Controlling aspect ratio within calendar

is there a way to put a photo into a calendar frame and retain the photo's exact aspect ratio? i find that some of my photos are being cropped by iPhoto to fit into the full page. if not, what is the aspect ratio of the full page?
also, how can i determine the aspect ratios of the frames with multiple pictures?

The default size I believe is 4:3 ratio. However if you Control-click on the photo you'll get a Contextual menu option "Fit Photo to Frame Size" that will do the trick. You'll get some white space at the top and bottom possibly but you'll have the entire photo in the frame.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

How do I control aspect ratio and pixel dimension in iMovie 10

When you created a new movie in iMovie 9 the program would ask if you wanted 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio and when you saved the movie it would ask about the size of the file and pixel dimensions. How do I controll these in iMovie 10?

I think they screwed up - but I have solved the problem by deleting it and reinstalling version 9.0.9 which you can get from the support at http://www.apple.com/uk/support/mac-apps/imovie/
Frankly I don't see the point of Theatre and I don't use iCloud so reverting back to a version that actually works seemed a good option!

Reverting to 1.0, controlling aspect ratio, coping with choices

'm relatively content now that I've downgraded to 1.0. Streaming is back to what Apple TV should be, and I don't really miss rentals (thanks, Netflix) or any of the other new Take 2 features much at all.
One problem, though.
The movies I'm encoding with the latest version of Handbrake are apparently optimized for performance on Apple TV Take 2, and therefore show with distorted aspect ratios when viewed on 1.0 software.
I personally don't see Apple addressing this issue any time soon, so the question is: keep ripping movies (that I own, of course, for backup purposes only) optimized for Take 2, or find some way to obtain an older version of Handbrake so I don't have to watch new releases with a horizontally challenged aspect ratio between now and when (if) this finally get sorted out?
And if the answer involves the latter, where can we find that earlier version of Handbrake?
I know from monitoring these forums vigilantly that there are many less-than-satisfied Apple TV enthusiasts pondering the same thing, so let's find a (hopefully temporary) solution that will allow us to maintain our domestic cinematic viewing habits as best we can.

I think the issue you are alluding too is that wider than 16:9 widescreeen aspect ratios are scaled vertically to fill the screen rather than playing with black bars above and below the feature.
You can still dl the version prior to the current one if that does the trick for you.
I think older versions may have gone.
I believe the project in question may be moving towards being a converter only.

Pixel Aspect Ratio within projects

I am trying to bring in an entire timeline of video(only :90) to another timeline. However each one has different sequence settings. The original one has settings like this:
Frame Size: 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i(16x9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Timebase: 29.97
Anamorphic 16x9 not checked
The one I am trying to lay into that timeline is:
Frame Size: 1440x1080 HD (1440x1080) (16x9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080)
Timebase: 29.97
Anamorphic 16x9 not checked
I tried to simply copy this last timeline and paste into the original sequence and it didn't match up. How can I sucessfully do this?

Here's the trick. Create a new sequence with the desired setting. Select the first clip in the old sequence and hit "f" This loads the clip in the viewer with the in and out. Edit into the new sequence. FCP should automatically adjust the clip to match the sequence pixel settings. Repeat for each clip in the original sequence.
There are otherways to do this, but this may be the simplest to explain. Try it and if you have problems, post back.

I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)

Aspect ratio issues with SD box and no help from Verizon

I just renewed my 2 year contract which included a free box but a billing screwup resulted in repeated charges for the box. A CS rep credited the account and said I had the wrong box and she would send out a new one.
i had a 7100 Motorola HD box. I have an older television set (that cannot control aspect ratio) and I have never had HD service but this was the box I was sent by Verizon as part of my contract. Why they felt it had to be changed I don't know, but ..... the box they sent was a 2500 SD box which does not give me an acceptable picture.
It's totally random. Some channels are 16:9. Some are overzoomed 4:3. The FIOS channel bar at the bottom is partially off the screen and the content is clipped around the edges. Commercials are totally random in size and appearance.
The # key on the remote does not work. There is no option in Settings to change the aspect ratio.
CS was ZERO help. They concluded that I had to either deal with the scattershot image sizes and clipped image content or go buy another television. SERIOUSLY VERIZON?
I couldn't get an answer as to why the box I was sent by Verizon as part of my original contract that provided a perfectly acceptable image had to be replaced with a box that doesn't provide squat. I have had Verizon service for approximately 7 years with this same television and this is the first time I've been given a box that can't produce an acceptable image and a remote that can't resize. So why now?
This smells like a bait and switch, or an attempt to get customers to pay for an upgraded box for a service they don't want just to get an acceptable picture. I live in an urban area and there is plenty of older equipment in these homes. So are customers like myself just being told even though you pay a significant amount of money for a Triple Play you are only getting 2 parts of the service?
I find it hard to believe there isn't some way to make the box or the remote change the image size. Can anyone help?

but yes, our 2500 sd box, basically the 4:3 standard non HD box broadcasts to fit a 4:3 TV.. now some channels will have the black bars on top and bottom to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio.. you'll notice this if you run the 2500 box on a flat screen.. if you have it in 16:9 ratio on a flat screen it looks stretched.. the only way to watch regularly is in 4:3 mode.. which basically has the image with bars on all sides.. or you can zoom it and lose a portion of the image.. but it's because the box thinks you're using a 4:3 sd tv so the boxes appear on top and bottom so it can still fit the wider image it's filmed in.. so with flat screens you need the HD box i guess.. unless there is something i'm missing but there isn't a setting that i can find to change how the box exports the image for a flat screen or 4:3. I know the HD boxes have an 'SD Override' option.. which i guess tells the box you're not using a 4:3 tv anymore.. but that option is not on the 2500 SD box.. believe me i looked.. but this is all in reverse for your issue anyhow as you're having trouble with the SD box on an SD TV... which yeah, if you run SD the quality of picture is not as good as the HD programming.. so please let us know what they say to do for you.

CUSTOM ASPECT RATIO SQUISHING IMAGE

I have a 720x486 clip that I'm cutting into a 300x250 sequence. Problem I'm finding is in both square & DV pixel aspect ratios, my image is being "squished" both horizontally and vertically.
Any ideas on how to keep my original D1 aspect ratios within a modified 300x250 sequence?

Is there no way to place a D1 clip into a custom aspect sequence without it modifiying the original clip?
As long as your Pixel Aspect ratio is correct, you should not see distortion. FCP will scale a clip when you drop it in, but it should not distort it.
In my experience, this works best if you start with an 8-bit sequence (aka 720x486) and then alter its Aspect Ratio - not its Pixel Aspect Ratio, though - from CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27) to Custom. Then alter your frame size to 300x250.
Of course, once you've placed your clips into the sequence, you'll need to remove the scaling (but it should not distort any of them).
I've had to do things in unique aspect ratios, and I've never had an issue so long as I've done it this way.

Aspect ratio control for VOD

I love that the IMG provides an aspect-ratio control (as previous Motorola boxes on Comcast didn't seem to do).
But, on mine at least, I can't use it when watching VOD. Is this by design, or is it a bug?
Because HBO is so overprotective about their VOD, I can only get their series in SD letterboxed, which produces a postage samp 4-black-sided picture on my screen.

I don't know if it is by design or not, but it does not work for me either, although I generally never watch anything but HD VOD so it really doesn't matter to me. But I did try it on an SD Starz VOD and sure enough it didn't affect the picture. I don't have HBO so I cannot test that.

Preserve aspect ratio of JPanel size within JApplet

Hi, currently, I have a JPanel component, which will be placed at the center of JApplet (This JApplet is BorderLayout).
I wish to preserve the aspect ratio of the JPanel to square (width equal to height) even when the JApplet size is changed.
I overriden the getPreferredSize, getMinimumSize and getMaximumSize of JPanel as follow:

IMovie iDVD Incorrect aspect ratio of movie within dvd

This query has previously been raised elsewhere in the forum but the proposed solution looks quite complex for an iMac novice like myself.
In summary the movie looks fine when previewed in iDVd however, when burned to disk and then played on my DVD player the sides of the movie have been cropped.
Is there a 'simple' solution to maintaining the original aspect ratio of the footage from iMovie to iDVD?
Is there any s/ware available?

Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!

Aspect Ratio settings -4:3 video doesn't look right on a 16:9 set

Hello- I'm importing old vhs tape via a Canopus 300 into Final Cut Studio then exporting through Quick Time Movie and burning a DVD in iDVD. The problem ocours when I view the DVD on my 16:9 set- video looks to be the wrong size....for example graphics that were within the frame boundaries on the original tape display off the corners of the screen when viewed on the DVD.
Here are my settings:
Final Cut:
Sequence preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Capture Preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Device Control - non controllable device
video Playback - Apple firewire ntsc 720x480
audio playback - default
In iDVD I have the project aspect ratio set to 4 : 3
Am I missing something somewhere to preserve the original 4:3 aspect to display properly on 16:9 sets?

Thanks Shane. Tried that on my set, was able to set to normal when viewing off-air picture, but when switching inputs to te dvd player the side bars are gone. Fiddled with the dvd player settings, set it for 4:3 output and I get a letterbox frame but at least the graphics are on screen. Looks like the stretch setting you spoke of.
Regarding Final Cut settings, in capture preset the setting DV NTSC 48 has a default of 3:2 aspect ratio. I see I can edit and change it to NTSC 4:3. Do you think it should be 4:3?

Match resolutions/aspect ratio of two different cameras

I shot a short video with an iPad 3 and a Sony DCR-DVD-403 NTSC.
The video from the iPad is fuller and wider than the footage I shot with the Sony Cam.
1. I just need them to be the same size as I edit. So that I can produce this project with all video the same size.
2. I would also like to know if I can capture the footage from the miniDVD straight into Premiere Pro without having to use a third party converter to rip and convert. Is this possible, if so, then I am hoping I get the option to match the video aspect ratio from the discs with the iPad footage.
I can't find the answer to these questions anywhere.

You have three issues to deal with -
1) Sony footage is Standard Definition, iPad is HD
2) Sony is 4:3, iPad is 16:9 widescreen
3) iPad clips are 30.0 frames per second, while the standard for video is 29.97 frames actually, like the Sony clips are.
If both were widescreen, this would be so much simpler....
Do you need to deliver in HD, or will SD be ok? Because if you blow up the SD to HD, it will look very soft next to the HD video. Better to bring the HD down to SD specs. If they were both 16:9, you'd be all set!
However, you need to decide if you want to crop the iPad footage to 4:3, or make the 4:3 clips into 16:9, either way you lose part of the image. Or you could mix them as is, but you will have either letterboxing or pillarboxing on just ONE of the clips and that will not look good when switching between the two cameras.
So...if you want to deliver as 16:9 SD, you could do this - create a new DV Widescreen sequence and add your clips. To get rid of the black side bars (pillarboxing) on the SD clips, use the Adobe Motion control in Effects panel to Scale the clip up until it fills the screen. You then may also need to adjust the clip up or down within the frame so as to not cut off heads, keep subject framed, using Position settings for X and Y. That is the downside to making 4:3 into 16:9, you lose some of the image. For the iPad clip, right-click and select "Scale to Frame Size" and it will fill the widescreen just fine.
If you want to deliver 4:3 SD, then choose an NTSC DV preset, which will be 4:3 and suitable to the Sony clips. Then bring in the iPad clips and Scale down to fit using Motion effect, keeping in mind the SIDES of the video will be clipped off. Again, you can use the Position settings in Motion to move the frame left or right to keep the subject framed.
As for frame rate issue, I believe that Adobe will handle that for you when putting the 30fps clip into the 29.97 sequence, should be ok but may result in a little weirdness in smoothness of motion, not sure. I don't know if you'll run into audio sync issues between the two though??

The frames for all iPhoto photo books are 4:3 - you can right click on a photo (control click) and choose fit to frame or you can click on it and a slider appears above the photo frame that lets you adjust the size of the photo and a hand appears that you can select and move the photo within the frame
You can use a non 4:3 photo but have to either fit to frame of enlarge (exxentially cropping) to fill

Quicktime x displaying incorrect aspect ratio

Hi,
I have a strange display issue with QT X which is occurring on both my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro.
Quicktime X is displaying all movies in a squashed aspect ratio. For example a 640x360 movie is displayed (actual size setting) as 640x340. The same movie displays correctly in QT 7 Pro. The same movie also displays in the correct aspect ratio in iTunes.
What QT X appears to be doing is displaying the images squashed by 20 pixels. for instance a 1920x1080 actually displays as 1920x1060. The image is not trimmed just squashed into a frame that is 20 pixels too short. It happens with all movies including ones downloaded from Apple.
any ideas anyone?

I'm not and I routinely convert and proof 4 to 12 files a day as part of my processing activities. In addition, neither test files download from the trailers area nor files sent me for examination seem to display this aberration.
I wonder if it is something to do with the transport commands moving from underneath the frame to within the picture area.
Not sure what you are referring to here. If referring to the controls which are visible when the cursor is hovering above the player window, they have nothing to do with changes in the display dimensions as detailed by the "Inspector" window on a properly functioning system.

Have explained the basic mechanism governing the normal display of files played in the local players. Basically, either the problem is in the file itself or the problem is in the manner in which good files might be playing in a corrupted or software conflicted player. Comparing playback under different user accounts or on different systems might reveal if the problem is local to your account and/or system. If you don't have a secondary system available locally, posting a test file for comparison by others might determine the problem source.

Aspect Ratio Doesn't Match Book

Hello.
I am trying to put a photo into a book that was edited by someone else. He cropped the photo at an aspect ratio that looks similar to Wide Screen TV format. (Sorry, I can't tell exactly what it is.)
I want to put the photo on an iPhoto book page, but the photo is too wide for the page and it crops the sides off. Is there a way to force iPhoto to fit the photo width and leave blank space at the top and bottom of the photo?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Control-click on the photo in the frame and select the Fit Photo to Frame Size option. That should fit the long dimension and leave the height with some "white" space on top and bottom. But all should display.
