Control space after the Drop Cap

We character style drop caps. When the DC is a single character, we use the tracking in the character style to add space to the right of the dropped character. However, this method cannot be used when it is a two character drop, in this case, chapter numbers are dropped 2 lines. We want to adjust the space between the dropped number and the start of text, and keep that space equal on both lines.

The first issue is still that humbled wasn't able to add space after the drop caps and maintain alignment of the text. Bottom line is that his method of using character spacing was a bad hack. I'm pointing out that the alternative solutions he tried (ex. post #4) didn't work because he wasn't using the correct value for the number of drop characters. And per his post #21, he is still assuming that 2 is the correct value to define a double digit drop cap. If he gets past that, solutions to other complications may come easier. In fact, unless he needs some specific sized space HIS WHOLE PROBLEM FROM START TO FINISH could be solved simply by selecting 3 as the number of characters for his drop caps rather than sticking with 2. That would have the effect of including the space after the chapter numbers as part of the drop cap making it larger and adding considerably more space. If he does need more space, then he is going to have to add another character. But that character still has to be included in the DC character count: 12<space>Text (3 drop caps) 12<hardspace>Text (3 drop caps) 12<space><hardspace>Text (4 drop caps) He can even use a tab character for a specific indent if he wants. Just switch a tab for the hardspace above. P.S. The same logic holds true for in single drop caps. If you want extra space after, increase the drop cap count to 2 to include the space after.

There's a font i'd like to use as a body text font, but sometimes the spaces after periods and commas are inadequate. Is there a way to control this in InDesign? or must this be resolved by manipulating the font in a font editor?

I'm not sure either solution will really work well with justified text.
When you say sometimes, it sounds like your text is justified and the space after periods is variable. Peter's GREP solutions would track the space after a period but the amount would still be variable when the text is justified. So you could also look at the Justification setting for the style:
The default Justification setting which allows a significant difference between min and max word spacing, and no difference in letter spacing:
Changing the Word Spacing to 90% | 100% | 120% and the letter spacing to -2% | 0% | 2% creates a more consistent space after the periods.

Create a list style with unique space after the last list item?

I should start by saying that I'm a web designer and therefore extremely used to using CSS for type setting to the point that I now become frustrated when going back to the print world
So here's what I'm trying to achieve:
- I want to create a list style for bullet lists
- I want there to be 3pt space after and space before paragraph breaks
- I want there to be 9pt space after the entire list (or last list item)
I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this short of overriding the space after amount on the last item each time I use my style.

Pay attention to how +"styles work by example"+. Form up the list levels the way you want them and then select them to make the list style.
Personally I can't help remarking on the obtuse behavior of programmers that they manufactured all the problems on the internet and only now, more than a decade later, patch together "solutions" they struggle to implement due to the legacy of all the awful standards we never needed to have in the first place.

btw The last list item is always a problem in typesetting. Usually you deal with it by having a particular style for that or the paragraph afte,r all of which can take multiple forms.

The space (or lack thereof) should have no effect on whether or not the SMS goes through. The spacing is intended to make it easier for the human eye to comprehend the number. I'd start by resetting the network settings in General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.

You may also use a noBreak space after the period at the end of the abbreviation.
If I remember well, in such case the capitalization will not apply.

Style sheeps and the drop caps

Here it is :
I would like to be able to create a style sheet that enables me to have the first letter in my text bloc to be a a drop cap of a different font, size, kerning and colour than the rest of the text in the bloc (see pic hereunder). What I don't want is for this to be applied to anything other than the first letter in the bloc, irrrespective of how many paragraphs there are in the bloc. In other words I do not want this style to be applied to the first letter of each successive paragraph in my bloc.
Simple question, but I'll be damned if I can do it.

You have to create a specific paragraph style with a drop cap and another for the rest of your text.
You can based the first one (with the drop cap) on the second. So if you make any changes in the second they will also affect the first pargarph style. So no big deal.
Also use caracter style for your drop cap.
You can use also the feature "next style": in the paragraph style with the drop cap choose the name of the second in the "next style" pop-up.
If you select all your text and make a right-click you can choose to "apply this paragraph style and next". In one click you will format all your text…

Applescript is exporting folders with a space after the foldername. This is causing problems with an FTP upload of ours. Is there a way to ensure Applescript doesn't insert spaces on the end of folder names?

the fact that you are an admin doesn't mean that you automatically have access to everything. those folders are owned by the system and have restricted permissions. you should not mess with them. those permissions are mostly restricted to prevent curious users with itchy fingers from damaging the system. as an admin user you can change those permissions and give yourself access to those folders but as i said you shouldn't.
any ideas to what it is what to do or why it took over 20 gigs to install?
20 Gigs sounds like a bit too much. have you installed any programs besides leopard itself?

Quicktype adding a space after the selected word.

Does anybody know if the following can be disabled / adjusted or overcome in any way?
If you accept the suggested word then a space is automatically added after the word. If you then wish to add a full-stop, (sorry, "insert a period"!!) comma, exclamation mark etc you have to backspace to the end of the word.
Not earth-shatteringly important nor difficult I know but seriously annoying!

"To drop a tablespace, use the DROP TABLESPACE statement. The following statement drops the users tablespace, including the segments in the tablespace:
DROP TABLESPACE users INCLUDING CONTENTS;
If the tablespace is empty (does not contain any tables, views, or other structures), you do not need to specify the INCLUDING CONTENTS clause. Use the CASCADE CONSTRAINTS clause to drop all referential integrity constraints from tables outside the tablespace that refer to primary and unique keys of tables inside the tablespace.
To delete the datafiles associated with a tablespace at the same time that the tablespace is dropped, use the INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES clause. The following statement drops the users tablespace and its associated datafiles:
DROP TABLESPACE users INCLUDING CONTENTS AND DATAFILES;

Regular Expression for Removing a space after the a... tag?

I'm fairly new to using Regular Expressions, but am in need of one that will help me find all <a...> tags that have a space immediately following that tag and replace it with the exact same tag, but no space following the <a...> tag.
So, for example, a regular expression that will find:
<a href="somelink.html"> Somelink</a>
as well as:
<a href="#" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('sub-nav_button_professional_portal','','images/sub-nav_button_ professional_portal_f2.png',1)"> Somelink</a>
And just remove the space appearing as part of the hyperlink. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

Thought of that, but it would remove spaces from crucial areas of my pages. For example, conditional logic within a script, like:
for (i = 0; i > (a.length - 2); i += 3)
would become:
for (i = 0; i >(a.length - 2); i += 3)
While that wouldn't pose a huge problem, I'm messing up the syntax in order to fix something else, which is why I wanted to go the route of a regular expression. I need to replace all "<a ...> " (space included) tags with "<a ...>" and make sure that the properties within the <a> tag stay in tact.

Package status not appended in the Add Remove Programs in control panel after the installation.

I have a strange problem with "Package status not appended in the Add Remove Programs after the installation.".
Like, onec the package is installed via SCCM, it should be listed in the Add Remove programs with the package name, version and the install date.
At times on random machine these details are not appended. Although the application works fine on the machine, but the correct details are not populated in Add/ Remove programs.
There is no issue with the package as it shows correct details on few other machine where it is installed.
This behaviour is random on random machines. Hence, very difficult to track the reason.

Yes, i have tried Jorgen's suggestion, ans as said earlier. It install the application smoothly on any other machine (any random machine) perfectly with correct details in Add Remove Programs.
As mentioned earlier, the same package, same environment, same set of machines with same OS, it installs correctly on few machines.. and on few its just misses to add correct details in Add Remove progs.
If it was related to package, how does it install corretly on other machines?? How does the same package installs correctly when done manually or by that means by PSEXEC.
To a matter of fact, we are checking our package for the multiple times now, just to make sure it is buldled correctly with correct install scripts. We are trying to search different multiple ways to see what makes the package to skip the
correct entry in the Add Remove.
To add, this is not with one package, it happens with random package with random machine. There is not typical behaviour that could be tracked.
All the installations done via SCCM 07, with admin account.
This looks more tricky and complex then as simple as saying, its the fault of packaging.
I hate to say this but this is NOT a CM07 problem, You will need to work with your packaging team, and use tools like process monitor,psexec and the msi log to determine why it is failing.
Your first step is to find a pc where you can consistent get the setup to fails. once you get that you can use process monitor and the msi log files to determine what is going on.

Sounds like maybe you're using the same channel strip on multiple tracks? Make sure you're creating a new software instrument channel strip for each independent instance of Ultrabeat you want to have. If you use the same CS, then all tracks that use it will have to have the same kit.

Getting Rid of Space After Drop Caps?

Styles are awesome, and using InDesign is a real treat! However, I'm having a rather frustrating problem when exporting to EPUB.
My Drop Caps span only 2 lines, and they display just fine within InDesign itself. Yet, when exporting to EPUB, there's a large space after the Drop Cap. It;s really ugly and screws up the text flow, of course. How do I eliminate this problem??
I'm new to InDesign, so a step-by-step would be great! In case it;s needed, here's the style setup for this paragraph:
1. First two words are small-capped AND bolded
2. First letter is, additionally, drop-capped (2 lines)
The styles are applied separately - no nesting. I can use either CS5 or CS5.5, if that makes a difference. If you have any other questions to help me resolve this, please feel free to ask. Thanks!

I do believe I answered my own question. I also had the first line indented 2p0, just like the other normal paragraphs. I set the drop cap to 0p0 - on a lark - and the problem resolved itself. I supposed, with a drop cap, there's really no need to indent, so I won't!
However, if anyone knows a way to indent the first line 2p0 without the space after a drop cap, that'd be nice to know. otherwise, I'm okay for now. Thanks!
