Controling itunes on another mac

Hi there.
I really want to be able to control itunes on my main mac from my iBook. I have wireless networking and so far have tried:
AirControl Which is really really bad.
iHam on iRye. Nice interface, totally chokes on large libraries, I gave up waiting for it after 10 minutes.
SlimServer (Actually for the squeezebox devices) This is freeware which apparently can control itunes, I only seemed to get as far as getting the software to start playing, but I want it to stream out the main macs audio however its streaming it wirelessly into the ether.
netTunes. Probably the best of the lot, seems to do little more than show the actual itunes window on my main mac on my iBook, however the quality is appalling, you can barely read the window, plus they want what I think is far to much money.
I feel confident that one day apple will integrate this in, surely they have too, whats the point of a airpot thingy for streaming tunes if you have to run down to the basement to change tracks lol?
However is there anything I have missed, anything else I can try? The best overall picture I have seen is itunes catalog in terms of the wonderful web pages it creates, but I don't see a way to get it to control my other mac.
I have been playing with this for a long time and would love a solution?
Cheers

Gary--
I have no understanding of Apache, could you offer any tips?
Sure. The first thing to do is to open up your System Preferences and go to the Sharing Pane. You'll see a choice there for "Personal Web Sharing". Activate it. It should take a couple of seconds to start up, then you'll see text down below that gives you the URLs for sites on your computer. Note the one without your user name on the end. You'll use that later. If Apache doesn't start, look at your Console application at the log "/var/log/httpd/error_log". If you can't figure out how to fix the error, post back here with the error.
Copy the acgi dispatcher application to a convenient place on your hard drive. I put mine in the Applications folder. Go ahead and start the application. The first time you run it, you'll be prompted to install some stuff. Just accept the defaults.
In the acgi dispatcher package, there's an AppleScript called 'itunes.acgi'. Copy that to the "/Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables" folder. There should also be a Unix Executable File called "nph-acgihelper" in there. There might be a couple of other files in there, too. You can safely ignore them.
You should be able to use a web browser to control iTunes. Remember the URL you made a note of above? Type it into your browser and add "cgi-bin/itunes.acgi" to the end. So it should look like: "http://remotemachine/cgi-bin/itunes.acgi".
acgi dispatcher should launch the AppleScript and that should, in turn, launch iTunes if it's not already running. Once the AppleScript and iTunes are running, browser control should be much quicker. I just leave acgi dispatcher, iTunes and the itunes.acgi AppleScript running all the time.
Good luck, and post back with any questions you might run across.
best,
charlie

  • Cover flow into album art and how to control iTunes from another app.

Hi all 2 areas of concen, one is coverflow/ album art and the other is itunes controller:
I have searched but cannot find the answer to this:
    1) I have some songs with album info already, and I used iTunes to get the album art for coverflow etc. ... some songs from the same album did not have the album category filled in, I go back and fill it in: now how do I get iTunes to recognize the album art so it shows up for the newly corrected songs?
    2) In coverflow, iTunes picked the wrong album cover, can I manually fix it/pick the right one?
    3) will coverflow only show album art for those albums recognized by iTunes, or will it use album art that I get from other sources and add manually? And what will show up in my ipod?
    and lastly
4), is there anyway to control iTunes without switching apps (if I am working in Word or safari and want to skip a song, etc)...is there an overlay controller?
    TIA

Copy the entire folder from one drive to the other, change the path that iTunes is using to access the library.

  • Using iTunes from another mac :)

    Hello,
is there any app (for mac) which allows me (or somebody) play/pause/skip/... music played on another mac? Something like the remote.app for iPhone.
I have mac, playing some music via Airport Express. When my girlfriend doesn't like the song, she has to tell me it and I have to skip it, so I would like to have some app, which allows my girlfriend to skip music on my mac via her mac.
We have Home Sharing enabled if that helps..
    Thanks

Thanks for idea Jolly, I know about screen sharing, but in my opinion, that is not so good solution for my problem. In the screen sharing solution, when I'm using computer and my girlfriend would want to change the song, she will disturb me from working. If she would use the remote app on iPhone, she will change the song and wouldn't have even notice it, which is good. So I'm looking for some similar app for mac, which will allows her to change the song without disturbing me.
Screen sharing is good, just in case I'm not working on my macbook but when I am working on it, it is not the optimal solution.

  • Sync itunes to another mac

I bought a new Mini Mac and now want to sync my Iphone with it.  It tells me my phone is already synced with my old computer.  How can i override this?

You can override this and sync along with losing all iTunes content on your iPhone and any photos on your iPhone that were transferred from another computer.
Have you transferred your iTunes library from your previous computer to your new computer along with all other important data from the previous computer such as photos, documents, etc.?

  • Sync-ing iTunes with another Mac &/or external hard drives?

Can u use iSync or another app 2 sync iTunes music between 2 different macs &/or an external HD? If so how? I have an eMac & an iBook & it's a pain in the a@@ 2 always have to transfer music files back & forth using an external HD or downloading 2xs. Does anyone else have this problem & agree?

No, you cannot - using either iSync, .Mac Sync or the Backup application available to .Mac registered users.
iSync synchronizes only Calendars and Contacts, with mobile handsets and Palm handheld organizers or smartphones.
.Mac Sync synchronizes only Bookmarks, Calendars, Contacts, Keychains,
Mail Accounts and Mail Rules, Signatures and Smart Mailboxes with other Macintosh desktop and portable computers through .Mac, and with the .Mac servers themselves.
Backup will back up and restore your iTunes library to and from .Mac, external hard drives or removable media, but will not synchronize your library.
You are really asking the question in the wrong forum. You should consider posting your message in of the subcategories of the iTunes forum, here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149
You could use an application like ChronoSync to synchronize your libraries, but you are liable to get the best advice about iTunes synchronization in the iTunes discussion areas. More information about ChronoSync is available here:

  • Audio cd burn from 11.1 not playing on old version of iTunes on another MAC. error message was cd created on newer version of iTunes.  If the disk was a audio cd it should not matter the iTunes version.

The error message was cd created on newer version of iTunes.  If the disk was a audio cd it should not matter the iTunes version. I converted all songs on playlist to MP3 and then selected burn playlist and checked audio cd. This worked in itunes 11.0.5. Also itunes 11.1 will not accept the second disk on a cd audio burn. It just keeps telling me to insert a blank disk, no matter how many blank disks are inserted

I think that the operating system is 10.4.11 and iTunes isn't responding to this operating system. I cannot upgrade the operating system to a version any later than what it is as I think it would then go to Tiger.
10.4 is Tiger, and 10.4.11 supports the latest version of iTunes and QuickTime. So either the system isn't at 10.4.11 - your original post said 10.4.1 - or there's something wrong with the system in which case earlier versions of iTunes/QuickTime might well also fail to install.
Please confirm the version of Mac OS X that really is on the system and we'll go from there.

  • Can I Remote Control or Shadow another Mac's desktop over the internet?

    If so, how?
I am our families tech support for all technology needs. We dumped our home PC a year ago for a Mac. Told the fam that my support skills are aging and they'd have to switch to a mac for continued support
Yikes, the sister is going to take the dive this week. I will for sure need to help her out. Is there a way to remotely support her with native Apple tools?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thx,
    Brent

Ok, mom got a mac last night. I read up on the screen sharing. This looks like it's geared to screen sharing on the local network. When I shared my mac out, it gave me a 192.168 address. This is a private, NAT'd address so this won't be routable.
I hope I'm missing something really easy... Any easier way to do this?

  • How do i uninstall itunes from my mac?

I have a MacBook Air that I received from work. It used to be used by another colleague and has their iTunes installed. I uninstalled iTunes by dragging the application to the trash and downloaded and installed the newest version today. I was not prompted to login and when I launch the program, it brings in the existing iTunes library from the other user.
How do I start over and bring my iTunes account onto this computer?
I went into the activity monitor and made sure to delete iTunes before the uninstall/install but can't seem to figure out what to do next.
    Thanks,
    Anne

You only dragged the app to the trash. There is no need to remove the app. There are associated files in the Users>Accounts>Music>iTunes folder that also need to be deleted.
If you have iTunes on another Mac then network the 2 Macs together and drag your iTunes folder into the Music folder on the receiving Mac.
Or if you have an ext HD then move your iTunes folder to the ext HD -  once the transfer is completed then plug in the ext HD to the MacBook Air and drag the iTunes folder over.

  • Remote Control another Mac?

I've tried to read up on this but couldn't quite grasp how to set it up properly, if anyone could offer any help?
I would like to use a Mac to control another Mac via the internet - i.e. by remote means.
The purpose is to demonstrate how to do something to another person, for instance, by moving the mouse on their screen to load iTunes or something similar - to show how to do simple procedures.

  • How can I transfer my iTunes library from one Mac to another Mac?

I have an old Mac book and purchased an air.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):

Syncing to a new computer should give you the opportunity to replace the exisiting contents with the new.

  • How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network?

How do I control my mac from another mac not in the same network? Thanks

You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
