Controlling the volume tone when the Mac boots

Hi,
The tone (or beep?) the Mac makes when it initially boots up appears to be controlled by the internal speaker volume setting. So, if the last thing I did before shutting down was listen to something that was very soft and the volume adjusted high so I could hear it, the next morning when I turn the machine on, I get blasted with a super loud tone. How can I disassociate the tone so that it's not affected by the internal speaker volume setting or better yet, turn it off entirely.
Thanks,
Rob

I have used "StartupSound" pane for more than a year and I warn you it frequently forgets how it is set, blasting you unexpectedly. This seems more of an issue with my iBook, but still happens occassionally with my PowerMac. If anyone reading this has very expensive speakers and an external amplifier, you can add some measure of protection for the speakers by wiring a typical 12 volt automobile dome light bulb in series with one of the leads to each speaker. The bulb is unaffected by low level signal, but at high volume (which might reach two or more amps, depending on the amplifier) the current is dissipated in heat and light. The complex synthesized music chord of the startup sound can be quite powerful.

Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Look up "screen sharing" in help
You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse.  Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
    All users:
Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
    Only these users:
Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen:
Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password:
Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen. It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Tone at power up, then to the "mac-boot" prompt

I inherited this G5 2ghz 20 from a friend who bought the newest 24", and I remember him having the problem I'm now experiencing. When I got it, I completely erased the drive and installed everything fresh, and did not see that problem for 6 months that I've had it.
The last time I powered up, there was a loud tone, then it went straight to command line mode which stated, to continue, type mac-boot. I did that and it booted fine.
Could this be the precursor to something undesirable?

Try running Rember to check for faulty RAM.

  • Confused - when my mac boots the apple comes up

when my mac PowerBook G4 boots the apple comes up like normal but then soon after a grey school appears with the finder icon flashing and then a ? mark after that.
When i tried to restore my computer with the disk it couldn't find the main hard drive. please help and thnx

The Leopard installer may turn off the display, but actually not turn off the machine if you leave it alone in the middle of the installation. If you attempted to force reboot the machine while it was still installing, you may leave your machine in limbo.
Instead, next time you go through an installation after an erase and install from the original discs, simply hold the shift key if the screen goes blank during installation, to ensure it hasn't just gone to sleep.

  • Controlling the Mac with keyboard

Does anyone know of a tutorial or other instructions for how to use the hidden-to-me accessibility features of the Mac? "Full Keyboard Access" is turned on in the Keyboard and Mouse > Keyboard preference pane. Yet there doesn't seem to be a way to navigate the dialog boxes in Apple apps by keyboard.
    Example using Text Edit.
CMD-F calls up the find dialog box but no key combinations seem to activate any of the buttons (i.e. replace all, replace, replace & find, etc.).
CMD-Shift-: [colon key] calls up the spelling dialog box, but no key combination seem to activate the buttons (i.e. ignore, correct, etc.) and worse still there doesn't seem to be a way to close the dialog box (CMD-W doesn't work) and sometimes other shortcuts will get activated even if the spelling dialog is open.
I've searched in Apple Help and the only shortcuts seem to be for turning Universal Access on and off not for moving between the buttons. Thanks.

    p.s.
    I see what you mean.
In Finder help a search of keyboard access, found Full keyboard access for highlighting items which might be usegul to you.
There is in the list also mention of creating custom controls, but I have no experience with that as I use the mouse mostly.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

  • How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

    A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first   Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

  • Help! Mac boot problem!

When my Mac boots, a little bar appears below the apple logo. Then, the bar fills up very slowly. I know the bar isn't the progress of my Mac booting, because after the bar fills up and disappears, the spinning wheel goes on for like another 20 seconds. the Mac actually boots, and there is nothing wrong, but because of the little bar that shows up, my Mac takes 15 minutes to boot, and its a waste of battery and time. Please help me get out of this problem. Thanks!

That means the directory of the boot volume is damaged and a repair is being attempted. If it happens repeatedly, you should assume that there's a hardware fault in the drive, the internal cable, or the logic board. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • E-Mac boots up in black & white ?

When e-mac boots up it appears in black & white with sound.
If re-booted holding shift - p-r keys colour appears but no sound.

    peteww,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Check System Preferences> Universal Access > Seeing tab > Display settings and make sure you don't have 'White on Black" selected (possiblly along with "use greyscale" checkbox selected).
The keyboard shortcut for restting PRAM in command-option-p-r. Shift key restarts in Safe Mode.

  • Why does using a digital connection from headphones out on a Mac into a stereo disable the master volume control on the Mac?

When you use an analog connector, it does not disable the master volume on the Mac. It's only when you use a digital connector, and it's ALL digital connectors. It still allows you to use the iTunes volume control but, when you stream anything else on the web on your computer, you have to use the stereo's volume control because the master volume control on the Mac has been disabled. Does anyone know why?

I had the same problem, instead of logging in the router with the iMac (impossible) I did it with my iPad, I guess you can do the same with an iPhone.
-Disconnect the iPad from your wifi network and connect it to the TP-Link repeater.
-Open the web browser (I use chrome) be sure you don't have any other open tab, just the one to access tptlinkextender.net
-The configuring page opens, from there follow the steps of detecting your network and adding the password.
*If your MAC address is hidden it'll appear without name, in that case you have to configure it manually (write the name on the space for that)
Now go, be happy and do good.

  • TS2570 I have MacBook Air late 2011 with encryption enabled the mac froze so I just shut it down by pressing the power button .But the when I tried  booting the gray screen appeared nothing else

I have MacBook Air late 2011 with encryption enabled the mac froze and I pressed the power button to shut it down but then the gray screen appeared no wheels nothing just gray. I tried all steps but nothing helped. Worse than that only the pram key combination works I cant get the cmd-r or just alt or any combination to work??? Any suggestions would help. Thanks!
P.s. I am on mountain lion with ssd encryption enabled.  The mac froze when the internet stopped the one from the cable (I use ethernet usb one) when I turned wifi on it froze.  I have disconnected everything when trying the steps except power cable.

Boot into Internet Recovery (command-option-R at the startup chime) and try to repair the boot volume in Disk Utility. You will have to unlock the volume before you can do anything with it.

  • I started Boot Camp on a MAC mini but then  had a power failure after 30 secs :( Now when I start Boot Camp the option to install Windows 7 is gone.  In it's place is Remove Windows 7.  It seems to hang at Partitioning disk  Can I recover?

I started Boot Camp on a MAC mini but then  had a power failure after 30 secs Now when I start Boot Camp the option to install Windows 7 is gone.  In it's place is Remove Windows 7.  It seems to hang at Partitioning disk  How can I recover?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

  • I can access internet via boot camp with windows 7, but not when I use the Mac w/Mt Lion side. Thanks for any tips!

I'm using a 2012 Intel-based iMac with Mt. Lion and Windows 7 with Boot Camp. I used to be able to access the internet on both sides. Now, my only internet access is through Boot Camp. At one point, access was unable on both sides but IE in Windows 7 automatically diagnosed the problem, changed some settings (which I don't know) and I could access the internet on both sides . . . for a while. Now, I can only get online in Boot Camp. Since IE detects no problems it doesn't apply the fix as it did before. Does anybody know what's going on?
I should mention that I installed Boot Camp because there is no Mac version of the software (VantagePoint)  I need to use (duh).  I wanted to be able to use the software w/o rebooting all the time so I installed Fusion. Of course, I didn't ask the VantagePoint techs if this would solve my issue. It didn't - VantagePoint won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels. So I installed Parallels and imported Boot Camp. Apparantly, it was not set up properly, I'm getting all kinds of errors reported in Console (e.g. "Found cross-bounds GPT partition. GPT disk detected," mdworker cannot talk to sandbox, etc.).  The VantagePoint techs say the first step in a VM retry is to regain internet access to the Mac.
Anybody who can help will become my new best friend. Thanking you.

Are you using a MacBook Pro? Is everything installed on the same drive?
I would love to know how that install was performed. When I install Windows under boot camp, my MacBook Pro drive ends up with 4 partitions: Mac, Mac Recovery, Windows, and a small partition that I believe is used by boot camp.
Installing BitLocker on Windows requires the creation of a new small partition that Windows will boot off. The small partition is unencrypted, while the primary Windows partition will get encrypted. The following post discusses the maximum partition issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22753791#22753791
Has anyone installed Windows through boot camp on it's own drive, and if so, can BitLocker be installed on that without reaching any partition limit? I'm assuming that's possible, but would like to know before I spend hundreds on new hardware.

  • How can I force mount a dvd that isn't even seen by Disk Utility? I can see it on the Mac when using my Windows 7 partition via Boot Camp, but not in Lion, which is how I would rather be running.

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.
