Control file in hot backup?
I am just wondering, and wants to know......can we place control file in Hot Backup.. if yes...then are not the contents of controlfile changed after the backups?

Backed it up with rman ... backup database Does the backup is taken is of full backup, then you can restore the controlfile. Basic thing, when ever the System.dbf is backup implicity the control file backup is done, don't forget, then is no need to set autobackup on looking into this case.
try to restore as from backup, sa I stated above, your issue will be solved, remember if any strucutal changes are carried out after your backup, then those can not be recovered based on backup controlfile (like addition of new datafiles)

Need a help: how to recover using backup control file?
Please a help:
First computer
1. I create a database
2. put it in archive mode,
3. shutdown and made a cold backup
4. Created backup control file (alter database backup control file to trace)
5. I started up and created some archived log files.
Second Computer
1. I copied all files created in the step 3 above except the control file
2. I create all the same map directory on the 2nd computer as in the 1st computer
3. I recreate the control file from the script got in the step 4 above
4. I Copy archived log files generated at the step 5 in the local directory in the second computer
5. I set the logsource and set the autorecovery to on
6. I recover the database: RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROL FILE UNTIL CANCEL
Error got:
the archived log file applied do not go beyond the first one?,How could I do to applied all archived log files copied from the first computer to the second computer to have the same data?

Advice on having a control file (online) on the same disk as backups
The following database files layout provides a no data loss configuration if the DiskArray #1, which stores the database, fails.
I have every think I need in the flash recovery area (DiskArray #2): backups, archived logs and online redo.
DiskArray #1:
- datafiles
- control file (mirror copy 1)
- Online redo log (mirror copy 1)
DiskArray #2: (flash recovery area)
- control file (mirror copy 2)
- Online redo log (mirror copy 2)
- archived logs
- backups
But some one raise the following scenario:
What happen if the diskArray #2, which has one control file copy, fails?
The instance should abort. Can it corrupt the current online redo, controlfile or a datafile?
If it does I would be in a dead end; of course I have regular offsite backups, but I may lose up to two weeks.
Lossing the database because the backup array fails is not acceptable.
Should I avoid any control file in the backup array?
Oracle recommend having control file copies in separate disk location and one of it in the flash recovery area.
Anyone have suggestions.
I am a bit scaredCan it corrupt the current online redo, controlfile or a datafile?Could that someone tell you why he thinks so ? I have seen loss of controlfile and loss of mirrored (duplexed) redo logs but that doesn't corrupt the good controlfile and redo logs and datafiles. unless someone or some process copies the corrupted files over to the good array !
You'd have to restart the instance with that controlfile excluded from the parameter file.
You'd lose your archivelogs and backups. If you have no tape backups you'd lose the ability to restore as well (being another "someone", I will ask "What happen if the diskArray #1 fails at the same time or 5 minutes after or 6 hours after diskArray #2 ?").

Oracle Hot Backup Script Windows Server 2003
Hello,
Does anyone here have a working Oracle 10I database hot backup script for Windows Server 2003? If so can you please post it here.
Thanks.Here is a basic batch script I have used for a hot backup of Oracle databases using RMAN
Will just need to update some locations based on you environment just check all the comments and change what you need to but this can be scheduled to run regularly through the windows scheduler for database backups.
This will take a hot backup and backup the archive logs.
Let me know if you have any quesitons.

You may have to catalog use the control file piece to avoid the error.
RMAN> catalog backuppiece ...Another idea is to test the restore using something like this :

Control file lost and datafile addeed restore/recovery with no data loss
Here i have tried to the following
created new table called t2 and made sure data went to a specific tablespace...
took a level 0 backup
removed the control file
added couple of datafile to above tablespace and then inserted more data
then went out to restore control file and the database...but datafile still could not be opened ?? what did i do wrong here....

Upto this i was clear, but now i cann't understand when you actually dropped the control file from you database(in running stat) how can you perform "alter system checkpoint" and other "alter tablespace.." command? Once controlfile is inaccessible, oracle database is not suppose to function. -

If you have backup, try recover controlfile from rman backup( you should know DBID).
Anyway If you don't have rman backup. so recreate controlfile (if you have backup control file to trace, you can use it):
1. Take a full backup of the database, including all datafiles and redo
log files.
2. Connect / as sysdba or as sys user and do a STARTUP NOMOUNT.
3. Issue the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement.

Creating a control file copy with ASM
Configuration is Oracle 10.2, RAC, and ASM (Automatic Storage Management). I would like to create a second copy of the control file.
If this wasn't ASM, I could just bring down the database, copy the control file using an operating system command, modify the pfile to reference both the original and new copy, and then restart the database.
Since this is ASM, I cannot use an operating system command to copy the control file, and RMAN "BACKUP" (which is the only way I know to make a copy of the control file) will only work if the database is up. When I "restore" the control file using RMAN and change the pfile to reference both control files I get a message like the following when attempting to start the database:
ORA-00214: control file '+ASMGROUP1/db1/controlfile/current.271.566646845'
version 2241 inconsistent with file
'+ASMGROUP1/db1/controlfile/current.268.566661765' version 2236
Soooooo, how do I make and implement a second copy of a control file using ASM.

This is not testet so presede with caution as it is meant as a discussion ;-)
As I see it there is no logical way to extend the instance by adding a controlfile.
The following procedure might work (has not been tested)
I think you have to make a controlfilebackup with the database closed in normal mode using RMAN.
Further you might be able to edit the pfile with create pfile from spfile and further create spfile from pfile. Extending the controlfile parameter to represent number and names of controlfile needed.
With this done, the database is closed normal with a controlfile copy presented somewhere on the filesystem.
startup mount;
restore controlfile from '<backup controlfile location>'
alter database mount;
alter database open;
Any thoughts about this procedure guys?

This is 9i on Windows 2000.
I'm trying to restore a control file from a backup made by RMAN on another server.
I expected Oracle/RMAN to choke because it knows the backup file was not made from this servers database.

Is there a way to force RMAN to restore a file, in a situation like this?

What do you mean by this statement ? Do you mean that the servers are on different platforms ? If so first you need to do RMAN platform conversion to able to recognize the controlfile.
If not, Can you make sure of the following
1) source and target servers are same operating system
2) source and target database homes have same versions. -

I have a question about spfile and control file. Now I backed up database daily with spfile. And since I have set the rman configuration about "CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF;". It seems I don't have control file backup. Suppose one day, i need to recover my database from the backup and the control file is gone. Could I restore the control file from either backup(which should be the case) or spfile? Thanks in advance.

Controlfile and SPFile are two different things. Let's say the controlfile is the heart of your database. It holds the complete databasestructure. That is the path+filename of all datafiles and redologs. To loose the controlfile is a very bad thing. Becaus in that case you can't recover to the lates point in time and you have to hope that you even have an old controlfile. That means: Without controlfile no recovery!!!! The SPFile holds the instanceparameters for your instance. The loose of that is not as critical as the loose of the controfile. There are many ways to regain a SPFile. e. g. all instanceparameters used for an instancestart are listed in the alert log file. It's not very easy but you may use them to rebuild your spfile. As a conclusion I recommend you to enable CONTROFILE AUTOBACK to get a backup of control- and SPFile every time you make a databasebackup.

How to recover datafile.when control file auto backup is off
hi friend
i took hot backup of my database using following command
rman>backup database;
in my case controlfile auto backup is off.
and i have lost my all controlfiles as well as datafiles except spfile.
i have recovered control file using dbms_backup_restore package.
know i am able to mount database using following command
rman> startup mount;
when i wrote following command
rman> restore database;
i got following error
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile name found to restore
enven i have backup of datbase.
can anybody tell me how to recover datafiles in this case.

You should change you backup script to be something like

I can't perfom the proper backup - no room at the servers at the moment so I thought of making physical copies of datafiles and maybe control files. Though I'm not sure whether it's save or not and actually what files I have to take. Should I shutdown the database first hand?

Before planning the backup, Check for the following things.
1. Archiving mode of database(archive log or nonarchivelog).
2. How critical is the database.
If the database is in noarchivelog mode then you should shutdown the database first and then take the physical backup of All datafiles, control files and Parameter file.
If the database is in archivelog mode then you can simply take a online hot backup of the database. In the documentation you can get the method of taking hot backup.

Hello-
I was looking over some configurations that was setup by another DBA.
There are 3 control files created but they all are on the same disk/directory.
Control file auto backup is on to tape.
If there was a hardware failure and all three control were corrupted/lost then a backup would be used but
full recovery and RESETLOGS would be needed which would lead to redo data loss.
If I configured 1 control file on a seperate disk. I would be able to copy this one and create 3 files again and the database
would be started again without needing recovery if all else was fine.
If the control keeps track of redo logs SCN, Archive logs history and RMAN backups when these change then wouldn't another control file backup/ trace need to be done ?
Control File Trace only alllows to rebuild the database not to copy. How often is the need to taken ? Every change in the database ?
Backup to the Flash Recovery is another backup not an updated copy to copy from but to restore/recovery with.
Do have have these theories correct and my best setup would to send at least one to another disk.

a. RESTORE a backup of the controlfile
OR
b. CREATE CONTROLFILE (from a script)
In either case, you do NOT need to do an INCOMPLETE Recovery. You will be doing a COMPLETE Recovery (if you have the Online Redo Logs). However, an OPEN RESETLOGS is still required. The %r in the log_archive_format since 10g allows ArchiveLogs to be retained through ResetLogs.
