Convert avi to mpeg

I would like to convert films from.AVI to MPEG. Is there a good easy program?

Yes! They are few of them. I use handbrake ( http://handbrake.fr/ ). Its free program with built in presets for apple products, subtitles support and good online comunity if help needed.  Other programs I know pople use are EM Total Video Converter and AVS Video Converter, but they are payd software. Some people use itunes/quicktimes for making ipod versions of avi movies but hanbrake works best for me.

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • How do I Convert AVI to Mpeg

I have some AVI movies I'd like to view but I get a message "The movie could not be opened." How do I correct this? How do I convert and AVI movie into an mpeg or a viewable movie?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1st generation iMac G5 Updated with Tiger

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might also work.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

Converting AVI to MPEG on Windows XP OS

YOu need to learn how to use FCP.  Sorry, no offense needed, and I know it sounds harsh. But from reading that I can tell you have no idea about how to properly import tapeless media into FCP...and don't know what formats FCP works with...nor know what formats the cameras record.  This is all basic stuff you need to know before you edit.  Editing isn't only creative, but lately highly technical as well...you need to know what your software is capable of doing, and how to get the footage into it properly.
You cannot do what you did...directly drag from the cameras into FCP.  No...it needs to be imported, typically with LOG AND TRANSFER...and converted from the shooting format, which typically isn't natively editable in FCP (want native, use Adobe Premiere...).  It needs to be converted to ProRes.  And yes, the file sizes of ProRes are a LOT bigger than the camera originals.  4-5 times larger.  That's how FCP works.
Here's a quick tutorial to get you started.  But then I suggest getting to know the editing system better.

Hello to Kappy, I'm glad I saw your answer. I've been going crazy trying to get some *wmv files to my iPod Touch. Had even purchased 4Media Converter. It said it converted all 3, but only one actually played on my iPod. I downloaded the HandBrake program and got all 3 of my *wmv files converted and onto my iPod Touch in no time flat. And they all played. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Diane

  • Converting avi, mpeg, and wmv video

Does anyone know if there is free software available and if so, where would I download from, that would enable me to convert avi, mpeg or wmv files so that I may view video on my imac? Quicktime and Realplayer fail to convert these files.
    Thank You.

What is tyhe best video /audio converter to use on a Mac? To convert
Convert MPEG to AVI, FLV to AVI, F4V, and Quicktime MOV to AVI. to convert from AVI to MPEG or other major formats?

I prefer using Mac Video Converter software to do video conversion. I convert Quicktime MOV to AVI so that I can play the video on PS3.

  • AVI to MPEG-2 converter

Does anybody know of a good AVI to MPEG-2 converter for Linux?  I need to convert an AVI to MPEG-2 so that I can burn it as a DVD video.

Absolutely correct, of course, but if you want to make it just a little easier, try tovid, or the anytovcd.sh script that comes with mjpegtools,  which, despite its name, defaults to DVD-friendly format. If you go for for anytovcd, you'll need bfr and y4mscaler from the AUR.

  • Convert quicktime to avi or mpeg 2

I have made a short movie with FCE. The client wants it on disc in either AVI or MPEG 1 or 2. Have tried exporting to quicktime and then saving as AVI, but it saves as .mov What am I doing wrong?
    Any help much appreciated

Hi again, I have now managed to change it from .mov to .avi by simply going to the hard drive, selecting it and changing the extension.
I have one other problem though, my file is 15 seconds long - 28.3 MB and so quality is not brilliant. The client will allow the file to get up to 600MB. How can I increase the size, and therefore quality of my video?
Do I have to go back to FCE?
    Thanks in advance

  • Converting AVI DV to QuickTime DV. Do you lose quality?

I posted this in the FCE forum but wonder if any DV gurus in here might have a definite answer.
I have a some dv streams in avi format that have been captured using Sony Vegas from DV tapes. The files suffixed .avi will not open in Quicktime, but I found MPEG streamclip and VLC could read them, and they report that the DV codec is DVSD. I have converted them in MPEG streamclip using both the Export to Quicktime and Export to DV. The result codec for the DV is DVSL. With the Export to Quicktime, I have made a .mov Apple DV (PAL)file at 100% quality, the result codec is DVCP. Both Dv and .mov video looks the same the same and works fine in FCE. With the Export to DV command it is a straightfoward conversion and also works fine, but FCE wants to render the audio from the DV clip when placed in a sequence. In MPEG streamclip if I compare a frame of the original AVI, the DV convert and the .MOV convert it looks basically identical.
The BIG question is does anyone know if am losing quality doing it this way and what the DVSD that codec Vegas is using against the Mac's DVSL and DVCP codecs mean?
Is it better to convert to .mov apple dv files so FCE doesn't need to render audio, or use the convert to DV and render the audio in FCE? I realise that it would be simpler to capture straight into FCE, but I'd like to know if converting in MPEG streamclip is fine or if it should be avoided. I am trying this because the person shooting the footage can capture and then hand the media to me for editing. Vegas is supposed to be QuickTime compatible so I don't quite understand why the files don't open in QT on the mac.
Also, is it the case the a Firewire captured DV stream has no compression at all and these codecs only come into play when being played on a computer and for rendering, so if MPEG streamclip copies the DV stream intact and just uses apples codecs for playback, then there should be no loss of quality?

Some people have reported success with DivX avi and this beta version of DivX fusion with Tiger/QT7. If it doesn't work for you then you may have to work with ffmpeg:

  • Converted .avi files to .mov in quicktime, can't transfer to ipod.

  • Covert VHS tape to avi or mpeg or wmv

I need to convert VHS tapes into files, not a DVD!
What is the way to turn the captured VHS footage on the PE7 timeline into an avi or mpeg or wmv and have it not fuzzy and the file small enough for one DVD?
My customer wants to edit the files using another software so can't use the DVD files I normally produce by just burning the DVD.
They said they need the files to be one of these:
    .asf
    .avi
    .dib
    .fpx
    .mov
    .mp2
    .mp3
    .mpeg
    .mpg
    .pct
    .pcx
    ,.png
    .ras
    .stv
    .tga
    .wav
    .wma
    .wmv
the avi was GIGANTIC I tied, the wmv was grainy

For editing, you may not have both small size and high quality
DV AVI Type 2 with 16bit 48khz sound is the best there is for conversion from VHS for editing
Anything else is HIGHLY compress and designed for playback only, not for editing
Tell your customer to provide you with a hard drive to store and ship the files
