Control or Option Click in Finder Problem

Mouse click plus option Key, or Mouse Click with control key, all Icons on desktop disappear and reappear. Drive Icon moves, and new window appears.
I have reinstalled OS 10.4, ran all updates, problem still exists. Problem does not exist in other login accounts on machine. Only main use account, mine.
Any ideas?

If the problem is in your account only, take a look in this folder:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items"
Remove anything you find and log out and back in. Generally the Finder quitting when you control click is caused by an incompatible Contextual Menu item. One of the commonest causes is one from StuffIt.

  • Every time I click a folder arrow to open...finder reframes my window view. And other finder problems

When using the finder windows sorted either by name or date modifed, when I click a folder arrow, the window reframes to the center (or some other spot) that means I need to scroll back to the folder. When I change an item in a folder when sorted by date modfied, it of course moves to the top, but my window view stays centered where I am, and I have to scroll to the top to find the folder I'm working on. Both situations have the feel of "what I'm working on just dissappeared". I have become used to it, but it is one of the things in Lion that I hate. Is there a workaround...a way to keep the finder window view where it is when I click the open folder arrow, or to reframe to the top if I make a folder change and have the sort set by date modifed?
Mail behaves in the same manner where the view of read and unread wildly scrolls itself when clicking an unread mail. I have tamed this by creating a smart mailbox of unread e-mail, but it seems to be some system wide preference for an unknown sort view that I would like to fix.
Also, when I choose the sort by label option in the finder window, all the red pops to the top, but then all the other labels are scattered and not sorted as a for instance...
Perhaps this is fixed in Mountain Lion?
    Thanks for any help.
I am preparing to upgrade to Mountain Lion this weekend, but if I have some system problem, I would like to resolve it before I go forward.

    Hello Josegued,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you may have a customized keyboard shortcut created. You can take a look at this article to see how to remove it.

I could not find an option to "report a problem".
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

    Hi, Fridge.
If Finder quits when you either:• Control-click an object.
    • Right-click an object using a two-button mouse. This may be due to either:• Installed software that added a bad contextual menu item.
    • Removed software that left a contextual menu item behind. What software did you last install or remove? Does its documentation refer to its use of Contextual Menu items?
Contextual menu items can be installed in two places:(1) Your Home > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.
    (2) Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder. If the item is in the folder listed in (2), then:
    - Under Tiger or Panther, you'll be prompted to authenticate this operation by providing your Admin password when trashing it.
    - Under Jaguar, you may have to change the Owner to you (via Get Info > Ownership and Permissions) before you can trash it.

After uninstalling and installing several times, Java plug-in is still undetected. Support suggested I open up the control panel and click update but there isn't such an option. The advance tab, there aren't any options to enable or disable plug-ins.

If you're running Java 7, then in System Preferences > Java > Java Control Panel in the Security tab there is a check box to enable Java in your browser. To check for update go to the Update tab.

Firefox crashes as soon as I click on the icon. Even in safe mode. I've tried all options of resolving this problem but nothing is working. I really hate using Safari and Chrome. Please help!

Scan your computer in safe mode for bots, malware, trojan's and viruses. Remove any Found and reboot. If Problem still exists, go to control panel, add/remove programs remove firefox. and then download and reinstall firefox. Remember to always close as many running programs like messangers and widgetts when installing any program. This should fix your problem. only other option is to do a system restore to when you were not having any problems, this works 90% of time.

  • Option-Click on desktop to hide current app hangs the app

I've been getting a weird finder hang lately: option-clicking on the desktop to hide the current application makes the application hang and I can't switch back into it. Selecting it in the dock won't bring the windows back, cmd-tabbing over won't bring the windows back, selecting it in the DragThing process dock won't bring the windows back.
The frustrating thing is that it doesn't happen all the time. Happens mostly with InDesign CS2 and Photoshop CS2. The only way out is to select the icon in the dock and do a force quit. Nothing else hangs.
    Any advice?

Too bad it is an intermittent problem, that makes it harder to chase down. It would drive me nuts, as I use the shortcut all the time. You could try creating a test user and running there for awhile, but since it doesn't happen all the time that may not sort anything out. Have you run all the usual maintenance voodoo? Repair Permissions, clean caches (Tiger Cache Cleaner is useful, but costs money)? Take a look at Doc Smoke's FAQ here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
You might also launch Console and leave it running to see if any error messages pop up. If it is only happening with CS2 programs, it may be some strange incompatiblity problem with them. I haven't seen this, but I only have CS1. You could check in the Adobe forums and see if it is happening to anyone else.

  • Trying to clone in retouch what is option - click?

I am new to the mac trying to retouch my photos using clone.  It keeps telling me to option-click. I have tried clicking on everything and help is no help.

"{Option}" is one of the modifier keys on your keyboard.  (The others are "{Command}", "{Control}", and "{Shift}".)
With the Clone Brush, you hold down the Option key and click the center of the area you wish to use as your source.  Then you click (and drag if you wish) to destination area.
I suggest a book on basic Mac use.  There are several good guides for those familiar with Windows™ computers.
A basic introduction to the Mac OS can be found by going to Finder and clicking "Help→Mac Help".  One of the chapters there is "If you’re switching from Windows...".

  • Cannot right click in Finder column view

    Hello,
I'm having a **** of a time trying to figure out why I can no longer right click in Finder's column view. Everything else seems to be alright.
All other apps and finder view options are ok. Just when in column view, the right click functin for a file of folder is not working, but I can right click in the blank space inside a folder in Finder's column view.
So strange. Such an isolated issue.
I have tried a Disk permission repair, restart, shut down and turn on. I even deleted the "com.apple.finder.plist" file and restarted. Still won't work.
From what I can gather the issue arrised when I received a couple image files from a client via Wetransfer. I scanned the files and no infected files were found.
I have even enabled the hidden files and nothing looks out of the ordinary.
    I'm stumpped.

  • Copy and drag function not working/working sporadically with option click

For some reason when I'm working in the matrix editor and I try to option/click and drag notes - it will work sometimes and not others. I do not understand.

Thank you for posting, I have the exact same problem! iPad 2, with iOS 8 upgrade which crippled my iPad 2 !!!!
I am looking for a fix without reading through so many pages of problems, so thanks you for posting everything so completely. I have tried all those "fixes" too and nothing has worked. I also want to downgrade to the previous iOS which operated well for me.
it is embarrassing for Apple, since they just announced new hardware, they want us all to shell out more money, huh?
    no fix for us?
I will look through these pages, but I doubt anything has been solved, I've been reading about trying to find a fix for over a week to no avail.
thanks for posting your complaint/problem as you were very articulate about the problem.
I also can not copy and paste. (Old clipboard keeps showing up.)
    apps crash.
safari and Chrome browser are equally slow, unresponsive, hang.
crash to black screen. Crash to white screen.
    lots of problems.
(edited to fix some typos which is hard since the keyboard overlays what I am typing.)

  • Steps to take after option-click for second library for ex HD

Sorry to be such a safety nut, I asked this question in iTunes because the software iTunes library manager has an issue right now with iTunes 7.
I was going to get iPhoto manager but would prefer having the same routine for both.
I am trying to find if there is a apple link for instructions for creating a
second (multiple) iPhoto library. I do not want to do any kind of trial and error routine and lose anything.
I would like to make sure that all the prefs are there and that I can add songs to the second library only.
When I option - click a menu pops up stating create / exsisting , I hit the create and a blank iPhoto folder opened . Should it be exsisting ??
are there prefs that have to be changed
Will another menu ask where I want to store the second library ?
I can follow instructions but making changes on the fly scares me.

    17" powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   extra ram

    Gregory:
To move a library to another drive/partition just click and drag the iPhoto Library folder and drag it to that partition.
If you have two libraries and are using them both, one more as a backup and viewing older photos or whatever, you can put the new photos in your working library on the boot drive, annotate them and whatever. Then when you're ready to retire them to the external HD library you can use iView Library Manager as Terence suggested to move albums or rolls to that library like this and keep the annotations intact.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • "Option+click" no go!?!?

Option+click on a folder should open this folder in a new window but previous window should close. Not in Leopard any more though!! Any one else? Solution maybe?
    thanks

Here's what I've noticed after trying different combos of the Finder options:
    1) If you have the toolbar turned off (which also is the only way to completely hide the sidebar...which is another one of my complaints), then it does seem to usually open a new window that shows the new folder's contents as it did in Tiger. But, there are 3 major issues that I think prevent this from working correctly or as wanted by most people:
    a) It seems unintuitive. When the Finder preference for "Always open folders in new window" is checked, the current Leopard functionality seems to ignore this under this circumstance, making it function inconsistently.
    b) I personally don't use the sidebar, especially since it cannot be dragged/minimized all the way to the left as it could be in Tiger. In Tiger, I just hid the sidebar all the way, which let me keep the Toolbar visible. However in Leopard, this isn't possible. You must have both the Sidebar AND Toolbar either visible or hidden together - there is no way to separate their visibility preference.
This is much more of an issue now because of the topic of this thread - making folders "open in new window" every time is now *only available* if the toolbar is hidden.
    c) Even when it opens in a new window, it almost always seems to take on the parent window's view setting. So, (when it works and does popup in a new window) even though the window should be displayed in Icon view, if the parent's window was set to List view, the new window will open separately but for some reason be automatically switched to List view.
...I hope that makes sense. If you're having this problem, I think you'll understand what I mean.
    2) If you have the toolbar turned on, option-double-clicking on a folder to open it in a new window, and close the parent window fails. Instead, what it seems to do is keep the parent window's frame there, and (sometimes) override the new folder's view settings which make the new folder be viewed in whatever the original parent folder's view settings were. For example, if the parent's folder is shown in Icon view mode, all option-clicked windows are shown in that mode regardless of whether they have a different setting, such as to view in List mode. However, this is not always the case...
I can't find any single setting that accurately allows me to know what will happen when option-clicking on a folder to open it in a new window. It definitely doesn't work consistently on my machine (a clean Leopard install). The main problem that also keeps popping up is that when the toolbar/sidebar are showing, and when it doesn't open in a new window, the window will not even resize properly to its settings so that it can show all of the items. This is a pretty big problem, I think it must even be a bug? It makes opening multi-depth folders much slower and unreliable, since the view settings for each folder are kept the same (and are definitely not always as useful as the one I had originally set per-folder).
So all in all, I think this is reduced and unwanted functionality of the Finder and possibly a significant bug. I think when the user sets the "open in new window" Finder preference, it should always be observed and used.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.
