Convert AVI/MOV to WMV

I'm looking for a program to convert avi/mov files to wmv, preferably freeware/cheap shareware, so that I can stream movies to my 360. I know there's flip4mac studio pro, but $99 is just a little excessive for something that's basically just a stop gap until Nullriver puts support for mpeg files in Connect360. In any case, any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.
Michael

  • Converting AVI's to WMV

I hope Im asking this in the right place.Im looking for a few suggestions on
how to convert AVI's to WMV I do not have Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks for your time

I have Flip4Mac Pro version ($179). I'm pretty disappointed with it. It basically works but that's about it, my reasons:
    1. Incredibly slow (even the latest version that was supposed to fix this)
    2. Output quality is not great even with the best settings
    3. Limited tweaking of settings
    4. Advanced WMV options is a 50/50 chance it'll playback in Windows Media Player - almost always have to use WMV 9 (standard)
    5. No new updates for some time now
I also purchased this: http://www.mov-avi.com/videoconverter/index23.html to convert MOV to AVI and/or AVI to MOV, but it has issues also especially with HD resolutions (Windows based, I run Bootcamp).
QuickTime Pro on Windows gets flakey around 65% quality level -- static images will tend to flicker (like an overlay).
My fond hope is that FCS 3 will come with ability to export to WMV support the latest Microsoft codecs used in WMV 11.
The best product so far at dealing with WMV source has been Adobe CS4 on Vista x64.

Does anyone know if there is free software available and if so, where would I download from, that would enable me to convert avi, mpeg or wmv files so that I may view video on my imac? Quicktime and Realplayer fail to convert these files.

If you were trying to check out VLC, they no longer support OS9. You can check for an older version but I doubt if there are any. http://www.videolan.org/

I have a bunch of .avi movies from an old Flip Camera that I'd like to import into iMovie. I can play the videos using MPlayerX, but how do I import them into iMovie? iMovie doesn't recognize these files. I'm working on an iMac. Thanks for your help

Thanks I downloaded MPEG and I think I'm able to convert it, but iMovie still isn't recognizing the video even after saved it as a .mov. Maybe there's a wrong format? I'll look into Perian. thank you for your help

QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip can convert them. Some AVIs require that Perian be installed, while others can't be converted in Mac OS X through any means; AVI is a container, not a format.

  • Converting from .mov to wmv... what the best converter?

    Hi,
I regularly have to convert .mov files to WMV files so that they can be embedded in powerpoint presentations. I recently downloaded 'wondershare' converter for approx £30, however it already seems to be broken & no longer converts. Would anyone recommend a reliable converter?
    Many thanks!

Or .. add to iTunes, then use iTunes to convert them. Then sync.
They will be in the "Videos" section of "iPod" on the iPhone.

Hello to Kappy, I'm glad I saw your answer. I've been going crazy trying to get some *wmv files to my iPod Touch. Had even purchased 4Media Converter. It said it converted all 3, but only one actually played on my iPod. I downloaded the HandBrake program and got all 3 of my *wmv files converted and onto my iPod Touch in no time flat. And they all played. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Diane

  • Flip video-FCE Editing and .mov to WMV conversion

We have bought some new Flip video camcorders- i need to edit the footage and then convert them to WMV so that they can be embedded into a powerpoint presentation.
    Here's the problem:
-The flip videos are MP4 files
    - I have been importing these files into FCE, making the appropriate edits & then exporting the final sequence as a .mov file.
    - At this stage i have a .mov that i wish to convert into WMV so that it can be embedded into the presentation. This is where the problem occurs- The video converter goes very strange, fuzzy and as though its a tv is zero reception (signal).
I have been reading up and now realise that FCE does not recognise MP4 files, so i tried:
    - Converting the raw flip video footage from MP4 to .mov
-Bringing this .mov file into FCE
-Exporting the final sequence as an .mov file & then trying to convert to WMV
This is where another problem occurs:
The convertor is only recognising the audio and not the video. I have the audio from the sequence but not the video....
I have tried varies convertors so i know it is not my regestered convertor at fault (wondershare video)
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE BLEEEEEP IS GOING ON & WHAT A SOLUTION MIGHT BE?
    MANY THANKS!!!!!

    Hi David,
Thanks for your response. I have been trying this technique but it doesn't seem to work either. I immediately converted the footage from MP4 to .mov. I then imported the .mov file into final cut express for editing. Once the sequence was ready i exported as a .mov file and then used 'wondershare video convertor' to convert from .mov to WMV. This doesn't seem to solve the problem. In this case i can get the audio but not the visual....
I have taken your advice and downloaded 'flip4mac'. I have just currently got the free trial as i want to know if it works before paying. It seems to open up in quicktime player but wont allow me to export file and convert to wmv....
What exactly is flip4mac good for and how do you use it? I know it runs hand in hand with quicktime, so in this respect isn't your standard convertor?
Do you have any suggestions? Surely it shouldn't be hard?
    Many thanks,
    Ed

  • Is Flip4Mac out for Intel yet? If not would some1 please convert this .mov?

I was able to do it a while ago using Adobe Premeir and Windows Movie Maker (WMM) but Premeir would always change the dimensions of the video waay too large and when I resized it in WMM quality was lost and it was either too small or too large, I couldn't keep the same dimensions of the original film.
    Any help is appreciated.

The latest version (v2.1) is supposed to have universal binary support...
    I hope it helps!

  • Converting .AVI files to use in iMovie using Quicktime Pro

Hi, does anyone know if the current version of Quicktime Pro converts .AVI movie clips into a format that can be used and spliced together in iMovie? If so, is both the sound and video maintained to the same quality?
Finally, if the answers to the above are a "yes", is the same true for iMovie 07 and 08?
    Many thanks
    Andrew

http://perian.org will help QuickTime Pro open nearly any AVI.
You can do basic editing with Pro and then export to DV Stream to use in iMovie 6 or 7.

  • AVI Movies to MPEG4 Format

    Hello,
I have a few .avi movies I would like to convert to watch on my iPod. MPEG Streamclip will not let choose .avi movies to convert and I keep getting "convertion failed" errors using ffmpegx. I need some help and suggestions. Thanks.

    Thanks guys,
I figured it out. QuickTime Pro 7 can convert .avi movies to mpeg4 format. Open the .avi in QuickTime Pro, click on File then click Save as and "Save as a self-contained movie" then click save. QuickTime will convert the file to a .mov format. Open the .mov in QuickTime, click on File than click Export and select Movie to iPod (320x240) than click save. When export is done you will have an mpeg4 file. Open iTunes then drag that file to the Library source list. That's it.

  • Converting into AVI, Mpeg2, and WMV

What's the best way to convert files into AVI, Mpeg2 and WMV from Final Cut Pro? Should I convert into .mov then convert into those from another program? As far as I know, Final Cut only does Mpeg2. I would like to get the best quality.

Concerning AVI, it depends on what codec you want within the AVI container. How will the AVI be used? Is it going to be further compressed on a Windows system, or used in Premiere on a Wiindows computer, or perhaps played from within PowerPoint?
Really, the only good reason to make an AVI any more is to provide compatibility with certain software on the Windows platform that still requires it. Otherwise, Windows Media or Quicktime provide better solutions.
