Convert aac to mp3 in itunes

hi i have itunes 10.6.3 and am trying to convert songs from aac to mp3.  i select the song go to advance and select convert/create mp3 version the computer works away then nothing happens, no new file and old file still aac.  any ideas? thanks Paula

You got the process correct, it
is just that iTunes only offers you the option to
convert to whatever your preferences are currently
set to for importing.
So go to preferences, importing, set it to MP3. then
go to your song and you can now use the "Convert
to..." option which should show MP3. Once done, go
back to preferences and switch back to AAC if that is
what you normally want to use.

That was fast. Anyway, it worked. Thanks for your help. Now, all I have to do is to work-out what combination of factors I should use to obtain the smallest possible MP3 file while maintaining decent quality. It's an individual decision. What would be okay for me, might be intolerable to others, but I want to keep all sound files less than 1 MB. Make that, "all sound files that I send". I hope that doesn't mean that I will have to keep duplicate files. We'll just have to see. Anyway, thanks again.

  • How to convert AAC to MP3 in iTunes

I sent a friend of mine a song in the AAC format; I had thought that format was universally acceptable. Unfortunately, my friend said that she couldn't open the file. I then thought of converting the file to the MP3 format, because I know she can read that. This gets to my question: How do you do it? When I highlighted the song and clicked on Advanced, the only option was to convert to AAC. That's when I decided to come here. Is there a way to convert AAC to MP3 with iTunes? Also, how widespread is the acceptance of AAC?

    Hello jepperdee,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:

To convert a song's file format
    Open iTunes Preferences.
    Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
    Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Click the General button, then click the Importing Settings… button in the lower section of the window.
From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
Select one or more songs in your library, then from the File > Create New Version menu, choose one of the following (the menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences):
    Create MP3 version
    Create AAC version
    Create AIFF version
    Create WAV version
    Create Apple Lossless version
    Have a nice day,

The normal situation would be wanting to convert .m4a (AAC or Apple Lossless) to .mp3 as these are both music file formats. The extension .mp4 is normally for a video file and iTunes itself will only convert music files from one format to another.
For details on how to convert between music formats see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1550
If you want to convert the audio track of an .mp4 video to a .mp3 file then you are going to need to use a different utility.

  • When converting song to MP3 in itunes you lose the file

When I am converting songs to MP3 in itunes it just disapears, I can't find it when I search in songs. So far I hate the new Itunes, becaue it's filled with bugs like this.

When I convert a song (bit rate or M4P-to-MP3), it saves the new version in the itunes media folder. I can't remember how to make it duplicate in the original album folder so I can judt delete the original song version without having to cut/paste the new song version.
    Any help?
If you use iTunes as your conversion tool, it gives you no choice about where to place the converted file;  it simply puts it into iTunesMedia/Music/Artist/Album, no matter where the original is.
Your choices are to either let iTunes do the conversion and then deal with the results manually, or else to use a different conversion tool, such as Switch, that allows you to select where to place the new file.

  • How to convert lossless audio files in itunes to AAC or mp3 in itunes 10

i noticed some files won't upload to my kids older ipod shuffle (2nd). they are the larger less or uncompressed file types.
i've got itunes 10 and there is no way to convert the files to AAC or mp3 that i can see. these are files in my library. i would like to create a playlist for his ipod in AAC: from library to playlist

This explains how to covert song files.  It works in iTunes 10.  You set the import preference to the file type you want and the Advanced menu > Create  XXX Version will change to match.

  • Cannot convert podcast from aac to mp3 in iTunes

I've downloaded the Mac Format podcast (auto link into iTunes) which is in acc format and right clicked it to select convert to mp3 as I want to burn to a disk (don't have an iPod - yes I know I'm the only one!) The progress bar shows the conversion taking place however once it has completed the file is still in acc format. How do I actually get it into mp3?

Clarification... when burning an AUDIO CD. You can burn data and MP3 CDs in iTunes as well.

known as AIFF files. These AIFF files are playable by 99% of cd players, so you don't have to convert anything.
No, to nitpick, they are not in AIFF format but instead they are in Compact Disc Digital Audio format, aka "Red Book". When you put a CD into a Mac, it just shows them as AIFF files but they aren't until you actually copy them to your computer.

  • Problems converting song from AAC to MP3 in iTunes

    hi,
I have just downloaded some songs from the iTunes store and they download in the AAC format, I usually right hand click on a song and convert it to MP3 file, however I have one song "animal by neon trees" that it keeps coming up with an error but it says it is an unknown error. this is what it says
error occured while converting the file "animal". an unknown error occurred (-3)
has anyone else encountered this issue??
    please help
ps. i have the latest version of itunes, i have also converted other songs today not a problem.

    Hi affilgraph,
Yes, it can be done. First, go to iTunes preferences, choose "Advanced", click on the "Import" Tab and select "MP3 encoder" next to "Import Using". Close the window. Now select the files in questions, go to the "Advanced" menu and choose "Convert selection to MP3". However, if your files are already encoded to AAC this will not decrease the size of your library significantly AND you will lose sound quality. In addition, converting your library in one go might bring your computer to its knees risking data loss. So, I would recommend buying a bigger HD instead.

  • Itunes 11.1.3 on Mavericks: Can't convert AAC to MP3

Select an AAC file, right clock, and the conversion option in the menu is "Convert To AAC". Yeah, both my cars want MP3s there, sport.
Clicked it anyway in case it was just the menu text that was glitched, but, nope. it created another AAC file.
Anyone else run into this? Not quite sure what to kick, or if kicking is in fact helpful. Suppose I can go old school and burn an actual audio CD.
Note: Bluetooth connection mandatory in all future cars.

    Hi,
You need to change import preferences. Go to preference > import settings and change from AAC to mp3.

  • Convert aac to mp3; copy in new location?

Most of my music is ripped into iTunes as AAC.
Have an MP3 (no AAC/MP4 capability) player I want to move music to. Have figured out I can convert the selections to MP3, burn to a CD, and then copy to the MP3 player (it doesn't show up in iTunes). Problem is, everything I convert to MP3, the copies show up in the main music library right by the originals. How can I get the copies into some other directory, as I only want them for copying into the MP3 player?
    thankx in advance
    -Bruce_

There's no way to just drag the files to Toast and have them converted.
If they are unprotected AAC files you can convert them in iTunes.
Go to Preferences>Advanced>Importing and make sure that you've set it to mp3. Then, select the song(s) you want to convert. From the Advanced menu choose Convert Selection to mp3. This will create a second file in mp3 format.
If they are Protected AAC files, you can burn them to an audio CD in iTunes and use them it as you would any other audio CD.

  • Converting aac or mp3 to "media kind" podcast doesn't appear in iphone 4

Hello. I finally discovered you can convert an aac or mp3 file to media kind choosing podcasting which is great for bookmarking audio etc. I hate having to start over form a long audio file listening back. Coverting to podcast was a great solution. Now my problem is synching to my iphone 4 and making sure podcast synch is checked off, etc i see nothing in my podcast director on the phone, it says its empy, but if i go to artist and search for the name it appears under podcasts! Is this some sort of glitch with iphone 4 or new itunes? Anyone else have this problem? If i got back and convert all to "audiobooks" instead of podcasts and synch phone they appear correct in the audiobook section of the phone. I'd rather use the podcast directory but this will work for now. Thoughts? Thanks

  • Convert AAC into mp3 files?

Hi all my music is in i tunes and I want to put some onto a 2 gb memory stick so that I can play it in my cay unfortuantly it only accepts MP3 files does any one know how I convert them .
    Many Thanks

Yes. When you convert them to MP3s the original AAC versions will still be in your library as well.  Anyways, once they have been converrted, locate these newly converted tracks on your HD and copy them over to the memory stick.
