Controlling sound volume in Finder

I've recently changed from Panther to Snow Leopard.
On Panther I could control the sound volume of music files (and play them from any point in time) within Finder. On SL, pressing the space bar brings up something to play the music from any point, but without a volume control.
I often need to play music quieter than is possible with keyboard controls alone, so have been opening the files in Quicktime, iTunes or Garageband - which each have their drawbacks.
Does anyone have a better solution, preferably within Finder?

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I find that I can reduce the volume by three clicks beyond the normal keyboard, but no further - so not as far as in Quicktime or iTunes. This is certainly a help, but I would still like to go quieter if possible?
(It is often for music recorded say from a singing lesson and input from an external device, but not necessarily to save on the computer. Or I may have saved it, but don't want it in the iTunes library... etc)

    I can confirm this is NOT working, nor has it been since this version of Skype was released.  It works in Skype for Windows 7, but that is the desktop version.  It also works in the desktop version on Windows 8 and 8.1, but this forum is for the "modern" version that is downloaded from the Windows Store.  I have tried this on at least six computers and it fails 100% of the time.  I tried it prior to posting this message (5 minutes ago) to ensure that it had not been recently fixed and it has not.  Perhaps there is something unique to your setup that makes it work for you while it fails for everyone else, but speaking for myself and everyone I know that has used this version of Skype the issue remains.
    The OP even mentioned that they tried this method and it did not work as expected.

  • Can Mac OS X control sound volume from the bash shell?

    hi!
    first time ever that i ask in a forum something....
    I wanted to know if there was something that looked like the amixer function for linux. I want to control the overall output volume of my audio card, without using AppleScript. I tried to look for something on the net, but all i was getting was just useful (and a lot) for Applescript. I was wondering if there is something that could be done with the terminal commands.
    Thanks

    Try using a Terminal command such as:
    osascript -e 'set volume 1'

    I dont know if you can fix it.
    Do you have enough experience to disassemble the notebook?
    Do you have good experience in soldering?
    The volume controller is fixed on the motherboard its not easy to say what happens maybe there are some loose contacts
    I think its better to contact a notebook technician because he has more experience as a common notebook user like me and you!

  • Sound volume control unresponsive after waking from sleep

    Lately, a strange problem has developed on my MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008), running Mac OS X 10.6.4:
    After waking the MacBook from sleep, the sound volume control keys on the keyboard does not affect the volume control of:
    * Neither the sound volume output by the built-in speakers,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the menubar,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences,
    Only the sound volume slider/indicator in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences has an effect on the actual volume ouput by the built-in speakers.
    First I thought the problem was affected by disconnecting a set of analog headphones while the MacBook was sleeping -- it seemed that after sleep the volume control keys on the keyboard and menubar item still was set to affect the headphone port and not the built-in speakers.
    However, the problem just occured after sleeping without anything connected to the MacBook. The built-in speakers were muted, when the MacBook lid was closed, and the computer went to sleep - after waking from sleep the built-in speakers were unmuted - and control was only possible through System Preferences.
    Any ideas?

    I've been having the same problem on my Mac Pro for a while, finally decided to see if there were some other people having the problem. I'll see if the others have a solution yet.
    One workaround I've been doing is to go to Preferences -> Sound and select a different output device. For me, I have to flick to Internal Speakers and then back to Line Out.

  • Sound Volume Control

    If I have library song playing using a simple code like:
    var mySong:Song = new Song();
    mySong.play();
    How do I use a button to control its volume so that each time
    it is clicked the volume goes up or down by a little.
    Thanks for your help.

    i don't know how you want one button it to work. i can't
    think of any natural way to make one button work to increase and
    decrease volume that would be obvious to users.
    for example, you could make the button a toggle so on all odd
    numbered clicks the volume decreases and on even clicks it
    increases, but this probably wouldn't be intuitive for
    users.

  • Change the sound volume increment?

    Is there a way to change how much the Apple remote and keyboard increments/decrements the system sound volume?
    Let me explain... I have the Bose Companion 5 sound system. It comes with a little desktop controller to adjust and mute the volume. The desktop volume controller is nice and all, but it's completely independent from the Mac OS volume controls. I could crank the Bose control all the way up, but doing so makes it such that even the lowest Mac OS volume setting is still louder than I'd like (easily audible through the walls), and quiet white noise is heard even if the Mac is muted. Setting the Bose volume to something in the middle or lower limits my volume flexibility when listening to music and I come across that occasional song that I want cranked louder. I know I'm whining, but hear me out.
    I recently bought a new desk and made an interesting discovery while setting everything back up. Somehow I had forgotten to connect the Bose volume controller. When I grabbed the Apple remote to adjust the system volume, it seemed to directly adjust the volume on the Bose system (this setup can get VERY loud this way), and no white noise when the Mac is muted. I love the idea of leaving it like this, but even the first notch above mute (via keyboard or remote) is pretty loud. Finite control is possible from the volume preferences panel, but who wants to open that every time to change the volume?

    I don't know if these two AppleScripts will help you or not but give them a try.
    Place them in your Applications folder or your AppleScript folder (within your Applications folder), then drag them into your Dock.
    They are background scripts so you will not see them launch in the Finder.
    Have iTunes playing or some other app playing when you test them.

  • Control sound in timeline

    Hy,
    I've some mc called, one a time, with attachMovie named
    mcTarget, each of
    this has one speaker track sincronized with the animation on
    the stage. For
    this reason sound is put directly in timeline in stream mode
    (proprieties>>Sincr: stream). But now I cant control
    the volume of these
    sounds. I'll tryed to do this:
    //on main root
    mySound = new Sound(); //no specify target to refer a "global
    sound"
    function Volume(val){
    mySound.setVolume(val);
    trace(val);
    // in another place
    Volume(50);
    This works only with a sound placed in main root but does
    nothing if the
    sound is placed on a nested mc (my case).
    Someone have an idea or a alternative way to do this?
    Thanks
    Roger

    This is the "canonic way", but you can use that code to do a

    Sure, it's works with sound put in a root timeline..

  • Satellite A100-532: microphone sound volume is extremely low

    I just bought Satellite A100-532 and I have a problem with sound input. I can't use microphone to chat with my friend on msn or even to record my voice on to the hard drive because the sound volume is extremely low.
    I tried turning up all the volume on the desktop and on the RealTek HD sound manager but did not help. Microphone is working perfectly fine as I can hear myself well on the speakers.
    Normally, with my old laptop (M30 series) I could use the Sound Recorder to record music which I play using Winamp or WinMediaPlayer but for this new laptop it does not detect any sound at all..just silence.
    Please advise.

    Hi
    You should check also the volume controls in the "Sound & Audio devices" in control panel.
    In the "Volume" tab please go to "Advanced".
    Then a "Volume control" should appear.
    Check if all controls are set to high level.
    Furthermore enter the "options" and "properties" and enable all volume controls.
    Change also to "recording" and enable there also all controls.
    Additional you should check if the all "recording controls" are set to high.
    Use "Advanced" option of mic and play around with the mic boost settings.
    I'm sure you will find the best settings for your mic recording

    Hey Bill,
    Check to see if the option for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." is turned off. When it is turned on, you would need to hold the Fn key while hitting one of those keys will make it work they way icons are displayed. To find out where this option is, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and in the Keyboard tab is where you want to be. Take a look at the article below for more information.
