Controller Learning & Key Commands

Hello,
I have a M-Audio Keystation Pro 88. I have 2 Audio Instruments inserted on Audio Instrument tracks 1 & 2. Under Controller Assignments I have assigned a separate faders on my keyboard to separate Audio Instrument tracks 1 & 2. to control the volume of each fader. each is on a seperate midi channel also. But when I select both tracks, both faders move at the same time? How can have them move separately (each channel being a separate thing & seperate midi channel? Also is there a way to reset you key Commands to the default in Logic Pro 7 without re-installing? Thanks.

Here's something that works well:
Move the fader on Audio Instrument 1 (I do this from the Mixer page, so you can see what's happening).
Then go to LogicPro-Preferences-Control Surfaces-LearnAssignmentsFor"whatever control you just moved, in this case Volume" (I have this set to Command-L in the shortcuts (it's the only one with the word "learn" if you're trying to find it)).
Move the first fader on your Keystation. Change the Track from Selected (will change the volume on the selected channel) to the other radio button, and type in the channel number (I think it's counting from left to right in the mixer window).
Now turn off the Learn (bottom right) (Not sure how essential this is, but I found it a bit buggy if I didn't).
This feature works for all controlable features in Logic, from volumes to synth parameters.
Oh, and you can Initialise all key commands from the options menu in the Key commands window, so you don't have to reash your preferences.
Late for work! Gotta go, but hope that helps.

  • Learning the key commands and icons

    I see this...
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=8%26sec tion=4%26tasks=true
but is there some help with learning what the strange looking icons mean in the key commands window?
Is there a picture legend somewhere?

    Thanks redlogic - perfect!
Now I used to have/use something like 'power keys' or something like that....
that was for extended keys but now I'd like to use something for MBP laptop keyboard...
Is there any kind of cool "laptop key standard" that people use that I can start with and adapt?

  • Need key commands list - complete

can someone do me a favor and email me the clipboard output of the comprehensive key command list? i'm not in a position to do this myself right at the moment. if someone chimes up, i'll reply with the email address to send it to. no formating or anything is necessary.
also, for those that use key commands a lot and have some complex customization, what is your opinion on its reliability? my questioning is due to the possible utilization of a remote session of logic, receiving custom MIDI sysex commands to basically remote control functionality via MIDI. (i will be sending commands via TCP, but there will be a local server sending MIDI to the host machine) do key commands ever not execute? if you send a rapid sequence of key commands, do they execute in a predictable fashion? etc...

Why do you need to use Sysex commands? They're so much more complicated to program and keep track of...
In terms of reliability, sometimes I find that key commands "go bad". This is almost always a case of "key label" commands going bad and to fix the problem they need to be re-programmed as "key position". That's the only buggy behavior re key commands, aside from the bugs in the key command window itself. But that's another story. Here's the list:

  • What is the new key command to re-record a track- and delete the old one?

It used to be the - (minus) button on logic pro 7. I haven't been able to find it in the new one. or in the pdf manual. Anybody know of hand?
    thank you

Open the Key Command window. Choose any command. Hit the learn button and type in the command. A message will appear telling you what the command is already assigned to. Then you can change it.

  • Can't assign personal key commands

    Hello,
I recently had to reinstall Logic Pro 9 and neglected to backup/save my personal key commands.
In reentering these commands I'm having a problem with one specific personal key command for Solo Off For All that Logic won't accept. I have gone into the Logic Preference>Key Commands, scrolled down to Solo Off For All clicked on the Learn By Key Label and entered my command which is the TAB key followed by the letter 's'. The 's' gets entered but nothing else. Before doing the delete and reinstall of Logic Pro this command had been working fine for me.
    Thanks and Best to All
    Lautarese

    Hi Bill,
What you say makes sense. However I'm mystified as to why it worked for me before reinstalling Logic Pro from the Apps Store.
I picked the TAB key because all the other modifiers seem to be used for default Key Commands that I'd rather not replace.
    Thanks Mate.
    Best,
    Jason

  • Advice needed on Key Commands presets in Logic

Hi, just upgraded to Snow Leopard and Logic 9 and very happy. Now I'm planning to work more with key commands. While watching many Logic 9 tutorial video's on youtube etc. I find different Logic users seem to work with different (default) key commands. For example: on http://www.youtube.com/user/groove3Inc#p/search/2/BSE3VdlkZJM he's using Ctrl * for 'Capture as recording', while for me the default command is Ctrl Alt Cmd R
    Now my question is:
    1. What is the default / standard key command preset in Logic
    2. Which Key Command preset in Logic would be best to use (also considering that on a different location I sometimes work with Protools)
    3. Which Key Command preset in Logic would be best to use considering the many tutorials I find on the web
Or any other advice / tips on key commands...
    Thanks!

You can easily create your own set of key commands, according to your own needs. I mean, you still can learn some built-in key commands, but you can also change them as you please. Probably, in your case it might make sense to have the same set of key commands for both Logic and Pro Tools, to make life easier.

  • Key command for ARRANGE/track/sort tracks

Need to automate.  Arrange/tracks/ sort tracks...  Not supported in logic key commands.  3rd party macro recorder needed.  Any suggestions?  AppleScript?

The Logic-style approach to faders is a strange one. In ProTools you have sliders which are much easier to move in increments. You can also enter the volumes by typing in a number, allowing very precise adjustment. Apple probably opted for the tiny blue knobs so they would take up less space in the track window. I do like being able to see many tracks at once so this is probably a good decision.
Heck, I have learned to live with it. The more I use Garageband the more I realize just how cool an app it is. Apple has given a near-pro level app to us for next nothing. In addition, I am using Jampacks 4, which opens a whole new world. The sounds are stunning and mixed in a way that requires very little eq to get your mix to sound fantastic. In my last mix all I did was balance the sound levels and add some reverb via the Ambience plugin to push some sounds to the back and the mix was done. Wow!

  • Strange Key Commands Issue - Please Help

I understand how to make/delete and export key commands.
I made a key command preference that I like that doesn't involve the screen set key commands ... herein lies the issue.
I delete the commands (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) that are assigned to screen sets because I want to use them for other things. I save the preset. If I keep logic open everything is hunky dory, but if I close logic and re-open it the screen set key commands are suddenly part of my preset again.
    I'm running Logic 8 btw.
I thought Logic might automatically be initializing it's key commands from their provided key commands list, but after removing them I found that was not the case.
I also tried deleting my com.apple.logic.pro.plist file but still the screen set key commands keep showing up.
Does anyone know a way to keep Logic from adding them back into the key commands everytime I start it up?

    YESSSSSS.
    thanks again for your help!
LOL, OK, you never mentioned the keypad... I just assumed you were after the top row number keys... but those on the numpad are indeed available (or set in limestone). Good persistance! And thanks for reporting your solution.

  • Custom Key Command w/o using a Modifier Key?

There are several key commands that I wish to assign (actually just want to change) in LP8. But the ones I want to change are all using modifier keys, so this requires two keys. And the secondary modifier key area, the ones you check with a check-mark box (i.e. shift, control option, command)is grayed out, so it cannot be changed. Is there any way around this?
For example: I want to re-assign one of the factory key-commands for "Go to selection start", to just be the return key. The factory key-command for this function, is hold shift & return.

You should be able to select the key command, enable learn by key label, hit delete key to clear. Then type key choice.

  • Logic crashes when using the "Close Project without Saving" key command

The "Close Project without Saving" key command does not work in LP8. When I try to use it, Logic crashes. This is reproducible on my system. Can anyone try and confirm this?

For me this shortcut is quite important on stage when I have to switch songs as fast as possible. It also is foolproof because on stage I never want to save with all the controller changes I did during a performance.
Just hit the key command, load the next song, done.

  • Desktop vs laptop key commands.

I just recently picked up a 15" i5 MBP which is the first laptop I've ever used for audio.
Key commands for a full key board with numeric pad are so ingrained in my mind that I'm hesitant to "learn" variations for the laptop. Believe me, I'm not complaining about having to excute for few extra mouse pad clicks.
How are other folks juggling desktop vs laptop key strokes?
I suppose I could get a full size wireless keyboard (as the MBP USB ports are already spoken for).
    Input appreciated.
    Cheers.

I played around with the key board preferences (US with numeric pad vs just plain US)
I once created a list of the differences between those two presets. Here it is. I realize it's tough to read on this web page, but that's because this forum won't let me use html table tags. But if you paste the text into a spreadsheet or word processor, it will instantly format as a table (because tabs are embedded) and be easily readable.
The first column is the US with numeric keypad, and the second column is the plain US. Any commands not on this list are the same in both presets.
Anyone confused by any of those symbols can find an illustrated guide here or here.

  • Key Command Help!!

I just did a complete erase and install of my system (it was most definitely in need) and I am now having an issue when trying to rebuild my set of key commands. I hadn't taken a ton of time customizing a lot of them so I am just starting from scratch and remembering what I like to use a lot. One of the commands that I cannot live without is using the [ and ] keys to go to the previous and next plug-in settings. But I am having an issue entering the ] into the key command screen. Everytime I enter it, I get -93. I've tried changing the settings to "learn by key label" and "learn by position" and I get the same thing. It wouldn't bother me if it was actually right, but it isn't. In fact, anything I enter for that key command shows up wrong. Entering the letter V shows up as F6!! Is there a place where the key commands preference file is that I can trash and start again without losing all of my other preference settings?

Your Key Commands are stored with your preferences, in ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro
You could move that file onto your destop, rebuild your key command, then move the new prefs onto your destop, move the old one back to the correct location and import the "new" Key commands from the one on your destktop.
However, I wouldn't worry about your losing your Global preferences, those are easy to reset....

  • MIDI Key Command

Here's a weird one: I am trying to set up two key commands froma MIDI controller. #1 is "Play song from beginning" and #2 is "Go to Next Song". I have a sustain pedal and a hold pedal. Whgen I assign either to "Play song..." they work fine, but neither will "Go to next...". If I use a key on the computer the function works fine. Any thoughts?
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Logic Pro 7.1

    Alex,
I couldn't get the "Select Next Song" to work either via MIDI. Tried assigning notes and controllers in an attempt to get it to work, but no dice.
And the manual seems mute on this subject, which is always a big help (not).
Look on p. 255 of the manual and read up on Meta Events for goto song. Maybe there's a workound in that function.

  • LPX Key Commands acting weird???

I have 2 problems with Key Commands window.
1.-I have opened the KeyCommands window and it opens up at the top of my screen.
The top of the Key Commands window is under the task bar and I can not pull it down.
2.- My LPX Key Commands started to act weird.
Space bar does not work for play/pause.
It creates a small MIDI region instead.
X does not show the mixer and any other thing does not really work.
It worked at the beginning when I firs installed it.
    Could this be a bug?
If I choose Logic 9 set the everything works like the LP9 and it is fine.
But, I wanted to learn the new set and I cannot use it.
    Any ideas?

    hi
Do you have installed another language for typing?
If so check that your keyboard is in US typing
Logic respond strange when another language is active
    hope it helps

  • PRINTING KEY COMMANDS/ EDITING VOCALS/LOGIC PRO 7 compared with Logic 8

    Dear all,
q1: i am trying to print the key commands. A way to do this is by Copy Key Commands in the Options pull down menu and then paste it onto a text editor (e.g word). My problem is, when I paste it onto word the names of the commands appear but the actual key commands on the right do not, and some symbols appear on the left of the names where they should not. Is there a simple way to print the key commands. My word processor is a 2004 word version and my Logic Pro 7 about a year old.
q2: I am recording a multitude of vocals. Which window would you find most practical for quick and effective editing? the arrange window or going into each region by double click and trim detail there? I somehow seem to prefer the arrange but would welcome any suggestions.
q3: I feel much more comfortable using Logic Pro 7 as Logic 8 does not advance my workflow yet. Am I alone in thinking in these terms. Would you agree on the possibility of users sticking at 7 for quite some time, maybe a year or two before they switch to 8 if at all. I d be very interested to hear anyones thoughts on this
Thank you all for reading. if you can spare a thought ot two I d be so thankful.
    Nik

My experience is that I only learn a few key commands at a time.. ie really use them and remember them. Therefore go to the KC window and open up the commands where you want to concentrate your learning. Then take a Screenshot
(Command + Shift + 4 and draw a box) which appears as a Picture 1 on your desktop. Then just refer to that
many users ( me included) are still working in L7 with occasional experimental forays into L8
Those really on top of L8 have committed early on and really gone for it.. if you dont have a high new info tolerance or are not particularly software savvy.. stick with L7
