Controlling Speed and other Frame Rate Questions!

Hello After Effects Community!
I have a few questions about a specific video situation I'm working with.
I have footage in 720p at 60FPS. I want to slow down sections of the video by easing into slow motion. What FPS should my comp be? should I make the comp 29.97 or 24 and then bring in the 60 fps footage and time remap it?
Basically I want to have it ply at normal speed and slow down a specific part and then have it speed up again. Help!

Your composition settings should be decided based on how the final product is being presented.  If you're displaying in a cinema, you'll probably want 24fps.  If you're playing on a TV, or via DVD or BluRay, or on YouTube, you'll probably want to use the standard frame rate for the country you live in - 29.97 in the US, Japan etc.  25fps in Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc.   If you're doing some kind of high-end output, you may have the facility to use a high frame rate, but I suspect you'd already know about that if it were the case.
Interpret the footage in AE at its correct frame rate (60fps in your case), then use Time Remapping to adjust the playback speed.

  • Running a smoot and constant frame rate?

    Hi,
    Can someone please show me a way in which I can maintain a constant fram rate, cause the only use of:
    try {
    Thread.sleep(snooze);
    }catch (InterruptedException ex) {
    // do nothing
    is a bit bumpy, i.e. the frame rate increases and decreases as it wishes
    Is there a better way, perhaps using a different method all together?

    A smooth animation has a constant framerate.
    Regardless of the FPS, if you are rendering your frames at a constant interval your animation will be smooth.
    What you use as your trigger is upto you.
    1)Thread.sleep(constantInterval-frameRenderTime);is a simplistic approach, but will work for the most part.
    2)System.currentTimeMillis()-prevTime < constantIntervalwill also work fine, but requires a 1/2 decent system clock granuality
    3) Time based.
    Frames are rendered as fast as possible, and motion is scaled relative to the length of the frame. Higher FPS=Smoother motion.
    Time based is best for 3D only though, due to the way the human brain interpolates motion.
    4) Vsync. (fullscreen only - PageFlipping BufferStrategy - bs.show())
    Not realy a timing mechanism, but it is a trigger that is sent at a constant rate (the actual speed depends on your monitor & gfx card).
    If you can ensure each frame takes less time to render than the time between vsyncs. You will never 'miss' a frame, and consequently will have a smooth fps.

  • Editing clips and preserving frame rate

    Occassionally I take a rather long video and a significant portion of it has no value to the final project.  I am aware there is a way to only import parts of the clip directly from the computer, but as I understand it the file will end up on my internal hard drive.  I would prefer to keep all of my clips on an external drive.
    Question one: Is there a way to do that?
    I have some larger video files that are on my external drive and I would only like to import part of them. I want to preserve the frame rate at 60 or 120fps so I can get good slow motion when I edit the video in my project. I tried to edit the file in FCPX and then export it, but I can only find a way to export it at 30fps.  I was hoping to export and archive those files for future projects and then delete the larger video files.
    Question two:  Is there a way I can edit clips that were shot at 60 or 120 fps so I can then re-import them into FCPX for future use?
    Not sure if compressor can help me with any of this.  Any help would be appreciated!

    1.  You understand wrongly. The imported media goes to whichever drive you designate. The file exports in whatever frame rate the project is. If you're trying to create slomo with your 60p media you edit in a 30p project. That's what you export. You can edit in a 60p project but that would defeat the purpose of bring able to confirm the video for slomo.
    2.  You might be able to edit in the QuickTine player to trim a shot.

  • Canon Vixia HF20 and "Progressive" frame rates: how do you edit them in PE7, or any PE version?

    My owner's manual is splayed before me: I have these options with my  Canon HF20 Camcorder:
    I can record video in: 60i (standard) - I guess they mean "default"
    I can also record in PF30 and PF24.
    It says this:
    PF30: 30 frames per second, progressive. Use this frame rate to easily edit your recordings, for example, to post them on the Web.
    (I do post my videos on the web: indeed that is all I do with them. The Web is a free storage closet that we get as a bonus, by paying for monthly Internet charges.)
    My manual also says this:
    PF24: 24 frames per second. progressive. (That is what it says - progressive.) Using this frame rate will give you recordings a cinematic look. When combined with the Cine Mode recording program, the cinematic look will be enhanced.
    I have noticed no interesting differences. And editing these .mts files is a pain, no matter what format one uses.
    I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation, regarding AVCHD and editing problems using any version of PE.
    I constantly have trouble with artifacts - ghosting - combing - all manner of problems, which is enhanced by using the available HD. That is, in 1920x1080, the drop-frame system creates highly compressed, problematic files.
    These are hard to edit, but can be done decently using a kind of sleight of hand. I often downgrade 1920x1080 to 720p in editing, just to get the jumpy quality to look decent. This usually works.
    I wonder what others do. I really miss 8mm. ... sylvester

    The 60i setting should work best with PRE with the Full HD 1080i preset.
    As for performance that can be highly dependant on your system and how it is set up. By default most PC's startup with a whole load of cr*p provided by your supplier - all of which can eat into your performance. Anti-Virus software (especially McAfee) can cripple PRE. • How to add Footage to existing With different Pixel aspext ratios and/or frame rate?

    Can someone help me? I am working on a project. I shot footage with my Canon XA10 and with my DSLR. I want to put footage in my film from both. What is correct way to add both of these in one film so it looks correct. Aspect and frame rates are different for both.
    I have tried making a new sequence with correct aspect ratio and then adding that sequence to project but it is still not correct. Hope I am making sense!
    thank you!

    Don't bother. PR is fully capable of handling that for you. Take a look at PPBM5 Benchmark
    The test timelines contain PAL and NTSC material, DV, HDV, AVCHD and in the new version even XF 422 material, all in a single timeline.

  • Crackling sound, Electrocuted?  Popping, and low frame rates.

    First, I hear a crackling sound in my headphones, and you may think I am crazy, but I get nauseas and feel a slight tingle, as though I am getting shocked.
    The fram rates drop to about 7fps while I am playing games, and I hear the noise and feel this. I first noticed this when playing World of Warcraft, then, after shutting the game, I noticed it continued while I was using Ventrilo, and then even after it continued.
    It seems to stop after 20 seconds soemtimes, and other times can last for several minutes. I have taken my headphones off and even unplugged them, but notice the popping continues in the internal speakers.
    I do not think it is the game, as it happens outside the game, and even outside ventrilo. I am not sure why my headphones would / could shock me, but I swear that is what I am feeling. I tried making sure I was plugged into a surge protector, and have tried other plugs with it happening the same.
    It does not always happen. Some nights it will not happen at all, and others, it seems to happen every 30 minutes or so.
    I am using a MacBook Pro 17" non glossy. 2.16 Core Duo. I have 2Gigs of Ram, and other than this, the computer works great.
    PLEASE, if anyone else has had this problem, let me know. My FPS in game go from 50, down to 8fps, and in general the entire computer comes to a crawl.
    Thank you,

    Hi there,
    I am not at all an expert on gaming and dont have any on my MBP, however what i can recommend you is the usual maintenance motions you can follow.
    1- reset the power management
    Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • Bootcamp Vista and Low Frame Rates

    Hey Guys,
    I've got a MBP Santa Rosa, and I've loaded Vista (both 32bit and x64) at varying stages onto bootcamp, and I seem to get very low frame rates. In TF2 I'm only topping out around 50 to 60 (vsync isn't on)
    I've tried the official bootcamp drivers and also some from Laptopvideo2go. I'm at a bit of a loss here.
    Can anyone recommend a decent driver set or at least provide some numbers on what they're getting in TF2 or the Source engine stress test?
    Screen settings are at 1280x1024 with all settings at default recommendation.
    Tried 3dmark06 but it runs at about 15FPS in the first test and I bail out cause I can't bare to watch it like that.

    Fair point Sorry

  • Film Scoring Frame Rate Question

    I'm about to start scoring an indy film. It was shot in 24p (23.98 frame rate) but the editor supplied me a version that's straight-up 24fps.
    As it turns out, the dialog and SFX in this version are out of sync in places, so they're going to have to send me a new QT file. But before they do...
    We know that Logic doesn't support the 24p rate, but I believe I can work at virtually any frame rate as long as I'm referencing their timecode when placing pops, etc. Is this correct?
    Also, I'm also of the feeling that the frame rate of the movie they supply me with should be exactly the same as theirs -- 24p -- and not rendered at 24 fps. Does that sound right? Or, considering that there's no way I can get Logic's timecode counter to match picture for the entire film, does it matter if I score to a 24fps render?
    -=iS=-

    I work with a lot of 24p material in Logic. I've never had a problem. I do ask that the timecode be burned into the video I use for scoring so that I can have an absolute reference even though Logic doesn't natively calculate anything for 23.978 frame rates.
    It can get harder if you work in a big team but ultimately I've not once had an issue that was related to Logic's sadly lacking 23.978 ability (scored 4 24p HD projects this year) without a hitch.
    Doesn't mean we all wouldn't be happier if they added it in an update. Right Apple? Apple?.... Hello?
    A couple different ones. They work.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   RME FF800, Logic Pro, Sonnox Native Bundle & FCS

  • How to use RM-1500 with a SB Live! USB to control winamp and other ap

    I've been trying several apps (intelliremote, RMX and others) to do this, but no one seems to work properly. Does anyone knows if this is possible? Apparently those apps only work with non-usb sound cards.
    The remote works, but I only can control the volume, mute and CMSS function.

    Hi,
    It can be quite frustrating to program using the DAQmxBase driver. Beaware, that this is just a temporary driver. The next release of the DAQmx driver will include the usb-600x series.
    When this is said, you should be able to use the driver. To make sure that the device is working use one of the examples found by pressing the windows start button > Programs > National Instruments > DAQmxBase > Examples > LabVIEW.
    The examples will give you a good starting point.
    Also I would make sure that I had the newest version of the driver installed. Following link will provide that for you:

  • Best Font for Subtitles? and other General Subtitling questions?

    I've never had to use subtitles, until my current project, so I am looking for some general advice and suggestions.
    I will be using PPCS3 (on XPpro) as the subtitles (as in the kind that translate a foreign language) will be permanent.
    So here are my questions:
    1. What is the best font and or what is the most standard font for subtitles? (Font size and other characteristics may be worth mentioning here too.)
    2. Is it possible to have an outline around the text as opposed to shadow?
    3. What are some general rules of thumb for subtitles that apply to broadcast and cinematic productions?
    Thank you.

  • How to offset speed change in frame rate conforming?

    Hi all. I am conforming video from about 25fps to 30 fps in cinema tools, before editing in FCP. Does any one know of a formula, or calculator tool that would tell me the speed change percentage to use, to get the clip to play in normal speed while editing? Is there a setting to do this automatically in FCP?

    And you needn't speed change the footage at all. Simply cutting 25fps footage into a 30fps timeline will do. If you really desire a formula, to convert 25 fps to 30, you need to run it slower (less frames) so the speed is 25/30 or 5/6ths or 83% - to do it the other way, 30/25 = 6/5ths or 120%.
    But, like I said, if you cut PAL footage into an NTSC timeline, it will adjust the speed appropriately - sizing too...

  • Dreamweaver CC fluid grid controls disappearing and other info

    Hi All,
    I have finally completed my first commercial fluid grid design in Dreamweaver CC and it was a bit of a mission.
    One disconcerting thing about the program is that the fluid grid controls keep disappearing. You know, the ones where you can hide the div, duplicate it, move it up or down, or delete it.
    I have found that when this happens, I need to close the html file I am working on in DW CC and then open it again. The controls then appear again, so you can rearrange your various layouts as demonstrated in those breezy demo videos about DW CC fluid grid layouts.
    So don't just conclude you have broken the code when these controls disappear, try closing and opening the file again first.
    Also you need to insert all the divs you need for all layouts in the mobile phone layout, as that is the main layout, governing all the others because of the way the media queries are set up in the CSS file that is created when you start your fluid grid layout.
    I could not work out how to reorder divs in the different layouts, this may not be possible at the moment. Instead I created divs in the phone layout to cover all of the divs needed in the three layout sizes and switched them off and on in the various layouts. This works really well, but I found that DW behaved strangely if I switched a div off in the mobile layout and then tried to style it in one of the other layouts. So I suggest styling all of the divs first for all the layouts before switching any of them off in the mobile layout.
    Also you can't copy the contents of one div and put them in another without freaking the program out, especially if you are working in a div that is hidden in the mobile layout.
    I suggest saving regularly as you add new divs and style them and view live in a browser immediately, as the preview in DW CC is not reliable. It can't show rounded div corners or shadows for example.
    Keep an eye on the code as it is built by your use of the CSS Properties panel. If it starts going wrong, close the html file without saving it or the attached CSS file. Then go back in and try what you want to do again.
    If you save weird code errors, your work could be so compromised that you need to start all over again. So quit out without saving if you notice this.
    After much experimentation I now insert images into a div, rather than make them a background image, as the background image will not completely show if the content of the div is not long enough. This may require a rethink of your design.
    Doing any absolute sizes in a div will make the responsive design very hard to style and possibly break the code, so I don't suggest it.
    Adding padding to a div can make it stick out of right edge of the design, I am not sure why this is the case and could not work out how to stop it. So use low pixel numbers in the padding of a div.
    Also control z seems to be a sudden death move, so I stopped doing that.
    So my first job has been a bit of a ride, but I seem to be nearly there on my first design.
    I think DW CC is still a work in progress and I look forward to further updates of the software.

    Hi Top Ten,
    You can't get them back once they go. You now need to edit the css code manually to do the same thing.
    For instance if you want divs to sit beside each other you put this in the css for that div:
    clear: none;
    This css means that div will allow other divs to sit beside it.
    Then put in a width in percentages. For example if you have three divs that need to sit beside each other put:
    width: 33%;
    in each of them. Or maybe:
    width: 31%;
    margin-right: 2%;
    Fortunately in DWCC it is now robust enough for you to do those code changes by hand. My original question in this thread was posed when DW CC fluid grid had just come out and crashed easily. A year later all is well, so you can do those changes in the css code without problems now.
    Regards,
    Mary

  • Transfer speed and other minor bits

    First off - I love my iPod (40g Colour) and despite my regular bouts of impatience when updated, loading etc I am very happy with the thing. I even bought my wife a shuffle and she likes that for when she's at the gym. I found the software/hardware to be very forgiving.
    However I thought I'd post a query to see if anybody had any ideas on my minor problems.
    1) When we loaded my wife's shuffle for he first time we had problems with the USB 2 convection. PC keeps saying "this item can run faster connect to a USB2 ....." but it is connected to a USB 2 socket. Now everytime I attach either iPod the same warning comes on (except if I connect before starting!). I know its a USB 2 because a new board was fitted a while ago and my 40g will synch and charge on the connection.
    2) Slow transfer. I recently loaded iTunes 5.0 which didn't work for me (see 3). So I wiped it and loaded a copy of 4.9 (thanks to filehippo). Im up and running again but had to re-synch my iPod to iTunes. The tranfer rate is about 500 tracks per hour so to do the 8500 that my iPod takes needs 17 hours. When its done I should'nt need to do it agin for a while but could I speed things up a bit?
    3)Should I go to iTunes 5.0.1? 5.0 loaded on my PC fine without all teh problems that have filled these oages recently but when in 5.0 I connected either iPod (shuffle or 40G I got an error somthing like "Ipod not recognised re-intall iTunes". I know some other people had a similar problem. iTunes 4.9 is working fine but is it safe for me to try 5.0.1 yet?
    Sorry to go on a bit but I know from watching these forums recently there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people out there so I hope you don't mind my request.

    I've had some news - most of it good. I got fed up with the transfer speed so I took my box into my local store to get it checked out. No visible fault on my USB 2.0! I know it happens but they couldn't replicate it so I went home. Plugged all my stuff in except USB devices. Plugged in my iPod and it worked. I was now thinking about power requirements etc. Plugged in my USB modem and the iPod still updated at USB 2.0 speed. Next I tried my wife's shuffle - so far so good. I then plugged everything in and the iPod defaulted back to USB 1.1!
    Tried the shuffle in the spare USB2.0 socket and it worked. Plugged my iPod in and that worked - Now I knew what the problem was - I only have 3 USB 2.0 sockets (5 USB1.1)and two had faulted.
    Next step will be a new card with a fire wire socket! Happy Days - although I still cant get an extension cord to work with my iPod.
    While I was on a roll I took the bull by the horns and loaded iTunes 6.0. Works like a dream although it is a bit slower than 4.9 - probably considerably bigger but it works!!
    My turn to be the lucky one this week!!! Maybe your turn next.

  • Frame rate question

    i have a specialty piece that has an unusual problem. i'll be needing to
    make a pal version of it. it was originally a film piece, made in the states
    to run at 24fps. the capture and masters i have are set up for domestic
    consumption and are made for 23.976fps. all of the pal conversion tests
    i've run have had significant problems with motion. the piece was originally
    an art installation that was all about motion, persistence of vision, and
    related perceptual phenomena. the best solution i can think of to overcome
    the motion issues is to make the conversion to pal but simply run the 23.976
    file at 25fps. how do i make an m2v file that is, basically a simple copy
    (with the exception of the frame size change to 576) but makes the file run
    at the new 25fps speed? i assume it has to be done through compressor so the
    frame size is addressed, but what settings do i pass to it?
    thanks,
    BabaG

    When you are in the game, hit the tilde key (marked ~), you will likely need to use shift, although I'm not sure on these new fangled games. The tilde key opens the terminal, usually dropping it down from the top of the screen.
    Type in what was given above.
    Then hit tilde again to close out the terminal.

  • Variable Speed and/or Frame-by-Frame Video playback with Waveform synchronization

    I'm using Diadem 2011 to view data recorded in a LabVIEW Module that we have written.  The function of our LabVIEW module is to simultaneously capture video from two infrared cameras and 8 channels of waveform data from a DAQ and record this data to disk.  Data is recorded as two separate AVI files (compressed) and a TDMS file (using TDMS logging).  Using Diadem, I use the video synchronization function to view the TDMS data and video files.  I can scroll a cursor in the waveform data panel and view the video corresponding to the time selected.
    I am looking for two features from Diadem that I am not sure are present: 1) A way to vary the playback speed from real-time.  2) A way to advance the video in a frame-by-frame manner.  If anyone has any suggestions on how I might implement this in Diadem 2011 or can verify that these features are present, I would very much like to know.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Resaebiunne,
    All the functions you are looking for are available in the VIEW toolbar.
    For the frame reverse/forward functions, please make sure that the section with the video inside is highlighted and then use these two buttons. The "Cursor Parameters" icon let's you change the playback speed.
