Convert Avid keyboard settings into FCP?

Hey all. Does anybody have an idea about how to export my Avid Adrenaline keyboard layout settings and import it into FCP? I prefer FCP, but I use Avid at work, and am having a tough time keeping up with the differences in hotkey commands. Any ideas?
-Rob

I used to have to go back and forth two...and it took a little bit to adjust my thinking each time. I haven't found a way to map all the Avid commands to the FCP board..because they really have different commands for most things, as they both do things differently. What I ended up doing is mapping both with similar commands in the same spots. But the trim commands, effects commands and more all ALL different.
Thank goodness I am only on one machine now.

  • Avid keyboard settings in Premiere 6

I am trying to use the Avid keyboard settings in Premiere 6.   I have gotten a few to work, but some, particularly CUT, command X, is not working.  I have tried this on a two machines on different sequences.
Has anyone had any success using the Avid keyboard settings?

I have been struggling with this for a few days now, working around the fact that I could not get a keystroke to "cut".
With some help from fellow editors, I think I have figured this out.
My mistake was thinking that "cut" (command X) under the file menu should actually do something on the timeline.  It does not.  What you really want is to program "extract" as a keyboard stroke.  On Avid, it is "x".  On Premiere, it is the apostrophe.  I am guessing that "cut" applies to text on clips or bins, not editing on the timeline.  What is even more confusing is that the other commands under the "edit" menu (copy, paste, paste insert) work on the timeline.  Not very logical in my opinion.
Hope this helps someone else struggling with this problem.

  • Problem Importing Importing Avid Mov File Into FCP

    Hello all,
I had transitioned into this issue off an older thread I had, with a different topic. So I figured it was smarter to just make it it's own thread, since it's become it's own issue.
I am editing the core of a project on Final Cut Pro 6. A portion of the footage that was shot for this project though, was captured on a PC into Avid Media Composer 3.0, and therefore, converted to MXF format.
I am running both Final Cut Pro 6 (FCP 6) and Avid Media Composer 3.0 (AMC3) on my Macbook Pro, so I was able to import this MXF footage into AMC3. That was the easy part. The hard part, has been knowing how to properly export it, so I can then, properly import it into FCP6.
Important detail about the FCP6 System Settings:
    - *The sequence preset is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24*
In the Avid, when I go to export a small 1 min clip (as a test), these are the Quicktime options I am given:
    Fast-Export Quicktime NTSC
    Fast-Export Quicktime PAL
    Make New - QuickTime Reference
    Pro Tools QuickTime (ref)
    QuickTime Reference
    Quicktime Reference DV Codec
    Send To QT Movie
None of them were seeming to work. I was getting this message:
"Long GOP media can not be exported using same as source. Please select a custom resolution or transcode to an I-frame only resolution."
*Send To QT Movie* seems to be the only one that works. But I then had to go in and customize it, making my own Saved preset for this.
I've now so far tried this with 4 custom presets, and while all of them are able to export and play / look fine on my desktop..... none of them import correctly into FCP6. They'll play as clips... but completely stuttery and unusable. I'll then drop them into a sequence, and they'll play for about 3 seconds and then I'll get this message:
    "Warning - Dropped Frames
One or more frames were dropped during playback.
    If this occurs frequently, try:
    - Turning off 'Unlimited RT'
    - Lowering your compression data rate.
    - Closing open sequences.
    - Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks.
    - Increasing the speed of your system and/or disk drives and/or network connection."
Now, I've also gotten a message about the projects needing to have the same capture preset, but I can't replicate it at the time of this post. Though, I'm sure this is probably the root of the problem.
Here's why: In AMC3, with my custom export preset, I notice that Avid supports the DVCPRO codecs, but doesn't have the exact one I'm using in FCP6.
    Here's what I have in my AMC3:
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC (this is the one I'm using, and have tweaked the frame rate to 23.98)
    DVCPRO - PAL
    DVCPRO HD 1080i50
    DVCPRO HD 1080i60
DVCPRO HD 1080p25 (this one is close...)
    DVCPRO HD 1080p30
    DVCPRO HD 720i50
    DVCPRO HD 720i60
    DVCPRO50 - NTSC
    DVCPRO50 - PAL
Now, you'll remember that my sequence preset in FCP6 is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24.
Because this doesn't exist in Avid, I went with DVCPRO HD 1080p25 and just customized the frame rate to 23.98.
    Still no cigar though.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should further customize the Avid codecs? Or is there even a way to just download more Avid DVCPRO codecs so I can find one with 1080p24?
Sorry for such a long post. I like to be thorough.

    Hi Kyle,
    Just some more backstory:
This was a two day shoot.
    - One Day 1 of the shoot (Saturday), we shot with the Sony camera, on Sony DVC tapes (MiniDV). This was about 20 gigs worth of media shot that day. That footage was later captured onto an Avid MC 3.0 in MXF format. (I still have it all raw on my passport drive if you need further info about those files)
    - On Day 2 of the shoot (Sunday), we got the camera we wanted all along for the shoot -- the Panasonic HVX200. Therefore, all of Day 2 was shot on P2 cards, converted on a Macbook Pro, and then put onto an external harddrive. This was about 80 gigs of media.
Right now, when I watch the Sunday footage (Sony) on FCP6, I do indeed see faint horizontal lines on the canvas, when free-framed and at 100%. They're not terrible... but they're there. (I'm not great at this, so if you need total confirmation, I can upload you a large rez screenshot so you can decipher if the interlaced lines are there)
Now, I just checked this out on the Sunday footage as well (the Panasonic P2 card footage which wasn't converted, but imported directly into FCP6, without need for the Avid as the middle-man), and I see the same faint lines on this as well.
Both pieces of media (the original Panasonic footage and the converted Sony footage) are at 29.97FPS. Both are at the same Compressor now (DVCPRO HD 1080p30) per your instructions . Meaning, the Pansonic footage brought into FCP6 had that as a preset from the moment I installed the program and was asked to choose my project settings..... and once you explained to me how to look for this, I then sought to match it on the Avid end, and changed the EXPORT settings on the Avid files to that codec.
So both sources medias match now in FCP6. They also play now without stutter.
But they both do have those lines. Albeit, faint, but I'm concerned about them now.
So I think this definitely has to do with my Final Cut Audio/Video settings:
My Sequence Preset is: DVCPRO HD - 1080p24
My Capture Preset is: 1080p24 48KHz
Should the Sequence Preset be changed to p30?
And if so... will I then have to recapture all the Panasonic footage back in? (I'd lose all my log notes and shot names).
Or, can I just delete the two timelines, change the sequence setting, and then redrag them back in?
Thanks for all your help, Kyle.

  • Convert Media 100 bin into FCP 4.5?

OK, this is a long shot but here it goes. I have an old project created on a Media 100. I now work with FCP 4.5. Put simply, I need to bring two media bins created in Media 100 into my FCP system so I can redigitize the media. This would save me a lot of time re-logging. I do not have access to the old Media 100 system. Is there any conversion program or method I can use to convert the bin into an EDL or import it directly into FCP? I have tried importing the bin, but of course it would not read the file.
    Thanks for any help.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I figured it might be a hopeless cause but I thought I'd try anyway. I have tried to open the bins in word/text edit/etc but have come up empty. Actually, text edit opened it so that I could at least decipher some in/out points but it was such a gargled mess that it was useless.
When I was making the transfer to FCP and still had access to my Media 100, I was able to place the raw clips in a timeline and export an edl from Media 100. Then, importing the edl into FCP worked great. It just didn't bring in my tape #'s, but my timecode was good so it was no problem.
Gary, I'll email you the two bins. If you could make them into EDL's, I would owe you one. Thanks.

  • Quicktimes from AVID into FCP

I exported a final piece from AVID Adrenaline as an uncompressed Quicktime. I took that QT to my Mac (G5, OS 10.4.1, FCP 5.1.4), and imported it into FCP. The resulting clip has audio, but the video is completely white. The QT also does not play on Quicktime 7.1.2, though it did play on the Mac Quicktime 7.1.2 on the Adrenaline system.
I dug around, and it appears that the problem might be related to the AVID codec for QT exports (which I don't quite understand why there would be a particular AVID codec if it's uncompressed). I went to the AVID sight and downloaded the codec they have for Intel macs and installed it. That did not have any effect. I gather from the posts I see on the internet that this is a problem that can have many unrelated reasons... any ideas? Or is there an AVID export codec that I should use on Adrenaline that is more consistent with FCP?
Thanks again in advance for your wisdom,
    Andrew

I don't know your timeline codec in Avid, but I had the same problem. The thing is that avid codecs are "special", so special that avid is the only one that can read them. I was working with dvcpro timeline and if the "use avid codecs" was checked in the export settings it wouldn't play in fcp. So don't check the "use avid codecs" if you plan to export to fcp. One workaround I found few years back was to install avid free dv and then I got the avid codecs to work but it seems that avid has stopped the avid free dv project Hope this helps.

  • FCP keyboard like Avid Keyboard

I’ve been looking all over for 2 things in FCP that I use to use a lot in Avid.
    Extend Edit.
I found a key called “extend edit” in FCP but it doesn’t work for me. I mapped it to my keyboard and it doesn't seem to stretch out the select source to the in point or out point.
    Toggle Source Tracks.
Like our number keys 4-7 on the Avid. Toggling the source audio and video tracks so that you can cut it in to the correct track in the timeline. I'm talking about linking the source video to timeline video track or source audio to timeline audio. So I can hit a button, have them link up, and overwrite an edit in my timeline.
    thanks

As Steve said extend edit works differently. Instead of looking at the IN or OUT point set FCP looks to where the time marker is for the selected edit. Kinda the same only different!
As for the V and A select keys, since you can map almost anything in FCP you can map those keys to where you want them. FCP is a bit different in it's way of selecting tracks though. Toggle Auto Select is close to what in Avid is turning tracks on and off.
I have mapped a FCP very close to my Avid settings (here's a pic on my Flickr account) as I think an Avid keyboard is much more efficient.

  • Paid job: convert .stl file into .xml to import into FCP. Anyone?

I need someone to convert my two .stl files (subtitles) exported from DVD SP and convert them into files (.xml?) compatible with Final Cut Pro. I need to Import these files into FCP and burn a Quicktime file with subtitles.
I can pay someone (not millions!) to do this, since I have no clue and anything I was suggested doesn't work.
    Thanks
    Paula

    Can anyone help me?
I absolutely need to import the subtitles into Final Cut and re-writing all of them manually would take forever.
Please let me know if there is any program I need to use.
    Thanks for all tips

  • Importing Avid Media into FCP

I am taking media from an Avid Adrenaline system and want to bring it into FCP to cut. However, the disk w/Avid QTs won't appear on my desktop. It plays fine on the Windows-based Avid (XP, I believe), but my Mac won't see it. I've tried downloading Avid codecs and putting them in my Quicktime Library as recommended by the Avid website, but that doesn't seem to work. I've been told I should try exporting out of Avid using Sorenson or H.264 codecs. Anyone with experience on this so I quit wasting time?
    Thanks
    IMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) FCP 5.0.1

Actually, my experience was that it was QT 7.1.6 that broke the version of the Avid codec I had been using before, not a particular FCP update. I have not tried the codec linked to earlier in this thread.
I have noticed a unique color shift in both luma and chroma when importing Avid codec clips. It takes two color correction filters to correct for this, but I have saved this pair as favorites, and can apply them at the end of the edit.
I would much rather import the clips than recapture, as we're talking about days of recapturing, as opposed to a couple hours of importing. If I can get the codec supported, and I know how to correct for the color shift, I have no qualms about using the Avid media. My question has more to do with whether I will be able to see individual clips in the finder to attempt to import, or whether the media files will be in some format QT and FCP will not recognize, and if so, whether there is anything I can do about it. I don't expect any of the Avid logging info to come along, and I know that even if I were to have Avid editor export a batch list, a reconnect would likely be impossible, and I'd be looking at recapture.
If it were a question of simply creating new QT wrappers on the files, we'll be up against another shortcoming of FCP - the Batch Export process does nont allow the creation of reference movies...
Anyone know about what the Avid media folders look like in the finder?
    Thanks much -
    Max

  • CONVERTING and IMPORTING .VOB files into FCP?

    Hi.
I made a dvd of an old vhs tape of mine using a Sony consumer vhs-->dvd component.
Haven't had any trouble in the past using MPEG streamclip to convert .vob files and import into fcp (from dvd's NOT made on this particular machine) --but for some reason, this dvd doesn't seem to contain those files.
The icon of the dvd appears as a folder on my desktop with a small red circle on it.
The dvd plays fine on my G5, but the folder appears to be empty when opened.
    I'm stumped.
    Anyone?

Buy or hire one of these: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcprofessionalfamily then you can capture the tape directly into FCP as a QuickTime .mov that uses the DV codec.
Don't forget to switch the *Device Control* setting in Log & Capture to *Non-Controllable Device* first.

  • H.264 into FCP convert to Apple ProRes?

    Hello -
I'm attempting to find out how to go about importing a H.264 movie file into my AppleProRes based project and
edit a small video and audio section into it, then re-export it for the purposes of lining it up with a separate mix - all of this is to be
    screened in two days.
At first I thought I could just cut the H.264 file, render and export that - but it needs a bit of time to render
and then I thought - should I convert the footage and how should I convert the footage?
Any ideas?  The reason behind all of this is to save time with a smaller (4 gig file = H.264) as opposed to my original 136 gig file.
There's no time to go back to the original to make small changes.
Every and any idea is appreaciated!
    Thanks!!

    Hi again,
I only have FCP 7, so I have no choice.  I was attempting to cut corners with a few minor tweaks in a
feature length movie (adding one credit) . . . so I thought I could import my 4 gig (the unworkable H.264) version of the movie into FCP, edit a credit in, then re-export and compress it all into the same 4 gig file size.  All of this is an attempt to save time on the export/compress side. Otherwise I need nearly 24 hours to export and compress a feature, just to add one credit.
My MPEG is still converting - so I'll see if this is more manageable!
As always, thanks for your help Shane!!

  • Settings required for importing a QT Screen recording into FCP

I have just recorded a screen recording using QT and need to import it into FCP. I have tried, but an error message comes up saying FCP can not read the format. File error 1 - What do I need to do when exporting out of QT so I can import and edit in FCP??

QuickTime Player's Screen recording function makes H264 video clips You can't use those in FCP.
Convert to ProRes LT using either Compressor or MPEG Streamclip.

  • How to import images of websites into FCP....any ideas?

    Hi,
I was asked to cut several trailers for an award show. Which is nice. However, they have this category about "best website", and of course, they want to use images of those websites, the banners, the headlines and so on. I don't mean single images found on that website, but rather the site from head to toe, from top to bottom, left to right.
I tried saving the websites from Safari as a PDF, and then convert them into a TIFF, import into FCP and it works....but it looks less than desirable.
So even I have come to the conclusion that there is my way of doing this, and that there is a proper way of doing it. Does anybody have an idea how to do this at a reasonable resolution? I guess they want me to do a bit of Ken Burns as well, so the images would have to be larger than SD resolution.
Thanks in advance for your help,

The tiffs are probably the best solution but they are going to be bigger than the actual Web sites' graphics.
Here's what I'd so: Tell your client (Is this a paid gig?) to give you the graphics they want you to use. Here's why. They'll go download it all and save it in one format.
How will these be shown? What's your production format? It won't do much good to overresolve your sequence settings and doing so will drive up your processing times tremendously. You will need some blur on those tiffs. Another thing you want to do is experiment if you can with the display venue. KNow what your output is going to be shown on and insist or demand a chance to test it.

  • Converting a nested sequence into a single clip

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to convert a nested sequence into a single clip?
I have captured several forty minute mini-dv tapes and there were a lot of timecode breaks, my user preferences made FCP generate a new clip every time the timecode changed.
I like to make subclips from a single master clip when I edit so I added all the broken clips into a sequence and nested them which has created a single clip within a sequence, but it has labeled the footage as a 'sequence' in the browser as opposed to a 'clip'.
I think I need to strip the footage of its timecode but to not want to have to print to a blank mini-dv cassette and then re-import, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be a great help.
    Many thanks.

  • Mac Avid to Color and FCP

A freind of mine--yes, honestly, there is a friend--has built a project in a Mac Based Avid Program. He no needs to take it to another person who will color correct it using Color in FCP. I am Mac only literate and don't have an answer.
Can anybody give me some insight on how it needs to be transfered?

You will have to recapture. Best to use Automatic Duck to help. Export an AAF from Avid, use the Duck to import that into FCP...it retains a lot of information from the Avid, pretty amazing.
    www.automatic.duck.com
Now, while the Duck can export ref QTs to allow FCP to see the media...you need to have the Avid codecs installed for this to work...but then you cannot send this to COLOR, as COLOR doesn't work with Avid media. I have tried then using the Media Manager to convert to ProRes, but that didn't work out well. The Avid original MXF files might be the issue, but it just didn't work. You will have to recapture the media.
    But it is pretty easy.
