Controlfile recovery (Oracle 9i Solaris 9)

Hi Guys,
In my environment I had 2 control files 1 and 2. I think 1 got corrupted. so I deleted it then made a copy of 1 to 2. But now nothing seems to work.
SQL> shutdown immediate;
ORA-00210: cannot open the specified controlfile
ORA-00202: controlfile: '/database/oradata/lldev/control02.lldev'
ORA-27041: unable to open file
SVR4 Error: 13: Permission denied
Additional information: 3
SQL>
Pls assist.
Thank you All.

To summarize, did you -
1) copy the control file while the database was up?
2) Copy the correct control file and not the corrupted one.
Best practice is to shutdown the database add a new location with the correct control file copy and hash the corrupt file location. Once the startup is proper, the corrupt control file can be deleted and the corresponding entry removed from the initialization parameters at next database restart.
Could you also post the relevant alert log entries?

  • Oracle into Solaris for Intel

Does the Oracle database for Solaris for SunSPARC, works into a
    Solaris for Intel?
Do you know, where I can download an Oracle for Solaris for
    Intel?
That Oracle database version is the only one, wich is not in the
    OTN download page.

I bought Sun Solaris 8 (Intel platform) from SUN - you just have to pay the media & shipping fees. Oracle 8i (for Intel Sun Solaris8) was included in the package .
Check on www.sun.com for more details.

  • Disk partitioning tool, to install oracle in solaris

I need to install oracle in solaris. Is there any version of solaris for intel processors.
Is there any free disk partioning tool availbale

The partitioning tool (fdisk) you need comes with OpenSolaris 10. First Download this free Operating System from sun.com. Then start the installation. You will be asked to partition your hard disk. The system automatically recognises Windows Installations and Linux Installations on the same disk. Windows Installations will be bootable after the Solaris Installation. Linux and Solaris is not able to use the same disk. Because they have the same boot loader/manager called GRUB and must make a different disk layout for this boot loader. But you can use Linux and Solaris on different disks.
Oracle 10.1 and 10.2 is available for Solaris x64. I strongly recommend to use the 64 Bit AMD64 version. Its a real fun and fast as hell. Supported Raid Controllers can be found at the Solaris driver discussion forum at www.opensolaris.org.

  • Question for using ORACLE with SOLARIS

    Hi Experts,
I have worked Oracle with Linux in one of my projects 2yrs back and i was just a developer, used to write SQL Query, Creating Table and Objects.
Now i got a question from TL which is
Tell me about consequences for using Oracle with Solaris?
I am not worked ORACLE with SOLARIS, Can some one give me the answer for this question with
    1. Difference between ORACLE with LINUX and ORACLE with SOLARIS.
    2. Advantages and Disadvantages Between ORACLE with LINUX and ORACLE with SOLARIS.
    Thanks,
    MuraliDharan V

    Hi MuraliDharan V,
    It would had been better if you had searched first;
    Here is one
Advantage for Linux64-bit Versus Solaris-x86_64 OS in RAC
And beside that your question is incomplete:
    -What Oracle? Database, etc
    -Which Version? 9i, 10g, etc
Aside from that a simple search on google might have answered your question as well.
But I think there is some new trend of dumping questions here before searching.

So many files need more recovery.
The best solution at this point is to apply more archivelogs in order to get offending datafile/s out of FUZZY mode.
In many cases the recovery session may be requesting an archivelog which has not been generated. The reason for this is because the recovery clause included "using backup controlfile"
If this is the case you need to apply the current online redo log to complete the recovery then
    SQL> select * from v$recover_file;
    no rows selected
Find out the current redo log.
    SQL> select member from v$logfile lf , v$log l where l.status='CURRENT' and lf.group#=l.group#;

    Specify log: {=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
    /oradata2/data1/dbase/redo02.log
    Log applied.

D)Open the database with RESETLOGS option.
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;

  • AUTO-EXPANSION OF CONTROLFILE IN ORACLE 8.X

ORACLE SERVER
ORA-1118 'cannot add any more database files: limit of %s
kccrsz: expanded controlfile section 11 from 10 to 20 records
requested to grow by 10 record(s); added 3 block(s) of records
    1. Non-circular reuse (예: datafile record)
    이 type의 record(slot)은 자신이 정보를 담고있는 object(예: datafile)가
    2. Circular reuse (예: archivelog record)
(maxloghistory)
    설정하였다면,
    control_file_record_keep_time=7
    v$controlfile_record_section을 참조한다.

Did you apply any patches to Solaris 8? I have installed oracle on my Solaris 8 PC, but am having trouble getting the oracle univeral installer to install the sample database. I'm getting an ora-03113 end-of-file on communication chanel error.
To help get answers, do a search for oracle in this forum. There were a few good postings that reveal some myths in the oracle install documentation.
fyi... you could readup on the following apps in the on-line doc: lsnrctl, sqlplus, svrmgrl, netasst, dbassist.

  • Oracle 10, Solaris and ZFS

    Hello,
I'm planning to run Oracle 10 under Solaris 10 with a ZFS filesystem. Is Oracle 10 compatible with ZFS? The Solaris-ARC-process uses most of the available memory (RAM) for caching purposes. As other processes demand more memory, ARC releases it. Is such a dynamic memory allocation compatible with Oracle or does Oracle need fixed memory allocations?
    Thanks,
    - Karl-Josef

In principle all should be fine. ZFS obeys all filesystem semantics, and Oracle will access it through the normal filesystem APIs. I'm not sure if Oracle need to officially state that they are compatible with ZFS. I would have thought it was the other way around - ZFS needs to state it is a fully compatible file system, and so any application will work on it.
ZFS has many neat design features in it. But be aware - it is a write only file system! It never updates an existing block on disk. Instead it writes out a new block in a new location with the updated data in it, and also writes out new parent inode blocks that point to this block, and so on. This has some benefits around snapshotting a file system, and providing fallback recovery or quick recovery in the event of a system crash. However, one update in one data block can cause a cascaded series of writes of many blocks to the disk.
This can have a major impact if you put your redo logs on ZFS. You need to consider this, and if possible do some comparison tests between ZFS and UFS with logging and direct I/O. Redo log writes on COMMIT are synchronous and must go all the way to the disk device itself. This could cause ZFS to have to do many physical disk writes, just for writing one redo log block.
Oracle needs its SGA memory up front, permanently allocated. Solaris should handle this properly, and release as much filesystem cache memory as needed when the Oracle shared memory is allocated. If it doesn't then Sun have messed up big time. But I cannot imagine this, so I am sure your Oracle SGA will be created fine.
I like the design of ZFS a lot. It has similarities with Oracle's ASM - a built in volume manager that abstracts underlying raw disks to a pool of directly useful storage. ASM abstracts to pools for database storage objects, ZFS abstracts to pools for filesystems. Much better than simple volume managers that abstract raw disks to just logical disks. You still end up with disks, and other management issues. I'm still undecided as to whether it makes sense to store an OLTP database on it that needs to process a high transaction rate, given the extra writes incurred by ZFS.
I also assume you are going to use an 8 KB database block size to match the filesystem block size? You don't want small database writes leading to bigger ZFS writes, and vice versa.

  • Installation and creation of first database in Oracle on Solaris 5.10

    hi all,
I have dug around and found that /etc/system is no longer used in solaris 10. i found that the command prctl is now envoked to setup the kernel parms.
    I have solaris 10 - oracle 10g - Intel Processor.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide me a link to the doc I need to setup correct kernel parms in my version of solaris and to get dbca to just create an intial database. I keep getting the oracle not available, shared memory, error messages on inital dbca creation of database and I know it is because of kernel parms not being set right. I have followed the instructions found under documentation here but it gives me argument errors when issuing:
    prctl -n project.max-sem-nsems -v 512 -r -i project default
All other params work fine and when I check them they show up as correct. The only doc I could find was for SPARC. I didnt know if this made a difference in setting the parms but I assume it does.
    Thanks.

  • Recovery Oracle 10g XE after disk crash

    Hi!
I am trying to recover 10g XE database for my colleague and experiencing some problems that I cannot resolve.
He had mayor overheating problem and disk crash due to the failure of air conditioning.
    OS: Windows Server 2003
    DB Version: 10.2.0.1.0
After disk crashed I've managed to save image of Oracle data files and tried to recover database using them.
Database was not running in archive log mode so all files that I had were database files, control file, parameter file and redo logs.
First error that I experienced on newly installation of Oracle Express Edition (10.2.0.1.0) was:
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
ORA-00227: corrupt block detected in control file: (block 16, # blocks 1)
    ORA-00202: control file: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\CONTROL.DBF'
By default Oracle XE creates just one control file so I had just one incarnation of control file and apparently that file was corrupted so I tried to recreate control file.
With "ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE" I've created script for new control file but after script execution received error.
    SQL> @c:\ctlfile.sql
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
    ORA-01110: data file 4: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF'
    I also tried to use:
"CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG..." in script but received the same errors.
Apparently database name is wrongly written in header of USERS.DBF and I don't know how to overcome this problem. Possible character set problem or data file corruption...
I used "CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8" character set.
I don't have any RMAN backups because all tapes were destroyed along with tape drive due to the air conditioning failure what caused overheating of small server room.
So if you have any idea how to open database I would be grateful for help.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this Metalink note is not solution to my problem.
My problem is database name written in the file header which is - "\E":
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
It is obvious that database name stated in control file is not "\E" and because of that create control file script fails.
I don't know is data file corrupted and because of that I have in file header "\E", or this is some problem due to the character set, or XE Oracle software version, or something like that.
    Anyway thanks for your help!

    Marko
