Convert Adobe Lightroom Preset into Aperture 3 Adjustment Preset

Hi all,
Just a quick question... I was a Adobe Lightroom user and recently purchased and switched to Aperture 3 and I love it, however I have a bunch good presets in Lightroom and I would like to convert them into Aperture 3 Adjustment Presets so I can continue on using them. Is there any way of doing it in a simple way (like converting a preset file from one to the other so I can import it into Aperture 3)? Thanks for any help, suggestions etc. in this matter!

There is no real automated way but it should be easy enough to do. Just take a look at what the preset does in lightroom in terms of what adjustments it uses and what settings are used. Do exactly the same thing to an image in Aperture, then save as a preset.
I really never understood why people buy "presets" - the adjustment controls are simple and limited compared to what you can do with say a plug-in or even a photoshop action. Replicating the results visually with having no idea what the preset actually did is easy enough - seeing the adjustment blocks it adds and the parameters it is using makes it a no-brainer.

  • Using Lightroom Presets in CS4/5 Camera RAW

    Hi,
I converted 50 Lightroom Presets I developed that work perfectly as
presets that can be used in PS CS4/5 Camera RAW. You can even apply them
in bridge by right-clicking on the image. Get some freebies and let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Never seen the need myself as I do all this type of work in Lightroom.

  • Does Adobe Lightroom 3 have polarizer effect as Aperture 3?

I have been using A3's polarizer effect for nature and scenery photography, which is perfect. Today I tried Adobe Lightroom 3 in my office for the first time to make a comparison. To be frank, Lightroom 3's much touted noise reduction works better than A3. But I could not find the Polarizer readjustment function in Lightroom 3 to enrich the blue sky.
I may be wrong as Lightroom boasts being more professional than A3. I know there are many shutterbugs who use both A3 and Lightroom 3. Does anyone know the answer?

OK, I have posted the question to the Adobe Lightroom forum and carefully avoided mentioning Aperture 3, but have not got an answer yet. So I did some more research.

[Polarize that sky (without a polarizer)]
I have found another solution. But to me, it's still confusing and a little complicated.
It is explained like the following:
" For the polarized effect, I scroll down panel to color adjustments, choose HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance), and click on luminance. I then click on the round circle thing in the upper left of the color box, move it into the blue sky area, hold down the left mouse button and pull downward. This reduces the brightness of the blues, and the sky goes dark as if polarized. I stop at -70, a big reduction (image 3). The white mountains now glisten against the deep blue. I could also have used the blue slider, but the spot selection tool I did use is a handy instrument. For the polarized effect, I scroll down panel to color adjustments, choose HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance), and click on luminance. • Aperture & Adobe Lightroom

    Hi,
I'm considering moving from Aperture to Adobe Lightroom - do you think it's worth it? I hear the Raw Conversion is better with Lightroom?
Secondly, is it easy to move my library from one system to another? I have no idea where/how Aperture stores it's "edited" version. If it's quite complicated I might just stick with Aperture.
    Thanks!
    Adam

I would be the last person to tell you what to do but I will try and share my experience with you. I have been a Lightroom user since it's inception. I've also had Aperture since it's inception. Over the years I tended to shy away from Aperture because of what seemed to me to be quirk after quirk. Over the years I became quite comfortable with Lightroom's more pedantic, rather rigid (my opinion) approach to image workflow. When Aperture 3 came out I was really gung-ho to give it a try again, only to be disappointed once again with speed issues, brush issues and various other (once again) quirks. I went back to uing Lightroom exclusively.
Well, that was then and Aperture 3.4.1 (vs. Lightrrom 4.2) is NOW. In my estimation APERTURE has finally arrived!!! Now I find the new Lightroom 4.2 to be slow and pedantic. I also find it to be far less robust relative to adjustments. Aperture for me now is the better image editor. I find that I can now get mages fairly close and in some cases better than those adjusted in Capture One. I absolutely love the suttleness of adjustments and brush-on capability that you have in Aperture. I also find it to be significantly faster than Lightroom now. When I finish editing images in Aperture now they seem to be just a touch better than anything I can accomplish in Lightroom. Aperture now has the ability to really make images POP!!
I also find it interesting that I have not changed one thing relative to my hardware over the last 4 years and all of a sudden things that didn't work well a year ago e.g. Aperture has significantly improved and Lightroom has now gone the other way (in my opinion). There are still some things I would like to see in Aperture like better noise reduction and lens correction. But, since I also have PS CS6 I can work around that. But in the end I can do almost 90% of my work in Aperture (using PS CS6 for specialty work e.g. composites and other layer-based adjustments).
While I haven't yet decided to move whole image libraries to Aperture, I am at least moving all new projects into it. I've waited a long time to be able to write something like this about Aperture because over the years I guess I so wanted Aperture to succeed (I am a total Apple hardware user) but was so dissappointed. Let me be clear, I know there are many, many Lightroom lovers out there but for me (at this time) APERTURE is the DAM/Up-Front Editor of choice.
Just one person's perspective about your decision to leave Aperture. Good luck in what-ever decision you make.

I have installed Adobe Lightroom CC.  In the process of launching, a popup appears, that says:  "AN INTERNAL ERROR HAS OCCURRED.  Cannot create the required folder:  /Users/(my user name)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Develop Presets."  So even though Lightroom CC is installed, it will not launch.  What do I need to do to allow it to launch?

The problem was solved today.  Here's the full story.  I'm a Mac user.  At first I installed Lightroom CC on my iMac (desktop).  I had this problem so I called Adobe, and was referred to a "special unit" .  After about an hour the tech solved it for me ... we did a screen sharing and she took control of my computer for a loooong time.  Because of language difficulties, at first I wondered if she knew what she was doing but she eventually solved it.  Although she couldn't explain exactly what she was doing, she summarized it by saying "it was a permissions problem."  I asked if I would have the same issue later when I installed it on my laptop (Macbook Air).  She said probably not.
But I did.  The same internal error popup arose on launch and launch did not complete on my laptop.  I tried chat but no joy so I eventually called Apple Care.  I had noticed that on my laptop (and the iMac for that matter), that there was no Library folder after my user name.  The Apple tech explained that the Library folder is actually there but it is hidden because it's very easy for users to do some very nasty things to their computer by going astray while in the Library folder.  The folder is actually there, but they hide it.  I did remember seeing that the tech helping me with my iMac had typed the work "Library" while she was controlling my computer.  Basically she had activated the hidden Library folder so she could open the path that Lightroom was trying to follow to create that "Develop Presets" folder.  For some reason, the inability to create that folder in the launch process was preventing launch from being completed.  The Apple tech said she didn't actually have to do that and activated the Library folder by use of the Go selection on the menu bar.  Anyway, once that complete path was replicated and opened, the next step was to go to the Lightroom Permissions field and add my user name to the user categories already there and enable "read and write" permissions to my user name.  Once done, I shut down my laptop, and then rebooted.  I launched Lightroom and then boom, voila, heavens to betsy, etc. it launched and suddenly a dismal weekend turned into a great one.
I am not a geek, so I hope this makes some sense.  I also hope Lightroom launches again tomorrow and beyond!

  • Aperture Library to Adobe Lightroom?

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a way, or have any ideas, of how to share my Aperture library with Adobe Lightroom? I like both programs for different reasons and was curious if there was a way to at the very least export my Aperture Library in a way that I can import it in Lightroom? I eventually want to move both of these to an external hard drive as well..
    Thanks!

Well, I just tried this... with one file. What I discovered, makes sense. The original file is not 'syched' because the original is not modified with non-destructive editing. All of the "edits" to the original files seem to reside within the programs, and not with the files. I wouldn't know where to look for this edit data in Lightroom, but I'm pretty sure that in Aperture the edit instructions being stored in the Aperture Library, even if the file is refrenced. This would be an interesting piece of code for someone to work on..... i.e. make a change in Aperture, and Lightroom reads that change from the Aperture library, and vice a versa.
Not sure that anyone would really want to do this on a long term basis as I sincerely doubt that there is something that on program can do that the other can't. (Except that Lightroom does not make books or have a Lighttable). If for instance you created a bunch of great edits in Lightroom and wanted to used those edits in an Aperture book, you would, at this time, have to export the edited versions and import them into Aperture - at least that seems to me to be the current requirements.

  • Import keywords and ratings into Aperture from adobe apps?

    Hi,
I'm currently using adobe bridge/ps2/pse etc as my main apps. I use keywords and ratings extensively.
When I import my photos into aperture, will I also be able to keep my current ratings/keyword tagging?
    Thanks.

I also used Bridge/ACR to rate and add keywords to RAWS (Canon) and also used Adobe DNG converter to make DNG files from these.
No ratings or keywords have imported for any RAWs and DNGs. And, for some DNG files (which I can see in Bridge and iViewMedia), they cannot be displayed in Aperture. It's very strange since I've used the same workflow to create the DNG files over the past year. Some can be imported/viewed, some cannot be viewed. All originally from the same camera/RAW file. I've read in this forum that Aperture cannot read things like keywords from sidecar files.
I am hopeful that Apple will make DNG sidecar file import a big priority.

  • How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

    Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.
    Best Regards
    Alex.

    Importing PSD files into Illustrator
       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place.
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click Place. Make sure the Link option is selected.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
Hope this save you some time.

  • Aperture & Final Cut compatible? Aperture VS Adobe Lightroom?

    Aperture VS Adobe LightRoom?
    I have 27" Mac Pro, 17" Mac BookPor & iPhone 4S.
I'm researching the two and wonder which would be best. I'm a Fine Art Photographer and have 3 years of a huge inventory of images all messed up in iPhoto and thrown into folders on my desktop. I dislike iPhoto soooo much. I'm in desperate need to organize my inventory so I can move on with my work!  Help! Advice pu-lease.
Are Aperture & Final Cut compatible?
I have Final Cut Pro on my 27" Mac Pro.
I have PhotoShop Elements 9 on my 17" MacBook Pro. I want to stop using it.
Looking for compatible software to use with my Final Cut Pro.

What does "software to use with my Final Cut Pro" actually mean? Is it FCP? or FCP X?
iPhoto and Aperture are both equally compatible with FCP, but if it's the older version you use then you'll be exporting from your Photo Manager and bring the images into FCP.
If you have FCP X either will make images available to it via the Media Browser in FCP X.
    So, no difference there.
Lightroom has no interaction with either version of FCP, so you'll be exporting from that to the Finder and then adding to the FCP project.
As for which is better - that's really personal preference. It might help if you explain what it is you dislike about iPhoto, and what you're actually looking for in a Photo Manager.

Wow, maybe this is what Schorr meant by "VERY soon" in this post in this thread on March 10th.
"Actually, Apple has annouced that Aperture support for the Pentax K10D, K100D, and K110D will be available very soon.
We will also be adding support for 11 other RAW formats from different cameras, including the Nikon D40, Leica Digilux 3, Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1, Samsung GX-1L, and seven of the Leaf Aptus and Valeo models.
Can't publish a release date, but this update will be coming VERY soon.

  • Aperture vs Adobe Lightroom (Beta 3) JPEG exports

I've been beta-testing the Adobe Lightroom product and comparing it to Aperture. I'm using Aperture 1.1.1 on a MacBook Pro.
Lightroom has some intriguing features, but I've noticed a wildly different color when exporting the same image to JPEG format from Lightroom and Aperture.
I took the same RAW image from a shot I took with my Nikon D70 and exported a JPEG from Aperture using default settings with no color adjustment. In Lightroom I exported the same image to Photoshop, and then exported a JPEG with default settings and no color adjustment.
    Look at the difference:
    https://www.carsonmedia.com/projects/softballphotos/phototests/photocomparison.h tml
Can anyone explain the difference? Aperture seems to export a JPEG that resembles the original.
    I'm perplexed at the difference.

Yeah, looks like a colorspace issue -- I'm guessing Pro Photo, but it might not be LR's fault. Last I checked, LR actually exports PSDs, not JPEGs, in Pro Photo space to PS. So 2 possibilities:
    1. LR incorrectly tagged the PSD output, so PS doesn't realize it's Pro Photo.
    2. You didn't do a colorspace coversion in PS before saving the JPEG. Try using 'save to web' in PS -- it usually takes care of the sRGB conversion for you. Does it look correct in PS before the JPEG export?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?
