Convert AP to LWAPP

Hi,
We recently purchased a few more 1131 APs for a remote office. For some reason, only one came as LWAPP AP, and the rests are all Autonomous APs.
I have successfully upgraded one Auto AP into LWAPP, it is under control of that office's WLC.
The image I downloaded is the latest one : c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA3.tar, I am not too sure if I should have used c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.123-11JX1.tar
However i noticed that the product ID still shows up as AIR-AP1131AG-E-K9 instead of AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9 like the one came with LWAPP. How to fix this, is this matters. Any help will be highly appreciated.

The image you used is fine for the conversion. The AP will use the code it gets from the controller anyway, so you don't need to worry there.
And sorry, but the product ID never changes. The AP was an AP when it was produced, and it will forever remain an AP. It cannot become an LAP, at least as far as the product ID is concerned.

  • Convert capwap to LWAPP telnet

Is it possible to convert capwap to LWAPP via telnet?
Through the 5508 controller, I enabled Telnet for a specific AP with capwap image.
I was able to telnet to the AP and access CLI.
I issued the command capwap ap controller ip address x.x.x.x
The AP did not reject the command with an error, but it did not accept the command either. Is there anyway I can do this remotely? Do I need to gather the AP's and console in?

Yes, CAPWAP is the IEEE standard (not proprietary like LWAPP which is cisco proprietary) for AP to WLC communication.
If AP is managed via controller (WLC) then we referred as Lightweight (or unified wireless). If it operate standalone without a controller then it is referred as "Autonomous". You  can convert an AP from Autonomous to Lightweight (& vise versa)
In your case since you want to manage it through WLC (which is the best way of deploying wireless), you do not want to worry about  these encapsulation method too much.
If you are new then I would suggest you to read about basic topics like AP registraion/CAPWAP. Here are some links from my blog which may help you on this

  • Upgrade/convert 521 to LWAPP

I have a 526 controller and 4 521 APs on my LAN that I want to upgrade to LWAPP. I am using CCA and all the help says this should be a point-and-click type of thing. However, when I try the upgrade the CCA asks for an image I don't have and can't find in the CCA folder. The download section for the 521 doesn't have it either. Where can I get this image? Is there another way to upgrade?
    Thanks in advance,
    Diego

I have the right recovery code but the CCA topology map doesn't even see any of my 521 AP's. It can see the WLC526 and it can see the 3560 PoE switch it's attached to, but those are the only 2 items on the topology map. I'm using native VLAN as 100. I set the ports the 521's into a trunk ports w/ native vlan as 100 so I can http to the 521 AP's. I'm using 3 vlans, voice, guest, and internal users but I just can't get them to join the WLC as LWAPPS??? Frustrating!! Any ideas? All the documentation shows the AP's showing in the topology map and then you just point/click to LWAPP recovery image to convert them from autonmouse to LWAPP but I can't even see them in the topology map yet I can ping and web to them and they seem fine. I could probably leave them all autonomous and manually configure all 5 and have it work anyways but I'd be waisting the WLC 526 and it would serve no purpose?!?!?!
    Thanks!!!

  • Converting ap1250 to Lwapp

Hello, I am having issues trying to convert from autonomous to lwapp. This is the first time working with this model, we have 1242's which are lwapp and working fine. The version I have is 12.4(10b).JA1 but when I use the upgrade tool and try to use image file c1250-rcvk9w8-tar.124-10b.JA1.tar I get an error stating that the LWAPP Recovery Image is not a valid one. I got this file from Cisco and I am very confused as to why this does not work. Anything I am missing? Thanks!

    Requirements:
    • Image file (The recovery file has the prefix “rcv” in the image name, such as c1200-rcvk9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar);
    • AP is connected to the Wireless LAN Controller; and
    • AP can ping the TFTP server where the image is located.
    Procedure
    1. Copy the recovery file to the AP using the following command:
    archive tar /x tftp:/// flash:
    2. Let the AP boot on this image:
    boot system flash://.bin
    3. Reboot the AP.
    OPTIONAL
    • DO NOT ALLOW THE AP TO JOIN THE WIRELESS LAN CONTROLLER IN ORDER TO USE THE OPTIONAL COMMANDS BELOW.
    • IF POSSIBLE, type the following commands:
     clear lwapp private-config (This will bring the AP to factory default.);
 clear lwapp ap ip address
     clear lwapp ap hostname
 clear lwapp ap controller ip address
    4. Let the AP connect to the Wireless LAN controller.
    OPTIONAL
If an AP refuses to join the Wireless LAN Controller, type the following command from the AP:
    lwapp ap controller ip address

  • Problems converting 1242AP from LWAPP to Autonomous

I tried to downgrade a 1242 LAP to Autonomous through a WLC using cisco's brief instructions:
Step 1 Log into the CLI on the controller to which the access point is associated.
    Step 2 Enter this command:
    config ap tftp-downgrade tftp-server-ip-address filename access-point-name
Seems easy enough, i copied the IOS file (c1240-k9w7-tar.123-7.JA5.tar) to my TFTP root. Then i ran the command mentioned above from the CLI of the WLC. The WLC takes the command but nothing happens, if i hold down mode and reboot the AP it retains its previous settings? Any ideas?

In the end i ended up using the a version of the IOS that was one iteration older and it worked......bizzare

  • Converting back AP 2600 from Autonomous to LWAPP

    Hello,
I have Cisco AP 2600, Previously  i had converted it from  LWAPP mode into Autonomous-Mode.  But now I need to revert it back to LWAPP mode.
Can anyone send me the link on how to do it ?

    HI Imran,
Yes you can convert it to lightweight. Just need the lightweight recovery image.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html
For the LWAP conversion, use the recovery image (example:  c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25d.JAL.tar). after thatuse the command on the autonomous AP priviledge mode.
    AP#archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp://10.10.10.1/c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-25d.JA.tar

so in next days i will try to connect AP to the controller (wlc is in different site, without vpn connectivity).
i think that AP is bad, because of this "weirid chars" on console, but maybe when ap updates firmware from wlc, it will be OK.

  • LWAPP Conversion

    Hello,
I'm rather new to the Network Community, and will be taking the Unified Wireless Class fairly soon, I'm also going converting over to LWAPP, and was wondering if anyone knows of an excellent book that they can recommend.

  • Autonomous to LWAPP with Cisco Prime 2.2

Hello, I need to know if exist any procedure to convert Autonomous to LWAPP  access point with Cisco Prime 2.2.

    Here are the Steps Cristian.
To create an autonomous AP migration template, follow these steps:
Step 1 Choose Design > Configuration > Wireless Configuration > Autonomous AP Migration Templates .
Step 2 From the Select a command drop-down list, choose Add Template, then click Go . If you are updating an already existing template, click the applicable template in the Template Name column.
Step 3 Complete the required fields. For information about the field descriptions, see: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/net_mgmt/prime/infrastructure/2-0/reference/guide/prime_infr_ref.html
Step 4 To view the migration analysis summary, choose Operate > Wireless > Migration Analysis .
Note: After an access point has been converted to lightweight, the previous status or configuration of the access point is not retained.
Hope this will resolve your issue ;)

  • If I purchase a LWAPP AP can I migrate it to non LWAPP

If I purchase a LWAPP AP can I migrate it to non LWAPP. If I purchase a non LWAPP AP can I migrate it to LWAPP, and then back to non LWAPP. Are there any advantages to buying a native LWAPP AP

    Hi Friend,
Yes it is possible to convert LWAPP to IOS AP and also from IOS to LWAPP APs.
Even if you buy non lwapp ap you can convert it to LWAPP and again back to non LWAPP.
    From NON LWAPP to LWAPP
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html
    From LWAPP to NON LWAPP
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp161272
Also the only advantage of buying a native lwapp ap is if your wireless network is only controller based then you do not need to go through all procedure of converting your APs from NON LWAPP to LWAPP and you can start using it directly.

  • 1142 autonomous to lwapp

    hi folks:
Has anyone of you tried to convert autonomous to lwapp mode? I used upgrade tool v3.4 and it said 1140 is not supported. Or is there any other way to do the conversion? Thanks.
    regards
    Alex

Was it a LAP to begin with? If so, follow the "LWAPP revert to autonomous" steps using the recovery image as your file. Yes - I know you are going to LAP, not to autonomous. These steps worked great for me when going from autonomous back to LAP (without using the conversion tool):
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Set the timeout value on the TFTP server to 30 seconds.
Step 4 On the PC where the TFTP server is located, perform these steps:
    a. Disable any software firewall products, such as Windows firewall, ZoneAlarm firewall, McAffee firewall, or others.
    b. Ensure all Windows files are visible. From Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View; then uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types check box.
Step 5 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point, and c1250-k9w7-tar.default for a 1250 series access point.
Step 6 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 7 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 8 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 9 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 10 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 11 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

  • How to install BR1310 for WLC

Hello all, I have a project ahead and I need to clarify some things before starting this project.
I will install a new WLC 5508 and I have 8 AIR-BR1310G-A-K9-R, so Im wondering if I can use them.
    - Can this model be converted to LAP?, right now they are autonomous.
    - I need to used them as AP not bridge and under the governance of a WLC. Could this be possible?
    - The intention is to use them for outdoor operation. Should I use one or two outdoord antennas?.
    - ANT-2506 could be a good choice?.
A lot of questions, I know, but please I need your support and expertise on this matter.
    Thanks in advance!!

To be able to use the AIR-BR1310G-A-K9-R you will need to convert them to LWAPP using the normal IOS upgrade procedure but instead of an IOS image use an LWAPP image.
Then once the unit is in LWAPP mode you can make it join the WLC with the different optiosn avilable and if you want to use them as a point to point link you need to use MESH setup.
Just in case here is the IOs upgrade procedure, remmber to use the correct image for your unit and that it is LWAPP.
    RECOMMENDED UPGRADE TROUGH CLI:
The following are the proper steps to do an IOS upgrade in a CLI/Telnet
session (This is the recommended upgrade):
1st: Use a TFTP server in the computer that you are going to use for the
upgrades. If you don't have one, get the free TFTP server in the following
    link:
    http://tftpd32.jounin.net
Note: Make sure that the computer and the APs are in the same subnet. For
example and AP in default settings will have IP: 10.0.0.1, so you need to
have the computer as IP 10.0.0.2, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.
2nd: Download the IOS image from the Cisco.com Web site.
Note: Do not "unzip" the image.
3rd: Open the TFTP server (make sure that the TAR file's name of the IOS
image is shown as in the web site, because sometimes it gets renamed to
"Download .tar" and if that happens you need to rename it).  Browse the TAR
file and select it, then click ok.
4th: Telnet the unit, go to enable mode and enter the following command:
    ap#archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://IPAddress
    of_the_tftp_server/name_of_the_IOS_image_you_downloaded
In this link, you must specify the extension, as an example:
    ap#archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://10.0.0.2/c1200-k9w7-tar.122-13.JA.tar
Note: The IOS image name is case sensitive, and it should be complete.

  • WLAN client dropping problem

My customer is using WLC4400(4.0.179.11) and LAP1130(12.3jx1). Before converting IOS to LWAPP, the WLAN service is not problem.
But after changing to LWAPP based, the customer is complain about disconnecting problem.
Intel centrino and other vendor's wlan cards are dropping, cisco wlan cards are no problem.
After all we have to fall back to IOS version. Is there any Bug report about WLC4400?

There are some issues with the Intel adapters. I would try downloading the latest driver version to see if that helps. You can navigate to the Intel support page and view the documented disconnect issues.

  • 1130 not connecting to controller after setting to HREAP

I had an 1130 AP connected to my 4402 controller running 4.2.207.  I went to set the AP to HREAP and after I applied the HREAP setting, the AP rebooted and will no longer connect to the controller.
This is the error message I am getting on the controller.

This AP was up and running with no problem until I tried to change it to HREAP.
Any suggestions on how I can recover this AP?
    Seth

I had reloaded the AP last night using c1130-k9w7-tar.124-10b.JDA3.tar renamed to C1130-k9w7-tar.default.  After the AP came up in Autonomous mode I then converted back to LWAPP using c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar.  Once the AP joined the controller and got the image it then rebooted and came up with the same error.
So after reading your response I deced to rename c1130-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar to c1130-k9w7-tar.default and let the AP load this image.  After downloading the image the AP then joined the controller, got its image, then reloaded and succesfully joined.
    Thank you for the help.
