Conversion from iPhoto (oh, not again)

Before asking my question let me start by thanking all the regular contributors to the Aperture forum, and in particular Terence Devlin, Kirby Krieger and Frank Caggiano. Your posts have been more valuable to me than any book I bought or any course I followed on Aperture.
Just as a background: both me and my wife are avid photographers, but no professionals. We've been using iPhoto until now, but decided to change to Aperture. Over the last months we've worked over the APTS training book, played with Aperture, read up a lot on forums and now we believe we're ready to switch.
I have a few questions on iPhoto import, RAW conversion and workflow. I intend to post them post them one by one over the coming weeks. I'm not so much looking for solutions to problems, but more about your opinions on the best way to follow based on you experiences.
My first question is on iPhoto import. I understand all the technicalities but I'm looking for your recommendations on what approach to take for the following situation:
- We both have separate iPhoto libraries, each around 5.000 images, although around 80% of the images are the same.
- 50% of the images are high-quality JPEGs, 30% Nikon RAW, 20% scanned TIFFs.
- Around 20% of these images, in general the JPEGs, have been edited in iPhoto, mainly red eye correction, cropping, faces and places. Almost all the editing has been done in a single library.
- Images are organized using iPhoto events (which are named identically across the two libraries).
- Within iPhoto the images have been renamed using the Event names.
What I would like to to achieve:
- Consolidate our 2 iPhoto libraries into a single Aperture library and get rid completely of the iPhoto libraries.
- Keep the highest quality version of every image. If this means iPhoto edits and metadata are lost, so be it. If these can be maintained, nice.
- Avoid having to go through an endless process of de-duplication.
My gut feeling says to consolidate the two libraries in iPhoto and after that move the whole library to Aperture. What do you think?
Many thanks,
Eric

The only way to consolidate the two libraries in iPhoto is with the Paid version of iPhoto Library Manager ($20)
This process can be set to void duplicates, so you end up with a single iPhoto Library and no dupes.
The dialogue for importing an Aperture Library has a setting to avoid duplicates, but I'm not sure if it will recognise MyiPhotoLibrary_Pic1 as a dupe of YouriPhotoLibrary_Pic1 - but it's worth a try. If it goes pear shaped just trash the Library and start over.
Finding edited versions from iPhoto is really easy: they're tagged 'iPhoto Edited' so you can find and trash them with a simple smart album.

  • I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1. My  photos from iPhoto will not open in camera raw

I just installed elements 11 with camera raw 7.1 in my iMac. My raw photo files from iPhoto will not open in camera raw. The elements screen opens without a photo, but camera raw willnot open. Help.

You need to tell iphoto to send raw files out of iphoto or it will make its own conversion and send a pre-converted file. Go to the iphoto preferences>advanced and turn on this checkbox:

Connect your device, then select your device. The several tabs will now appear on the right.

  • TS3276 from iphoto can not share photos via email

error message says "The email server didn’t recognize your username/password combination."
had previously been able to share photos from iphoto via email.  Did not change any settings and cant do so now.
    Help

When I try to share photos via email, iPhoto says the server does not recognize the username/password combination.
Use your iCloud Mail account, when mailing from iPhoto and not email or similar. Sending using iPhoto as Mail client is more robust, if the send "From" in the outgoing mail is set to your iCloud account.

  • Photos albums from iphoto will not show in iweb media section

    Hello
I have 2 issues. Photo albums that I created in Iphoto will not show in the Iweb media section. Also, all of the photos from half the Photo pages go missing after I update and republish to my site. They still show on the site but the photos are not longer showing in Iweb and have to be added back to the photo pages.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
    1 - close iWeb.
2 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
3 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    4 - reboot.
5 - launch iWeb and try again.

  • Cannot email from iPhoto: internet not connected message

I am using the latest version of iPhoto and also have just upgraded to Yosemite, though this problem has existed forever and I am just now at my limit of tolerance.
I get a message that says my internet is not connected or working properly; completely false btw.  I have tried deleting my accounts in iPhoto and reinstalling them to no avail.
    What do I do?

I could have sworn that I had chosen the options you suggested in the first place.  I did change to select Mail as the app and after your message, I tried once again to select iPhoto as the email app and yes, my iCloud account was at the top of the account list in iPhoto.  This time the email from iPhoto worked perfectly.
As they say in NYC..."Go figure"
    Thanks for the help

  • Some photos from iPhoto are not appearing in iMovie

I have successfully imported over 2,000 pictures from iPhoto into iMovie. However, my latest attempt did not work- these photos were from a CD scanned by somebody else. The photos are in iPhoto, but when I pull up the folder in iMovie, it is blank.
    Any idea why??? Thanks.

You should be able to tell in iPhoto. If not, right click on the photo in iPhoto and select "Reveal in Finder". You should see the file. Right click on it and select "Get Info"

  • Changes in Picturealbums from Iphoto is not updated within Itunes/ATV

I would like to choose what picture albums from IPhoto that should be synchronized to AppleTV. But the AppleTV tab within Itunes does not update with the new albums that I have created in Iphoto. Anyone has an idea how I can force Itunes to refresh the list of shared albums from Iphoto ?
I've tried reboot everything there is after I made my changes

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Could there be any photos with file types not supported by the tv in these albums. Or any illegal characters such as "/" in any of the album names, file names or even keywords or descriptions. Have you tried rebuilding your iphoto library.

  • Lightroom: Capture time for videos imported from iphoto is not showing in metadata

Hi, I imported all my photos and videos from iphoto to Lightroom recently using the iphoto import plugin.  I think all my photos were imported but I noticed that all my videos have no capture time, so they became grouped together in my collections.  But I think I can still see their capture time in the "grey text" in each photo.  Why did this happen and how do I resolve this issue?  I really want my capture times to be in the video metadata and also want to see my videos in the right chronological order with my videos.   Strangely, videos imported into Lightroom directly from my camera SD card do not have this issue, only the ones imported from iphoto do.  Thanks!

LR does not properly handle video metadata in general, and in particular it often botches capture time.  Sometimes this works:  Select one video, do Metadata > Edit Capture Time, and then click Change All (without actually changing Corrected Time).  If that sets the capture time to the correct time, then you can select all the problem videos, do Metadata > Edit Capture Time, and click Change All.   If you have a small number of videos, you can manually correct the capture time using Edit Capture Time.
Please see this thread in the official Adobe feedback forum for more details, vote on it, and add your opinion: Lightroom: Metadata applied to videos in Lightroom isn't available in other applications

  • When using time machine with external hardrive to backup, some music items from iTunes and some photos from iPhoto do not transfer to backup hardrive.  What am I ding wrong?  Using latest version of mountain lion.

When I use time machine with my external harddrive to back up computer, some music from iTunes library, and some photos from iPhoto library are missing when I check backup disk.  I am using latest version of mountain lion.  Am I doing something wrong?

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Iphone 5 videos from iPhoto will not import into FCP

Just bought FCP X and tried to import movies from iPhoto taken with my iPhone 5 and get a message that the file format is not supported.  Any suggestions?

To late.  The videos were downloaded into iPhoto and removed from the iPhone.  I actually exported the videos to my desktop then imported them into FCPX without any problem.  It would seem to me that I should be able to import directly.  The video format (in iPhoto) is supported according to the apple web sight.  Any thoughts?

  • Email sent from iphoto is not listed in sent file

I use an iphoto template to share pictures in iphoto email. The emails are being received but they do not show up in my sent file so I can not check to be sure they were actually sent. I can't figure out why ????

iPhoto doesn't have a "sent file". Simply, emailing from iPhoto is a handy way to send pics to Grandma, it's not a substitute for an email client.
You can bcc yourself automatically. It's an option in the iPhoto Preferences.

  • MJPEG movies from iPhoto could not be opened by PC's

My contacts with PC's could not open MJPEG movie attachment from e-mails in spite of downloading QuickTime Payer for Windows. Any suggestions?

Where are these movies coming from?  What created them?  How does this involve iPhoto as iPhoto will not email movie files?
What version of iPhoto are you using?
