Controlling brush darkness with intuos5 pen pressure?

I just bought a pressure sensitve tablet (wacom intuos5 medium).
I want to set it up so I can practice "charcoal drawing" in photoshop without the mess. Specifically, I want the pressure to control the darkness of the brush tool, from very faint to completely black.
So, in the brushes window, I enabled "other dynamics" and set the flow control to pen pressure. It works but not very well. It's hard to draw a faint line, and faint lines appear to be made up of discrete circles.
I also try linking the opacity to the pen pressure, and set flow to 100%. This work better for faint lines, but I'm unable to draw a completely black line. It seems the opacity maxed out at about 40%. I don't want to apply too much pressure lest I break the tablet.
Is there a better way to set this up?

To avoid the visible circles you may have to reduce the Spacing (and subsequently maybe reduce the overall Flow).
Could you post screenshots of your settings and the resulting strokes (ideally applied tio a Path with »Simulate Pressure« checked, so allow for comparrison)?

  • Does Lightroom's brush tool support Wacom Pen Pressure?

Does Lightroom brush tool support true "pen pressure" from the Wacom Intuos tablets?  According to Weston Maggio and Joe Sliger of Wacom (in numerous Webinars), "Pen pressure has been supported since Lightroom version 2."  I have used Lightroom's brush tool extensively and find no difference between the Pen and the Mouse.  The FLOW slider seems to be the only thing that adjusts how much effect applied.  If you continue to 'paint' your brush adjustments over an area with a flow of 20% it will gradually build up with either pen or mouse but the amount of pressure on the pen appears to make no difference.  If there is "Pen Pressure" available how do I enable it?  Thanks

No, it is not. Wish it was for adjusting the "flow" in the adjustment brush, but that's really what Photoshop is for (meaning local adjustments). I perform all global adjustments in Lightroom and open the image as a smart object in Photoshop. Much better control, Lightroom is too limited as to local adjustments to be truly useful. Other than "flow," I see no reason for pen pressure so it's ok.

  • Problem With Cintiq Pen Pressure in CS5

    Hey folks,
When using my Cintiq 12WX (using the latest drivers) on the CS5 I've found a strange quirk pops-up every now and then: sometimes it doesn't recognize/register the pen pressure and it goes from a thin line to solid flat line randomly. Like if one was using a mouse. I've searched the net to see whether this is an issue with the cintiq; the drivers for it; photoshop CS5 or any combination thereof and to see if there's a solution.
Unfortunately, all I've been able to find is that the issue most likely resides with CS5 and that there isn't any real solution. Here's a link to the wacom forums of a fellow who's dealing with the very same problem: http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5606
I hope that by inquiring here, on the adobe forums, that perhaps a solution can still be found. Perhaps someone here has dealt with this and has found a fix? Of course, if there isn't any fix to be found I also hope that perhaps this can com  to th attention of those working on photoshop itself and that a fix can eventually be cooked up.
    Thanks!

As far as we are aware, the problem is in the Wacom driver code.
Please check with Wacom for updates.

  • Pen-pressure control both opacity\flow AND size?

I distinctly remember very early versions of Photoshop (even well before CS, perhaps) in which I could choose a brush that was very valueable to me and that would allow me to control with Wacom pen pressure both the opacity and the size of the stroke. I vaguely remember it had to do with the air-brush icon
I can no longer find such a brush in photoshop.
In all my attempts to play with the options or brush settings, or choosing the `pressure opacity icon` or the `size opacity icon` and all combinations I tried, I caouldn`t find a brush that will allow me to control both, and I remember and know that once it did exist...
In screenshot 1 I show how when choosing opacity pressure control one gets these wonederful soft, cloudy, fluffy, gradient edges but how  even if the strokes seems to grow a bit thinner is actually the same width between the two parallel red lines.
In screenshot 2 I show how when choosing size pressure control one ges these pointy sharp edges and not the cloudy gradients of the previous example
In screenshot 3 I attemp[t a simulation - An artificial representation of the look and feel of that brush i`m referring to, long lost to me, that has both soft edges and can still be reduced to a thin line at the same time.

Conroy, the point you bring up is important, thank you.
The fade size and flow stroke would give the exact effect I`m looking for, if it could only be truly controled and did not impose a set and limited effect, in the sense that the stroke cannot be either lengthened, dragged,or modified in any way. It`s mere existence indicates that such an effect is still doable within the photoshop visual language.
If only I could find how to be able to get such an effect for actual drawing...
The loss of this ability spells a great handicap in my ability to use Photoshop.
I think that all I needed in ancient versions was to click the airbrush icon and I would have it, but now clicking this icon seems strangely to yield no visible effect, which is also a tell-tail sign by itself, don`t you think?
I wondoer whether other Wacom users are having the same problem and whether they are not too, suffering tremendously from the inexplicable dissapearance of that ability.
I`m currently using a 12WX Cintiq Wacom tablet, always with the latest drivers.

  • Pen pressure problems in Photoshop with the Yoga Thinkpad

    Hi!
I'm having problems with uneven pen pressure in Photoshop. When draw a few lines very sensitive some of them get's thick like it was drawn with full pressure when it actually wasn't.
I installed http://www.wacom.eu/index4.asp?pid=9278&lang=en but still having the same problem
Is there any fix to this? Is this problem related to the device, to Wacom or Windows 7?

Adobe supports any working stylus -- but your stylus may not implement all the APIs needed for applications like Photoshop.
Most likely you'll need to contact Sony and see if they have updated drivers for their stylus to support professional graphics applications.

  • Pen Pressure works.. but not in Cs3? Please help

    Hi there
I'm having a problem with the pen pressure dynamics on CS3. They can't be changed.
If I change it to 'pen pressure' I get a little yellow marker next to it which I assume means its not registering or recognizing.
    http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss154/Peardan/Yellow_error.jpg
The tablet I use is Wacom Intuos (I think its the original) http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt110/thedeekin/forsale/Intuos1.jpg
I know for a fact that the pen pressure works because I have a program that tests it.
    http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss154/Peardan/Stupidthingdunwork.jpg
That blue bar goes up the harder I press so I know its working..
Every method of fixing has been tested:
Driver in the box, Latest drivers, Every driver that was available for download,
    Unplug and plug,
    Ctrl+Alt+Shift.
    10million pc restarts.
It has always worked fine on my old computers which where xp, no problems but I got a new computer with 64bit Windows7.
As far as I can tell its photoshop thats not letting it work. CS3 is fully updated and works great aside from this problem which is stopping everything.
    Thanks for the help.
    I want to draw..

    Ok its fixed! Thanks guys!
Exactly what I did for those who want to know:
Opened photoshop with Ctrl+Alt+Shift and hit the pop up button
I then made the brush settings to normal and not pen pressure and closed it down.
Start -> Control Panel -> Programs/Uninstall a program -> Uninstalled Wacom tablet file
Went onto that link provided http://www.wacom.com/downloads/drivers.php
Selected Intuos GD and Windows 7.
I then downloaded the oldest driver down the bottom (Which apparently was the first one compatable with windows 7)
Installed and accepted the restart notification.
Before I checked Photoshop I opened Paint and tested the pen pressure on various brushes and kept it open
Then opened photoshop and put the settings on pen pressure again and it worked!
Doing it exactly like that was what seemed to get it working propperly.
    Thank you again!

  • Pen pressure not working properly!

Just installed Flash CC and tried using the Brush tool and the pen pressure isn't working properly! I have a Wacom Cintiq 24HD, I'm using Pen Pressure and Tilt and there is a serious lag between when I start drawing and when Flash starts to preview what I'm drawing (roughly two seconds). Once Flash starts the preview, the line I've been drawing jumps from where I start to the current position of the cursor without registering any curve I drew beforehand. It is seriously frustrating! Does anyone have the same problem?

    Hi Jackimo,
The issue is reported and we are tracking it.We will try to get it resolved asap. You can have a look at the thread for the detail :http://forums.adobe.com/message/5454376#5454376.

  • Uneven pen pressure in Photoshop CS6 Extended with Wacom Intuos5

I got Photoshop CS6 Extended recently, but the lines I draw in it aren't smooth, like they should be (example below).
The tablet produces perfect lines in any other bit of software (Flash,  ToonBoom, etc.), but not Photoshop. I've tried lots of different  solutions (uninstalling and reinstalling it, reverting back to an  earlier driver, clearing preferences, etc.), to no avail. Oddly, my  Intuos3 works fine in Photoshop, for a few minutes, before it crashes. If I try to adjust the Wacom Tablet Properties for CS6, it doesn't recognize any changes, but if I adjust the settings for Photoshop CS4, it does. All Wacom Drivers are up-to-date.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be most appreciated.

I've tried all of the above and had no results. I have the exact same issue as you, specially when working with a big brush. Even in the tablet settings panel I can see the sensitivity display go nuts after a certain threshold over 30% of pressure. I tend to use the hardest possible.  At this point I think it's probably a hardware problem with the pen or tablet surface but still, I had an intuos 3 for many years without any trouble and the intuos 5 is giving me problems now . Also I replied to you becouse this was kind of the only part of the internet where I could find the exact same issue with a screencap of it. thank's in advance to anyone that have a workaround or news about this!!!

  • Wacom Tablet Pen Pressure stops working in Photoshop after using Lightroom Local Adjustment Brush

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with my Intuos Pro Medium (driver 6.3.9w3 on Windows 8.1)
I am using Lighroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC 2014.
I an get the pen pressure to work in Photoshop without any problem. However, if I go into Lightroom and use the Local Adjustment Brush and then transfer the photo into Photoshop (Right Click Edit In => Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2014 CC) then the pen pressure stops working in Photoshop.
Really frustrating... The only workaround is to close both Photoshop and Lightroom, then reopen Photoshop, then usually the Pen pressure feature starts working again.
Has anyone experienced this before or has any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Guillaume

Your tablet driver isn't reporting pressure correctly.
The knockoff tablet drivers usually need to be revised for each new version of Photoshop (and we have no idea why).
Contact your tablet maker to see if they have updated drivers to fix their bugs.

  • Wacom pen pressure sensitivity with PS elements 9

I was just using the free trial with CS6 and was able to get  it to ignore the pen pressure sensitivity, so that it was the same size no matter how hard i pressed down. In elements I'm having a hard time in getting it to ignore the pressure sensitivity. I have the pen settings in the wacom software on the softer side so you dont have to press down hard to get the full size of the brush in photoshop, but when I go to test it out in PS it doesnt ignore the pressure.
Im using it on windows 7.
    Any ideas?

With the Brush Tool selected in pse 9 did you look at the settings for the graphics tablet?
It's a small arrow as in the screenshot below to reveal the popup menu to set the pressure options.
Since you posted in the full photoshop forum you might post over in the photoshop elements forum if the above doesn't work:

  • Change Cursor Size with Pen Pressure

Does anyone know of a way to make the paintbrush cursor size change dynamically according to pen pressure with a tablet?
I'm coming to Photoshop from GIMP, and in GIMP when you use more or less pressure on the tablet, the cursor icon automatically changes size based on the pressure so you know exactly how large a line the tool will draw.
In Photoshop it seems you can choose "normal" or "full size" for the cursor circle, or else use crosshairs, but there doesn't seem to be an option for a dynamically shaped cursor. Am I wrong and just missing something? Or does Photoshop really not have this feature?

When you press and hold Option/Alt  + Control  and Left mouse click and drag nothing happens?
(the button on your pen is set to left click?)
The Option/Alt key should always be the second key to the left of the spacebar
The Control key should always be the third key to the left of the spacebar

  • Pen pressure wont work with Elements 13

I am incredibly frustrated right now. I finally decided to upgrade my elements 8 to 13 because it was on sale. My Huion 580 tablet pen pressure functions work great with Photoshop Elements 8, so I assumed that I would not have a problem with Photoshop Elements 13. I have tried everything including playing with my tablet settings and brush settings in the program. Nothing will make the pressure sensitivity on the brush work! I know it is not a problem with the tablet because it still works just fine on my elements 8. The upgrade is useless to me unless I can get the pen to work. Any suggestions?
    thanks in advance

Which operating system are you using?
Does the tablet maker have any updated drivers?

  • Pen pressure issues with CS6

So, I'm having an odd issue with my tablet and its pressure sensitivity with CS6. I've got a Genius MousePen tablet; M508W model. I can use it on my mac computer with photoshop elements; pen pressure works just fine with it. In CS6, when I do the stroke preview for all of my burshes, it shows the tapering-- as well as in the brush settings. When I go to make an actual rush stroke though, it doesn't apply the pressure settings. I've got the most recent drivers for the tablet downloaded, All of the old driver software was uninstalled, I've made sure that the drivers are for my version of windows, I've tried setting the compatability back to windows 7 and using the windows 7 drivers, but STILL nothing. The only reason I'm lead to believe that this is an issue with CS6 is that the tablet works with PS Elements just fine. If anyone could help shed some light on the situation, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am having a similar issue.
Working in CS6 on a Cintiq Companion.
Pressure sensitivity disappears while I'm working.
The only way to get it back is to quit out of Photoshop and relaunch.
The pressure sensitivity works fine in Autodesk Sketchbook.

  • LR 3.2 - Adjustment Brush flow & Wacom pen pressure

I'm noticing that regardless of how much pressure I put down with the Adjustment Brush, I cannot get a full 100% flow in one stroke, especially when using a larger brush size. For instance, with the Mask Overlay turned on and my brush settings are Size 50, Feather 0, Flow 100, Density 100, if I press down once with the pen and press down with force, the mask isn't applied completely. I have to "scribble" a little to get the full amount of adjustment in the area. Is this the way the brush was designed or a bug in v3.2?

    SImilar issues here.
Today I completely uninstalled and reinstalled LR3.2. This issue, and many other issues, are still there. Everything else just works fine including other Adobe products, so it is a Lightroom problem.
I suggest that anyone that depends on Lightroom, NOT TO BUY this product (LR3). Stick to LR2, or something else.

  • I have Wacom Intuos 4, and for some reason pen pressure isn't working with PSE 10

I can still use wacom tablet pen to draw in Photoshop Elements 10, but I am frustrated because I could not get lines thinner and thicker with more pressure I apply with the pen like I could with Photoshop Elements 7 - and I had already checked "size"  in the tablet setting in PSE 10.  I also made sure I set up my Wacom Tablet Properties to apply to Photoshop Elements 10, and I still can't vary the lines like I want.   Any suggestions?  (also, could it be because I unwittingly bought and installed  34 bits PSE 10 in my 64-bit computer with Window 7  - is that what is preventing PSE 10 from making lines thin and thick with pen pressure?)
    Thanks for your help.

photodrawken, I went to Wacom website and looked up the latest driver.  I see Driver 4.60 for Windows -- will that work on my 64 Windows 7?   (The information didn't mention which Windows, but did warned not to install it on Window Vista 64.)
