Controlling the Apple TV
Can you control the apple tv from your iphone/ipad visually like you do itunes on the mac? Or, must you have line of sight to control the apple tv? I ask because i would like to use the apple tv to stream music from itunes match, from any room in the house, without 1) downloading the music to the ipad, then streaming that audio to the apple tv 2) Having to have a computer running an instance of itunes on as well - streaming to the apple tv.
You don't actually need line of sight to make it control the Apple TV since it works over wifi, but you really need to see the Apple TV to know what you are doing unless you are using your iTunes library on your PC, which of course involves having the PC on.

I have lost the original remote for my Apple TV. I went to install it at my fiancés house, and cannot use the remote app on my ipad or iPhone. Can I still control the Apple TV with the apps?

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen. -
There are 5 of us in this house with IPhones and we all want to control the apple tv with our phones. We all have separate iTunes accounts. How do we do this?
I have 3 iPhones in my house and 1 apple tv.
I do NOT set a password on my apple tv, so any iPhone can send video to the tv.
Any iPhone can use the apple remote option also.
Just play a video and click that square with an arrow and play on apple tv. The video comes up from any iPhone in my house.
Same goes for pics, etc -
I have a first generation apple tv and an Iphone 4. I installed remot on my phone, all features work fine except I can't control the apple tv functions such as search movies, internet and other features. I had an earlier version on my 3 Iphone and it worked fine. I have tried everything from reloading the application and nothing seems to add this feature
OK, Problem solved. Software on Apple TV was VERY outdated. It had been sitting in the box for over a year and needed an update. Problem solved!

Finally I realised that my new iPad2 is a DEMO UNIT. That's why I can't control the appl icons. How can I turn this unit like a retail one?

We just wanted to make sure that you did realize that you cannot delete the preinstalled apps and you can't download them again either, so if that was the basis on which you believed that you had a demo model, we were just double checking. -

Could be a hardware problem.
First try a reset which is similar to a computer restart and is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release. -

It is great that remote app can now control direct streaming options to the apple TV (such as apple match, apple radio, and home sharing) but is there any way for the remote app to control the volume?
Note that when I indirectly stream music through an external device (such as an iphone/ipad/laptop), I can of course use an apps volume control (such as, say, spotify, or itunes or whatever), and that works. What i'm talking about here is instances where I'm using the remote app to have the apple TV stream directly from, say, apple radio.
As it stands now, the only way to control the volume in such cases is to control what is receiving the signal from the apple TV (such as an amplifer, or external sound producing device such as powered speakers, etc.).
To make sure this clear to everyone, if I do:
internet -> WIFI LAN -> iphone running, say, spotify -> WIFI LAN via airplay -> Apple TV -> Amplifer
I can control the volume using the spotify app (or even the iphone's volume). This also works if I replace the spotify app with any music app runing
on the iphone (such as the music app). If, however, I try to do the following:
internet -> LAN -> Apple TV -> Amplifer
and where the Apple TV is controled via the latest iphone/ipad remote app so that the Apple TV streams from, say, apple radio directly, there is no way
to control the volume other than to adjust the amplifer.
Thanks very much!The Apple TV has no volume control. When you are streaming from an app you are then controlling the volume on your iphone and transmitting via airplay.

iCloud, iTunes & Apps Stores can be assigned different AppleID's from the Settings app. I have my phone and my wife's set up this way for the very reasons you are describing. Works well.

How do I get the controls for the apple tv to come up on my iTunes?
I used to be able to control the apple tv movies and music from iTunes on my Mac but the little airplay tab never appears in my itunes anymore.
Mac's don't have UI scale options like Windows has.
Either you can drop the screen resolution in Displays a wee bit and make things appear distorted, or do what I do and use the Universal Access and set a control key, then use a mouse wheel/scroll to zoom in and out where the mouse is pointed.

Apple remote is launching itunes instead of controlling the current application
I have a MacMini runnning Lion that I am trying to use as a Media Centre. Obviously no Front Row so I installed XBMC which works ok but Apple Remote failes to control it on a regular basis and launches itunes instead. If I restart the mac then it works ok for a few days but then for no apparent reason it just stops and reverts to only controlling itunes.
Does anyone have an idea why and what I can do to control the Apple Remote more.
I am also running eyeTV.Are you talking about the Apple Remote app (that runs on iOS)? or the physical remote control that used to come with the system?

Just got it and i can control it from everything else including my verizon and sony remotes.

You can control the Apple TV with the supplied remote, the remote app from the app store on an iOS device and compatible programmable remotes, you can't control it from your computer (except for streaming content to it from iTunes) -
What I am trying to do is very simple, and I am sure I have done it before.
I have an Apple TV (2nd Gen) connected to Wifi Network (Airport Extreme 802.11n) I want to stream content from the itunes library on my macbook pro over the wifi network to the Apple TV. This works no problem, home sharing is set up and I can see the itunes library under 'Computer' on the Apple TV interface. I can use the Apple Remote to scroll through and play content from my itunes. Works no problem.
Now I want to use the remote app on my ipad mini to control the apple tv. Using up to date app (Version 3.01) Again, everything looks like it should work. I have turned on Home Sharing on the remote app settings. It works fine and both my itunes library and Apple TV show up on the interface. I can touch the itunes icon and control the itunes on my computer and play music and video on my computer screen.
Now when I touch the apple tv icon I can't see my itunes library content to play on the apple tv. I see the below image. If I tap on the icon in the bottom left it takes me back to the screen in the first image. What is the strangest thing is that I can control the apple tv using the gestures interface! This isn't what I want though and I want to be able to see the itunes library on the screen of the ipad and play it on the apple tv. You can see in the video on this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvEpgcE9KCs). This is what I am trying to do and I just don't understand why I don't get the screen seen at 1:25 in the video. Instead I get the screen seen in the below image. Any ideas? I know that the remote app is connecting to the apple TV because I can control it using gestures, just strange I can't see the content on the ipad like in the attached video clip, instead I see the screen in the image below. Glossary missing in RoboHelp 7 output
