Control Panel icons disappeared

Hi, all.
The icons of certain Control Panels have mysteriously disappeared: Apple Menu Options, Extensions Manager, General Controls, Internet, Keyboard, MacAlly USB Mouse/Trackball, and Startup Disk.
I've tried resetting the PMU, zapping the PRAM, and rebuilding the desktop, all to no avail.
Any suggestions?

Hi, bobinski -
Also, rebuilding the desktop file may help.
To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.

  • Messed Up Control Panel Icons In OS 9

I have a PowerMac G4 which has OS X and OS 9 installed, and recently performed a reformat and fresh install of OS X (Tiger).  While doing so, I copied over my OS 9.2.2 installation to another external hard drive, and copied it back after I had set up OS X again.  But now some of the icons in the control panel are messed up, some are just blank control panel icons as shown in the link below.  How can I fix this, without having to reinstall hopefully?  I've tried rebuilding the desktop with no success.

    Hi, Dave -
It's been a long while since I delved into using ResEdit to 'fix' (or experiment with changing) things in programs. Fired up my OS 9 machine and could not find where precisely to do that using ResEdit. File Buddy makes many things a lot easier in OS 9.
Using ResEdit - open ResEdit, then use the Open item in its File menu, navigate to the item you want to get into and select/open it. You are presented with an array of various resources (ResEdit = Resource Editor). Double-click a resource to open it. Many of the available changes are presented in a GUI format, rather than in raw code; some resources don't have a GUI template, and will open as code only. Note that some of the available menu items will change when you open a resource; investigate those, too.
Important - work only on a copy of the item you want to change. Although changes to an item are supposed to require you to save the changes when you close out of ResEdit, somtimes a change is made anyway. Keeping the original available untouched allows for graceful recovery in case of an 'Oops' event.
If you'd like to try File Buddy, you can get OS 9 version(s) here -

  • Howto Delete Control Panel Icon

Hello. I have a icon on the control panel with no name, which I'd like to delete.  You've seen it - It's the icon when you have no program associated with that particular type of file.  I performed online research the past few days and the closest I came to identifying a remedy is: search for all the .cpl files and delete the offending one.  Except, it's difficult (impossible so far) to identify the correct one because, as I indicated, it has no name.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I found it.  First, thanks for all the suggestions.  It turned out to be the Lenovo Factory Recovery Disk application, which I uninstalled after creating the discs and then deleting the service partition.  Go figure.  I never did eliminate the dead icon; but, simply reinstalled the application.  I'll follow-up if I figure out how to remove the icon before uninstalling it again.  Cheers,

  • [Solved] nm-applet panel icon disappeared after update

I know there are tons of topics here on the nm-applet icon in the panel, but I can't seem to find one that helps me.  I am running xfce4 and the NetworkManager icon was showing up perfectly fine in my notification area until I did an update.  The text of the update log is found here:
    http://pastebin.com/G1sSuw1H
I didn't see anything on the update list that I thought would mess with the nm-applet icon.
NetworkManager itself is working fine.  When I login, I get the little pop-up bubble in the top right corner telling me that I am connected with a button to not show again.  But the icon is just gone.  I believe that I have everything installed that is needed because it was working.  All I did was do the update mentioned, reboot, and it's gone.
    Any ideas???

  • Bug Indesign : unable to access control panels icons

    Hello,
I bought 4 years ago Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Standard. I just changed the PC. So I disabled the version installed on my old PC and install and enabled more on my new pc release. Now, I meet two problems:
    - In InDesign, most tools located on the left panels, right and top of his reach. The boxes are not clickable. FYI, my screen at a resolution of 3200 x 1800.
    - I wanted to install the updates hoping that it would correct the bug. But every time I try, it crashes before the end of the installation with the following message:
"The installation of the following updates failed. If you want to install, correct the problems below, then try again.
    Adobe update InDesign CS5 7.0.4
An error occurred while downloading the update. Quit and try again later. "
The problem recurs every time when I get to the download.
What do you do? Thank you for your help.

thank you so much! It works.
And the second problem? You see what it can come: I can not install updates. Every time I try, it crashes before the end of the installation with the following message:
"The installation of the following updates failed. If you want to install, correct the problems below, then try again.
    Adobe update InDesign CS5 7.0.4
An error occurred while downloading the update. Quit and try again later. "
The problem recurs every time when I get to the download.

  • Menu Bar Icons no longer showing, not able to switch on in control panel

I had sleep problems with my MBP (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2449728&tstart=0) and as such I did a combo update as this could possibly solve it.
However, now all the control panel icons in the menu bar have gone (like the clock, network, airport, etc) and I am not able to switch them on in the relevant control panels. If I hit the tick box 'show in menu bar' of any control panel it ticks it for a split second and immediately removes the tick.
I am able to turn it on via /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/, however after a restart all is back to previous state, no icons in menu bar.
I redid the combo update > no success.
    any ideas?

I did that and all is well in the other account.
in a moment of inspiration, I reinstalled the
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
from a backup and this solved the Menu Bar issue.
    Thanks for thinking with me.

  • How to open the JRE Control Panel from Firefox?

I installed jdk1.5.7 and firefox and I also installed the jre plug-in in firefox. Now my firefox can display my applet now. But it still has a problem here. As we all know, in windows environment, when the applet has been loaded, a java control panel icon will display in the windows system tray area and I can open the control panel which I can monitor the output of my applet.
My problem is how to do this in firefox environment? From where can I open the control panel window then I can monitor the output? By the way, I have opened the setting "Display the control panel" in advanced tab of jre's ControlPanel application.

here is the easiest way to do what you asked...

  • Unspecified error when trying to access Control Panel

I am currently setting up Remote Desktop Services on Server 2012 and I have enabled the policy
"Prohibit access to Control Panel and PC settings".
When a user clicks on the Control Panel icon, or anything else that points to Control Panel (Screen Resolution, Personalize) they get the normal error of
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrcitions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" which is fine and is expected, but they then get the error,
    "Unspecified error".
Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi Tom,
Have you enabled the option to display "Personalization" in Group Policy?
This is because "Personalization" option is linked to Control Panel, so if you prohibit access to control panel, and right click on the desktop select "Personalize", it results in the "Unspecified Error".

  • Uninstall SmartWebPrinting when the control panel offers nothing to remove this program

I have an HP1600 printer. I use Firefox as my browser. Every time I try to open a file, or my browser, the SmartWebPrinting tries to install itself. It is not shown in the "Add or Remove Programs" list. Originally, it was in the list but didn't have the button to click on for removal. I believe my son may have deleted the icon from my list of programs. How can I remove this completetly? I rearely print directly from the internet and it is a nusance when it tries to install.

    Kellers,
    Commentary
If it is related, then I suspect this is the older version of the program.
If it is not showing up in Programs and Features, and assuming it should show up, then it may be because is it indeed disabled due to the incompatibility issues -- that part is good.  The missing bits are bad, obviously.
    Do this first:
Create a Restore Point:   Create a Restore Point – Win7 OR  Create a restore point Win8
    Ideas
Perhaps there is a Folder in the system for your "web print"-- you might be able to find it with a search of the C:\Programs Files or C:\Programs Files (x86) folders.
For example the newer Smart Print is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard
You could try moving the folder out of the way.  I have doubts about this working because I cannot see what is going on elsewhere on your system.  I hesitate to suggest you delete the folder for the same reasons  -- I might do so under some circumstances, but telling someone who is in trouble to do something like that (who does not have an Image of their system on hand) is not something I would do.
    OR...
It occurs to me that you MIGHT be able to fix the problem by updating to the the new version of the program.   I realise you do not WANT the program at all; but a this point if you can update to a working version of the program and THAT version shows up on Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Smart Print >> THEN you could remove the working version.  Poof!
    OR
You could try this if you are willing to reload your Browser from scratch.
    For Example
    Back up your bookmarks
Make a list of your Add-ons that you want to keep.
If you use a fingerprint reader, back up your Webcards.  If you don't know what this means, you don't use a fingerprinter.
If you use the Browser website password manager, make sure you know your passwords...
Download a copy of your Browser.
    Take a deep breadth.
Delete your browser from Programs and Features.
    Reboot your system.
Install the browser from the download.
    Open the Browser.
Manually set up your Add-ons and Plugins.
Import your Bookmarks and, if using, your Webcard backup.
    Set up your other Options
I wrote this on the fly -- your browser setup might differ from the one shown...
Firefox Sync:  I am not sure, but at this point, you could also reset up Sync for Firefox -- I don't use Sync so I am not aware the extent of what it would do.  Assuming you don't have this old webprint issue elsewhere, I suspect you would not inherit from another device or backup.

  • ICloud Control Panel will not open - Windows 7

I bought an iPhone 4s today and just installed the iCloud on my Windows 7 machine. When I first installed iCloud the iCloud Control Panel opened fine, but since then I cannot open it. I can click on the control panel icon but nothing happens. Same for

I have this exact problem, when I try to sign in to icloud control panel it just hangs. I read on one of the other forums that it is something to do with the user profile on the PC and using another user id sometimes works. Interesting thing is if I use the 'Guest' sign in facility on my PC it allows me to sign on to icloud control panel. Still trying to establish what is different in the 2 user profiles?

  • Why does my Control Panel disappear?

I have saved workspaces, and have tried preset workspaces – the Essential one makes my control panel disappear as if I have a second monitor. If I try another workspace, such as Layout, the control panel returns but some of the panels won't extend open. It's really strange. I've done all the basics - restarted, checked for updates, open and close tools, resetting workspaces. I think it's a glitch in the program. I've attached two screen shots. You will see in the first one the blacked out, smaller control panel (which I can't move), and in the second, the Brush Panel is nowhere to be seen even though it is checked (happens with anything I check). This is greatly interfering with my workflow so any help or a patch is much appreciated! Also, hitting (F) to change the view of the file window doesn't change anything for the control panels.
    Thanks!

It sounds like the app may be crashing. Here are some things to try.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Cache. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit Safari and restart. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit Safari by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the Safari app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the app. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

I check this issue in my environment, but cannot repro this issue.
Please check the following path to click the right cpl file:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\MLCFG32.CPL
