Controlling Wireless by Time of Day

Is there anyway to restrict access to an Airport by the time of day for a specific computer? Specifically I want to prevent one computer on my Airport network from accessing the Internet between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, but allow the other two access during this time.
MacBook, PowerBook G4, iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Currently no - but this will be available in the new AEBS. The timed access will be based on MAC address I believe, similar to the currect access control set up. I've been waiting for the manual to be released for download to confim before ordering as I already have older AEBS that does the job (with the exception of timed access of course).

• Printing a control panel at a specific time of day automatically

I would like to be able to print out a control panel at a set time each day. I know that I can connect the print data member of the panel to another object. What should that object be?
Thanks

Try the "Time-Of-Day" object. Its parameters are on/off, Offset time, duration time and format (all parameters are “yellow” fields except format, which means you can use other object data members). On/off lets you disable the timer, offset time is when in the day to activate the timer (i.e. 17:00:00 for 5:00 PM), duration time is how long to pulse the timer (to tickle a panel to print you would only need 00:00.1) and anything would do for format if you don't intend to display the timer (00:00:00 would be appropriate if you display the timer). Connect the Time-of-day object implicit data member to the panel object writable print data member and you are done. When the offset time is the current time the time-of-day object pulses and the panel prints. Be aware that the area of the panel that prints is based on the Height and Width parameter values, not the position on the screen (the X and Y data members override the parameters if connected). There is more info on timers and panels in the on-line help.

• I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day). The green light will go amber but the internet service (ethernet cable) will still be fine. The wireless icon on devices with go away.

I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day) The green light will go amber, but the internet service is still ok if your using an ethernet cable directly plugged in. When the light goes amber all devices that is using wireless will lose there wireless icon. The only way to get the green light back is to unplug the Airport device and replug it back in. I tried the reset on the back but still no luck. What is the fix?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
Correct?
See this Apple document:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

• Is there an app that can control the ringer volume by the time of day?

Is there an app that can control the ringer volume by the time of day. Like say i had work. Is there an app that can automaticly change the ringer volume on certain days at times you input to lower the ringer volume?

Can a app like this be made or will apple not allow it?

• Airport keeps dropping the wireless connection to my network 2 or 3 times a day.

Hi,
Since apple's recent firmware update for my macbook pro, airport keeps dropping the wireless connection to my network 2 or 3 times a day. It then searches for a network but can't find it, but if I select my network manually it connects immediately ???
Any fixes for this ..... in layman's language please!
Thanks,
Steve

It is not the router. There are a number of factors that are involved. If the router is a G/N router you may have to switch to G-Only (or disable N). You may also have a 5 GHz wireless phone or other routers in the neighborhood interfereing with the signal.
Try this:
1. Open network preferences. Take note of what IP address is assigned. Then, click Advanced.
2. Click on TCP/IP and select Using DHCP with manual address and type the IP address below that.
3. Click OK.
4. Set your Router to Wireless-G only (or disable N) and change the channel to 11 or some higher number.
This should keep it from dropping the wireless connection. It is a bug in the OS. Apple has not fixed it in 3 years.
You wireless connection will be a tad slower, but you really won't notice.
Hope that helps.

• Wireless 5508 controller - Guest Wlan time of day restrictions ?

Looking to add time of day restrictions to our Guest WLAN that is currently in its pilot phase.
Is there a way to config time of day access to a WLAN ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Dave

Dave,
There is nothing in the controller that allows you to do this... However you can achive this in a few manners..
1) Time ACL on the vlan. But your guest ssid will still be shown.
2) If you have WCS you can schedule a WLAN enable/disable with a template. This is what some of my customers use. They will create a template that triggers at 6pm to disable the wlan and at 7am enable the wlan.
I hope this helps.

• Help! I need to restrict wired access by time of day to limit XBOX 360 use

AirPort Extreme N allows timed access restriction for wireless clients, but Apple bewilderingly decided not to make this feature available to "wired" clinents that access the network via ethernet cable. *This permits our teenagers to play XBOX all night long.* HELP! Which third-party vendor makes wired routers that I can use to restrict this access by time of day. NOTE: I will need a router that still supports AppleTalk over ethernet to keep my HP LaserJet working. I tried a LinkSys router but it killed the AppleTalk packets and wreaked havoc with print jobs sent to the HP. I also want to keep the AirPort Extreme N in the network and use it as the sole DHCP server (I specifically need its ability to reserve private IP addresses for some devices), so this complicates where in the network I place the third-party router. Where should this router be, if I need the AirPort Extreme N to serve as DHCP server, and do I need to change any other setting like bridge mode, etc? _I just can't believe Apple would only allow timed access restrictions for wireless clients._ Come on! Maybe this will be fixed in a firmware update?

Thanks, Duane. I was just looking at the PDF instructions for this router, and it offers extensive control of wired time access by IP number.
So: If I (1) put this Belkin device at the top of my network chain, between my cable modem and my AirPort Extreme; and I (2) turn off the DHCP server in the Belkin device but turn on the DHCP server in the AirPort router; and I (3) use the AirPort Extreme to assign a reserved IP adddress to the XBOX; and I (4) use this reserved IP address to restrict the XBOX access by time of day via the Belkin router software... Everthing will work OK?
Seems awfully complicated. Basically, I would be using the Belkin router only as high-octane network switch -- one that permits timed access resrictions for devices at specific IP addresses (and handshakes with the cable modem to provide a unique MAC address to the cable company). Right?

• Just installed Mavericks and my computer crashes 4-5 times a day now.

Hi. Just a few days ago I finally gave in and upgraded to Mavericks (10.9.5) from 10.6.8 as there was some software that I needed to use that necessitated the upgrade. Since I've upgraded, my MacBook Pro crashes at least 4-5 times daily. I am not doing anything unusual when it occurs. Usually typing an email, or switching between tabs in Safari or clicking save on a word file. In another post I was introduced to an app called Etrecheck which seemed to me to be a fine way to show all the Mac geniuses on this forum whats going with my computer (unfortunately I am not savvy enough to look through it and understand what's going on). I've posted the report below. Maybe someone can help me figure out what's causing my computer to crash?
The next time it happens I can also copy the report that shows up after the crash and post it as well. Many thanks in advance.
Problem description:
Since I downloaded Mavericks (10.9.5) my computer crashes randomly 4-5 times per day.

• Can I set multiple iCal alarms to play iTunes 4 times a day?

I would like it to play an iTune at 4 different times during the day (upon my AM Kdg class' arrival/cleanup time and again upon the PM Kdg class' arrival/cleanup time, for instance).
Is this possible or am I stuck with only 1 alarm capability?
(I don't want to buy a cd alarm clock - that's just another thing to plug into the wall. I want my iMac to work FOR ME!)

Hi,
I've been browsing the discussion forum and you seem quite knowledgeable.
Regarding the question about triggering event alarms several times a day
do you know if there's any way to modify the "repeat" menu to repeat tasks hourly (rather than typing in a specific time). I have a bunch of scripts I'd like to execute every hour, four hours a day, for a month. I'm using ical to control a sound installation in an art show.
Thanks for your help.
Francesco

• Infinity HH5 keeps rebooting multiple times a day

Hello.
I have had normal broadband on the HomeHub3 with no problems for 3 years, BUT I upgraded to Infinity (with HomeHub5) 10 days ago. Ever since I have been on Infinity and the HomeHub5 I get multiple connection problems a day (HH5 goes orange, then back to blue a minute later).
Unfortunately the phone contact I have had with BT has not resolved the issue, so I have come to the forum in the meanwhile, please can someone resolve my problem?
The event log data from HH5>troubleshooting, shows the following data:

remember this connection failure is happening between around 10-40 times per day.
I have read multiple other posts but the only answer seems to be to install an openreach modem, but BT infinity should work with a HH5, I don't want to be told to buy more equipment please.
I have read: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/02/04/bt_home_hub_5_disconnection_mystery/
and BT's response to that: https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/BT-Home-Hub-5A-dropping-connection-updates/...
How do I know if my HH5 has that configuration fix? I know my firmware number is the same, but it doesn't mean that I have received that configuration fix for that firmware version... is the whole problem because CWMP: Server URL: https://pbthdm.bt.mo; Connecting as user: ACS username is trying to install that configuration fix but it never completes it?
I have read: https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/restarts-every-33minutes-speed-fine-sync-al...
Can a MOD install this configuration fix for me please?

I have been told by BT over the phone that there is no phone line fault (and when doing the phone line noise test I cannot hear any crackling).
I just want my internet to not drop out, please can someone explain why it is dropping out and resolve it please?

1. any ideas what the cause was?
2. ok I will find a way to unscrew the front plate and leave it plugged in to the test socket, and see if it goes down again.
3. what is the definition of internal wiring? I imagine it includes filters, but what else exactly?
Cheers again.

• Since upgrading to Firefox 6 my computer has gone from staying up until yearly power failures to crashing many times a day.

VERY strange. I upgraded to 6 when it came out and it took me quite a few days later to figure out WHY I went from no crashes to nvidia driver crashes MANY times a day.
It was firefox 6.0.
I thought my nvidia drivers were out of date. They were one version behind so I upgraded. Crash.
I thought maybe some kernel interaction might be an issue so I compiled up the latest Linux 3.0.3 and re-installed the nvidia drivers.
Still crash. Took me a few more days to realize the only thing that changed on my system was Firefox. I usually upgrade without thinking.
I switched to Opera. Not a single crash in a week. So it is Firefox. I dug and dug and dug on google and found a remote reference to some acceleration added in 6. I disabled it. It still crashes. I have moved back to Firefox 5 and have run all day without a crash.
My computer at home runs about a dozen web sites, 2 X servers on separate consoles (one for standard browsing and all other functions and one for World of Warcraft gaming - I like to keep them separate), FTP, TeamSpeak server ver 2 & 3, NFS for terrabytes of media files, lets just say many things. Firefox 6 killed me.
What more info do you need. Sorry I pasted ver 5 Troubleshooting Info, but I need a special request before I run anything greater than 6 on this system again. I will do it if needed but I will need a reboot to prevent all these kernel/video driver crashes.
ONLY when I run Firefox 6. After some small usage (while watching xine videos or web browsing youtube, playing WoW, or who knows what) the screen FLASHES and I know a freeze is eminent. If I can get one last xterm up I can dmesg and see these messages or if I log in with my android phone via SSH. I still have control of the system just no display. I can reboot there or Alt-Sysrq Sync, Unmount, Boot to restart my system many times a day.

That is probably rather unlikely. The updates are released ''throttled'' initially to a portion of users so that any major problems will be picked up before everyone gets it.
It is also run through a staged procedure releasing as six weeks each in Nightly -> Aurora -> Beta versions. Although some code change will occur in that process. The Releases also must also pass automated testing.
Once the Release happens then we can look for problems showing up from: the crash reporter, the input feedback, telemetry, and comments on this forum.
Problems do and always will get through but it is unlikely a problems causing Firefox not to start would go unnoticed unless it only affected a vanishingly small proportion of users (nearly 1/2 Billion total),and then it would possibly be because of specific hardware or interactions with other software.

Presumably you installed the conduit plugin deliberately and like it. A simple web search suggests many users may be unhappy with that software. Search

• My iPhone5 has terrible Network connection. It rarely works at the normal speed-if ever. I usually get 3G or 1x network dozens of times a day. My phone also gets pretty hot when i try to use any data for more than a few minutes.

My iPhone5 network connection has been terrible for the past week and a half. My phone is no more than a year old so I don't see why it would be a problem with the phone. When I try to use the internet or look for apps or anything like that, anything that uses data really, it takes FOREVER if it even loads! Most of the time it won't even load. My network changes from LTE(which doesn't work well) to 3G(which works even less) and then to 1x(which basically doesn't work at all). This happens dozens of times a day. It's getting quite irritating. I've tried turning my phone off and letting it sit for a while and that does nothing. I'd really prefer NOT to restore my phone. What is the deal??!

Are you broadcasting your SSID? Sometimes this can cause a problem connecting. Is this Cisco router running any turbo modes or special preparatory protocols.
There are no know issues with Wi-Fi connectivity except on first connection; and the chance of 2 devices having the exact same issue is very unlikely. This sounds like something to do with your wireless router.
Have you tried to connect to another Wi-Fi hotspot elsewhere?
Do you have any 2.4 GHz wireless phones or security system that could interfere with connection?

• Cisco RV120W crashed several times a day

Hello,
we are using the Cisco RV120W for our little network. The latest firmware (1.0.4.10) is installed!
But the router crashes about 6-10 times a day and have to be restarted. The Web Interface is also not available then.
It is configured as the subnet 192.168.12.0/24
The WAN connection is a static ip to a public subnet.
VLAN 1 is the default LAN (see above).
DHCP is enabled in that network and DNS proxy is disabled.
VLAN 2 is 192.168.10.12 whitout DHCP.
Ethernet Port 1 is configured as VLAN 2 for another subnet (192.168.10.0/24 from another router).
The other ports an WLAN are using VLAN 1 (192.168.12.0/24).
WLAN authentication is enabled (SSID 1) with a WPA2-PSK password.
After i reboot the router the logs are empty and i just can see the logs while the router is running.
after about 30 minutes i copied the logs from the router:
These are the "error" logs:

This sounds like you may have a faulty unit. I'd recommend opening a case with STAC to troubleshoot or RMA the device. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful day!

• IMac Retina has started shutting down several times a day, generating a "Panic Report".

Although I have had a new iMac Retina since October, it is only within the past few weeks that I have started trying to use it for most purposes. Initially, it seemed to be working OK. But during the past week, it has started to do peculiar things, such as:
1. Now, several times a day, it shuts down unexpectedly. When I boot it back up, it displays a message saying that it was shut down because of a problem. Then, when I click on the window for a report of the problem, it generates a long “Panic Report”.
2. When it boots back up, it automatically opens several windows that I did not have open when it shut down — Safari, Firefox, Excel, Word, etc.
3. I have 2 external 1gb drives connected for data, and 2 external 4gb drives connected for Time Machine backups. All of the drives have been formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, although Finder originally showed all 4 of those drives, Finder now always omits a particular one of the 1gb drives. Yet, iDrive and Time Machine continue to recognize all 4 drives.
4. Several times over the past week, it suddenly popped up a “Jabber" window containing a long transcript of a series of iPhone texts that I exchanged in January. However, I never installed Jabber (to my knowledge), and it doesn’t show as currently installed on any of my devices.
I just ran EtreCheck, and this is the report:
Problem description:
New iMac with Yosemite has started to shut down itself several times a day, generating a Panic Report.
EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)

• HP ENVY m6 Notebook PC overheats several times per day

My laptop overheats and crashes CONSTANTLY—several times per day! I have vacuumed all of the vents in back, I took it to the Geek Squad, who sold me a chill pad that helps minimally, I have started putting ice packs on the lower left corner, I don't take it outside, anymore. There is nothing that keeps this laptop cool enough for me to use like a laptop and take it where I need it. It started doing this about 6 months ago.
It's sitting on the chill pad right now, getting hotter and hotter (everywhere to the left of the letter i). Also, the adapter gets so hot, it makes me think it might be a fire hazard. It seems to overheat slower when it runs off the battery, which seems to be the only thing that doesn't get hot.
What do I do about this? I don't want to get another laptop; this one is only a year and a half old.

It likely needs to be opened up and cleaned out around the processor/heatsink and new thermal compound applied. I am understanding that the battery does not heat up? What if you let it run down and then recharge it with the laptop on? Does the battery get hot during that process? It does not heat up as much on battery power because the processor has been "throttled back" to save battery life so that tells us the heat is likely coming from the processor. You can set the processor to run at 97 or 98% power even when plugged in and this helps a lot but should not be seen as a permanent fix. Go into power options in Control Panel and get to advanced.
Set maximum processor state plugged in to 98% and see if that does not help.
