Convert 60i (30fps interlaced) to 50i (25fps interlaced)

Hi,
I was wondering what will Premiere CS6 (or Media Encoder)  do if I ask it to convert NTSC (or 60i HD footage) to PAL (or 501 HD footage).
Will it just through a frame out every five.. thus giving me a jumping result.. or will it use some sort of algorithm to build a new 50i feed starting with the 60i feed?
What will this algorithm be? Like .. (just guessing) first filed first frame + first field second frame --> interpolated becomes first field... etc...
Can somebody give me a specific answer on how (if Premiere has it) this algorithm works?
Obviously I don't want/need slow motions, I don't want jumps in frames, etc...
I just need the best fastest way fo converting interlaced NTSC to interlaced PAL, keeping the same lenght, the same audio pitch, etc...
Thanks,
M.

We now can create 3d footage strting from 2d
And it looks every bit as bad as using Adobe tools to convert from NTSC<->PAL.
we dan create 50fps footage starting from 25fps
The math is very simple on that one, just show each frame twice.  Not so going from 30 to 25.

  • Converting 60i to 24p

Does anyone know how to convert 60i footage to 24p so the cadence looks smooth? I'm working on a long project and loaned one of my EX1s out to someone who changed the settings and forgot to change them back. Now I have 1 day's worth of footage where one camera was set to 60i and the other to 24p. My project is 24p and the 60i footage (even when deinterlaced to 30p) looks jumpy. I've tried putting it directly into the timeline (FCP7) and a couple settings in compressor. All fix the interlacing issue but none the cadence.

First off, everything should be conveted to ProRes (LT or Regular is fine).
In Compressor, select the ProRes preset and duplicate it. This will create a new preset under "Custom" that you will change the settings.
Under the Video Tab, set the frame rate> 23.976, the field order> progressive and the Retimeing Quality > Best (Motion Compensated)
    Conversions will take a while.

  • Convert 1080i 30fps to 540p 60fps - field specific

The conversion I want to do sounds (to me anyway) like it ought to be very simple (at least, from the perspective of the logic involved) but I can find no way to do it.
I have 1080i source at 30fps.   That translates to one interlaced field every 1/60 second.   Hence, it should be possible to extract - without any computation - a 1920x540 progressive video (I realize that's anamorphic and that the final step would be to horizontally re-scale, but lets ignore that for now.)
So - I want to convert 1080i 30fps to 540p at 60fps - and I don't want the conversion process to use any math or algorithm to "calculate" what each pixel row should look like - I just want the even fields from the source to become the even frames on the output file, and likewise the odd fields become the odd frames.   (Or vice versa, whichver makes chronlogical sense).
It doesn't appear there are settings to do that with Apple Compressor - have I missed something?
If Compressor can't do it, can anyone recommend a 3rd party app to do it?

When converting to progressive you are replacing the fields with one frame. To my knowledge you do not get to choose the field. Programs will most likely chose the upper field for 1080i footage and since it is creating the whole frame the end result will be based on the source dimensions to begin with. The point being that throwing away one field will not 1/2 your vertical size but this could be done with a custom dimension output.
I would recommend using Compressor for your frame rate conversion no matter where you are in the process of deinterlacing or size.
I would try doing some 1minute test files that convert the frame rate, size, interlacing or all of these at once to see if you get the desired results.

  • How do you convert DV 30fps to 24fps?

I am trying to capture DV 30FPS NTSC. I can't seem to capture it to another preset of DV Pal or any other preset. I want to know if its possible to convert my footage to 24FPS or 25FPS. Would I use the media manager after capture or is there something I can do during capture?

Capture the footage as shot - you can't convert to PAL on capture.
You can do pretty good standards conversion (post capture) in Compressor, details here:
    http://www.macworld.com/2006/02/secrets/marchcreate/index.php?pf=1
I've tested this method and the results are pretty good. Or you could buy the Nattress plugins, which are excellent value.
Don't convert till you're finished your edit, then just convert the master or final sequence.
Remember also that the vast majority of PAL VCRs and DVD players can play NTSC, as can most newish PAL TVs, so you may not strictly need to convert at all.

  • Loading 30fps video into a 25fps composition...?

I really should know this already, but since I've always worked with 25fps it's never cropped up.
    If I import a 30fps movie into a 25fps composition does it
    A) get slowed down to fit all the frames in (which, in this case, is what I'd prefer) or
    B) are frames skipped or blended to keep it the same duration?
And how do you change form A to B, or the other way around?
And also - what the best way to re-interpret 30fps as 25?
    Cheers!

Setting the frame blending of your footage layer defines how After Effects re-times it.
With no frame blending, frames will be skipped at required points - you may see slight "hiccups" in the rendered footage.
With frame blending set to Frame Mix mode, AE will blend overlapping frames.
With frame blending set to Pixel Motion, AE will create new frames based on the combination of multiple frame contents.  This is the most sophisticated option, and much slower to render.

  • Converting North American HDV1080 60i into European HDV 50i

    Hello folks,
I have HDV footage (1080 60i). I need to make a DVD for friend in Europe, so I am looking for the best way how to end up with HDV 1080 50i DVD. Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I just edit in 60i and then use Compressor to convert it to 50i, or edit in 60i and just export it as HDV 50i, or is there any other trick of how to do this?
    Thank you so much.

If it is a PAL stream you should convert it to NTSC before bring it into DVD SP. I usually will export as self contained using ProRes, use Compressor to convert the same Codec in PAL/NTSC (which ever way it is going) then encode that to m2v.
but thing is I have no way of checking if it will play in a NTSC DVD player here in the UK.
Usually many players outside the US will play NTSC discs, you may want to check around to see if someone has a player.

  • Converting 1080i50 to interlaced DV-PAL

I want to convert (XDCAM EX) 1080i50 video to interlaced DV-PAL for an SD project. So I import my original clips into FCP and recompress them (using Media Manager) to DV-PAL anamorph. That way the original clip-structure is maintained and the whole batch runs automatically.
But the result is non-interlaced video. Somehow the two fields have been merged into one non-interlaced frame.
Now if I put a 1080i50 clip onto a DV-PAL anamorph timeline and export that clip as a self contained Quicktime movie the resulting movie is properly interlaced. Only problem is that if I want to maintain separate clips I have to repeat this process manually for every single clip.
Does anyone know if it is possible to recompress with the desired result? And if yes: how?

I would export the timeline as self contained in an uncompressed codec and use Compressor to mmake a PLA SD 16:9 m2v and not recompress via media manager, etc.

  • A/V sync problems with mencoder -- trying to convert to 30fps

The title says it all. When encoding with mencoder (latest from extra repo), with seemingly everything tried, I absolutely cannot get the audio to sync! It's driving me nuts! Here is the basic command command I used:
mencoder -fps 30 -ofps 30 -ovc xvid -oac mp3lame -xvidencopts bitrate=whatever_i_want:trellis:aspect=16/9 -lameopts cbr:br=128 -vf harddup,expand=aspect=16/9,scale=480:272 infile -o outfile
Where the infile was any one of:
    * A standard, .avi Xvid 23.976 fps 800kb/s video with MP3 112kb/s audio DVD rip you can find on the net and filesharing sites (here the vbitrate was 800kb/s)
    * An .mpeg MPEG1 25fps 1150kb/s video MP2 224kb/s audio (here bitrates were outputted to the same values)
    * An .mp4 H264 29.989fps high-bitrate (in the 2000s, was somewhat random) video AAC audio file downloaded directly from Youtube with a DL mp4 from YT Firefox extension
I also tried to mess with the codec settings, like using libavcodec, no trellis as an option, different bitrates etc. but the audio is still out of sync! Although on the mencoder man page it says to put harddup at the end of the filer chain, I've tried that; all it did was cause weird graphical glitch of a band of rectangles containing some video on the right side of the screen, as well as ignoring the expand filter. And it didn't even fix the A/V sync. To be specific, the audio is considerably behind the video e. g. by the time the video ends, audio is still playing from long before the ending credits from an earlier scene, and cuts off as the file ends.
On a side note, framerate conversion with ffmpeg (which, if I understand correctly, mencoder/mplayer is based on), with -r 30 works. But for some reason I find a quality difference (even when using libxvid directly as a -vcodec) and, on top of that, cropping fails with "Vertical crop dimensions are outside the range of the original image." (which they weren't). Argh, I don't think I've every googlesearched this hard only to not get an answer!
Why am I trying to do this? I am converting these videos for playback on my Samsung P2, whose video format requirements are pretty strict (scroll down to video).
And just as a side question, if that if all figured out, I'm trying to make sense of multi-pass encoding. Anyone have some howto to point me to? Any tips on multipass/framerate encoding? And please, don't tell me to RTFM. Mplayer/Mencoder's man page is 300kb uncompressed in itself. I have already tried to made sense of this large document and it has failed to give me an answer (it is a good resource for xvidencopts and the like, but not so much a good guide for mplayer/mencoder.

Before my ATV I used a Rapsody N35 media play with a 400GB disk and converted all my DVD's to Xvid using avi.net on Windows.
I'm now converting some of these movies to ATV (h.264) format using visualhub, it cost £12.95 and does a great job. I tried a few free or open source converters but settled on visualhub because of ease of use and quality of conversion. I also want a Mac OS application.

  • Converting 23.976 ProRes to PAL 25fps.

I need to convert some 23.98HD ProRes to PAL SD.
I tried using Graeme Nattress' conversion software, but I find that there is a slight stutter where his software creates an extra frame - the 25th frame. He advised me to use Cinema Tools to create a file which runs 4% faster via the "conform" option.
However, I have no idea how to do this and can't find anything helpful in the manual.
Can anyone give me guidance, some sort of workflow or a page in the manual - in short, anything to assist me?
    Thanks
    Harry.

Thanks very much for the response and for testing.
So, once I have conformed and it is 25fps, then I convert to PAL, right?
But won't the conversion to PAL, either through FCP or through Nattress Conversion add the 25th double frame, or maybe there's an option for fixing that.
    many thanks.
Have to go out now, so if you answer my question, I can only reply later tonight.
    best wishes and thanks again

  • Is it Possible to Convert 60i Footage to 24p?

I was wondering if it's possible to convert footage shot in 60i to 24p and if it'll look good.
Like, if I took 60i footage and put it out at 24 FPS in progressive scan through compressor, would it take out the correct frames? Or would it look all weird?
Just curious if it looks good and if there's a good way to do it.

Probably your best bet would be http://www.nattress.com and his standards converter. Moves 60i to 24.
    Good luck,

  • How can I convert 720p 30fps AVI to h.264?

Appreciate any guidance on this matter.
I have almost stopped using my DV Cam once I purchased the Canon Powershot TX1 which records video in 720p 30fps in AVI container. For me to import these clips to my iTunes library so that I can view them thru Front Row, Apple TV and download into my iPhone and iPod Touch, I need to convert them to h.264 format.
What is the best way to do that? And the software should support batch conversion of multiple clips. Is Quicktime Pro the right choice for this?
    Thanks,
    New2AppleTV

    Hi Eric,
I have used Handbrake to rip my DVDs and then put them on my Mac Mini as a media server for the Apple TV. I love that tool. However, it doesn't work on .avi files from my camera (at least that is my understanding and I maybe wrong). I have used the trial version of VisualHub, but as you said the full version is no longer available. However, now that I can do my editing and retaining the 720p format using iMovie'08, I don't need any other tool. I am looking forward to iMovie'09 for chapter marking within the same tool. The current workaround of sharing it with Garageband for chapter marking is too cumbersome a process.

  • Converting 29.97 stock footage to 25fps

I have some stock footage that is 29.97fps in my final cut express sequence and it jerks every second or so, while the rest of my footage is 25fps and plays smoothly - how do I convert the 29.97fps to 25fps so it plays smoothly. There is no audio with it, so that is not a problem.
I have the new compressor but I have no idea how to use it
    Thanks

The low-cost way to convert NTSC footage to PAL is to use JES Deinterlacer.  Convert the clip(s) to PAL and then re-import them back into FCE.
Is this SD or HD footage?

  • Convert to 30fps for NTSC

    Hello all,
I tried converting a DV piece to 24fps via Nattress film effects but the result is too shaky. If I didn't blow up the picture to 133% to give it the widescreen look I might have gotten away with the 24fps but no dice.
So, I tried converting it to 30 fps and it didn't look as bad. Will I be able to get this into a NTSC format DVD? Or will I have any other problems down the road for NTSC?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pete

I haven't gotten an answer out for this but I wanted to clean up my unresolved questions.

  • Convert final 30fps to 24fps

i've filmed a project in 29.97fps and exported as current.  But for a film festival wants it in 24fps. I tested that as a test in Apple Pro Res and of course the opening tiles repeat and inspector saw it in 23.97fps.  is there a format to keep the frame rate at 24 film style look (23.97) with the recored 29.97?  Especially burning it onto blu ray (in toast)

    >is there a format to keep the frame rate at 24 film style look (23.97) with the recored 29.97?
What?  Are you asking how to get the 24fps look, at 29.97 fps? or how to convert 29.97 final to 23.98 to fulfill the film festival requirements?
I just had this same issue...indy doc that has been shooting over 8 years, started as SD 29.97, but eventually had some HD at 29.97...all needed to be HD, so I did so, and had a 29.97 master. Now required to deliver 23.98.  I did the smart thing and took it to a post facility that has a Terranex and had them convert it.  $100/hour, so $300. And it looks great.  I tried so many other software methods and all had odd recurring frames, or jumps due to frame removals, and didn't look smooth.
    Where are you located?

  • When is 60p no better than converted 60i?

A number of upper end consumer camcorders indicate they can record 1080p60. Some of them (like Panasonic HDC-TM700 say they only record in 60p) but most don't indicate (like Samsung HMX-M20 which says it records both). How do I determine whether they are actually just converting 1080i60 to 1080p60 (which I could do with compressor) or whether they are actually providing a higher quality image with native 60p? Thanks, Dennis

The issue with 1080p60 is that there really is no delivery method that supports it. No final output type plays that back. BluRay? Nope. 23.98 and 29.97 only. Tape? Only HDCAM SR, and that's high end. But then again, 1080p60 isn't a broadcast format either. 1080 is converted to 29.97 for air.
So that begs the question...why shoot 1080p60? The only reason I see is to be able to slow the footage down for nice slow motion. Shoot 1080p60...convert that to 1080p30 for 50% speed. Edit in 29.97...or 23.98 (for more like 65% slow motion).
