Convert 24FPS NTSC to PAL with 4% time change?

I have a 24fps HD master and I've produced NTSC SD DVDs from this using Compressor. Now, for submission to a festival in Europe, I need to generate a PAL DVD. I would be very happy to do this as a frame for frame transfer and have the overall speed/running time slightly altered, RATHER than have the software (final cut or compressor?) try to interpolate my 24 frames into 25 frames per second.
I can't find any doc with Compressor that clarifies whether this is possible.

Jim, I'm out of my knowledge base here, but the forum seems to be semi-functional today, so here's my thought...
IIRC, many European DVD players will read NTSC DVD's. (I'm sure others will clarify this if I'm wrong) This is not to say you should rely on that as a solution.
I've seen this discussed here previously, so try searching the forum while you're waiting for better info.

Hey guys,
I have just a quick question.
I am making a home made video. I did all the editing in FCP and made a great DVD in iDVD. I would like to do the same thing in PAL format so I can send it to my parents in Europe. My original footage is in NTSC. I did my own research and tried using compressor to change format to PAL.
I tried several different settings (PAL DV, Mpeg 2 PAL) but the outcome movie is always missing chapter markers.
I also tried to import the PAL movie (after conversion in Compressor) to FCP and added chapter markers but did not work.
Does anybody know how to convert the format from NTSC to PAL and keep the chapter markers at the same time? I would like to mantain as high quality as possible.

Well, this seemed to work. However, being completely new to converting to PAL, I was surprised to see the "jumpiness" that goes along with the frame rate drop. Looking at it taxes the eyes as it seems like its dropping frames every so often. I realize, through more research that this is due to the 25 FPS nature of PAL plus the fact that I'm converting and not just authoring from PAL material. Having said this, is there a tried and true way of "smoothing" this jumpiness that anyone would share?
A friend of mine suggested that when I place the file into DVDSP, I choose the TOP field in the encoding tab, prior to burning the disk. In the past I have always left the FIELD menu set at Auto. He says that setting it to TOP might help a little.
He also told me that a lot of the software based converters don't do the best of jobs. Although acceptable results may come from tweaking the settings, the best way to convert NTSC to PAL (with the most pleasing results) is by using a very high end converter (not a computer). Although you have to weigh out the circumstances such as how many disks will eventually be converted compared to available budget, is it worth spending a little extra for a master that will ultimately see 1,000 copies?
I'm planning on showing my client the burn with field dominance set to TOP, on Monday. Hopefully she'll find it acceptable and I'll be able to move on with this project. Thanks for all the help!

Workflow for converting NTSC to PAL with Premiere/AME

Hi everyone,
After searching the forums, I see that to convert NTSC to PAL for standard def DVD, most recommend using Canopus Procoder software for the MPEG2 encoding, or using a hardware based solution. I don't have the money for those options, so I was hoping you could clear up something for me. Which of these options is best?:
Option #1: import the NTSC footage into Premiere and edit on a NTSC timeline with settings matching the original footage. Then use Adobe Media Encoder to encode a PAL format MPEG2 file for the standard def DVD.
Option #2: import the NTSC footage into Premiere and edit on a timeline set up with PAL resolution and framerate settings, and simply scale up the NTSC footage to match the larger PAL resolution. Then use Adobe Media Encoder to encode a PAL format MPEG2 file for the standard def DVD.

pal to ntsc is not quite the same as ntsc to pal.
pal has more scanlines and there for makes a better end result to ntsc than ntsc to pal.
Usually ntsc converted to pal does not look very good on a tv.
That's why i recommend to leave it in ntsc, most pal players can be switched to ntsc.

Any tutorials on converting HD NTSC to PAL?

I have footage that was shot on a JVC camera, saved in a FCP file on a DVD disc. I was able to load the footage from the DVD onto the FCP timeline.
How can I covert it to PAL?
I have tried to understand the posts in this forum but everything is in bits and pieces. Are there any step-by-step instructions or tutorials available any where? Or is this process done by purchasing more software?
I have a Mac OS X, 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5.

You can convert NTSC to PAL using Compressor.
Other alternatives for standards conversion:
[JES Deinterlacer|http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html] -decent quality and free.
[Natress Standards Conversion|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconver sion.htm] -great quality, costs $100.
Or.... Take the original to a production facility that has either a Terranex or Snell & Wilcox converter. This will cost money so shop around. But you will get excellent results and it is real time, the other methods all take a very long time, even with a powerful high end Mac.

Convert from ntsc to pal, how to get best results?

I have some footage shot on NTSC that I need to convert to PAL with best possible results to be included in a documentary for tv. I undersatnd that it is possible just to select the material in a sequence, change the sequence settings and render. But is there a more satisfactory way to do it resulting in image quality.

Use Compressor's "Advanced format conversions" instead. i.e., edit in NTSC, then export your NTSC sequence using compressor from FCP.... choose PAL as the format.

Converting From NTSC to PAL

I have produced a DVD with FCP and DVD SP4 in the NTSC format. Now I need to produce the same video in PAL. What is the easiest way to do so??? I have all the original files.

One way would be to recompress the video using Compressor and the original final edited movie files (The ones you exported from FCP as a Quicktime Movie).
After you select the preset in Compressor, change the Video format to PAL. It probably was originally set to Automatic.
In DVDSP, if you have background assets you made specifically to NTSC sizes, you'd need to re-create them in PAL dimensions if you want to do it right.
I haven't done this so I can't tell you how well this works quality wise. I know there are some expensive options outside of the Final Cut Studio suite. You may as well try Compressor since it will only cost you some computer time. If its quality doesn't stand up to your standards, then you can look elsewhere.
BTW, you may want to ask yourself if its even necessary to convert. Most PAL DVD players can play NTSC DVDs. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary (a PAL country) all the time and my in-laws have no trouble using them. They certainly don't have any high end equipment either.

Loss of sync converting from NTSC to PAL

Most likely problem is that the timeline you're doing the conversion on is not PAL. You should open the sequence settings for the timeline, and check that it's 720x576 and 25fps. If you're following the nesting method from the instructions, make sure "nesting" is on. Also, if you've not already done so, watch the videos here:

Software that converts? NTSC to PAL

Is there a software where a video that was shot on NTSC format be converted into PAL to play overseas?

Although the suggestions given by the posters are valid, if you are doing the conversion for broadcast you may have difficulty passing QC if you use these software converters. I know that I have.
The most reliable way of converting for broadcast and getting through QC is to go through a Terranex converter - a process which is available at your friendly local video facility. It costs me about $250 per hour for HD to PAL HDCAM (excluding tape stock).

IMovie - Changing From NTSC To PAL & Other Way Around

I want to make a dvd in pal format and at present its only doing them in NTSC format. I've looked at the help on the site which states:
iMovie initially set all projects to PAL or NTSC video depending on the type of camcorder or device you connect to the computer, or the format of the first video you import.
To set new projects to be NTSC or PAL, follow these steps:
Update to iMovie 3.0.3 or later. It is available from the iMovie website (http://www.apple.com/imovie/). iMovie 4 is available as part of iLife (http://www.apple.com/ilife).
Open iMovie.
From the iMovie menu, choose Preferences.
Change "New Projects are:" to either NTSC or PAL.
Now I'm using 6.0.1 but I can't see "New Projects are" anywhere under the preferences in iMovie HD, can someone please offer me some suggestions as although this is my first mac I've had a pc for sometime so I'm not totally clueless about changing options and looking where to find these things....

With iMovie 6.0.1 the wording has changed slightly. In preferences, under 'General', you now want 'New Project Frame Rate:'. Set to 25 fps for PAL, and 29.97 fps for NTSC.
Presumably, as you're in the UK, all your imported footage is in PAL format anyway. If you are importing NTSC footage, but want to export in PAL, I would suggest that you convert the NTSC to PAL before importing it.

NTSC to PAL project conversion?

I know this question has been dealt with alot in the past but I can't seem to find an answer to my question. I know my video assets have to changed over to PAL
and that is not my question.
My question is can I convert the project to PAL,
with all my menu and buttons intact.
I don't want to have to go back and redo my menu and buttons.
It says the only way to change to PAL is to create a new project,
however then I loose my menu and buttons, which I don't want to do.
Is there away to convert the project to PAL, excluding the video assets?
Or how do I bring menus and buttons from a another project into a new project?

Try this:
- Save As with a new name
- Remove all video assets from your tracks (you can keep the empty tracks
- Change in the Inspector the standard from NTSC to PAL (it must let you do so)
- Reencode your video and import the new assets into the old tracks (don't reuse the audio from NTSC tracks, because probably will get out of sync issues)
And finally . . . Menus. If you made graphics for your menu brackgrounds, you must made new versions of them using the right PAL pixels sizes. If you let DVDSP just resize the old ones, you'll get a poor quality background.
Give a try to this workflow!

From NTSC to PAL .mov - huge, urgent problem!!

Ive shot a shortfilm on a Canon XH A1 NTSC, 24 fps, HDV, 16:9.
It has been edited in FCP and exported as a Quiktime Movie (.mov)
Then i burned it to a DVD and discovers that it lags annoyingly when played on a DVD player (Im from Denmark so its PAL).
Now, i thought running it through FCP would have solved the NTSC / PAL problem automatically, but I was wrong.
How do I make my 23.98 fps Quiktime Movie play on a PAL DVD?? I tried Cinema Tools, but it wont open and conform the .mov file.
I have to turn it in tomorrow and seriusly need help.

All Event times change with Daylight Savings time

With the time change associated with daylight savings time (March 8 2008) all my event times were changed by one hour. EG: events that were 8:45 am are now 7:45 am. I have tried using Time machine to restore to pre March 8 status,but an adjustment takes place and the events remain 1 hour ahead. I have looked through the discussions pages and don't even see the issue identified. I have looked through the menu and preference items and find nothing to help.
I am surprised not to find this a front page topic today, March 9 2008.
Can anyone offer some help ?

I never have changed time zones. Are you suggesting I should have time zone support enabled ?
I just tried turning on Time Zone Support, then restoring my calendar using Time machine. No change here.
As I mentioned earlier, this same problem occurred in the fall (although I don't remember which way the event times moved), this time they moved forward. At the Fall change I was using a Mac G4, which I used as a target to build this machine. The only thing I can think of that makes me unique (although I'm not in that small of a group) is that I have altered one of the files in iSync to allow iSync to sync calendar events with iCal. The syncing has always worked OK.
Right now I'm leary of attempting to do anything with iSync. I'm also finding it difficult to believe I'm not one of 10,000 people experiencing the same problem, but I don't see any other posts.
I found a time zone in south america which returns my times to the correct figure, with time zone support enabled, but that looks like a deeper hole to dig out of.

Hey everyone, I think I've had some success with my time changing issues. I originally posted this to another user as a follow up to her question, but I'm reposting it here. Hope it helps:

So i went to the apple store to meet with an apple genius to ask him why my phone's time kept moving up 1 hour everytime I synced my phone. Well he said that he's never seen this problem before, and after a trying a reset and restore he let me exchange my phone. The problem is that when I went to sync my new phone the problem still persisted. They told me it was probably something to do with my computer and its time zone settings.
So I get home and click on my computers clock in the bottom right hand corner to bring up the date and time properties and sure enought my time is correct, the date is correct and the time zone is correct (Eastern Daylight Time). So I look through the different tabs (Date & Time, Time Zone, Internet Time). The first thing I tried to do was to change where my computer syncs its internet time. It was originaly set on NIST time. I then switched it to Windows time, but this didn't do anything. My clock would still change when I synced to itunes. The next thing I tried was fideling around in the Time Zone tabs. I noticed that the box that says "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings" was unchecked, so I checked it and my computer's time jumped an hour ahead. So I left the box checked but moved my clock one hour back (to the correct time), clicked on apply and left it at that. I synced my iPhone and voila! The time didn't change! It stayed on the correct time! To to make a long story short, make sure that you computer's clock is set on "automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes, make sure your time zone is correct, and that the time is right when that box is checked. I hope this helps you. I'm glad I got a new phone out of the deal;)

As I mentioned in my post, whenever I checked that box the time would be incorrect. It would move up an hour. I've messed with this along time ago, way before I got my iphone. I think this had something to do with the daylight savings change that was implemented this year or last year. I dont remember if I never tried correcting it before, or if I couldn't, but this time I didn't have any problems correcting it. Anyway, since I couldn't correct it back then, I just left the box uncheck and decided that I would change the time manually when the next time change occurs. But it seems to work fine now so all is well.

Will my phone automatically go one hour ahead tonight for the time change? Also, if I set my alarm will it go off at the time it's supposed to, or an hour later?

On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
If you have Set Automatically selected, the date and time for your iPhone is set automtically based on the tower your iPhone is connected to with your cell phone carrier.
The date and time will be changed automatically on your iPhone based on your carrier changing the date and time at the tower your iPhone is connected with.
If the date and time is changed automatically on your iPhone, the alarm wiil go off at the selected time for the alarm. If you need to ensure you don't miss waking up at the designated time, I would use a backup alarm that is not based on the date and time being changed by your cell phone carrier.

NTSC DVD created with iMovie 6.0.3. Need to convert to PAL.

Is there a way to do this without starting over? Can I switch iMovie from NTSC to PAL? Can I take my iMovie NTSC project and copy it to a new iMovie window after switching the preferences to PAL? Would that keep chapters in place? Can Toast or something do this? I sure hate to totally start over.

IS NO GOOD WAY at all - It works but resulting DVD is barely viewable ! (jumpy, un-sharp and really bad)
a) is an excellent choice as long as TV is fairly modern - else result will be Bl/W
My notes on this:
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
• Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet)
NTSC ---> PAL.
• Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
PAL ---> NTSC.
• If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
• If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
• I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
• JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
• Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
I burn to
• Verbatim DVD-R
• Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many

NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines

to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720

I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.
