Convert a Classic (sfil/movr) Finder sound file?

I just stumbled across a sound file I saved more than ten years ago, what seems to be called a "System 7 Finder Sound." It's basically a resource-fork-only file with a 'snd ' resource.
I actually may have a machine capable of running Classic, but I'd rather not. Is there a way, under 10.5 Intel, to convert this file into a usable sound? QuickTime Player and GarageBand both refuse to open it.

This addresses my question, but doesn't fully solve my problem. Playing the sound is nice, but I'd also like to convert it into a form I can (for instance) play as a preview in the Finder, without the need for a special-purpose utility.
Is there such an application? I'd much prefer free- or sample-ware, as I need this for only two or three files.

    @Ann Bens,
    No, it doesn't matter how long i wait, for so far i can see i don't have any of such an progress bar after importing
    an file. However, it's a short clip. When i wait longer is doesn't make a difference.
    @Richard M Knight,
    I've already copied the SD card to the internal, first hard disk !
    When i import via the media browser it don't make a difference unfortunately ;(

  • Unable to find sound file

    I am having trouble getting a wav file to play back at the click of a button. I keep getting an exception error saying the system cannot find the file, however the Win1.wav file is in the default directory. Perhaps there is a problem with my code. Can you please have a look at my code below?
    try {
                 File tadaSound = new File("/Win1.wav");
                 AudioInputStream audioInputStream = AudioSystem
                       .getAudioInputStream(new FileInputStream(tadaSound));
                 AudioFormat audioFormat = audioInputStream
                       .getFormat();
                 DataLine.Info dataLineInfo = new DataLine.Info(
                       Clip.class, audioFormat);
                 Clip clip = (Clip) AudioSystem
                       .getLine(dataLineInfo);
                 clip.open(audioInputStream);
                 clip.start();
              } catch (Exception e) {
                 e.printStackTrace();
              }Exception error - java.io.FileNotFoundException: \Win1.wav (The system cannot find the file specified)

    Please disregard my previous post. I figured out that the problem was that I had the Win1.wav file in the src folder instead of the root project folder.

  • How do I convert a Simple Sound file to a .WAV file?

    Since I have a Mac Mini (w/Intel CPU) I don't have a built-in microphone.
    I do, however, have an OS 9.1 Wall Street Powerbook with a built-in mike.
    I'd like to send voicemail to friends who use Windows XP
    I used Simple Sound to record a message on the Powerbook and e-mailed
    it to myself. Now what? IMovieHD will apparently (according to Pogue) convert the sound portion of a movie to .WAV but when I open a New Project in IMovieHD my sound file is ghosted.
    Is there an app in Tiger that will convert the sound (voice) file? Or perhaps some freeware app out there?

    Hi, gwgoldb.
    USB microphones are very inexpensive. I'd suggest getting one of those and simply doing the recording on your new Mac Mini.
    For recording:
    • You could use the previously-suggested freeware Audacity to record and save the recording as .wav. Note Audacity isn't a Universal Binary at this time, so it would run under Rosetta.
    •  Use QuickTime Pro for recording and converting (export) the recording to .wav. Some people balk at paying US$ 29.99 for a QuickTime Pro key, but I find it does a nice job in basic recording, converting audio/video, and basic A/V editing, all with the simplicity of the QuickTime interface.
    Good luck!

  • IPod classic displays 'No music' after sync, HDD problem? Geschiedenis • Verwijder  So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn't find any files on the iPod anymore. H

    So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
    I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
    I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
    Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
    However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
    Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

  • Some Finder Sounds Aren't Working (Trash File and Move File)?

    Last night I noticed that *some of the finder sounds* aren't working (trashing and moving a file/folder) on my mac mini. The rest of the finder sounds seem unaffected (emptying the trash, removing an icon from the dock). I tried some solutions online with limited success.
    Odd things that are happening:
    1) After a reboot, the first time I delete a file or move a folder, the *monitor resets itself*. Kinda like when you change the resolution. My TV loses the feed for a sec and quickly reestablishes it. After this happens, no finder sounds for moving and trashing
    2) I heard some people were having this same problem because of coreaudiod.plist files (Library/Preferences/Audio. When I copy the com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist to the desktop these finder sounds return, but just for this file. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10465859
    3) I noticed these problems after I started using the Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ Digital Audio. http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495 But, I tried switching back to the old setup of a basic minidvd to hdmi and a rca y cable and it made no difference.
    4) I also completely did a fresh install and everything worked fine until late in the process after I did a reboot (see point 1). Is it a third party software problem? I installed the HippoRemoteVNC that allows me to take control of the computer with the iphone. I also have installed Plex, Boxee, XBMC, Perian codecs, Hulu desktop, Quicktime 7, and Transmission.
    System Specs:
    Computer: Mac Mini (Late 2009) - 2.26Ghz, 2GB RAM, 10.6.1
    Monitor: Panasonic TH-42PZ700U 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV
    Video/Audio Connection: Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ Digital Audio
    Any thoughts? Thanks!!

    Go to your /Applications/Utilities folder and run the Audio MIDI Setup application.
    Confirm settings there match your expectations.

  • How do I find source files for a specific sound...

    This problem has plagued me through many version of GB. Basically, my roommate creates the garageband files, selects the instruments etc. Invariably when he gives me a copy of the Garageband file GB seems to swap in the instruments for some other instrument without ever alerting me that it's doing it. Basically, nothing sounds the same. We've both done clean installs, installed the same Jampacks. it says the same instruments but sometimes it will swap an organ sound for a string or something not even close.
    In Itunes, there's a way to (command-R I believe) find the source file - is there a way to do that in GB? My roommate's computer has an instrument called Piano and Strings - we can't find any file with that name and for some reason no matter what I do I can't access that sound. We're both on MacPros. Recently I alone upgraded to Snow Leopard, but this problem has gone on for years.
    What I'd like to do is sort of block GB from swapping in instruments without notifying me, or allowing me to know what those missing sounds are and some way of finding them so a GB file will play roughly the same (obviously acoustics or speakers will differ).
    thanks so much for any refs or suggestions.

    Tell him which instruments you have and limit him to those. Keep everything to a subset of instruments that you both have.
    Are you adding to the tracks or just listening? If just listening he can just export to iTunes.

  • Can you record sound using a USB 6211 and convert the data to a .wav (or other sound) file?

    Hello,
    I am trying to build a system that will use a USB 6211 to record sounds from multiple electret microphones and then save the data as a .wav file or other sound file.  I have already built my mics and hooked the mics up to the USB 6211; the DAQ device seems to do an adequate job recording the signal - I've recorded from 3 mics at a time at 11,025 Hz, although I don't know how good the signals are since I can't save them for playback after the fact, and they aren't going through my sound card. Ultimately, I would like to save the data as a multichannel audio file which I could then open in a program such as Audacity for further editing and analysis. Since Audacity can import a variety of sound files, my file format doesn't need to be .wav if another format would work better.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

    If you are sampling all three simultaneously, your highest frequency recordable will be (11,025/2)/3, so about 1800Hz and that will pretty coarse (traditionally digital sound recording is at 44Ks/s at the low end). As to converting to a .wav, there are functions on the "Graphics and Sound" palette for saving waveforms to a .wav file.

  • Finding audio files on Classic not added through iTunes?

    I'm using a different podcast aggregator and digital music storage program than iTunes.  And so I downloaded a podcast episode on it, and tried to add it to my iPod Classic.  How do I find that file on the iPod itself?
    If I can't, is it time to switch to a newer version of the iPod, despite the coolness of 160gbs of space?

    You can do this if you manually sync music to your Touch, but in my opinion it would not be a good idea. Are you really that short on space on your MacBook? If so look into getting an external drive.
    If you don't care about losing these books and videos by all means put them on the Touch and delete them, just realize if you have to Restore the Touch you will lose all of them.

    CONVERTING .WMA SOUND FILES TO
    MP3s ON A MAC - Written 9/28/07
    Here's some help on how to convert .WMA sound
    files to MP3 sound files on a Mac. Hope it helps.
    1. Open the .WMA sound file in Quicktime.
    2. In the Quicktime menu tool bar, go to FILE and
    select SAVE AS.
    3. Save the .WMA sound file as a self-contained
    movie .MOV file. Then create a folder on your desktop
    to store the .MOV files that you created.
    4. Open iTunes and create a new playlist by
    going into FILE in the iTunes menu toolbar and
    select NEW PLAYLIST. Then name your playlist.
    5. From the folder created on the desktop,
    drag the .MOV files into the specific playlist you
    created in iTunes.
    6. In the specific playlist you created in iTunes,
    highlight the .MOV files with your mouse. Then go
    to the iTunes menu toolbar and select ADVANCED.
    7. In ADVANCED, select CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3**.
    Then wait for the iTunes' "ding noise" to let you know the files
    have been all converted.
    **To have CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3
    listed in ADVANCED:
    (a) To have CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3 listed in
    ADVANCED, go into iTUNES in the iTunes menu
    toolbar and select PREFERENCES.
    (b) In PREFERENCES, select the ADVANCED icon. In
    the ADVANCED icon menu, click on IMPORTING.
    (c) In the IMPORTING menu, go to the IMPORT USING line.
    Now scroll down and select MP3 ENCODER. The click
    on the OK button.
    8. After the .MOV files have been converted to MP3 sound files,
    erase the .MOV files listed in the specific playlist you created.
    9. Take your mouse and click on the MUSIC icon in the LIBRARY section.
    Now in the LIBRARY section, search for the converted files.
    Once the converted files are found, be sure to highlight one at
    a time-- you'll be making sure which ones are mp3s and which are not.
    10. Once a converted file is highlighted, go into FILE in the iTunes
    menu toolbar. Click on GET INFO and check which files are
    .MOV or MP3 files. Delete each .MOV file found.
    11. Now you're left with the converted MP3 files in the LIBRARY.
    Highlight and drag all the converted MP3 files from the LIBRARY to your
    specific playlist you created. Now you're done! Enjoy your
    new MP3s!

    There is no solution for playing and coverting DRM-protected WMA files on a Mac. I don't even know of a way to covert DRM-protected WMA files on a PC; you normally have to reimport them from the CDs, or when purchased from a download store burn them to an audio CD (where allowed).

  • Convert Sound Files?

    Hello everyone,
    I have a large number of Mac OS 9 sound files, TV theme songs, commercials and sound bytes.
    I would like to play them in OS X but they will not through Quicktime. The sound file icon is dark gray with green letters EXEC in the top left corner. Tried adding a .mov or .aiff extension to the file and tried to play through Quicktime....no luck.
    Any ideas on how I can convert the sound files to play in OS X?
    Thanks in advance,
    AJ

    Sounds (no pun intended) like your audio files are probably QuickTime compatible but they are missing the correct file extension. Adding .mov or .aiff will not fix it.
    The icon shown in OS X is a Unix "Executable" file but we know that isn't true. Because the file extension is missing you may have to "guess" and also may need an OS 9 machine.
    Most audio files from the OS 9 days were probably .wav and .au (System sounds used .snd).
    If you want to explore you can send me a small example file via email using my screen name (left) @ mac.com and I'll do some testing when I have some free time.

    any one who has an information please tel us...thanks

    I think you have to be a bit more explicit. The sound file is already defined in terms of numbers. These are typically amplitude samples coded as 16 bit or 8 bit with some simple compression (alaw/ulaw) on the 8 bit.
    What other sorts of 'numbers' do you want?
