhone.  I'm just wondering what I might be overlooking.

I am not able to use either Mask or Image Control Commands. They are always grayed out no matter what the situation, document, etc. Can anyone help me? I am using Pagemaker 7.0 and Windows XP. Thank you.

  • My MacBook pro is frozen and I can't restart, even by using the power button or control command

Hi- my MacBook pro froze about an hour ago and I've been unable to reboot it. Any suggestions? I've tried the power button, control + command + restart, erc ad none of them do anything.

Hold down the power button for 6-7 seconds.  It will power off, then click the power button to turn on again.

  • TS1702 I can't install Tap-dictionary app...when I do the 'paste command'..it's my last word that I copy who appears...

I tried many times to install 'Tap-dictionary' app on my Ipad 3...the last step 'enter address and 'Paste' doesn't work...
    why?

Are you sure it's the disc that came with that Mac?  It should be gray, and the model and version (10.6.x) should be printed on it in very tiny type.  It will only work on the same model and build period.
When you erased the internal HD, dis you specify the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or, if you really need it, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled) Format?
Why are you doing this?  Was there a problem?  If so, what (that might provide a clue)?

  • Hi I bought the oxford dictionary app a while ago and it worked fine . Now with the new iOS it starts and closes instantly. I don't want to buy it again. Who can I turn to?

Hi I bought the oxford dictionary app a while ago and it worked fine . Now with the new iOS it starts and closes instantly. I don't want to buy it again. Who can I turn to?

Try closing the app via the device's multitasking bar and see if it works when you re-open the app : double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.
If the app still doesn't work then try deleting the app from your device and redownload it (assuming that it's still in the store) via the Purchased tab in the App Store app - or resync it from your computer's iTunes (if you don't have a copy of the app in the Apps part of your computer's iTunes library then copy it over via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases before deleting it).
If that also doesn't get it to work then contact the developer.

  • Look up in Dictionary.app

Is there any way to look up a word directly in Dictionary.app?
Control clicking a selected word, choosing "Look up..." brings up the definition(s) in a pop up window. Then clicking on "Dictionary" takes you to the Dictionary application... But I prefer the former (Snow Leopard) option of going directly to Dictionary.app
    Can I get this back?

OK. Here's a service that reproduces the desired effect...
--Look up in Dictionary service script
    on process(_selection)
         tell application "Dictionary"
      activate
             open location "dict:///" & _selection
         end tell
    end process
Save the above as an Applescript with name "Look up in Dictionary"
Pack up as a service with ThisService (available from http://wafflesoftware.net/thisservice/ )
Make sure it's checked in System Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts/Services
Add shortcut CTRL + CMD + D (replacing the default "Look up...")
There you go! Gone is that lurid animation and pop-up window.
