Conversion to DNG in LR alters settings to worse

After adjusting the images to the desigered look (exposure, recovery, fill light and midtone contrast) I converted to DNG using the build in LR conversion. Most of the images look the same, but about 1/4 of the images have become dull and grayish looking.
I see that LR have sett every setting to zero on these pictures, and the only way of recovery is the readjust the picture. The changes to the bad have also affected the embedded JPEG version.
I have experienced this two times before. Are there any way of salvation, so I can avoid readjusting the images?
I am also interested in, why this happens in LR, is the DNG converter bad in ver. 1.0 or is it simply the DNG format I should avoid and sti ck with the Canon CR2 RAW format?
Kind regards
Klaus

Just found out, that if you in the develop mode selects "copy before's setings to after" then the damage is restored. It is almost like LR is looking at the alteration it has done when converting to the DNG as a user requested operation (not the dng conversion but the alteration of colours and so forth)
This doesn't particually make be comfortable using the DNG instead of Canons CR2.

  • RAW + old photoshop generated .XMP file conversion to DNG

I have a set of camera raw files (.mos) and .xmp side car files that were generated in photoshop several years ago. I am thinking about converting all of the files and side cars to DNGs because Leaf Capture software is no longer being updated.
Before I do I want to confirm that Lightroom can read both the raw AND the corresponding side car files and convert them into single dngs. I also want to know if the .xmp information is extractable after the dng is created in the same way that the raw/original file is extractable.
I've been trying to test lightrooms ability to read .xmp files on my own. I added a .mos file in a folder with a corresponding .xmp file and a .mos file in a folder without a corresponding .xmp file. Lightroom reads similar adjustment information for both images but only generates a preview that more closely resembles a finished retouched .PSD of the added .mos file that does not have the .xmp file in the folder it was added from. I'm at a bit of a loss regarding how to proceed.

Upate on situation: I followed up with the individuals that created the files and found out that the side car files were in fact generated by leaf and not photoshop. i tried another test and it looks like the folder with a .mos +.xmp file is now reading differently than a .mos file by itself. both suggest that changes were made to the files with modulations in the "develop" section of lightroom.
You can view the XMP file data in Notepad or any other text editor, just select 'Open' and select 'All File Types' so you can see the XMP files. It should be possible to store both C1 and LR develop settings in the same XMP file, but there may be some naming conflcts. Review of an XMP file with both C1 and LR develop settings saved to it should show the two different develop data sets in Notepad. Conversion to DNG should save ALL XMP data, but you may lose some of the (edit) Leaf proprietary data that may be in the raw file's metadata. For now I'd hold onto the raws + XMPs, even if you do convert to DNG.
You can use EXIFtoolGUI to examine the metadata in the new DNG files and compare it to the original XMP file's data. My Canon DSLRs appear to have all of the manufacturer's 'Makers Notes' copied over from the raw file into the DNG metadata.

Using the same Ethernet cable that is used to connect the modem to the AirPort Extreme, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme and connect it directly to your Mac as a test for 4-6 hours.
Be sure to power off the modem for 5-10 minutes when you do this, so that it will associate with the new device that it "sees".
Does the connection drop when you connect this way? If yes, then replace the Ethernet cable and run the test again for 4-6 hours.
If the connection still drops, you likely have a defective modem or a line problem on the cable service....despite what the cable company might say.
If the connection remains solid when you run the "test", then you know that the modem and Ethernet cable are working correctly.
If you have performed a factory default reset on the AirPort Extreme a few times, and connection still drops, then you should take the AirPort to an Apple Store....if you have one near you..... to let them take a look, or contact Apple Support directly.

  • Import & conversion to .dng issue

When I import .CR2 (Canon RAW files) into LR4 and convert them to .dng I get a yellow cast and all of the settings have changed. I can use "Reset" and it gets the original back. I have not changed any import settings-any ideas?

  • Mac: No preview in the Finder after conversion to DNG

    Mac OS 10.6.8
    Lightroom 4.4
My Ricoh GR creates DNG files that have previews in the Finder. But because the file sizes are big (and I don't need them so big), in Lightroom I reconvert them to Lossy DNG (using compatibility with Camera Raw 7.1 or later). Now, after this conversion, these new DNGs don't have any previews in the Finder anymore.
So, the problem must be with the DNG converter in Lightroom!

I was going to refer you to this thread but then I saw you were the original poster there also.

  • Move some dng files (and their settings)

I like to review photos with the client on my laptop/Apple TV. So I make all the stars, flags, labels on the laptop. When I copy the dng files to a thumbdrive and copy them from the LR import dialog into my desktop/different catalog - they come in missing all the metadata.
I assumed the reason to use DNG was that there wasn't a need for sidecar xmp files. I assume that somehow I need to tell LR to "bake" the settings into the files because they're only the database?

Are you using Lightroom or other Adobe on your client’s computer or Apple TV to rate the photos?  It is up to whatever app you’re using to rate the photos to write the data into the DNG.  Depending on what app it is, it may not know what to do with DNGs enough to do that.

  • Single Raw file conversion to .dng

Sorry if this has been asked but I can't find any tutorial on .cr2 file to .dng file conversion.  I usually shoot RAW+jpeg on my Canon 50d.   I am using CS3 and understand the need to convert my Canon Raw to the Adobe Dng format for PS processing. I downloaded and installed the free dng converter.  I just can't seem to find a way to convert a SINGLE raw file into a SINGLE .dng file, it only wants a whole folder full for conversion.  And am I correct in that Adobe isn't writing a plugin to let CS3 do the conversion?  Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

You could copy the single CR2 file into a folder all by itself, then run the DNG converter on it.  And I'm not completely sure, but I think I've heard of the ability for the tool to convert a lone file by providing the file path on a command line.  Thus you could drag a single file to the DNG Converter icon if you had it on the desktop.
And you're correct - you're not going to get new camera support in the Camera Raw 4.x series that works with Photoshop CS3.  Adobe stops adding new camera support when a new major version of Photoshop is released.  But they do provide the (less convenient) DNG Converter for free.

  • NEF conversion to DNG

Is there a maximum number of raw files that can be converted to DNG in one operation in Lightroom 5.
I can convert multiple folders with about 100 files OK, but if I try to convert 3000+ files over night Lightroom stalls.
Also when Lightroom is set to delete the raw file after conversion should it also delete the sidecar file.

I don't know of a limit, I suspect the hardware, OS, RAM and other factors play a role. Yes, the sidecar files will eventually be deleted in my experience but it's not instantaneous by a long shot.

  • Missing stuff/altered settings after clearing cache

So I wanted to clear up disk space by clearing up the cache. I had not done this before so I did it for the first time. I cleared up the caches from both the main Macintosh HD device and my user name. I went to the Library folder, then to the cache folder, selected all, and put all the stuff in the Trash and emptied it. Then I re-started my computer.
The problem is, after I restarted I noticed that some things were missing. All my desktop images were gone. Even though they were all the default images that came with the computer, I liked the default space image. The color of the menu bar on top (where you see the apple icon, file, edit , ect.) changed from the default light gray color to now a light blue color. I tried to change the color by going to system preferences and then to appearances. But I only have two choices, Blue and Graphite. When I change to Graphite, there is no difference. Also, all my widgets are gone. I tried to look for those widgets but can't find them on the apple website.
What I did to try to fix this problem, I inserted the applications install CD that came with the computer and re-installed the applications but the stuff was still missing. I have not tried to re-install  MAC OS X because right now I don't have a way to backup my files. For those who cleared their cache like I did; did anybody have things missing? And how can I delete the cache without affecting the settings of my computer??

Deleting the cache files shouldn't have had the effects you describe, so I don't know what really happened. What I do know is that you should do no more work with the computer until you have a backup solution in place. Without it, you are inevitably going to lose all your data, and there will be nothing anyone can do to help you. Shut down the computer now. Don't turn it on again until you're ready to connect an external hard drive and activate Time Machine or some other backup software.

  • Alter settings pdf after original save?

Using adobe acrobat 7.0 professional on mac.
I scanned something recently, saved it as a pdf. Upon the first time saving (every time with first save of new document) I had the options. To save as 5 version or later all that stuff! Once it has been saved as a pdf. no longer these options are available. When when using the command 'save as' and under the format drop-box 'format as pdf', to the right there is 'settings' button. Though this is faded and not available to select. It is available when saving it as other filetypes.
How can I format my document so it can send to windows?
Having trouble emailing to windows systems as they can't open.

    Go in menu: Advanced>PDF Optimizer...
It will give you different settings to change, and after will take you with those settings to "Save as..." dialog box.
But I did not figure out so far what to do if I want to replace the previous settings to the new ones permanently. Where this change of "standart" preset to "custom" may be done?

  • Blue Cast on CR2 conversion to DNG

I'm wondering if anyone can explain why CR2 files from a Canon 1D Mark II exhibit a strong blue cast when converted to DNG using the standalone Adobe DNG converter version 5.5.0.97 or Lightroom 2.5. (see examples below).
Here's the test I conducted:  I first shot a JPEG image of an X-Rite grey card using Auto White Balance then used it to set a custom white balance in my 1D Mark II.  I then repeated the same test using a RAW file and in both instances the camera functions as expected.  However, when I converted the CR2 files to DNG they took on a strong blueish cast.
For comparison purposes I then did the same test using a Canon 5D and those CR2 files do not show the blueish cast when converted to DNG.
Here's a shot of the thumbnails as they appear in BreezeBrowser Pro (thumbnail color management enabled).  They look the same in Adobe Bridge too.  The first six thumbnails are from the Canon 1D Mark II and the second six are from the Canon 5D.
    Thanks for any help.

The only thing wrong with your DNG is that the embedded preview was created with the WB set to something like Tungsten while the DNG metadata parameters say As Shot for the WB.  How it got that way you're going to have to figure that out.  I say this because both LR and Br show a brief blue flash when the image is initially imported, then it corrects to the As Shot WB.  This means the preview is bad but the parameters are ok.
I'm going to guess you had the DNG open in LR and clicked or synced it to something like Tungsten from some other image, and then created the DNG with the preview, then corrected the WB in LR and then updated the DNG metadata without updating the preview--perhaps by having the Auto XMP writing turned on.
I'd suggest removing the CR2 (and any associated DNGs) from the library, deleting any XMP, and starting over by importing the CR2 with As Shot parameters and convert directoy to DNG from W/in LR and see if you can make it happen, again.  If you figure it out, then tell us.  If you can't figure it out, then don't worry.  The CR2 and the DNG are ok and you can use them for creating your color profile with the passport software which ignores any edits you make to the DNG anyway.  Trying it with my Passport software shows a non-blue DNG with the green rectangles over the various squares, so the DNG, itself, is fine, just the preview is wrong.

  • Mass Conversion to DNG??

Ok, I have about 2000 NEFs on my external drive that are in different states of organization. I'm about to get my new laptop, and the urge to do a real organization of files is getting stronger. I figure it'll be easier with a few thousand images than a few tens of thousands of images.
How should I proceed? I have about half the images keyworded. None are flagged or tagged in any way - I usually initially X flag the bad ones, and then immediately delete after import. Any help would be appreciated as this will be the first "batch" process I've done since buying LR.
The other questions I have are:
1>Is there any valid reason to do this (or not)? Others have suggested it is a good idea, but I'm just starting to learn about the DNG format, and still don't know that much...
2>What should I do with the original NEFs?

    Vince
Don't feel you need to jump all at once - quite the contrary. Convert a few images to DNG as tests, work them through all the things you'd ever need to do, view them in all the programs you ever use, and check the metadata and the appearance in all those environments. Then you can answer the question for yourself.
(When I decided to move over to DNG, it was after 2 weeks of putting all new shots through a DNG workflow. It wouldn't have been too much work to redo.)
I'd archive the NEFs. You may never need them again, but space is cheap and you never know when you might want to test a program that won't read DNGs.

  • CRM 2015 - Create a customized "Personal Wall", or alter settings on existing "What's New"/Personal Wall

I have created an unmanaged solution, and am doing some tentative changes to some existing forms, publishing, them, etc., to get a "feel" for what's going on.
So, in my solution, I copied the existing "Sales Activity Social Dashboard", and simply moved the "Activities" up to the top of the form.  I seem to ALWAYS get an error saving changes in my solution, but the changes get saved, and
they work, regardless of the error.
Anyway - second step - I want to change the filter on the "What's New" (Personal Wall) l on my new Sales Activity Social Dashboard, and default the "All Records" selector to something other than "All" - say "My Open Leads".
But the "Personal Wall" under "Web Resources" for the solution is not customizable.
Can this be altered?  Or must I re-create the form and name it something else, placing it on the Dashboard?  Isn't there a way, even if something isn't customizable, to copy it to a new <form/web resource/whatever> and rename it, and then
    modify it?

some things that aren't customizable can be copied by opening them and choosing "Save As" and naming it something different.  This will generate a copy.  Also a really easy way to make your own entity forms without starting from scratch.

  • Easy way to export without altering settings to original clip

So I have this 1280x720 MP4 clip that is 4 minutes or so long. I only need 2:30 of it, so have chopped up what I need. Now I want to keep the format and settings and everything exactly the same when I export. Is there a sort of "export as is" option so eerything remains eactly the same bar the length?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

exporting to mp4 isn't a problem, final cut will export to MP4. I just want to export out exactly what I have imported in. Surely there must be a way to do such a thing I havn't changed the format, frame size, or anything like that, just the duration of the clip.
The point of me posting on the final cut forum was to be able to do this in final cut, not use another program.

  • Finding Flash Installation, alter settings and use with webcam

I am running on Windows 7 using Chrome.  I am doing a course where I need to send information from my webcam to a website.  I downloaded Flash Player and somewhere on the website it had a section where it had the address of the university.  It also had another address not applicable so I deleted that and in doing so also deleted the address of the uni.  I know diddly squat about both the webcam and Flash and am really running out of time to submit my assignments.  Flash did unload on my computer, but to where, I have no idea.  I have done searches but it nothing. So that took most of yesterday. Today, I researched it further and it was suggested that Flash was incorporated in Google and was enabled by fault and included in Chrome system updates.  So I went into plug ins and find the Flash listing is enabled.  There is also only one listing on the plug ins in spite of me downloading one yesterday and it is supposed to be on Chrome as well.  .Bottom line .....  how do Flash and the webcam work together?  How do I reinstall the university's web address on Flash, does it automatically attach itself to webcam and then do I get the option of who I share my webcam work with.  Hope you can understand all this because I can't and I am getting a mighty  nervous about getting these assignments out.   Many thanks
