Convert a mobile account back to a regular network account?
I need to somehow convert a mobile network account profile on a Mac to a non-mobile account -- ie, a regular network account. The user obviously has multiple settings associated with his existing profile and we'd like to salvage those if at all possible.
Dont just untick the LDAPv3 Plug in, you have to
select Configure and Delete the configuration, save
the changes then quit.
I did that.
Navigate to /Library/Managed
Preferences and remove any preferences there.
Did that too. But whenever I log back in. They are there again.
Next lauch NetInfo Manager in /Applications/Utilities,
click on the lock and authenticate, select Config and
delect mcx_cache.
I did this also. There were actually 2 mcx_cache folders. One in the /config/mcx_cache and another at /mcx_cache. I deleted both of them.
Next select System Preferences >
Accounts and delete the Mobile Account thats there –
it should have Mobile Account beneath it.
This is the part I can't do because I need that account. If I delete the mobile user, I lose that account and I can't do that. Any suggestions here?

I know that at the end of this next school year we are going to be offering the departing 8th graders the option to purchase their MacBook. Due to that, I am starting to look into what it will take to remove everything district related from the device. One major stumbling block I have run into is how to convert their user account. I know I can uninstall the Kanaka plugin, and that uninstall seems to go fine. However, the account is still listed as "Managed, Mobile" in the Users & Groups" System Preferences pane. So, how can I go about changing this account to a "regular" account so that they can keep all of their data and settings?

Hello everyone!
I originally had to convert local accounts to mobile accounts, but the mobile accounts are not working for us. Seems to be unstable at times and just not what we're looking for. Now I want to change these mobile accounts back to local accounts. Oooor if there is a way to disable sync services, that would be fine.
I took the user out of the group that had our mobile account preferences, but the user is still backing up to the server.
ThanksThe way we do it is basically the same in either direction with the basic goal of retaining the user's data and settings:
1) delete the user from the local machine, but leaving the home folder as is (the home folder will be changed to +user (deleted)+ )
2) recreate the user account either as a new local account (from system prefs), or a new mobile account (by logging in and creating the account, then logout) as required.
3) as an admin, delete the default home folder that was created when the account was created. I usually do this from the command line : sudo rm -rf /Users/user
4) again from the command line, change the name of the home folder : sudo mv /Users/+user (deleted)+ /Users/user
5) finally change the permissions on the home folder: sudo chown -R /Users/+user user+
Test, it should be good from there.

I finally got it that I get rid of my managed account with the following commands
sudo dscl . -delete /Computers
sudo dscl . -delete /Users/mobileaccountname MCXSettings
sudo dscl . -delete /Users/mobileaccountname MCXFlags
sudo dscl . -delete /Users/mobileaccountname cached_groups
The next challenge is to remove the "mobile".
Any ideas how to do convert a mobile account into a normale account.

Changing name in pfile only will not work and you need to rename the database. What is the problem you face file recreating the controlfile? There is another utility for this purpose called "sid" See following document

Convert Open Directory mobile accounts to Active Directory mobile accounts
We have 200 or so Macs using OD mobile accounts.
Implementing Active Directory, getting rid of Open Directory.
How do I change the mobile accounts from OD accounts to AD accounts so that it authenticates against the AD Domain Controller and thus change compter login password when it's changed in AD?
I can convert accounts this way:
a. Delete users’ user account in User preferences pane of System Preferences, but choose to not change the home directory.
b. Log into users’ account by choosing the other option, thus creating a mobile account.
c. Log out, log into admin account, delete the newly created home directory, rename the home directory from the deleted users account to match the name of the deleted home directory and do a chown –R on the directory for that user.
Obviously doing above 200x times is tedious and I'd like to avoid this if possible!
Any other ideas? Preferably a script I can deploy to all computers?I am also testing Leopard in my Active Directory domain and here is what I have found so far. The wireless networks in Leopard seem to be a combination of Panther and Tiger. Each 'Location' that you set has its own list of preferred networks. I have one location for when I am locally on the domain network and others for my bench network and all others under 'Automatic'. The one problem with what you are talking about is that if people change locations and forget to change it back before they log in, it will not find the network, however, adding the other networks all in one location is fine as long as the AD network is on top. You also have to wait about 20 - 30 seconds after you reach the login prompt before proceeding or it will log in without being connected and the AD resources will not be available. I am also finding that Panther knew when it was not on the AD network and did not give any errors, however Leopard squawks when I log in on a different network.

How do I change a mobile account back to a local account?
I posted this under the "Using OS X Server" but having got any replies, so I thought I'd post it under PHD.
Our company split into two seperate companies. We moved and the server stayed. All of our machines were on the server and had portable home directories. We no longer connect to a server. And the server we were connected to is no more. So we can't access it at all. Reinstall is not an option.
I want to know if it's possible to change a mobile account back to a local account. Login takes FOREVER!! And I can't access my "Login Items" under "Accounts" in System Preferences. Is there anyway to fix this?
Whenever I log into my administrator account on the machine, login is very quick.

Best practice converting local laptop accounts to Mobile Accounts with PHD
Hi,
what is the best practice to convert local laptop users (with different UIDs than their network account) to mobile accounts? Especially when the local dir should not be synced in whole (just Documents, Library). Client and server are 10.5, network accounts are on NFS.
I tried creating the mobile account with a minimal network directory (Library etc. ) and then move the original folders into place, but this didn't work out (the sync info was overwritte somewhere ..)
ChristianI think your best bet is to copy the home folder off the laptop to the user share on the server. Then with WGM create the same user and the apply all permissions of the network user to the copied folder.
Once you have that create your settings for the PHD and then go to the laptop. There you will setup the laptop and bind it to the directory, have that user login (might want to do this on a lan, not airport) and then it will move all the data across to that laptop, and since the network user (same as the local) owns that folder everything should work. If the password is the same then OS X should fix the login and keychain password, so saved forms or email password would show up.
I did this same thing for 20 OS 10.4 client laptops. Took me a while to get all of this in place but will spare you the running around...

I have read that Snow Leopard isn't support by Icloud. I am thinking of upgrading to Maverick, but first need to back up my computer.
Also, if I upgrade, will my programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite stay on my computer?You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud; and you cannot use most of iCloud's facilities with Snow Leopard. You should get an external hard disk and make a clone - that's the safest possible backup as you can boot from it in an emergency.

Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button

Deleted items reappear on mobile account with syncing?
On a mobile account with syncing, deleted items will reappear after syncing. One can manually do a full sync. Then delete stuff. Then do a full manual sync again and the deleted items are back.
This is on Leopard 10.5.6 client and Leopard 10.5.6 server.
Open to ideas one what I ought to look at.

I'm happy I'm not alone (sorry..)
I have exactly the same problem, although I'm using Linux server, not OSX.
It all worked nicely until 10.5.6 upgrade, after that I'm having lots of home sync problems, including:
1. locally deleted items re-appear after sync
2. a lot of sync conflicts, specially when sync cannot resolve latest file or directory version between mobile and network copy (and mobile copy will be always the latest one)
3. huge syncs even if no data has been modified, ie:
I'm syncing all on login and logout, background sync is disabled.
I do login then straight away logout, so practically no data has been modified, but the sync may show me tens of GB being transferred.
Now, this is weird: I've done tests on a freshly created mobile account, with approx 50MB of data. Basically I've logged in and out repeatedly, sometimes modifying small files. Some of the syncs showed me transfer of 60MB!!! That's 10MB more than the size of the home directory!
I've looked through release notes for 10.5.6 and some sync issues were 'fixed'. I'm wondering if other ones were introduced...
As I've said, it all worked perfectly until the latest update - I have many machines behaving in the same, bad way.
Perhaps someone has a solution?

How can I convert a POP account to IMAP
I have a POP account in the form [email protected], and I have just changed my hosting company from one that handles POP accounts only to one where accounts can be either POP or IMAP. The question is: how do I convert my existing POP account to IMAP? My main reason for wanting to do that is to keep the "Sent" folder synchronized so that Mail's sent item folder automatically gets stuff I send through web mail just like it does with my Dot Mac account.
I tried removing the existing POP account; this causes any email associated with this account that has not been moved to an "On my Mac" folder to vanish. When I create an IMAP account, these mails don't reappear, even though the email address is the same. Recreating the POP account, though, brings these emails back to life.
Of course, I can have both account definitions with the POP one having it's "include when automatically checking for new mail" checkbox unchecked, but that's really inelegant. Is there a way to convert the POP account into an IMAP account?

Ah, yes, I see! Silly me to be looking for Sent mail under "Sent"! Indeed, there's a disclosure triangle next to the account name under "Inbox", and wen you open it, it shows Drafts, Sent, spam, and Trash. The sent items are indeed there.
Mind you, my Dot Mac accounts show up normally, i.e., their sent mail goes under "Sent". Wish all IMAP accounts did that. It sure isn't logical to show sent mail inside an inbox...
But to answer your question: In addition to having the "Sent" folder for the account under "Inbox", I also have a folder for the account under "Sent". This folder disappears when I check the box to store messages on the server. There were emails in it (the ones I placed there myself). I have now moved those emails to the sent sub-folder under the account under "Inbox". Even with the "store on server" option UNchecked, the emails were instantly duplicated to the server, so that they were present both locally and remotely. I then checked the "store on server box"; this made the mailbox for the account under "Sent" vanish.
To summarize: things appear to work normally now, except that I find it very inconvenient to have to look in two separate "Sent" folders to find emails I've written.

Logged into temporary profile how do i get back to my regular profile?
WHen I log into my desktop PC it takes for ever to get to the start page. It says it is preparing windows. After finally getting past this page it does one of two things.
1. It goes to a all blue screen, When it does this I have to shut my computer off and reboot it. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times til it takes me to my start screen,
2. When i am able to get to the desk top screen i get a message saying that I am logged into a temporary file. Then i get a promt to click here to enter your most recent password(important). I do not know where to go when i click on that link.
How do i get back to my regular account and off this temporary mode? Can anyone help me with this please>CarterFamily,
Essentially, unless something odd is going on, the issue might be an incorrect Registry key entry. If that is the underlying cause of the problem, then correcting the Registry should allow you to recover your profile.
You might try the the following fix.
Find, Open, and follow the procedure in the file named: Temporary Profile Error

How to convert an IMAP account to POP?
I have an existing Gmail IMAP account that has long been registered with TB as IMAP.
I am not happy with the workings of IMAP and want to change (back) to POP3 - preferably without losing my TB folders and messages.
GMAIL gives instructions on how to change server settings at its end, but what it describes for the corresponding TB setting seems to apply only when creating a NEW account in TB.
So can I change my TB settings for the existing Gmail account to have a POP3-type server? If so, how?Hi Christ1,
I know I can convert the existing account to a POP3-type in Gmail. If I do something in TB
# to preserve all my files and folders
# to change the name of the Gmail account
# to create a new POP3 account in the name of the converted Gmail account

How can I create a mobile account in Mountain Lion?
Dear All,
I have a problem creating a mobile account while joining an Active Directory domain controller (DC).
** Case one: While joining the DC, if these options are selected (Create mobile account at login) & (Force local home directory on startup disk), the home directory can not be created at all.
So, how can case one be solved?
** Case two: While joining the DC, if (Creat mobile account at login) is not selected, and (Force local home directory on startup disk) is selected, home directory can be creatded, but not as mobile account.
So, After creating the home directory, I can go to make it mobile account from Users & Groups/Active Directory user and choose mobile account.
after creating mobile account, the user loged out and then loged in back again. from here Mobile account botton is disabled and I can not manage it.
So, How can the bold underline part of case two be solved?
Note: Active directory used is Windows Server 2008.
