Conversions aside, the fundamental flaw: Saving Files

In all Macdom it is true that if you want to save your work there are two choices.
Save: OVER-WRITES your file and commits changes.
Save-As: PRESERVES the previous version and saves a new one.
This concept is universal, fundamental and well understood by computer users.
Aperture violates this protocol.
Aperture REQUIRES that I over-write the file I'm working on as a condition of managing it within Aperture. I can only SAVE the file and have it appear in the app. A Save-As, saves the version outside the application and I have to jump through hoops to get it back in.
In Aperture, if I want to perform the equivalent of a Save-As I have to do it before I open the file. I have to tell Aperture to create a new version of the file, open THAT version and continue. This is because I cannot, in an external editor, decide that I have just made changes that I may want to reverse and that it's a good idea to save what I've done as a version. Well, I can do that, but doing it is complicated.
I have to Save-As,
Leave the Application,
Navigate to the saved file,
Drag it into the appropriate project in Aperture,
Delete the version in the finder
Moreover as we know any layers created in any but the first version of a file are not accessible from within Aperture. If I want to open the second or third or subsequent version of a file and access it's layers I have to
Tell Aperture to make a copy of that version of that file to the hard drive
Navigate to that file
Drag it into the external editor of my choice
When I save the file, since it wasn't opened FROM Aperture I can't save it back into Aperture so I must save it to the hard drive
Navigate to the file
Drag it into the appropriate project in Aperture
Delete the version on the hard drive.
From one dialog box we have gone to six new steps.
To my mind this is a silly, obstructive, dangerous workflow. I trust Apple will fix it. They will have to fix this as well as a number of other bugs, bear-traps, gotchas and conversion quality issues before Aperture will be worth it's price tag.

I understand what you are saying, but think there are a few holes in the mental model you have built.
To start with, since you start with an untouchable RAW file, any operation after the start is essentially an automatic "Save As". From there..
<....>
In Photoshop, make changes. Save file back to
Aperture.
You now have one Master and one working file.
You now want to make some changes to the working
file. Click on it and open it in Photoshop. Aperture
does NOT make a version of this file. Any changes you
save will over-write this file. Your previous Version
One is toast.
Aha! But think about how useful a feature this is. Let us say you had done a lot of work with layers in Photoshop. The advanatage is you get back that exact same file with all the layers intact. You can name the version and so distiguish this as a special, Photoshop version that you need to make new versions from if you want copies.
Indeed I think this to be trhe most sesnsible default as the flow should be - RAW goes to Aperture, do do what it can. If the image is beyond just Aperture to retouch, you send it to the e3xternal editor but at that point you've realy reached an end in Aperture and you are working the image over soley with the external editor. There is no other point it makes sense there to make a version for you, it would actually be rath in convieninet if you are making a lot of short hops between Aperture and Photoshop to say tweak an image you are using in a compariosn or on a light table.
However you are not quite seeing the whole picture, as another thing Aperture also does in this case is to make a new copy automatically ONLY IF you use Aperture tools for adjustment. From that sense it is still like an automatic "Save As", only if you do not return to the tool that spawned the master in the first place. As I said though I don't think that to be a very good idea (apart from making side versions from a PSD master like B&W or other crops).
<...>
Worse. You are working on Version 1 and save it at
some critical juncture. You continue working on it
and save it again. If at any point you do a Save As
to create a version from within photoshop so that you
don't overwrite version 1 you can't save that to
Aperture.
Sure you can, you just have to manually rest the saved location back to the "new master" held in the Aperture library.
Alternatley you can copy the adjustment layers from thee "Saved As" image back into an Aperture version after simply telling Aperture to "Edit in external editor" again.
Yes, your Master is safe, as it is in every other
application that converts RAW files, but the work you
do on those images is in grave danger.
Aperture makes some pretty good guesses but it cannot read minds or prevent you from doing silly things in external editors. The real question is why, if you are letting Aperture manage the PSD file are you doing a "Save As" in Photoshop at all? That part of your scenario makes no sense to me, or at least not as much sense as the rest did. Let go and use Photoshop as a close extension of Aperture instead of trying to save files elsewhere when there is no need.

  • CS6 & OSX 10.6.8 - saving files directly to the server does not work (most of the time)

    Hi there,
we just switched from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.8
OSX was installed on a new partition of the harddisk
    Then installed CS 5
Then installed CS 6 via (adobe creative cloud)
With CS6 we got also the problem with saving files to the server (program error)
It happens mostly with photoshop, sometimes with Illustrator.
I read a lot of posting regarding the same problem but didn´t found a real solution yet.
I am also wondering that there seems to be no solution for this now, because most of the posting i read are 1 year old.
Working locally is not really an acceptable workaround for us or anyone who needs to work with Creative Suite in a professional way.

  • My macbook pro does not remember the dates of when I saved files

I have had my macbook pro since late may of 2010, but I recently noticed it has not been remembering the day I saved files. It claims that every file was saved, or last opened on 5/1/2010. How can I make it so my computer remembers the dates of when everything was saved?

Is the clock showing the correct time. Check in System preferences > Date & Time to see how you have this set up. It may be that you are connecting (or trying to connect) to an online time server that is not right. Do you have to reset the time?  Also, are you having any problems with the battery?  I am not sure if this MacBook Pro has a separate battery for the clock, but  if that were defective that may cause symptoms like this.

  • Issue with Saved File Icons

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with the icons for saved files in Premiere CS6 and After Effects CS6.
I've just recently made the transition from 5.5 to 6 and so far everything has been hunky dory. However, today I found that my system wouldn't recognise the saved files from Premiere, AE and Photoshop. So I right clicked on them and chose 'open with', found the correct programs and tried it that way. Photoshop worked fine, but Premiere and AE now have icons that, basically are a white square with a small 'PR' and 'AE' in the centre (same as the exe files). These icons do open up their corresponding projects, there is no issue with that, it's just a bit annoying. the only thing I did today was uninstall my CS 5.5 versions and download some AE templates from Adobe.
Anyone know of a way to reset the icons so they have their original look?
    Cheers
    John

I did today was uninstall my CS 5.5 versions
It's not a good idea to uninstall older versions after a newer version installed.  Things to tend to get messed up.  Always uninstall the old ones first.
    Try reinstalling CS6.

  • Fundamental flaws in Java Server Faces

Fundamental flaws in Java Server Faces (JSF)
After working with Struts framework for many years I wanted to try something new and decided to investigate JSF. I was very impressed with my initial evaluation and recently used it in one of my project. Middle of the project I released many glaring issue with the framework and had to break my head to complete the project on time.
One of the major reasons why I choose JSF was that it had a clean way of mapping a form to a bean(s) and a nice way to perform form actions and navigation between forms.
Although the framework is very promising in many ways, I think the framework is not yet complete and the developer has to fix lot of holes to make the application to work properly.
Following are the glaring functionality that is missing or confusing or messed up in JSF.
    1)     JSF does not provide a way to disable PROCESS_VALIDATION phase. For some reason if one wants to skip one phase another, JSF has made it near to impossible to skip.
    2)     The framework does not provide an easy way to invoke an action method directly by calling a URL (Similar to Struts action method invocation). This is very essential because many/most of the time one needs to check the authorizations of the user to view a page.
    3)     JSF does not support form GET method. They are giving all sorts of reasons not to do this. Its practically very difficult to develop an application with just POST operations.
    4)     There should be an easy way for the developer to tell JSF not to copy the request to the backing bean or at least skip the event phase that copies the request to the backing bean.
    5)     JSF does many operations in each phases. JSF should not overload multiple operations in one phase. Custom validation should be separated from native framework validation. Calling a command button with immediate set to true should be a separate phase event. This should not be mixed with other operation.
    6)     It is very difficult or near to impossible to programmatically unit test JSF application. I dont know what they thought when they developed this framework. Dudes we are in the TDD time period, not 4GL.
    7)     In my opinion one or more backing beans can be linked to a page and a page can be made up of one or more jsps. The fundamental flaw with the JSF is that JSF tries to dynamically map a jsp collection to beans. I dont know who decided this model. They should have implemented such that the user in the faces xml or dynamically say what beans maps to a jsp page. Then they can copy the request objects to the bean and then do other stuff. This way the framework will give lot of control to the developer. In my opinion, if they have to do this then they will have to implement the struts action controller framework and then extend the JSF framework on top of it.
    8)     The framework has some piece of implementation very easy like mapping the bean to the form and command actions and the others near to impossible to understand or make it to work.
I am surprised to see big players like IBM and Oracle backing this product. What I dont understand is why? What are they betting for?
Anyway, I will definitely keep an eye on the JSF progress. But for now, let me take care of my bum. It was a bumpy ride working with JSF framework.

I am not very experience or expert in jsf...
But i would like share my thought/ answer on this issue.
    1) JSF does not provide a way to disable PROCESS_VALIDATION phase. For some reason if one wants to skip one phase another, JSF has made it near to impossible to skip.
    - YES.....jsf make it impossible to disable validation. But it does make it possible to skip some validation with immediate attribute. Anyway..based on My experienc working on immediate attribute.....it was not so easy/flexible to skip the validation as compared to struts..
    2) The framework does not provide an easy way to invoke an action method directly by calling a URL (Similar to Struts action method invocation). This is very essential because many/most of the time one needs to check the authorizations of the user to view a page.
-I am not sure about this.......But i personally think jsf does not provide this functionality.
    3) JSF does not support form GET method. They are giving all sorts of reasons not to do this. Its practically very difficult to develop an application with just POST operations.
    - YES....I personally also feel that this is a BIG disadvantage...
    4) There should be an easy way for the developer to tell JSF not to copy the request to the backing bean or at least skip the event phase that copies the request to the backing bean.
    - YES...agreed.....jsf should make this easier..
In my opinion, if they have to do this then they will have to implement the struts action controller framework and then extend the JSF framework on top of it.
    - No really understand what u trying to say...But I dun think this should be a isssue...
    8) The framework has some piece of implementation very easy like mapping the bean to the form and command actions and the others near to impossible to understand or make it to work.

  • Problem with parameters to fix opening of old tabs and saving files when a new session is open

    Hello,
Since 2 weeks I have a problem: I always fix my parameters to restore previous session with all my tabs and I choose that Firefox asks me where I want to save my downloaded files. Now each time I close Firefox and I reopen it, it is not taken into account, and 3 tabs are opened: Firefox, Google and Thank to install Zotero! I rechange it, but every time it opens these tabs and not my old tabs. The same for saving files. It goes back automatically to open start page and to save my file in Downloads. Even if I rechange, it comes back the same.
I desinstalled CCleaner (I thought it could be that) but nothing changes!
Please help. Thank you very much!
    Martha

    Here's what I would try:
*Reset Firefox - this should fix the issue but it will change settings like where files are downloaded and what tabs open at startup back to their defaults.
*Then change your download and session restore preferences back to how you like them.
    Here's how:
#Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
#Open the options window - Tools > Options > General
#In the General panel set Firefox to open your tabs from last time and set Firefox to ask you where to save downloads.
    #Click OK
That should do it. Let me know if this worked.
    Thanks,<br>

  • Back to saving files to previous versions of Creative Suites

Just a note that the issue of saving files from CS5 backward still hasn't been addressed. Actually, just purchased CS5.5 and can't even save to CS5.0.
I'm beginning to think Adobe does this so everyone has to keep upgrading to newer versions for the money. Please... even Microsoft Office has options to save to older versions of their products, easily and conveniently.
This should be about customer convenience and service, not more dollars. So, my "wish" for Adobe - is to find a way to help their customers conveniently save to older versions of all products.

As has been discussed to death, the method for back-saving is to EXPORT .idml from CS5 or CS5.5, or .inx from CS4 to CS2. .inx files can be read by the next previous version (and there is a hack for opening CS4 .inx in CS2 that sometimes works). .idml files can be read in all versions of InDesign from CS4 to CS5.5, and there is some hope that that going forward extended version backward comaptibility will be preserved.

  • Problems saving Files on Lion-Server

My colleagues frequently report problems saving files stored on our Lion-Server machine. This usually applies to Photoshop CS6 documents but has been reported fpr MS Word .docx-Files as well. Usually the problem can be circumvented by savin the files in question  on the local machine and later copy them back to the server.
Unfortunately the errors happen at random times where I usually have no access to either the cient computer or the server so I have no clue of wht is going wrong.
The Server-Logs, especially the AppleFileServer Logs don't show any information related to anx client side error message.
The only thing I see are entries in /var/log/system.log reading something like

I'm not sure, if these messages are related to the failure of saving files, but they are the only clue I have so far.
Has anyone experienced similar problems or better has a solution to avoid thes errors entirely?

I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. The required index.xml file is missing. Does this mean that I can't use the info on the flashdrive with the iBookG4 or can I do something to get the required index.xml file?

It appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.

  • Office 2013 applications cannot be made to show the "Documents" folder when opening and saving files

(Windows Server 2012R2 and Windows 8.1 PRO)
We are redirecting the user's "Documents" folder to the network (using Folder Redirection). The OS hides this fact however, and most applications simply see the "Documents" folder when opening or saving files, including Office 2003.
Office 2013 however displays the actual path, which in this case is:
    \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents
Even if you forcibly set the "Default local file location:"  in the Options Save area to the 'Documents' folder in, say, Word, Word immediately converts the local path to the network path.
Is there anyway to get Office 2013 to follow the virtual path? All of other apps follow it and expose the users only to "Documents".
    Thank you so much.

There's nothing in my FAQ concerning screen savers, so I'm unsure why you decided to take that approach. From your description, it looks like you only tried a few of the suggestions before throwing in the towel. That's fine, it's your call.
I don't have the problems you described with 10.4.7. Usually when folks have problems after an update, these are caused by either installing an update on an already-corrutped system or they've installed third-party applications or hardware that have been rendered incompatible by the update.
Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!

I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.

No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule. It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

  • Saving files on the same hard drive time machine is using

I was wondering how I go about saving files other than backups on the hard drive I purchased. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you haven't started your Time Machine backups yet you can partition your new drive, using one partition for Time Machine and the other for file storage. If you assign partition #1 to Time Machine you can reclaim the space on partition #2 for Time Machine at a later time.
You can follow the directions in this article. for formatting/partitioning a drive for Time Machine but you want to end up with two partitions rather than one. People with PPC Macs should substitute Apple Partition Map for GUID when following the directions.
