Convert Audio into MP3

I've got two 45min audio files that I'd like to compress/convert to MP3 files. In compressor I chose AAC Audio High Bit Rate High Quality DL. What I got was a 60 mb MP4 QT file which I took into iTunes to convert into an MP3, bringing my file down to 52 mb (down from 500+ mb)
A couple of questions: Is there an easier way to do this and is 52 mb a good size for a 45 min stretch of VO? I've got solid quality at this point. I'm sure I could shave a few MBs. How do they get a Harry Potter audio book into a reasonable download???
Thanks - Gene

Stereo or mono? AAC will give you very good quality at 64Kbps mono, and good quality at 32Kbps or even slightly lower. The latter would give you about 4KB/s which means 45min x 60sec/min x 4KB/s = 10800KB = 10.8MB for mono with a 45 minute recording. In any case, AAC should give you better quality per byte than does MP3. However, MP3 is a more widely used and a more PC-compatible format. Of course, you need to double those data rates if you want to use stereo and maintain equivalent quality.
You can also gain some control over the quality by adjusting the audio's sample frequency (or sample rate -- the approximate values 8KHz, 11KHz, 22KHz, 32KHz, 44KHz, and 48KHz being common). If you want the best quality make certain that the sample rate you choose for the encoding matches that of the original recording or that it is a simple integer ratio below the original (thus "good" ratios from 44KHz would be 22KHz and 11KHz, or 1/2 and 1/4 the original).
Note, however, that if you use lower bit rates (e.g. 32Kbps) for the encoding you may be limited to lower sample frequencies (e.g. 22KHz), which is okay as long as the resultant quality is good enough. The encoder may also force fixed limits on the bit rate depending upon the requested sample rate (and vice versa).
It also depends upon what the source material is -- spoken word, music, etc. -- since you can probably use a higher compression rate (smaller output file) for plain spoken word.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. Do for others as you would have them help you.<center>Thanks for sharing, Waymen.</center></small>

  • New iTunes 4.9 doesn't convert .mpg into .mp3 or aac ?

    hello support!
I'm a producer in a german radiostation. we're working with soundfiles saved in .mpg files (mpeg1 audio). In past (with version 4.8) it was possible to import that files into itunes and convert it into mp3 or aac. Now, with that new podcast version, it doesn't work. If I try, I get an unknown error "(-50)". does anyone know about this problem?
and another question: why does itunes play that .mpg files without any problems and ipod doesn't ???

    Dennis,
    What I did:
    1) I bought apple quicktime pro do not follow me in this it won't help you.. I got angry and at the apple store they said I would get my money back because I asked them BEFORE I bought and they said it would work. It doesn't
    2) I downloaded MPEG streamclip (free) at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    AND....
It works! You do not need to buy the Apple quicktime MPEG 2 component rubbish, you do not need it if you convert just audio!
I have MP2 files with 384 kbbs and I was looking a bit odd when they showed up as 192 kbbs but that is per stereo channel so the total comes to 384 again.
I transferred the files into AIFF and it works I do see a conversion into AC3 is that AAC? well if you can convert to AIFF you can use iTunes again to convert to AAC or MP3!
so now you can do the job! I am now, after a few hours, again back to start to work..... thanks iTunes boys!
there is another app at http://www.dekorte.com/projects/shareware/SoundConverter/ is seems to do the job as well but it'll cost you 10 dollar. And I do not know if it is as good as the free app...

  • Convert .caf into .mp3

    Hi
I have a problem with converting a CAF file into a MP3 file. I used the SpeakHere example and want to send this file. But I didn't figure it out how to convert this into mp3. According to the iPhone Dev docs there's no mp3 functionality...
Does anybody know how to convert it?
    Thanks and Regards

You can play mp3s in the simulator but they won't work on the device. If you really want to convert from a .caf, just use the export function of Quicktime.

  • Convert AAC into mp3 files?

Hi all my music is in i tunes and I want to put some onto a 2 gb memory stick so that I can play it in my cay unfortuantly it only accepts MP3 files does any one know how I convert them .
    Many Thanks

Yes. When you convert them to MP3s the original AAC versions will still be in your library as well.  Anyways, once they have been converrted, locate these newly converted tracks on your HD and copy them over to the memory stick.

  • Drag and drop FLAC audio into iPod to convert and add?

I manually sort my music as albums in folder directories. I have never liked how iTunes wanted to sort my music back in 2005 and I don't like it any more today.
I recently got a 6th gen iPod Nano via the 1st gen iPod Nano replacement program and I am disappointed in how I cannot use Winamp to manage my playlists anymore. Winamp would automatically transcode incompatible FLAC audio into MP3 before transferring onto my 1st gen Nano.
I have my iPod options under iTunes set to automatically convert higher bitrate audio to 192kbps AAC, but dragging and dropping FLAC audio into my iPod gives an error message that prevents me from adding anything.
I thought maybe I had to import my audio into iTunes' library first, but scanning for media adds every audio file including system and program audio files to my library, which really clutters things up. It treats each artist as an album, so compilation albums of 30 audio tracks from 30 artists appear as 30 individual albums in my iTunes library. Most cumbersome.
I am also appauled in how it did not detect or support playback of FLAC audio. I am not willing to convert my entire library into a proprietary lossless audio format just because iTunes wants me to when other programs and I were getting along so well without iTunes and my 1st gen Nano.
Anyway, what I am hoping to achieve is to find a streamlined way to convert FLAC audio files into MP3 or AAC while I am transferring them to my iPod without having to involve another program to manually convert before adding. This is a huge convenience factor for which I am regretting having my 1st gen Nano replaced. I will admit that I am perhaps being overly stubborn here. Maybe I'll just sell this 6th gen Nano while it's still pristine and get a Sansa Clip or something. Apple products have become too stifling and I won't be surprised if there was no way to achieve what I am asking to do here, so maybe this ends up a being more of a rant than a search for answers.

foobar2000 with the ipod plugin will allow you to drag/drop FLAC files and when it syncs the ipod, it converts the FLAC files on the fly. MUCH better than dealing with the crappy iTunes interface and having to pre-convert the files. I absolutely loathe iTunes and it just gets worse and worse!

  • Wave not converting into MP3

I have been sent a wave file that is 2:47 in length. When I convert it into MP3 format it only converts half of the file and it is 1:30 in length??  I have tried many time but I keep getting the same result.  Is it because the file is too big?

    Hey Limnos:
I'm not sure if the WAV is mono or stereo.  While it did actually convert, the MP3 fades out at 1 min. 30 sec.  It is a song being mastered for a CD so I am figuring that the WAV is stereo.  There are 10 songs on the CD and all of the WAV files converted to MP3 with the exception of two. Both fade out in the middle of the song.  The bar indicates that this is the end of the song.  So, in fact it converts about half the song. The actual song is 2 min. 47 sec.  The sound technician says that some of the files are huge and perhaps they are just too big to convert. I'll be getting the actual audio master on Monday so we will test it on every media for corruption.   Very strange however as I have not had this problem before.

  • Does Anyone Or Does Everyone Except Me Know How To Convert Audio To MIDI?

Hello. I'm your new neighbor... I'll be good in the hood... I've been using Logic for 3 years. I have been mixing 14 Tracks of Audio ever since... Never again. No, never, ever, ever, ever again! Ever!
Two questions: Can Logic Pro 7 "Convert" Audio into MIDI? If not will you kindly impart knowledge to Grasshopper which "Software" is widely accepted as the best?
I'll check with Sound On Sound if no one has info here... Thanks.

Does it usually take a long time for Replys? I once asked a simple question in a Recording Studio Forum and waited 20 minutes and said: "This *****, I'm outta here" I returned a year later and found 50 messages saying how impatient I was and even a few kicks in my iAss.
I was a real newbie. More dollars than sense... Avalon, SPL, T.C. Elec... blah-blah. "I'll 'Master my own stuff!" So, I wanted to use the Hardware to "soften". Not a peep! Hello-o-o-o-o-o! All I had was pretty lights glowing.
When I learned the following day, it was only a 'Click' or two away. Usually is with Mac. I love my G5 for Music Production. I've tried 2 PowerBooks an 864(?) and a 1 GHz 17", neither could handle the load of 60 Tracks of Audio. G5, I have increased the Tracks to 78. We're talkin' smokin' trackin' Tracks.
I'll see if I have an answer to:
Does Anyone Or Does Everyone Except Me Know How To Convert Audio To MIDI?
If not I'll slip away quietly and wonder... Does anyone know? I'll return with how to or what to use tomorrow. Then we'll all know!

  • Converting itunes songs into mp3s?

    hi
just wondering whether there is a way? I have just got a car with an MP3 CD player and wanted to use itunes to burn an mp3 CD. However, i can't as everything is either encoded as AAC when i burnt all my CDs or i can't as i have downloaded them from the itunes site.
Is there a way of converting them to mp3, that doesn't include burining a cd and reripping them as an mp3?

    Liam,
Is there a way of converting them to mp3, that doesn't include burining a cd and reripping them as an mp3?
Song files purchased from iTMS are copy-protected to deter music piracy so that's your only option.
For songs you've ripped into iTunes yourself, you can have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93123
Note the warning that converting from one lossy format to another will result in the loss of some audio fidelity. So try that method out with a few songs before deciding whether you want to proceed or re-import your CD's with the new Import settings.
