Convert AVI to .MOV

I am trying to convert an AVI to .Mov on my mac. How do I do that for for free or cheap?
I have Quicktime Pro, Final Cut, etc...but need the tool to do the conversion to .MOV.

I installed again, and it did not work.
( BTW - I made a donation via PayPal to Perian )
I restarted again (after installation) and it does now OPEN the .avi movie I have, but it does not PLAY the movie. Only garbage appears in the QT Player window. No sound either.
For the movie, Properties says:
Video: XVID 23.97599... fps, duration 46:09.01
Audio: MPEG layer 3, duration 45:40.68
My system library > QuickTime >

  • Can't open some .AVI - How to convert .AVI to .MOV?

    Hello
I've got a bunch of AVI clips that I need to convert to .MOV for film scoring purposes in Digital Performer 5.
QTPro won't open these AVIs, how can I still convert them to MOV? Is there any way?
    Thanks
    Chris

Thanks so much for the great advice, I downloaded mpeg streamclip and I have been playing around with converting my video.
There are many different options and I have tried a few but the quality of the picture is slightly pixelated. Can you advise me about the best option to use to get the best quality picture.
I want to be able to edit it in imovie, so I was exporting it to quicktime but there are many other options which would you recommend?
When I exported it to quicktime I tried the following options
    I have tried compression -
    Apple motion jpeg A
png - sound played but picture was frozen and didn't play
Tiff - same thing as png
but there is an endless list and I'm not sure what it all means.
There are also many different frame sizes, I use (4:3) in imovie but it also had a 320 x 240 unscaled I'm not sure what this means?
Are there any other options/boxes I should be altering/checking?
Sorry for asking so many questions.
I'm not really very familiar with all these terms, it's a completely new language to me.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Thanks again for helping me out : )

Converting AVI to MPEG on Windows XP OS

YOu need to learn how to use FCP.  Sorry, no offense needed, and I know it sounds harsh. But from reading that I can tell you have no idea about how to properly import tapeless media into FCP...and don't know what formats FCP works with...nor know what formats the cameras record.  This is all basic stuff you need to know before you edit.  Editing isn't only creative, but lately highly technical as well...you need to know what your software is capable of doing, and how to get the footage into it properly.
You cannot do what you did...directly drag from the cameras into FCP.  No...it needs to be imported, typically with LOG AND TRANSFER...and converted from the shooting format, which typically isn't natively editable in FCP (want native, use Adobe Premiere...).  It needs to be converted to ProRes.  And yes, the file sizes of ProRes are a LOT bigger than the camera originals.  4-5 times larger.  That's how FCP works.
Here's a quick tutorial to get you started.  But then I suggest getting to know the editing system better.

  • Audio failure on converting AVI to Mov files using quicktime pro

I have used quicktime pro for some time to convert avi files to mov files etc for importing into itunes and ipod. However this week all of a sudden the audio fails on exactly 3 minutes and 28 seconds, and does not pick up again. I have not installed anything during that period which would cause this and i'm totally lost.

Do you have Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

  • QuickTime convert .avi to .mov with OS X Mavericks

Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

As has been explained many time before in this forum, AVI is a file container—not a compression format. What you can do with the AVI file depends on what kind of data is stored in the AVI container. For instance, QT X v10.3, QT X v10.4 and QL under Mavericks and Yosemite only play AVI files containing Motion JPEG video along with any supported form of compressed audio like linear PCM. Any other combination of compressed audio and video combination in this file container would would either be unsupported by the AVFoundation in the latest operating systems or force a conversion—i.e., the AVFoundation would pass the file on to the Modernizer routines to see if the content can be converted to a file containing compressed data that is QT compatible.
Depending on the type of compressed data contained in the AVI and the codec support installed on your system, the Modernizer will either terminate its conversion attempt and report that it can't convert the file or it will pass the file on to the Convert routine for conversion. For instance, a common DivX/MP3 AVI file would probably not be converted on a recent operating system with only native codec support. However, if the system has the Perian (or similar) codec package installed, then the Modernizer would recognize that Perian (or other) codec support was available and pass the file on to the Convert routine for a successful conversion. Unfortunately, there are some exceptions. For instance, files containing DTS audio are usually trapped by the Modernizer if Perian is not present but are passed on to the Convert module if it is present since Perian contains DTS codec support. Unfortunately, this support is not compatible with the Convert routine under the two latest versions of Mac OS X and ends up creating an "empty" audio track.
If this is the cause of the problem in your case, then the solution is simple, use a third-party converter as was already mentioned. I would recommend any that use the FFmpeg package for codec support. Many such utilities are available. My personal preference would be the free HandBrake app which includes many presets for the novice user, as well as, advanced features for the prosumer or professional user making customized conversions of specific content and/or for a specific targeted use and can retain chapters, multichannel audio, and/or subtitles (if available in/to the original file) in an anamorphic or non-anamorphic rendering using the basic GUI and/or line-oriented settings. (I.e., properly used, this is a very powerful utility.)

  • AVI to MOV? Any good compression tools?

I need to convert about 100GB of AVI with embedded Canopus Codecs to MOVs so they can be compatible with Final Cut Pro. They wont open by themselves in FCP for some reason. Anybody have advice on software that converts AVI to MOV with out loss of quality?

If it is a proprietry Canopus Codec, I think it is likely that you will need to use a Canopus software product to create a suitable mov file. If the file is a more generally available Codec we use Autodesk Cleaner for file conversion. This takes most formats, except wmv, for input and can output a number of formats and Codecs (including wmv). It is getting a bit long in the tooth now, but still works well for us.
Incidently I am currently doing wmv files on a PC with the Ulead software that came with the DVD burner. It does an OK job and since most of the source is game play footage from various computer games and is often less than perfect to begin with it is usually adequate.

  • How do I convert MP4 file to AVI or MOV using MacBook Pro (2010)

I am 10.6.4 new user on a new MacBook Pro. This is my first Mac computer.
I want to convert a MP4 video file to AVI or MOV file type. How would I do this on my new Mac? Documentation says I have Quicktime X, but I cannot find Quicktime X on my system. When I try to load Quicktime 7 Pro, my system says I have Quicktime X and cannot load Pro. Apple websites say Pro version will allow me to convert the MP4 files. Anyone have any experience or ideas on what I should do? How do I find Quicktime X? Will it do the conversion for me? Thanks

Use MPEG Streamclip, or open the QuickTime Player from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, installing this software if needed.

Any1 knows a good avi to mov converter that is free of charge??
    THX

Does MPEG Streamclip do what you want? Note that AVI is a container, not a file format; the audio and video parts of it may be encoded with any codec.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.
