Controlling rotation stage with NI card/controller

I am trying to control a rotation motor (Velmex). I have a NI PCI-7414 card and NI MID-7604 stepper motor drive already installed. My problem is in how to actually send commands to control the motor via LabVIEW software (ValueMotion). I am not extremely software inclined but I know the basics of LabVIEW. Has anyone done this before and can help. Thanks -)

Thank you for contacting National Instruments.
One good starting place for motion control is to use the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) program to setup and test your motion controller. If you are using the PCI-7314 with ValueMotion 5.0.2 (latest version), then you should be able to use MAX. If not, I highly recommend upgrading to 5.0.2. Also note that ValueMotion is an obsolete product, so updates are no longer being made.

To use the motion controller in LabVIEW, I recommend first taking a look at the example programs. ValueMotion will install example VIs for simple move operations in the LabVIEW\examples\motion\ValueMotion folder.

  • Thorlabs rotation stage control using LabWindows

    Hi there
    I have been trying to program automated control of Thorlabs rotation stage PRM1Z8 based on TDC001 DC servo controller using Lab Windows Actives Controller Wizard.
    The steps followed by me as follows:
    1. Insert Activex control (thorlabs stage GUI) in the panel using .ocx file obtained with the stage. Edit the control properties to put in the controller serial number and then right click on the control to generate the activex control driver. 
    The following code was written. Although I do not obtain any compiling error, I have not managed to communicate with the stage.

    Hello Deepa,
    I never used Thorlabs products, but as you can see in the online help for the command, GetObjHandleFromActiveXCtrl returns the obtained handle into the last parameter, in your case _tmp1; I suppose this is the variable you must pass to the following command(s) in the Thorlabs library. The return value _tmp2 is an error code which you should use to add some error checking to your code.
    You should also check into Thorlabs documentation the exact meaning and usage of the command you are using: it is possible that the return values are error codes that may give you some guidance on how to clean up any error you may have in function calls.

    You need to enable it from bios first...
    Then you will recieve a prompt during boot to hit f10 to configure it.

  • Flex 14 SD card reader not working with larger cards on Windows 8.1

    The card reader in my Flex 14 is behaving very oddly. When I insert a 16GB SDHC card it makes the 'USB inserted' noise and the card shows up under device manager but I can't access it through file explorer. The card reader works fine with smaller SD cards that I have. I tried the card in another, Win7 laptop and it worked fine.
    I see a number of other people are having a similar problem and I have followed all of the troubleshooting advice I can find, but nothing is working. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    This is what I have tried:
    1. Leaving the card in the camera and attaching the camera via USB cable to the laptop: same result, noise, but can't access the card.
    2. Trying to reassign the drive letter through storage controller: it shows the card but if you right click it to assign it a drive letter it says the 'file is missing'.
    3. Downloaded the Win8.1 x64 driver from Lenovo website and installed. This stopped the card being recognised at all.
    4. Installed the Win8 xc4 driver: this got me back to the noise but no action stage.
    5. Updated Windows.
    6. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver numerous times both with the card inserted and without it and with restarting the computer after unistall and after reinstall.
    7. Ran Ubunutu from a live USB: This allowed me to see the card and copy its contents to the laptop's HDD.
    So it seems to be some incompatibility between the Lenovo drivers and Win8.1. Potentially it's to do with the USB drivers rather than the card reader drivers as the result when using the USB cable and the camera was the same as putting the card in the card reader. Is there a way to update these?
    Any other troubleshooting steps I could take?

    What size are the cards?
    Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
    Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
    Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • StorEge A1000 + PC (with Mylex960 Raid Controller)

    PC = PIII / 800EB / 256MB / 20GB
    Raid card = Mylex DAC960
    StorEdge = A1000 with 3 x 18Gb drives loaded.
    Wehn Mylex scans for a new scsi device, Storedge A1000 can't be traced/probed. I tried this with HP scsi box and were able to probe the external devices but for Sun Storedge A1000 it was not successfull.
    Any advise on how I can probe/trace this external device (Storedge A1000).
    I am planning also to install solaris 10 (x86) and hopefully Solaris could detect the external storage (series of drives) at the application level. (cross finger)

    Can you describe the features and specifications of that SCSI card ?
    The A1000 array has a High-Voltage-Differential interface.
    (See its link in the Sun System Handbook)
    HVD is not common in the PeeCee universe.
    The array already has a RAID controller in its chassis,
    and will not work with a RAID controller SCSI card.
    Any attempts to use a LVD card or a S/E card will just not work, either.
    It would be invisible to the SCSI chain.
    ... then, additionally, you're going to need some sort of RAID control software
    to administer the A1000 and its internal RAID controller.
    if you do eventually get a compatible HBA, you also need to be aware
    that functional support for the array was specifically dropped from Solaris 10.
    You'd need to run Sol8 or Sol9 with RM6 software, and I cannot remember
    whether RM6 was ever ported to x86 Solaris.
    I fear you're just going to be out of luck,
    and may need to get rid of the array (e.g. Ebay ?).

  • SMC100pp rotation stage

    Hello,
    I am trying to program a Newport SMC100PP controller to run a Newport TRA6PPD linear actuator to move a Newport 481 rotation stage.
    My goal with this program is to have the stage move at a slow velocity form designated point 1 to point 2 while reading out the absolute position.
    The program that i have written is having a problem. Every time i try and run the program i get an "Error on reset - Timeout" error and the light on the front panel of the SMC100pp controller reads solid green as if the system is ready to go.
    In the code below i have the top part which simply reads the motor position and time and saves that to a txt file. The top part is necessary because it is a reduced set of code for the rest of an instrument i want to incorporate this rotation stage into. The bottom code is my program where i am trying to 1st initialize the step motor, 2nd enter/modify controller velocity on command part way through a larger experiment once i see some preliminary data and 3rd execute the programed controller movement on command as the last part of a larger experiment to finish the experiment.

    As you are using a library or VIs that are provdided or created by the Newport company it seems, you need to contact them and verify the conditions needed for Reset to be executed correctly.
    RIght now you are getting a timeout that may refer to a VI not given the sufficient time to execute or a similar condition.
    Please contact Newport support about this controller and the VI's.

  • Having issues with your Card Readers in Windows 7 not working? Here's resolution!

    You do not need drivers for the card reader. There are NO Windows 7 drivers.
    (1.) Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
    (2.) Click on the Administrative Tools a window will open.
    (3.) In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management
    (4.)  When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage. 
    (5.) This is where you will see Drives listed. The Card Reader will be listed as 1-4. Just right click & assign Drive Letter.
    Right click on each of the drives 1-4 and assign a Drive Letter. Now place your SD card in the correct slot and an a pop up for auto play will show. Now you reader works and will also show when you open COMPUTER it will show them as removable drives with proper drive letters. It took me several days to figure out after no help from HP or internet search. So when found the drives listed I just right clicked saw assign drive and it worked. Hope a lot of people searching on internet find this reply so that it will help them get there card reader working again under Windows 7 because even there tech's don't have an answer.   • Thinkpad T420 with Optimus: Card is turning on at random

    Hey yall,
    I'm using bumblebeed on my Thinkpad T420 and upgraded to bbswitch for power management. The discrete card still shows up in lspci when it's 'turned off" but power consumption goes down and bumblebee says its off, so I figure that's the best I'm gonna get.
    Weird thing is, it keeps turning itself on for no good reason. I manually switch the daemon on and off, which I thought was completely controlling all software interface with the card. Apparently ACPI is turning the card on for some reason, and I don't want it to. The only reason I noticed is because I was watching the logs to figure out unrelated ACPI behavior. Pasted below is when I unplugged the laptop and plugged it back in a couple times to see what happened. About a minute later, ACPI wakes up the card. The stuff after that is me running a script that cycles the daemon, which is the most consistent way I have to disable the card manually. I think I pressed a laptop button in there somewhere too.
    Does anyone know why ACPI might be waking up the card at random, and how to get it to stop? I have a feeling it's eating away at my battery without my knowledge by turning itself on when I'm on the road.

    Ok, so, apparently it is turning itself on when I'm using Flash. I am scratching my head. My browser should have no idea that card exists, because I use optirun to select things to run in that layer. And the bumblebee daemon is off. This seems like a security issue! I'm only able to control the card with root privileges; how on earth is Flash getting around that?
    Any ideas are welcome, this is a little over my head. I don't understand ACPI in any intimate way.

  • Problems with a card binding.

    Hello, I had a problem with a VISA CLASSIC card binding (Money on the account is). When I try to buy or download the appendix, jumps out a window with control of editing of the card:
    There was a problem with drawing of the account for the previous purchase. Update a method of payment.
    Further, when I entered all data correctly, jumps out other message:
    Your method of payment isn't accepted. Enter other method of payment.
    Earlier I easily managed to download appendices. But after I wanted to buy one appendix, this nightmare began ((

  • Will SATA 11  HD work with sonnet SATA controller

    Hi I need more space and have seen this on eBay
    Will it work with my G4 Giga fitted with a Sonnet Serial ATA (it doesn't say whether or not on the box.)
    I already have a Seagate 7200 3.5 500gb fitted and it works fine.
    If my Sonnet is not compatible what is the biggest HD I can fit using the Sonnet SATA controler?

    The Sonnet SATA controller will support up to the current 1TB models.
    Not sure about the "kit". The software that is included is most probably PC. And, there are no guarantees that the cables provided will work for you. Typically, a 270º connector is best for the data cable. Depending on the drive, some have "legacy" Molex power connectors, so the power cable wouldn't be necessary. And, as with the data cable, a 90º power cable would allow better fit when closing the door of the tower.
    But, if the price is right, it could be cheaper than a bare drive alone, and you don't have to use the rest of the kit...
    If it 's just the Seagate hard drive, the 7200.11 1TB will work. So will the Hitachi 7K1000 1TB drive. And, so will the Western Digital GP 1TB drive.
    While no specific information that it is needed, the Seagate has a jumper to force 1.5Gb/s. The WD drive has a similar "Opti 1" jumper. The drives should auto negotiate to the lower transfer rate, so this should not be an issue with SATA II drives and the Sonnet.

  • RT Host VI does not communicate with FPGA VI with PID Discrete controller

    Hi. I am using LV 7.1 RT with PXI 7831R. While developing an application with a PID controller in the FPGA vi, I have run into the following problem:
    1.   After a successful FPGA compile, the code runs directly on the FPGA device and the PID controller works fine.
    2. After I switch to the RT and run the host vi, it shows no activity from the FPGA vi. I look at the while loop count of the FPGA (indicator named 'FPGA-count' in the snaps below)) and it shows 'zero'. I have refreshed the FPGA vi reference but to no avail.
    3. If i take out the PID related stuff from the FPGA vi, then the Host vi to FPGA communication works.
    I have attached snaps of a simplified version of the fpga and RT vi's. If anyone can help, that would be greatly appreciated.
    I also read that the PID control toolkit needs to be installed. It is installed on the host computer and shows in Automation explorer under LV 7.1. Does it need to be installed on the remote machine that is the RT controller as well. if so, then how to do that.

    It seems like the FPGA is not running for some reason when you are running the RT VI. Without having the actual VIs to look at I can only make a few guesses why.
    On the Open FPGA VI Reference make sure the option is set to Open and Run, not just Open. Right click on the node to check this option.
    On the RT VI, make sure that stop-FPGA is False before you start.
    On the FPGA VI, make sure that the default value for stop-FPGA is set to False.
    In the RT VI check the error cluster passed to the loop to make sure that there are not errors and the FPGA VI is actually running.
    If you are using the PID function on the FPGA, you do not need any additional SW installed on the RT controller. If you are using the PID function in LV RT then you do need to install the PID toolkit on the RT controller. This is done from MAX (Measurement and Automation Explorer) using the Install Software option for the controller.

  • New to instrument control: attempting control of E5062A with GPIB cable and C program

    Hey everyone!
    I'm lost as where to start controlling an instrument we have in the lab.
    I'll give you my setup:
    It is a VNA, agilent/keysight E5062A.
    Controller is a desktop server running RHEL 5.
    I have a GPIB Cable.
    Program needs to be written into C so that it can be incorporated into the test program we are using.
    I have the programmers manual but it doesn't tell me much on how to start. It does tell me how to set the instrument(E5062A) gpib address. 
    I've also gathered that i will need some sort of I/O library, VISA or SCPI?

    Do you also have a GPIB controller such as NI's USB-GPIB? Acable by itself its worthless. A better choice would probably have been the instrument with a USB or Ethernet connection, but no matter, the communication is the same.
    With the NI controller, you first install the NI-488.2 driver and then NI-VISA. VISA is an api that abstracts the actual physical connection. Code for a GPIB connection will run unmodified of you change to USB or Ethernet. When you install the drivers you are also given the option to install example code that should help you get started.

    P.S. SCPI is the instrument's programming language. It's built-in as the manual makes clear.

  • To increase the framerate of a Basler Cameralink Camera(A504K) with a Card Grabber PCIE-1429

    Hi,
    I am using a monochrome Basler Cameralink Camera(A504K)of resolution 1280x1024 with a card grabber PCIE-1429 (x4 slot). The image acquisition is controlled through MAX  of LabVIEW version 11.0.1. The problem is that when I try to reduce the number of rows(more specifically Height) from 1024 to 32(say)in the acquisition window(of MAX), the frame rate of the camera should increase almost upto 16,000fps. But it is not going beyond 248fps. Can you suggest  me, why is it so happening, Or How to increase its frame rate? Also, below the image window there appeared something like: 1280x32    1X   8-bit image  9. What does 1X actually mean here?For your ready reference I am also attaching the image of the acquisation window.

    Hi Anto,
    things are more complicated in my case. The computer I/O and/or speed of the HDD do no let me to save large stream of frames at desired frame rate. Therefore, I do following:
    1) send each frame into the queue; I had to reduce frame size to 720x512 instead of full resolution
    2) since I have 8 cores on that machine, I created 4 tasks which do only one thing: take a frame from the queue and save it into the disk as fast as possible with no image processing
    3) saving on the HDD is an issue, so each of 4 tasks save frames into the virtual 24Gb drive instead of the real HDD. Even SSD drive will not help you!
    4) note, frames are saved in an uncompressed BMP format! If you attempt to save them as jpg then your CPU will spend crucial 2-10ms for compressing it.
    With this implementation and camera (with specs of only 340fps) I managed to grab frames with peak 735fps rate. My point is that your bottleneck probably lies not in the method you use/call to save the frames, but in computer hardware and I/O. You have to accumulate frames in RAM or virtual drive and then save them without processing.
    I still have some frame loses, it is approximately 1-2% of the frames are lost. I do not know why.  Some notes:
    1)      to achieve as less as possible frame loss you have to minimize information you output on UI in real-time.
    2)      Utilize multitasking!
    3)      Put highest priority for your VI (check settings in properties)
    4)      In theory the 64bit should perform a bit better than 32bit LabView, in my experience it is in opposite. I run 32bit LabView on 64bit Windows7 machine. This is strange…
    5)      Unfortunately 32bit LV has limitation on RAM allocation (4Gb only) otherwise I would store all captured frames in RAM (32Gb) avoiding even usage of the virtual drive. I use 24Gb virtual drive. It is enough for me to capture frames for about 1-1.5 minutes @735fps.
    6)      If you need any kind of real-time image processing (which I would like to have) then probably you need to purchase FPGA card and program it.
    Actually, seem that LabView and VDM modules do not utilize computer hardware optimally. I would like to use the power of all cores and even GPU. The GPU can encode and process images, but LV has limited support of it.
    The best option for lossless capturing, at least for me, is to find the time and write a C++ code which will do the job.
