Convert Catalog (PSE 5 to PSE 7) Issue with Tags!

Upon installing PSE7 and attempting to convert my PSE5 catalog I ran into a problem that I had not seen described anywhere else. The information obtained from the various other discussions/forums helped point me in the right direction (conversion logs, etc.) for performing a root-cause analysis and eventually correcting the problem. I wanted to share this info with others to hopefully help prevent somebody else from dealing with this same frustration.
After installing PSE7 and attempting to execute the conversion process it would fail immediately. I attempted all the normal documented corrections (repair catalog, reconnect photos, backup/restore) with no luck. Upon reviewing the conversion logs I noticed that the failure appeared to occur while the conversion was attempting to process the tags! Interesting, as none of the online items I read had mentioned any problems with tags during the conversion process. I opened the suspect catalog in Microsoft Access 2007 and focused on the table named "FolderTable" which appeared to contain the information pertaining to the tags. Comparing the offending tag (identified as the last tag attempted by the conversion process) with the other entries I noticed two columns appeared to have invalid entries.
fFolderLongitude
fFolderLatitude
Both columns contained the value "1.#QNAN". No idea where those values came from but the rest of the rows had valid numeric values. Within Access I modified the values of these columns to "-181" and "-91" respectfully as these appeared to be the default values for many of the other rows/entries. I exited Access and re-attempted the catalog conversion. Success.......the catalog converted without any problems after making these modifications. Hope this helps others....
One final note, I've been in IT developing software for computers for over 20 years and can say without queston that after dealing with this situation and reading some of the issues encountered by others that Adobe has done a pathetic job on the code for the conversion process!

Thanks much for providing such great detail. I haven't heard of the conversion failing before during tag conversion.

  • Unusual issue with tag engine and BELKIN USB to Ethernet adapter??

I have an .scf file with 72 tags and several tag groups in it. If I open the tag engine without the usb adapter, I can read the tag group names with the get group list.vi. The tag group names are listed in black letters when wired to an indicator. When I plug in the usb ethernet adapter, immediately the group tag names are greyed out in the indicator without even running the vi. If I put a tag constant on the block diagram and try to select a tag name with the pointer, no tagnames pop up. It worked yesterday and my IT. department sent down a shockwave and flash5 update download when I booted up this morning. anyone have any ideas??

I am still seeing the tag groups disappear when I start the tag engine on labview7.0. I have several other programs running at the same time, KEPWARE, PROWORX NXT, USB to ethernet adapter. This is on a win2000 machine.

Yes - I can run both versions on my PC.  But I really would like to have all of my pictures in the same catalog.
You can't merge catalogs (even PSE13 ones) in any PSE version (only LR can do that). So, converting catalogs is not the solution to your problem.
Since you have PSE5 working on your computer and your images also, the solution is to 'write metadata to files in PSE5) and to re-import the images in the PSE13 catalog. That won't duplicate your image files and you'll lose albums/collections, stacks and version sets, but you'll recover tags, captions and ratings.
To be able to re-import the files indexed in PSE5, you may have to move them to a new master folder.
I am not sure what your problem with the conversion may be. It's quite possible that the resulting catalog.pse13db is ok and that the issue lies in the ability to open it in the PSE13 organizer.
As stated by dj_page, double clicking on that file should open the organizer with the new catalog. You could test that by creating a dummy catalog in PSE13 and importing a small batch of photos. Locate the path of the catalog with the menu Help/system info. Copy the catalog.pse13db in another folder and the 'double click' way to open the organizer with that moved catalog database.

  • Failed to convert Catalog (PS Album 2.0 to PSE 7.0)

When attempting to convert My Catalog from Photoshop Album 2 to PSE 7, the following prompt is reported "The conversion operation failed. try repairing the catalog with the software that created it and retry conversion"
I have attempted to repair/uninstall & reinstall PS Album but the problem still remains. From tips picked up from the other posts, I can confirm there are no missing files in the original catalog. I have also attempted without success to repair and optimise the catalog via File\catalog and remove all 'Creations' from the catalog.
    The pse-conversion file states "unable to process tag p:6 "Shared - Incoming", a=000b0004 fa=04 ia=0b parent=0 next=7 firstchild=0
p:7 -> discarding top level history tag" (or words similar to) on several occasions. What does this mean/is it relevant?/how can I correct it? (see attached log conversion file)
Failing to resolve the above problem will mean retagging over 4000 images - a propect I really wish to avoid!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was having problems with the conversion from PSA2 to PSE7, mainly with 2 things. First, I was gettings some "poison files" as suddenly one year of photos went from ca 4 GB to 13 GB in size.
The second problem and my biggest problem was that I had burnt a couple of years to a dvd. In PSA2 these files were removed from my HDD, there were thumbnail files stored in a folder called /Proxies/Photos 2004-2006 and in the organiser these files showed up as low resolution thumbanils and with a gold disc symbol, showing that they were stored offline. If I double clicked on a picture the dvd disc was asked for.
Upon upgrading to PSE7 everything was converted correctly except my offline files. In PSE7 there is a symbol showing that files is offline, but the picture is not there ie it is not connected. Following the advice in this thread I tried instead to first upgrade to PSE5, but the same problem occurs. Funny enough, the "posion files" does not seem to be there, 2008 is now 4 GB is size .
My question is why does PSE not upgrade my offline pictures? How do remedy this? Should I reconnect the missing files to the Proxies folder or to the dvd that contains the files? If I choose either of these will that not restore the files on to my HDD or just the link?
Another thing. Can any of the versions of PSE burn to DVD-DL or is it still only DVDR that is allowed?

  • PSE 11 and PS CC issues with import/open and saving

    Good afternoon,
I have had PSE 11 for several months but have hardly touched it due to two problems. When I try to import images into the organizer, if I choose any location other than the default that opens, the whole program freezes and I have to force quit to get out of it. I have been able to open files by going to      File - get photos and videos - by searching....When I can get them, they load at snail speed. I've done a few projects and when I go to save, I have the same issue. This has caused me to loose several projects as again, the whole program freezes and I have to force quit.
I just signed up for the photographer's black Friday deal and downloaded PS. I am having the same issue. If I go to open a file in PS and choose anywhere other than the default location, the box closes immediately and I can't get anything to open. Thankfully, the program doesn't freeze up like PSE 11, but this is so frustrating. I have Lightroom and have issues there too. What is going on!
    Thanks
    JP

I am having a similar issue with photoshop CC. I am on a mac and just upgraded to maverick (
OS X 10.9 (13A603)) and since the update any time I want to open or place a file it closes the window.
Something worse happened on windows 8.1 when I upgraded that OS Illustrator and photoshop just crashed once it was open. I had to uninstall and reinstall both applications and it worked.
I tried the same thing on the mac and uninstalled photoshop, then reinstalled it but I that did not resolve the issue. I have a video of what it is doing. The two workarounds I found was to drag the images into photoshop or create a new file then go to file open which you will see in the video.
If there is a fix for this please let me know, it is very frustrating!

  • Issues with Adobe PSE 12 and Premier Elements 12 plus DiskWarrior 4.4

Since upgrading to the final version of OS X 10.10 Yoesemite I have issues with Adobe PSE 12 and Premier Elements 12 plus DiskWarrior 4.4. I don't recall their being any issues while I went through the Beta testing process.  The Adobe products (PSE and PE) give me a configuration message "error 16" and it tells me to uninstall and reinstall. I have done this a few times/  It seems to go through the whole install process until the startup where it crashes.  I downloaded PSE 11 and at least it starts up but I haven't used it to do anything.  Also DiskWarrior 4.4 does not load up from the hard drive anymore (error message) and when I boot it up from disk is doesn't give me the option of correcting permission when repairing files and folders.
At lease all of otheother software including Photoshop Lightroom 5.6 seem to be working.
    Very sad

    Barbara,
Yes, I accessed the "updates" menu from the Help pull-down menu.  I also accessed the updates using the Mac Terminal application with results shown in my original post.  Regardless of whether I used the Help menu or the Mac Terminal app, the AAM tool still responded with:
    Update Failed
       Updates could not be applied
The error log file may help you in identifying the problem.  The, try updating again.  If the problems persist, contact customer support for further assistance.
The error log file read as follows:
       Photoshop Camera Raw 8.5
There was an error installing this update. Please quit and try again later. Error Code: U44M1I210
Looking at the the output of the Mac Terminal app, it shows:
... hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file systems
       Is this relevant?
Regarding your follow-up message pointing to:
Update 12.1 installation errors | Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements,
the files referenced in this link are present, are correctly named, and they are in the correct locations, so it would appear that these issues are not related to the ACR 8.5 update problem

  • Issue with PSE 9 Editor

Running PSE 9 on a new iMAc with 8 Gig memory, 1 TB hard drive.  When trying to save an edited file, the Editor consistently becomes unresponsive when I try to close the saved file requiring that I force Editor to close.  Not only with not Editor close the saved file but the Editor cannot be closed normally.

I appreciate the help, I found out how to change paper type and it seems to work great.  The remaining question, when I've finished editing an image and attempt to "Save" or "Save As" the system shows a box "Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 quit unexpectedly".  If I go to "Reopen" it reopens the PSE at the organizer level and hasn't saved the image.  Also at this level, "Save" is grayed out and unavailable.  I sure appreciate someone that seems to know a lot more than the "Techs" at Adobe.Don

The second thing, opening the print dialog box does not open the same one as Windows, and allows no selection of paper type.
That is just a difference between macs and windows. On a mac, you choose the paper and print quality in the OS X system print window that opens after you click the Print button in the PSE window:

  • Problems converting catalog from PSE8 to PSE 12

I've upgraded from PSE8 to PSE12.  I've just tried converting one of my 10 or so catalogs - all are stored in custom locations on an external drive, since the total file size for all my images is larger than my C: drive's capacity - with awful results:
    a.     there is now a copy of my folder structure and all files from the catalog in a folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs.  Not at all what I want, and if I convert the rest of my catalogs it will fail when C: drive becomes full.
    b.     my converted catalog has no ratings on any images.
    c.     my tags and tag heirarchy have disappeared.
Each of these issues is completely unacceptable.  There are literally thousand of hours of work in all my catalogs, which I cannot repeat.  How can I convert my previous catalogs to PSE12 versions, retaining all ratings, tags and tag structure, and without duplicating every image file?
    Rob

I had already tried optimizing the catalog, repariing the catalog, re-indexing visual simularity data and making sure there were no missing files.  Basically everything I found at: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upgrade-elements.html
I also used the Mac OS X Disk Utility to make sure there were no disk errors.
I have Parallels Desktop running on my Mac so I installed the Windows version of PSE12 and used it to convert the catalog of 63,000 pictures in under an hour.  That put the catalog in a new location so I just moved the catalog from the Windows location to the Mac location.  Now PSE12 on the Mac can access the new catalog and is working as expected.

  • Any Invalid Serial Number Installation Issue With PSE 12 - PE 12 Windows or Mac ?

    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5711110#5711110
Today I went from Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12 tryouts to the purchased boxed versions that came with two installation discs. One of the discs was for Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12 Windows and the other for these versions on Mac.
On Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit desktop computer, I was hit with Invalid Serial Number for the installation of Photoshop Elements 12 which I did first. Tried 4X, double and triple checking to make sure this was not "user error". It was not. On the 5th try, the purchased serial number was accepted and the installation went to a successful completion.
Tonight a friend alerted me to reports of similar happening for a lot of Photoshop Elements 12 Mac users. See the link posted at the top of my post.
At no time did I see this problem with Premiere Elements 12 installation from the same disc as for Photoshop Elements 12 installation.
Afterward, I installed these programs with the same installation disc on my laptop computer Windows 8 64 bit, I did not have any problems with either installation.
At this time, I do not know if this Invalid Serial Number is elusive to Photoshop Elements 12 or not.
If anyone is experiencing this problem with Premiere Elements, please let us know.
From the link above, it would appear that Adobe is working on the issue.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
In my case, I had the network firewalls and anti-virus disabled when I did the installs of Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 64 bit as well as Windows 8 64 bit.
I was fortunate in that a 5th try of the serial number entry for the Photoshop Elements 12 install on Windows 7 64 bit was successful, so I did not have to do the computer restart and retry of the install with the purchased serial number. But, good to keep in mind, just in case.
It is ironic...last time around I got caught up in the Shared Technologies issues with Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 8 64 bit, not Windows 7 64 bit. But, in that case, I did find my way eventually to a successful install on Windows 8 64 bit. This time around it was Windows 7 64 bit where the glitch occurred, but, for me, only for Photoshop Elements 12.
But, could you clarify...are you generalizing that Photoshop Elements 12 Mac Invalid Serial Number is due to server issues and Invalid Serial Number encountered by Photoshop Elements 12 Windows is  "online - due to some firewall or network issues"?
Just getting prepared for if and when more questions on Invalid Serial Number might pop up in this forum.
    Thanks.

  • Catalog conversion error PSE 6 to 7

I am running Windows Vista and I am in the process of upgrading from PSE 6 to 7. I have 3 catalogs; 2 converted just fine, the third will not convert. It is "My Catalog". It fails instantly upon selecting the convert button. As instructed, I went back to PSE6 and repaired the catalog multiple times with and without optimizing. I cannot find a coversion error message as other posts have referred to. It also continues to show up on the regular list of catalogs; I do not have to check previously converted catalogs to see it listed.
I was also able to create a new catalog and import some photos with no issue. If anyone can offer suggestions on how to get this last catalog converted, I would certainly appreciate it. I have even un- and re-installed PSE7 twice to no avail.
I expected this upgrade to be simpler than going from 5 to 6 which was complicated by switching to a new computer and changing from XP to Vista but this is proving to be equally as frustrating!
Thanks for any advice and Happy New Year!
    -Barb

    Barb,
Glad you got it converted. I reread the thread and did some tests you were right that it was a disk-space problem. Its another bug in PSE, and youve still got some careful cleaning-up to do.
Your PSE 6 catalog is stored in the folder:
    C:\Program Data\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
You appear to have your photos stored in subfolders of My Catalog. Most likely this occurred when you used backup/restore to move from XP/PSE 5 to Vista/PSE 6 last year the restore will place all your photos within the catalog folder.
When PSE 7 converts a catalog, the first thing it does is try to make a copy of the entire catalog folder, including any subfolders containing your photos. As you discovered, this will fail immediately (with no helpful error message) if there isnt enough free disk space.
However, if the copy succeeds, it then converts the PSE 6 catalog database file (catalog.psedb). But the new PSE 7 catalog still refers to the
original location of your photos, in your PSE 6 catalog folder:
    C:\Program Data\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
The copies placed in your PSE 7 catalog folder arent being used they were needlessly copied by PSE 7. So you most likely have 56 GB of disk space consumed by unused copies of all your photos.
To clean this up, you can first verify the locations of the photos in the PSE 7 catalog by using the Organizers Properties window. Do they indeed refer to the location of your PSE 6 catalog folder?
If so, then use Help > System Info to find the location of the PSE 7 catalog folder. Then you can delete all the subfolders of that folder containing the unused copies of your photos. To be extra conservative, I would first move those folders somewhere else on your disk, and then in PSE 7 give the File > Reconnect > All Missing, to verify that they indeed arent being referenced by the PSE 7 catalog. Once youve verified that, you can safely delete them.
I'll file a bug report with Adobe.

  • Import PSE 3 catalog & images into PSE 9

    Hi
I have a new PC (Windows 7 64 bit), with the trial download of PE9 (and Premiere Elements 9) installed.  My old PC is Windows XP 32 bit with PSE3 (and Premiere Elements 1) installed.  The images are in "My Pictures" in the old XP PC, generally in date folders but with some folders with names not in the date sequence.   I have a full backup of my photo images made using Photoshop PSE3 backup onto an external hard drive.
To check that my camera is recognised by the new PC I first downloaded images from my camera onto the new PC, and these have automatically been fetched into the Organizer catalog.  I have not yet formed any albums, or done anything else in Organiser or Editor.
Now, how do I import the catalog (and images) created with PSE3 from the external hard drive into the new PC, so that the folders are in My Pictures in the same format?  I have looked in Help and in Forums and seen comments about importing and converting from earlier versions of PSE to PSE 9, but it's not clear to me how to do this - can you please advise?
I have also downloaded some short video clips from my camcorder using Premiers Elements 9 trial.  These clips appear in Organiser in the Albums pane under a heading of Video Projects.  Does Organiser automatically put all video clips (or video projects) into Organiser in "Video Projects", and can this be disabled or  customised at all?  It seems at first a bit odd to me that Video clips and Still images are all in the same pane.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

On the new computer, in PSE9, select File->Restore Catalog, and point it to the backup you made from PSE3. You will be given several options about restoring the photos, including one that is to original directory location.
More details are here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402894.html (which was written for PSE6, but applies to later versions of PSE as well)

  • PSE 10 Catalog Conversion (from PSE 6) fails

Installed 10, prompted to convert catalog from previous version.  All is well so far.  Process starts, gets to 34% and hangs.  Eventually times out and says conversion failed, that the catalog should be repaired in original app.  I repaired in PSE 6 (though it did not say it needed to, did anyway).  Then went back to PSE 10.  Selected PSE 6 catalog and it completed conversion in 2 seconds 16, 227 photos, I don't think so!)  Sure enough no photos came over to PSE 10.
I am now in a state where I can only get to my photos from PSE 10 and can not get the catalog to PSE 10.  Please help??

There may be several reasons for this conversion failure, especially from version 6. I had two main catalogs and several smaller ones for projects for friends. Before trying the conversions, I did just like you, a repair and optimize before converting. In most cases, no problems. However I met two different failures.
One was due to the fact I had a couple of pictures in jpeg2000 format. The jpeg2000 format plugin was present in PSE6, not in PSE10.
In that case, instead of asking PSE10 to convert, I did a backup in PSE6 and a restore from PSE10 : bingo, I got a message showing the offending files. So my advice is to use the backup/restore way which does an automatic conversion with less problems.
The second case was on one of my main catalogs, which showed its age, with a lot of transfers between computers via backups on various external disks. I simply used psedbtools to check if something was wrong with my PSE6 catalog. (http://johnrellis.best.vwh.net/psedbtool/).
The result was 4 types of drives errors in the catalog from the 7 shown by John R Ellis... The organizer did handle that perfectly withi PSE6 : I never noticed errors in backup/restore. But as stated in the help documentation, those errors can be very problematic when upgrading to versions above 6.
So my advice now : first try the backup/restore way, then if not successful, install and run psedbtool and report back for more help.

Hello alltogether! I use PSE 7 on my PC with windows XP and now want to change to a new Mac with the newest version PSE . Is it possible to move all my albums and tags to that new version? Thank you very much for your kind answers! Candyapple111

    1. Install PSE 11 in windows, upgrade your catalog, then make a full backup  to a removable drive, like a usb drive, using the organizer's back up command. If you buy the boxed version you get discs for both platforms.
    2. Install PSE on the mac.
    3. Restore the backup to the mac. Point the restore to the .tly file in the folder, not the enclosing folder.

  • Installed PSE 13 on new computer with PSE 11

I used Laplink PC Mover to move contents of my old computer to a new computer. That included PSE 11. When I tried to open PSE 11, it didn't open. Decided to "upgrade" to PSE 13. I bought and downloaded and installed PSE 13. Organizer in PSE 13 opens, but shows no photos, albums, people, tags, etc. All the pictures transferred. I can find them using explorer. They don't show up in Organizer, and I don't want to lose the tags, captions, etc.
    It ought to be easier.
    Thanks for your help.
After getting PSE 13 to work, should I or can I remove PSE 11?
Tried chatting with Adobe, but was receiving "we are still assisting other customers, thank you for your patience" for over an hour. Gave up.

Neither Laplink nor Adobe make this clear when moving to a new computer. It should be easier.
There is practically one post every day about the migration process of the catalogs in this forum.
On the other hand, there is a link on the welcome page of the present Elements forum.
    But...
It is not mentionned in the faq page. (If Adobe employees browse this discussion...)
The real problem is that it's not a question people ask when learning the program and reading help files and tutorials. Only when they need to migrate.
So what happens when it's time to migrate?
    - those with scarce knowledge about computers will ask in this forum or search for solutions on the Web.
    - those who are at ease with computers will think they know... and fall into the trap that restoring on a different drive will not work and create disconnected files.
    What do you think?

  • PSE 12 is freezing up with OSX Yosemite

Upgraded to Yosemite OS and found that PSE 12 now freezes up when using the clone or heal tools and requires to force quit the program.  Trying to get an answer from Adobe is just about impossible.  Any suggestions.

    Hi,
We sincerely apologize for the problem customers are facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
    1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
    2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
    Plug-in installation instructions:
    1. Close Photoshop Elements
    2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
    3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
    • For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    • For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.
    Hope this helps!
