Controlling Dutch MacBooks from a German MacBook (keyboard layout)

I work at a company which has about 200 MacBooks with Dutch keyboard layouts (QWERTY), but I've got a German keyboard layout (QWERTZ) on my own MacBook. ARD is installed on my MacBook with German Keyboard layout.
For some reason ARD uses the keyboard layout of the MacBook I'm controlling, instead of the keyboard layout of my own MacBook. So, when I'm controlling a MacBook with a Dutch keyboard layout and I press the Z key, a Y appears on the screen.
Why does ARD use the keyboard layout of the Mac I'm controlling, instead of the keyboard layout of the Mac ARD is running on? My fingers aren't situated on the keyboard of the Mac I'm controlling, but on the keyboard of my own Mac. In my opinion it would be obvious to use the keyboard layout of my own Mac, not the keyboard layout of the Mac I'm controlling.
How else are you going to manage hundreds of Macs in an international company which has English, German, French, Japanese, Chinese and some other keyboard layouts? Everytime you log on to a remote Mac you have to find out which keyboard layout is used on the remote Mac. This sounds as a serious bug to me.
Isn't there a way to let ARD use the keyboard layout of the Mac on which ARD is installed, instead of that of the system I'm controlling?

It may not be what you are after, but when I lived in Austria, I bought a normal desktop keyboard (German) and used that plugged in to the USB port on my PowerBook.

  • Refurbished MacBook keyboard layout issue

I just went through Apple online stores of several different countries, but found none of those mentioned the keyboard layout for any refurbished macbook (Pro or Air). But all stuff in the list in different stores are the same. Does this mean from which countired you buy, it comes with the keyboard layout in that locale (i.e. say buy one in Spain, get Spanish layout whereas in UK, get UK layout)? Any guys have any idea on this? Thx in advance.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which keyboard layout are you looking for?
Do you already have the MacBook Air listed in your profile?
You can change the keyboard in the International Preference Pane in System Preferences.

  • How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

    Thanks for the reply Mike
But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
    Any idea?

  • Networking / controlling Tiger G5 from Mac Pro?

I have a G5 Tiger and a Mac Pro Leopard.
Is there any way to control the G5 from the Leopard based Mac Pro?
I know there is screen sharing? but not sure if this is available on Tiger?
I have 2 screens on Leopard and want to somehow control the G5 from my 1 x keyboard/mouse?
Is this possible? I have tried Teleport but didnt work that great?

Don't know about the two screens shared -- I don't have anything with two screens.
Don't know what to say about speed and "jumpiness." I don't experience that on my Leopard Mac Pro connecting via wireless 802.11g to Leopard G4/867 tethered to router by ethernet cable. Didn't have the problem when the G4 was running Tiger, either.
You are not inadvertently going out onto the internet and back in. You would have had to turn on port forwarding in your modem/router and route port 5900 to your G5 and connect to your modem's ISP-assigned IP address (the one you see when you visit http://checkip.dyndns.com/).
My experience and consequently formed opinion has been that Apple's Screen Sharing blows any VNC client away, with regards to speed, "smoothness" of keyboard and mouse and remote screen rendering.
Both machines are tethered via ethernet cable to the router, right? I'm grasping at straws here, but try disconnecting one of the screens and see if that helps? Or perhaps disconnect the G5 screen ... after you have set the screen resolution on the G5 to match the Mac Pro's screen resolution. Maybe your router is not up to the task?
Granted, it will not be as smooth as sitting in front of the G5 itself, screen rendering for me is a bit "blocky," but it should be nearly as good as being there. I find it quite useful -- although I probably could not view a video running on the G5 via Screen Sharing on the Mac Pro. But I find mine is more than useable even when I tunnel the connection through ssh (secure shell) over the internet at large and that is with a 896kbps uplink to my ISP for the screen rendering of the "server" machine.
I honestly don't think you'll find anything better than the built-in Screen Sharing on the Mac Pro in conjunction with the built-in Apple Remote Desktop server on the G5...except maybe running Leopard on the G5, too.

  • [8.1 pro update1] Windows KEEPS changing and reinstalling keyboard layouts regardsless of IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout

Windows 8.1 is driving me nuts beyond believe once again. I have 8.1 Pro update 1 English, installed from the VLK iso from our Volume License / SPLA account. As we are a Dutch company, the Location is set to The Netherlands, as well as the date/time format.
Therefore in my keyboard settings the language is Dutch (NL) but I set my keyboard layout to US, as below:
As you can see there are no other languages our installed. This worked for years with Windows 7 and before with XP. Windows 8.1 however KEEPS changing my keyboard layout to plain Dutch making my keyboard unusable. The language bar in the systemtray, or whatever
it's called in this OS, shows THREE layouts, which are actually 'selectable' and work as if they were installed. However, they are not 'really' installed, as per the screenshots above.
This is driving me completely mad. Why on earth is Windows making descisions for me which I should be making myself? In addition, in my oppinion Windows should NEVER change somthing as trivial as a keyboard layout by itself. People don't change switch keyboard
even when logging on to a remote system that has a different layout configured. Whoever came up with this 'automatic switching per application' idea once again had no clue of real-life usage at all.
I've added those two languages I do NOT want to my keyboard layouts and removed them. Sure they are gone then, and as only language NLD with layout US is left, the language bar in systray is gone as well. After a few days all three are back, and my keyboard
    is producing wrong characters again.
I've tried with regvalue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout\IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout set to 1, to no avail at all. It just keeps changing. This should help to prevent my keyboard when changing when I RDP to one of my servers.
The advanced settings in Language don't help either:
'let me set a different input language for each app window' is unticked.
Override for default keyboard is now set to Dutch - US, like I want it. Doesn't help either.
I cannot reproduce it on demand, settings do NOT change when connecting to my RDP server(s). They do NOT change when I open any of my used programs, being IE, Chrome, CMD.exe, notepad and a few others. It shouldn't either as I disabled the 'keep settings
    per application'.
I have changed the keyboard shortcut from alt-shift or whatever it was to 'none'.
How to prevent Windows 8.1 completely from changing the keyboard layout I use? Is there any way to check WHY or WHAT actually changes my keyboard?

This might be really late to this post but I've been having this issue while playing games, particularly those which are complex enough to require Control, Alt, Shift. At first like some people here suggested
Windows Key + Space was the cause, but even after removing all alternate layouts (for reference, I want the UK layout, but it was switching to the US Layout) it was persisting.
This post pointed me in the right direction, go into your Language Options
    > Change Override (Advanced). At this stage I've noticed there is the Switching input methods section, look for
Change language bar hot keys and here I fount Alt + Shift
was being used for switching Between input languages - a key combo I'd probably hit quite often just purely by accident. You can change the key sequence to no binds.
I haven't fully tested it, but it appears to be working for now - and I hope its an extra option for people to look at if they're running into this issue.

  • How can I get Final Cut 7 to remember my customized keyboard layout?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this community, my name is Flavio, from Argentina.
I'm on a Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo 2, using Final Cut 7 and I'm using a customized keyboard layout (1 for zoom in, 2 for zoom out), but everytime I launch the application I have to go to Tools>Keyboard Layout to change it, is there a way to tel the ap to launch that layout almays?
    Thanks!

It works for me without doing anything special.  You might try deleting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
If that doesn't solve it, describe exactly what your doing to customize the keyboard.
I assume if you do a "save keyboard layout" from the tools menu: keyboard layout  after customizing the keyboard and then load keyboard layout after relaunching fcp, that at least works.

  • FCS doesn't remember my Keyboard Layout

    Hello everyone !
I'm living in France, I have a french keyboard, however my system is in English and all my applications are in English.
I've taken out from the package the keyboard layout for french keyboard in FCP. I put it in my FCP User Settings. I launched the application, choose the french keyboard layout (it then gives me the same alert message than whan I was with Mac OS X (10.4) : "Keys may not match properly". But then if I quit FCP and launch it again, the keys shortcuts don't work ("jkl" or "b" or any of them). I have to choose again the Keyboard Layout inf the Keyboard Menu. And that's boring...
(and I have to say it works perfectly on Tiger, it just appeared since Leopard).
I've tried to trash de FCP User Settings Folder, but it's the same.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks !

If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox then restoring tabs from the last session ("Save & Quit" or "Show my windows and tabs from last time") doesn't work.

  • Sun VDI3: wrong keyboard layout (US instead of de_CH) after power-up

    Hi all,
    I have a strange problem:
Despite trying this trick here .... :
    http://blogs.sun.com/ThinkThin/entry/using_sun_rays_with_non
and despite editing the "/tftpboot/SunCoronaP8.parms" file and setting the "kbcountry=28" parameter I always get the US keyboard layout at first when the Sun Ray DTU's boot up.
So to get the correct layout I first have to hit the "Quit" button in the VDI3 login mask -- only after this step I get the correct Swiss German (de_CH) keyboard layout.
    A few infos:
    - OS: Solaris 10u7
    - VDI3 Patch #2
    - Language is English (POSIX C) (this particular customer is a University ... so everything is supposed to be in English anyway)
    - Keyboards: Sun Type 6 USB, Swiss German layout (were delivered with the Sun Ray 2 DTU's)
I know that with the "GUI" firmware you can pre-configure the keyboard layout ... But this customer specifically doesn't want the "GUI" firmware. The Sun Rays are being used in the University's library and other public areas of the campus ... so we don't want to tempt the students into "playing" with the Firmware's menus (... they are good at using Google too and the instructions on how to trigger the menu aren't really hard to find ...). Password-protecting the menu is "security by obscurity" and the admins don't want that either .... So: no "GUI" firmware here.
Is there any other reliable way which would allow me to pre-set the keyboard code to 28 ??
BTW, is this a bug? Or why is the US layout being loaded first?
    Thanks in advance + regards,
    DJ.

  • Alternative keyboard layouts

    Hey everyone,
So I was considering making the move from QWERTY to a keyboard layout that's a little more efficient, so I thought I'd take a poll to see
who is using what kind of keyboard layout and why.  I'm curious about Dvorak, programmer's Dvorak, and colemak, and have been researching each of their individual pros and cons. I'm thinking Dvorak sounds like the best out of all of the above, but colemak sounds relatively intregueing as well.  so what's your opinion?

Just to let everybody know I am now 28 years old. I first learned how to type in typing class in junior high. I was using the Qwerty layout. The only nice thing I can say about the Qwerty layout is that it's available at any computer you want to use without any configuration.
Then I looked online for a better way to type and more efficient. That's when I learned about Dvorak keyboard layout. This was about four years ago. I stuck with it for about two years. I felt my right hand was doing a lot more typing than my left hand. It felt too lopsided for me. But that's just my opinion. I went on the hunt for something better than Dvorak and I found the glorious Colemak keyboard layout.
I have been typing with it ever since. My hands are a lot more comfortable and I can type faster now. It took me a month to actually get comfortable with the keyboard layout. If you actually go to this Java applet on Colemak's website.
    www.colemak.com/Compare
You can just copy and paste a body of text and click on Calculate it will analyze the typing and compare the three different keyboard layouts. I just hope it becomes an ANSI standard like Dvorak has. I hope that happens in the future.
I just want everybody to know there is a third option out there and its great. If ever Colemak goes away I will be going back to Dvorak. I will never learn the Qwerty keyboard layout ever again.
Just wanted to give my two cents worth.

  • Firefox won't type characters made with a "control + " combination on Macbook with Turkish Qwerty Pc keyboard layout.

I cant type any special character made with "control + [key]" combination such as ["] or [/]; neither into address/search bar nor the inputs on webpages.
I use a Macbook Pro with Turkish Qwerty PC keyboard layout.
And these combinations work in other applications such as textedit, safari etc.

    Hi,
Why are the characters mixed up in the session?
This issue can occur if the keyboard language has been switched on the remote PC while running a remote desktop session. In the case you would like to switch to a different keyboard
    language follow these instructions.
    Important:
The remote PC selects the system language of the device running the remote desktop client and not the keyboard language. When switching the keyboard language on your device,
you need to manually switch the keyboard language on the remote PC.
    1. Open settings on your device.
    2. Tap General and then tap International.
    3. Tap Language and select the language running on the remote PC.
    4. Open the RD Client and connect to the remote PC and check if the Windows keyboard language matches the language that you selected.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

How can i control my iPad from my macbook?

The iPhone has a "remote" app that lets you control Keynote on a Mac, but not on another iOS device (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch).
There are some apps that let you control limited content on another iOS device - but the content has to be within the app. You might check out SyncPad - perhaps you can import the presentation into it and then control it on the iPad.
