Controling stroke in layer style

Hi,
How do i control the color and opacity of the stroke in layer styles?
I am using Photoshop cs3 extended, seems like i have not choice but red color and 100% opaque!
Can i change it?
Thank you

Hi,
Double click the layer in layer palette to open layer style window.
Now select the stroke tab by clicking on stroke at bottom of side option.
Refer the attached shot for the other settings.
Click over the color to open the color window, select the color.
Move the opacity slider to change the opacity.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,

  • New stroke options for the layer style "Stroke"

    Hi,
The new stroke options are fantastic where you can edit gaps, align and corners. And I love the ability to add layer styles to groups which makes it much easier to work with separate parts in a group that should be treated as a common object.
BUT! Why haven't you updated the stroke (layer style) options to include these new awesome stroke features? I would love to be able to make dashed strokes as a layer style that can be applied to groups, and I don't see why this should be excluded as an option.
Thanks for an otherwise great application!

Note: A shape layer stroke is a vector-based stroke and is applied only to shape layers. This is very different from the layer syle stroke.
You can control the settings for this stroke in the options bar for the vector tools (Shape, Pen, Path Selection, Direct Selection). This stroke is an attribute of the shape layer and will not cause the fx icon to display on the layer in the Layers panel.
A layer style stroke is a pixel-based stroke and can be applied to any layer that accepts layer styles (including shape layers). The settings for this stroke are controlled via the Layer Styles dialog.

  • Layer style stroke for open paths

I would like to be able to apply something like the Layer Style Stroke to open Paths non-destructively (so »Stroke path with brush« does not meet my, well, »needs« might be to strong a word).
Currently using a Path as a Vector Mask for a Solid Color Layer and applying Stroke to that causes open Paths to appear closed.

  • Ps CS6 Layer Style Stroke aliasing problem

    Ps CS6 (13.0)
    OS X 10.6.8
There seems to be a problem with aliasing of Layer Style Stroke.
The attached images show the result of the three Position options for the stroke. The pixels to which the Layer Style Stroke was applied were created by stroking a path with a white 72 px hard brush onto an empty layer over white Background.
    Layer Style>Stroke>Structure>Position: Outside
Outer edge of the stroke is poorly aliased.
    Layer Style>Stroke>Structure>Position: Inside
Inner edge of the stroke is poorly aliased and has intermittent artefacts.
    Layer Style>Stroke>Structure>Position: Center
    Outer edge is poorly aliased
Inner edge is poorly aliased and has intermittent artefacts.

Just fiddlin' around with Outer Glow because it has much more control, and I found a way to make a smoothly anti-aliased "outer stroke-like" effect...  Compare the quality of the Stroke against Outer Glow here...

  • Layer Styles / Strokes causing lag 64bit PS

    Hi There,
I'm a comic artist using Photoshop CC (64 bit, Version: 14.2.1) on a Windows 8.1 machine, with a 4th Gen i7, Nvidia 750M 2GB GFX card and 16Gb RAM. 'Use Graphics Processor' is set to Advanced and Memory Usage is set to 10348Mb (71%).
I'm running a dual screen setup with a Wacom Cintiq 21UX hooked up via HDMI to my Dell XPS 2720.
I typically work on an A4 size document at 400dpi.
The problem I'm having is with tremendous lag when using the transform tool to scale things up and down and when using the standard brush tool for comic art linework.
I have a group of layers with all my speech bubbles and text in. With each white speech bubble on a seperate with a Layer Style  / Stroke of 5 pixels around each one.
If I hide all of the speech bubbles (But not the text) then scaling using the Transform tool is nice and smooth and 100% lag free, as it should be on my spec machine.
If I disable Graphics Processor Settings, or scale them down to Normal or Basic the problem is exactly the same.
If I use the 32 bit version of Phtooshop CC scaling and brush storkes are lag free even with the speech bubble layers visible.
I've updated my system bios and GFX card drivers to the latest Dell release.
It's an annoying technical hiccup that I've found a workaround for but I would like and expect to be able to use basic tools like Transform and the Brush without lag, with all layers visible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Thanks for replying to my thread.
After posting to a new thread here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6263746#6263746
Through my own roundabout way I got to this same conclusion.
So yes, you're completely right, it helps massively. If only you'd been around a few weeks ago.
    Thanks again.

  • Having problem with applying layer style "stroke" to group

    - Windows 8.1 / 64bit
    - i3-4150 / 4GB / Geforce GTX 750 TI
    - Photoshop CC 2014
    Hi!
I don't know why, but there is some problem that applying layer style "stroke" to group.
When i make a group with some layer and apply to group a layer style-stroke with inside option,
the strokes looks like grid are generated inside.
Why i said that stroke cross to ㅎrid, because it looks like grid if i make that group bigger.
(that black square is 'Rectangle 1' layer. Just resizing bigger than before)
Does anyone have same problem with me?
    Please, I need your help..

    pillfish wrote:
I am having the same problem. it happens every time in cc and cc 2014. I am back using cs6. Which seems to run better on the whole.
That's interesting. And this is happening with CC and CC 2014?  Do you have all the updates for the Photoshop CC versions?
I've just tried to duplicate it without success, (windows 7, GTX570) so I wonder if there is a condition that triggers it?  Unfortunately, with this being such an old thread, the only person still around is R Kelly.
OK, I just thought to try it on my Cintiq Companion 2, which has Windows 8.1 and Intel 5100, and the bug occurred. I actually got as far as firing up my Win 8.1 laptop before remembering that I had to sign out of CC to put it on my Cintiq, so I only have CS6 on it.
Anyway....  looks like the bug is still there.  Are you using Win 8.1?

  • Layer Style Stroke Pixel Bug?

I am finding at random times that when I draw a rectangle with rectangle tool and then use layer style to apply a 1 pixel border, the border sometimes have a fade on either side of the that 1 pixel and it becomes 2 pixel.  It doesn't appear on all four sides, just randomly left, right, top, bottom...
To better illustrate the problem, i have attached an image and it's zoomed in to show the problem...You see how left and bottom is 1 pixel but not top and right side?  This is strange and never happened in CS4...I am using CS5 by the way...Anyone experienced this?

Pixels are the building blocks of raster images but you can put vectors anywhere, even at half pixel increments. So what happens when you tell Photoshop to make a 1 pixel stroke in such a way that it shows 25% in one pixel and 75% in the one next to it? You cannot fill half pixels so it has to either resize your vector so that it snaps to the pixel grid or, and this is what Photoshop does, add anti-aliassing which makes the 25% selected pixel 25% gray and the 75% selected pixel 75% gray (if the stroke was black).

  • Blend modes in "stroke"-layer styles not working ?

Hi. Anybody else got problems with the the blend modes in the "stroke" layer style, or am I doing something wrong?
right click on layer > blending options > stroke > blend mode
    (position=inside)
I want to use "fill type"="gradient", but the blend modes do not even work with "fill type"=color. For both fill modes, the stroke does not let any pixels of the layer shine through, no matter what blend mode I choose.
I often use blend modes, for example "darken", etc. I know how they work, but somehow for the stroke layer style it seems not to work at all.
I know, it's pretty basic, but I have spent several hours on that and simply don't succeed. Thanks for any help.

As there's only a single sentence refering to the stroke layer style in the CS3 manual, I'd also be thankful for an Adobe comment, clarifying whether this is a bug or not and if it will be improved.
Just to depict the current behaviour in a more graphic way:

I'd suggest to add a checkbox "knockout", which would let the user choose between the two results.

  • Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working In Layer Style / Blending Options Dialogue Box (Mac OS 10.6.8)

In the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, my custom Keyboard Shortcuts to zoom in and out of the image is no longer working. Cmd+opt+shift+1 acts as cmd+1 (jumps to Drop Shadow), and cmd+opt+shift+0 acts as cmd+0 (jumps to Stroke). Outside of this box the commands seem to be working fine.
Example 1: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+1.
Result 1: The dialogue box shift focus to the Drop Shadow Options instead of the image zooming in to 100%.
Expected Result 1: The image should zoom to 100%.
Example 2: Create a new RGB document, cmd+j the background layer, double-click this layer to open the Layer Style / Blending Options dialogue box, mash Cmd+opt+shift+0.
Result 2: The dialogue box shift focus to the Stroke Options instead of the image zooming to “Fit on Screen”.
Expected Result 2: The image should zoom to “Fit on Screen”.
This same thing happened in the CS5 Beta, and it was quickly fixed, so I hope this is not a complicated issue.
Thanks, and keep up the wonderful work!

  • Get layer style parameters?

How is it possible to set and get layer style parameters? For example read out stroke size, shadow distance, etc...

In case you're still interested about getting and setting layer styles parameters, I've just released a new module jamStyles of my open-source JSON Action Manager scripting library, which provides full support for blending options and layer effects using a fully-documented, simplified JSON object format.

            var layerEffectsObj = layerStyleObj["layerEffects"];

                var dropShadowObj = layerEffectsObj["dropShadow"];
                alert ("Drop shadow distance: " + dropShadowObj["distance"]);
Actually, if you know for sure that the current layer you're working on has layer effects, including a drop shadow effect, the code can be as short as:
    var layerStyleObj = jamStyles.getLayerStyle ();
    alert ("Drop shadow distance: " + layerStyleObj["layerEffects"]["dropShadow"]["distance"]);
Or, even shorter, using dot notation:
    alert ("Drop shadow distance: " + jamStyles.getLayerStyle ().layerEffects.dropShadow.distance);

  • Layer Styles Not Saving for Use on Other Computers

I've been trying over and over for the last 6 hours to get the layer styles I save in my custom pallet to work on other computers. I mean, I have a bunch of pallets from other sources and somehow they achieved a way of being able to save theirs, now why can't I do it on mine?
So, here's the story of what I've done. I have a Text layer, I've added a list of FX to it via the Layer Styles menu. Now I save the document. I open up a new document and copy/paste the FX onto a new Text layer in another document window. It works great.
Then, I save the layer styles for use later, but no. When I do everything exactly the same way, my Layer Style that I saved has lost all it coordinates of shadows and stroke widths, bevels, you name it, it's screwed up. Now I've tried this so far on CS4 and CS5, 3 different computers. All 3 computers have different settings for how Photoshop is set up, so I know it's NOT my settings alone. Though, it keeps the colors and custom gradients how they are, everything is bonkers.
I'm ready to stop trusting in Photoshop to be there for me when I need it...or punch a hole in the wall. Whichever comes first.
I need help for this as soon as possible, for I have an assignment I need this for.

Seems to me you left out the most critical piece of information, that is, HOW did you save the layer style for later use ?
You might read this tutorial to see if you did it correctly.

  • Retaining layer styles in a text layer merge down

I created some text and added layer styles to it.  However when I merge the text, first rasterizing then merge down, I lose the layer styles.  The text goes to its original color and no shadow, no stroke, bevels or anything else.

If you view the image at 100% view (actual pixels) before rasterizing and merging, does that make a difference?

  • Layer Style Window Opening But Not Visable

I just began having problems with Photoshop today.
I wanted to apply Blending Options to a layer. The Layer Style window opened but it was nowhere to be found! Because I could not access this window to either perform a task or close it, I had to Control/Alt/Delete because nothing else in the program would work. Obviously, it was waiting for a response to the window but as I couldn't see it, I couldn't access it.
I've never had this problem before and I've just spent four hours trying to find the problem, including messing with screen resolutions and monitor designations (I use a laptop with a flat screen as #2 monitor).
    Can someone please help me!!
Thanks, in advance, for your advice.

I just tried (as a last resort) changing one of my screen resolutions from 800 x 600 (so I don't have to squint) to 1280 x 800 and there was the edge of the window! - way off to the right. I just dragged it back into the middle of my Photoshop screen on my other monitor and it hasn't left me since.
I knew the silly window was open somewhere Who'd a thought it would be hiding way off screen!
Thanks for your tips. I'll keep those short cuts in mind.
    Cheers!

  • LAYER STYLES NOT RENDERING

hi! :) i'm using after effects cs3 on a quadecore pc, 2gb RAM. my output is in quicktime .mov. layer styles that i've added doesn't come out in my rendered project like drop shadow or stroke. none of my layers are in 3D so i don't know what i may or may not be doing right in my render settings or project switches. help?

Well, depending on your output module templates and render settings, OpenGL may be enabled by default for some of them. You can easily change that by going in the menu and choosing Edit --> Templates --> Render Settings (the setting is a checkbox called "Render using OpenGL").

  • Layer Style - Zoom In Issue

I have a jpg image in AE CS3 - I used a layer style - stroke of about 10 pixels to make it look like it had a white border.
When I put the image into 3d space and zoom move it further into z space, the stroke gets very big - as I zoom in the stroke gets smaller.
How can I make the stroke appear to stay the same size? I'm zooming in and out with a camera.
    Thanks!

I've found a solution for this...I put my jpeg into a pre-composition and moved all of it's attributes to the new composition. The stroke now stays in place.
