Controlling access (copying and Trashing)

We currently have our Studio database on the OS X Server (v.10.3) that allows our employees to access and enter & edit data simultaneously.
How can I ensure that an employee does not accidentally trash the folder they have access to that houses our database or copies the folder?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. I tried locking the folder, but then you cannot write to the database.

By 'program' I’m guessing you mean how would ACLs be applied?
In Tiger Server (10.4) you enable the volume with desired share points to use ACLs followed by a restart. Thereafter its a simple matter of using the relevant Access section in WorkGroup Manager and defining permissions from there. In Leopard Server (10.5) Apple moved File Sharing away from WorkGroup Manager and made it part of Server Admin. There is no need to enable ACLs this time as they are already enabled by default.

Problems copying and trashing files

OK - here's what I assume are two seperate issues, or they may be related. (I'm running 10.3.9 on an iBook G4 and attempting to move files to a USB external).
I have a DVD of jpg photos I was attempted to copy onto an external hard drive. About half of the 400 photos copied fine, then I got an error message midway through the copy saying something relating to at least one of the files being busy (I don't remember exactly, but I think it was the same as the error message I have below).
I have already dumped the DVD's contents into iPhoto, so I decided to do it the long way and search through iPhoto's library in the finder. I found some of the photos I wanted to copy, and when I attempt to copy them to the same directory as the DVD photos were copied to, I get this message:
The selected items cannot all be put into the same location, because at least one of them named "**.jpg" is busy.
I tried to copy individual files, and I get this for multiple files. In some cases, there was already a file with the same name in the target folder, so I trashed the file in the target folder, emptied the trash, tried the individual file again and still get the same message. No program is running with these files, and these aren't the files that were being copied when I got the first message.
I went back and looked at the target folder and saw all the files that hadn't been copied are in there with a size of 0 kb. When I try to trash these, I get this error:
Preparing move to "Trash"
Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving the items can cause problems with the application using them. Are you sure you want to move the items?
I can click continue, but I have to do it for every file and there's about 200 of them.
So two issues: any way to get past the "file is busy" error to copy the files from my iPhoto directory to the target folder on the external? Any way to trash the files without clicking continue 200 times? And is the problem with the target volume or my iBook where the iPhoto library is? (I initially assumed the problem was with the target external, but the files giving me the "busy" error are on the iBook and give the message even when there is no file of the same name on the external.)
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for the response, but it doesn't address the issue I'm having. (To be fair, the issue I'm having is sort of buried in my long initial post, since as is plain from my next post, I'm An Idiot).
At any rate, what I'm looking for is this: the files that weren't properly copied are now sitting in a folder in my external hard drive, along with the files that were properly copied.
There are about 200 files which are just filenames with a size of 0k. I can find all these fine by sorting the folder window by size.
However, whenever I drag them to the trash, an error message pops up telling me the file is in use by another application. I can click on continue, but I get an error message for every file I drag to the trash. I don't feel like clicking continue 200 times, although I suppose I could. I was wondering if there's a way to tell the Finder these files are not actually in use, both to save my mouse finger now and possibly in the future if this problem repeats itself.

How can I access copy and paste history in iphone 4, absent some app, if I have copied another block of text before pasting the first?

Is there ANY way to access the copy/paste history in iphone4 without an app? I have the latest verdsion of ios, and I'm using an iPhone 4... The issue arose when I copied a large, VERY large block of text, and then another before I pasted the huge one that took forever to hammer out and was unsaved by any other method, and now I really need it all back!!! Please help! Is there no "clipboard" or similar tool that remembers copied text history for a while, or am I SOL on this one? I can tell you this, as important as the lost words are to me, I don't think I could summon the energy or creativity to repeat it, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and possibly rewarded with cupcakes and affectionate (albeit digital) hugs. I'm currently using Linux Fedora system.
Doesn't matter. There's no standard way for D&D on Linux, no single API.
Every application has its own mechanism which may or may not be compatible with any other.
Gnome and KDE groups are doing some work to provide a common standard but as you know the Linux zealots are completely opposed to anyone telling them what to do (such as creating standards) and won't in general follow them.

Control key copy and paste, etc., not working

I have just purchased a T440S Thinkpad. I am alarmed that Ctl + C and Ctl + V do not work. Also, I cannot use the Control key in combination with + and - to zoom in and zoom out. The Control key in combination with the letter i does not italicize a blocked word. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Will Lenovo technicians be able to provide a fix for this serious problem? David

Is this the case for both CTRL keys (you have a CTRL key on each side of the space key) or is one of them working?
If the right CTRL key is working and the left CTRL key isn't, are you sure you didn't swap the Fn and CTRL key in BIOS?

Finder can't shut down because copy and trash still running

I was working in pictures, deleted and moved several . . . or tried to. After about 4 hours, the boxes for each show "Preparing to move to . . ." Set to stop an now below rolling bar it says "Stopping . . " How do I get rid of these functions so I can shut down my computer. Tried escaping, quit, manually shutting down - none work. HELP.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder, set the Processes drop down menu to All Processes, locate the Finder, select it and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar, then click on the Force Quit button.

"copy and paste" not working only offers "cut"

I have a client working on an 11" MacBook Air purchased early this year reporting that she cannot access copy and paste across applications:
"At the moment I can’t COPY anything in Word or indeed any other documents, including emails etc. Driving me mad. Only the CUT option comes up - and as I’m working against a deadline… "
And she also reports this issue with Apple Mail which seems to have lost its preference file settings:
"Also bloody Mail programme has now changed its layout and everything is bloody FIXED - so I can’t move it about the screen while I dig up another document I need to refer to. It wasn’t like this before… again very labour intensive and irritating. I have to use my online Google mail to get around this resistance… "
I have suggested that she uses Disk Utility to repair permissions on her Hard Disk and then restart in Safe Mode to see whether Copy and Paste is restored and also that Mail is back in order, through a corrupted Preference file may require resetting.
Any body else seen any of these symptoms or have any thoughts as to a cause and a possible solution. At the back of my mind is the thought that she may have been hit by a Trojan. I'm reminded of the strange symptoms experienced by clients using MS Office when the Flashback Trojan struck in 2012.
Any help appreciated.

I have found various other explanations – still following links discovered through DuckDuckGo – raising the possibility that other utilities may be interfering, such as Koteri for those switching between English and Japanese and perhaps the most likely explanation, that my client has accidentally engaged some element of the Accessibility controls.

If you have ever inadvertently engaged keyboard zoom you will know how odd the Mac feels with such changed behaviours in place. Perhaps my client did thunder on the option key 5 times in a moment of frustration and make the leap into a parallel universe where the reassurance of Copy and Paste does not apply.
I'll report back once I've investigated further.

Try just Opening the Word .doc from within Pages and see if that gets closer to what you want, then copy the chapter you want from the Pages version.

Man that is an ancient message.
The last time I saw that was using Mac clients connected to a Microsoft (Windows) Server running 'Services for Macintosh' which included the ability to act as an AppleShare compatible file server. Because Microsoft have a different security system for defining accounts which includes the 'domain' as well as username, the standard Mac AFP client did not know how to send that information.
Therefore Apple made it possible to installed a plugin in the form of a UAM or User Authentication Mechanism which added the ability to send this information to login to the fileserver.

However Microsoft have long discontinued 'Services for Macintosh' and now the only way for a Mac to connect to a standard Windows Server is via SMB not AFP. I don't believe this plugin is available to download anymore.

Cannot uninstall I tunes. In control panel add and remove programs it will not give me the option to remove any of the I tunes. In program files it tells me access denied to remove any of the related items. I have tried using the removal methods from i tu

My i tunes will not work at all. I have tried all the steps given to remove my I tunes player but in my control panel, add and remove programs it does not give me an option to remove any of the apple/ I tunes. I tried to go to program files and remove all the files but access is denied. This all started about 1 1/2 years ago and with every i tunes update i got more and more errors or problems until it stopped working. At one time i could remove and reinstall i tunes to try to fix it but now i cannot do anything. I believe one of the last was i could not open i tune because it was being used or was on another network, not 100% sure its been so long and frustrating I quit trying 6 months ago. Hopefully someones got some help !!!

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

OS X can natively read NTFS of Windows, but not write to it.
Windows can't read or write to HFS+ of OSX, and that's a good thing from a security standpoint.
Ideally if you share files between operating systems you should have a FAT/MSDOS formated USB key or hard drive. (exFAT external drive if any of your files are over 4GB in size) both these formats are universal for OS X or Windows.
If you install software into Windows and OS X to read each others formats, then you have to pay to update/upgrade it deal with headaches.
If you swtich between Windows and OS X a lot, don't need full hardware performance for Windows, you may consider installing virtual machine software like VMFusion or Parallels which can take a copy of your Windows in Bootcamp and place it into OS X as a file then run that copy of Windows in a window in OS X like so.
Advantage here is you run most of your light weight Windows programs like this at the same time as OS X.
Benefit is you can run just about any Windows or Linux version and OSX server editions (not client versions)
Bootcamp only allows Windows 7, that's it now.
You'll also be interested in two fre pieces of software, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone on macupdate.com.
CCC clones OS X partition and Winclone clones the Bootcamp partition. Valuable for you.

Copy control for dates and disable the input

I have the following problem: I'm trying to copy dates in a follow-up order from the source order (which works fine by implementing the CRM_COPY_BADY method DATES) and disable the input of the copied dates in the follow-up order (which doesn't work).
In the change-parameter CT_INPUT_FIELDS you can specify the fields which have to be copied and furthermore you can control the modifiability of the field in the follow-up order via the parameter CHANGEABLE (e.g. 'A' means field can not be changed). This technique is the same in all methods of the copy BADI.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for the dates. As I said already, the date is copied but can be changed by the user in the follow-up order.
Anybody an idea?

Actually, I have tried with copy requirement 2.However, it works for copying a different customer with the same sales area as original. Yes, I may need to ask developer to solve my solution. But I would like to keep it to be the last choice. I tried to search "How to copy document between inter-company businees"; but the I still not get what my custome's want. Copying and pasting rows in Table Control

I've a table control in my screen. TC is displaying data from database.
Modifications, Insertion and deletion of data are allowed in the TC which will in turn reflect to Database.
Now i want users to copy and paste the rows in the TC.
Can any one help me in this regard?

Place the cursor in forst field and press CNT+y now select the entair row by using your mouce and press CNT+C and paste the data in what ever position.
