Convert DNG twice in lossy format, additional loss of quality?

I've got some DNG that by mistake I converted with embedded raw all spread in my Lightroom catalog.
I want to discharge raw, so as Lightroom doesn't allow to sort files by size (whyyy?), the easier solution is to choose all DNGs and convert them again to DNG unchecking "embed raw".
My question is: will this procedure convert twice my image in lossy format resulting in a additional loss of quality or the already compressed image will be untouched?

  • ALAC on iTunes and a lossy format on the iPod

    I have all my itunes tracks stored in ALAC, but this size is far too big to sync a reasonable number of songs to the iPod.
    I know there is a create AAC version in iTunes, but this then seems to create a duplicate item in the iTunes library....and makes the library even bigger if I choose all the tracks.
    Is there a way to convert to AAC/MP3 or whatever on the fly as the sync is in progress.
    The only other way that I can see is to create a second iTunes library, with all files converted to a small lossy format. Sync the iPod with one and keep the other for home playback

    *Is there a way to convert to AAC/MP3 or whatever on the fly as the sync is in progress.*
    On-the-fly conversion is only available on the iPod shuffle. The iPod shuffle (probably because of it's limited capacity) has the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". This option is not available for any other model iPod. For the larger iPods the files have to be converted in iTunes first or indeed have to have been imported in a compressed format prior to transfer. An alternative to creating a different library is to sync the iPod from a smart playlist (Using the option Sync Music - Selected playlists) that picks up only the compressed files. You could create a similar smart playlist to pick up only the lossless files which you can use when you want to listen to your songs in iTunes.
    Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". This is particularly useful when your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod. When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
    *I know there is a create AAC version in iTunes, but this then seems to create a duplicate item in the iTunes library....and makes the library even bigger if I choose all the tracks.*
    Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. This is allow you to keep different formats in your library for just such as use as described above.

  • Can I re-convert dng files to psd files (or another format that can be used in Adobe Touch)?

    I am using LR 4.1, CS6, on a PC running Windows 7.  Creative Cloud will accept dng's, but Adobe Touch will not.  I'd hate to have to re-save lots of photos one at a time.  (I'm not generally all that happy with dng format--it makes some files unreadable elsewhere, and any work done on a dng results in its being saved as a psd anyway.)
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Gail

    1. Proprietary formats such as NEF and CR2 are secret.
    2. The universal DNG is an open format.
    By all means stick to the raw files produced by your camera if you intend to do your editing in the software provided by your camera manufacturer. If you do all your editing in Adobe software DNG, imho is a better workflow choice.
    For archiving purposes I would sooner trust Adobe for future support on DNG than individual camera makers who are known to change their raw formats. Also the benefit of embedded data and no sidecar files, plus fast load data (introduced for DNG’s in Lightroom 4) are clear advantages
    If you want to use a tablet with Photoshop Touch tools such as layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters then a PSD exported from DNG in light room will almost certainly produce an optimum sized file. Tiff will also support layers but the file size will usually be much bigger.

  • DNG 1.4 Lossy Compression Bit Depth

    Hi,
    The SDK have not been yet released but I'm wondering is the DNG lossy compression bitdepth converted to 8bit, converted to something else, or is it keeping the original bitdepth ?
    I'm wondering cause I'm mainly using DNG as the format for my 35mm scanned pictures. I did a short test using the lossy compression and it seems impressive, my 185Mb file is reduced to 10.8Mb, and there is only a slight loss. However, as I often to radical color correction in lightroom, alot of tweak in the shadows, I just want to make sure I'm not that suddendly, my corrections will not be apply to a 8bit depth and that I will get a posterized result.
    Thanks.

    The spec and SDK are available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/dng
    Yes, the lossy compressed images are in 8 bit. Whether or not you'll get posterization will depend on the circumstances of the original capture, as well as how strong of a correction you apply.  As you say in your case, you tend to make strong color corrections, so you'll simply need to do some more testing to determine whether or not there will be any problems.  Unfortunately I can't think of any other rules of thumb or shortcuts other than direct evaluation with your own eyes.

    YOGenereally, you shouldn't convert from a lossy format AAC or MP3) to another lossy fomrat.
    It's called loss because you lose information when you convert it.
    If you only use these files on the computer and the iPod, I'd recommend AAC. Better quality at same bit rate as MP3.

  • Can't we convert itunes downloads to MP3 format anymore?

    If so how do I do it it doesn't come down in the drop down menu anymore!!

    Yes, you can. Although be aware that cross converting one lossy format to another lossy format may result in a loss of audio quality.
    In iTunes open the Prefs > General and click "import settings." Change the options to your desire MP3 settings and click the OK buttons. In the iTunes browser highlight the track or tracks right-click (or control-+click) and choose "create XXX version."
    Also be aware this will create a new track in the iTunes library.

  • Different Colors and Lights during import of a converted DNG

    Hi all,
    i've recognized a problem if i want to import a DNG file whis was previously converted by the Adobe DNG converter.
    I'm using a Pentax Camera which generates PEF-Files of about 10 MB each. I'm using the DNG converter to reduce disk space (the converted ones are only 5 MB included the JPEG preview).
    Now i've seen that the pictures doesn't look like the original picture if i import them into lightroom. They are less colorful and 'colder' than the originals. This could be seen directly if i import one file in two formats (PEF, DNG) side by side.
    It looks like Lightroom/ACR doesn't recognize the embedded camera profile correctly. After opening the file with the DNG profile editor (from Adobe Labs) it looks correctly and i can see, that the Pentax-Profile is used. But this doesn't do either Lightroom or Photoshop CS 4 with installed ACR.
    In a different tool (Capture One), i can see also the differencies and the profile 'DNG default' is unsed. In this tool i'm able to select the camera which is used for taking the picture. If i do this, the colors look correctly as soon as i change it.
    Any ideas for this? I bought Lightroom for a lot of money and i don't want to change my tool again.
    Thanks

    Hi Dave,
    yes, thats generally what i want to do.
    I have the PEF-Files out of my camera and i convert them with the Adobe DNG converter to the DNG format. The old Pentax K100D is using uncompressed PEF, thats why the pictures are twice the size than the converted DNG
    If i import these files for further processing into Lightroom, they are looking similar to the originals viewed with another application (e.g. the pentax development tool) for a second, after that Lightroom is changing the preview to the settings of the Adobe Profile. Colors are much more colder and less colorful. If i try to change the profile in the developement tab, there are no visible changes to the picture.
    I've downloaded the DNG Converter and Camera RAW. There are several profiles included, but i don't know how to use them with Lightroom or Photoshop CS4 (with installed ACR).
    I've created a screenshot of the differencies so you know what i mean.
    Screenshot
    On the left side you can see the developed JPEG via PEF out of the Pentax-Software (Silkypix), on the right is the developed JPEG out of the DNG via Lightroom. Both files are without any further changes to the development process.
    The left picture corresponds to the original conditions.

  • Convert DNG back to RAW?

    I'm trying to re-master some photos at work.  They're from an architectural photographer who uses a Canon 5D Mk.II, but when he shot the photos, I was using Photoshop CS3 (which was incompatible with the 5D Mk.II's CR2 RAW files)...so I had to convert them to DNG.  Now that I have CS5, I'd like to be able to convert them back to the original CR2 format.  Additionally, I would like this because Bridge and Photoshop/Camera Raw are having difficulty reading and processing a handful of the DNG files, and some of them have photos I need.  Is it even possible to convert back to the original format?  Thanks for your help!

    rmintzes wrote:

    Only if the original raw file was embedded into the DNG file as an option. Otherwise, no..

  • Is DNG a universal raw format?

    I have DNG files converted from both a Nikon D70 and a D80. Now, ACDSee Pro 2.0 reads the former, but not the later (original Nikon NEFs, as well as the DNGs). Also, for example, Aperture's specs state that it only reads DNGs from cameras it already supports.
    I thought that DNG is a universal format, in that that it doesn't matter from which format it was converted. Otherwise, what's the point of it?
    So where is the problem in this case / in the DNG format or the poor implementation of software packages?

    Adobe developed the DNG format with the intention of it being somewhat of a "universal" format. Something that could be used to "standardize" images from different cameras. Adobe has published the DNG specifications in an attempt to promote the format as such. But different companies have the option of implementing DNG support differently. I am not enough of a programmer to discuss all that is involved. I do know that other companies support DNG only for the cameras that they already support.
    When RawShooter was still in existence they proudly announced that they were supporting DNG, but only for the cameras they already supported. I argued with them, stating that it was supposed to be a universal format. Their reply was (essentially) that Adobe didn't understand all the ramifications.
    As far as Photoshop and ACR are concerned, the DNG format is pretty much universal. How other companies choose to implement the support is left entirely to that company's discretion.

    millons of thanks in advance.

    You'll have to use the destype DELIMITEDDATA to render your Report in CSV format. Then set the mime type to Excel. I don't know the exact syntax, so please do a search in metalink for "reports excel" for examples and more info.

  • Converting an MP3 to WAV -- How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit

    How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit, 44,1 khz? I like the program Switch which I know can convert MP3s, but how to I set it up for the specific settings that I need?

    Just import into a logic session. Then bounce at the specs you require. Logic or Waveburner, iTunes and even Quicktime I think can each do this easily.
    A question though. I am assuming you are converting an MP3 to 44.1/16 bit just so you can play the file in a consumer quality CD player?? IF so - that makes sense.
    But if you are doing this because you think it will improve the sound quality of your MP3, I will save you some time here. It won't improve the sound quality at all. It will just turn the MP3 into a larger audio file.
    44.1/16 bit resolution enables you to have a much better sounding file than MP3 formats, but not by going at it this way.
    No offense to you if you know all of this already. I am assuming that you may not know this - because if you did you would also likely know how to convert an audio file.
    Cheers

  • Convert a String to Decimal Format in European format

    Hi Experts,
    I am having a string as a context type for a input field, where the user can enter the Price, I need to convert the same into European format "###.###,00", I am using this below code to convert the string to decimal format
    User will enter the input as 10 as it needs to be converted into 10,00. Also, 1000 which has to be converted as 1.000,00
    String Str1 = wdContext.currentvn_temptable.getVa_TempUnitPrice();
    Locale mylocale  = Locale.GERMAN;
    String pattern="###.###,00";
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getNumberInstance(mylocale);
    DecimalFormat df = (DecimalFormat)nf;
    df.applyPattern(pattern);
    String output = df.format(Str1);
    wdComponentAPI.getMessageManager().reportSuccess("Unit Price" + " " + pattern + " " + output);
    When I execute the above code, i am getting an error called "Malformed Pattern ###.###,00"
    Please let me know, how to convert a String to Quantity in European format
    Thanks & Regards,
    Palani

    Hello!
    Try to change your pattern to this one
    Locale mylocale  = Locale.GERMAN;
    String pattern = "#,#00.00";
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getNumberInstance(mylocale);
    DecimalFormat df = (DecimalFormat)nf;
    df.applyPattern(pattern);
    String output = df.format(1111111.222);
    Pattern has an influence on number of digits between separators, but you have to use ',' for grouping and '.' for decimal. Character values for separators correspond to your Locale object.
    Thanks, Mikhail

  • Convert a date in String format to a Date

    Hi,

    s.close();
    } catch (SQLException e) {}

    I'm getting the following errors:
    COM.ibm.db2.jdbc.DB2Exception: [IBM][CLI Driver][DB2/NT] SQL0180N
    The syntax of the representation of a date/time of day value as character sequence is false. .SQLSTATE=22007

    I'm pretty sure it won't understand what date.toString() returns. If you know what format the database understands, you do it like this:
    SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MMM-yy"); // e.g. 18-Apr-02
    String datestring = sdf.parse(date);
    and use that instead of date in your sql string. Some databases understands it if you do
    "to_date('18-Apr-02')"
    so you could include that in your sql string as well..
    You could also try to make it a java.sql.Date and hope your jdbc driver knows how to convert it to a string that the database understands if you don't know the format:
    con = getConnection();
    PreparedStatement ps = con.prepareStatement("select date1 from table1 where date1 <= ?");
    ps.setDate(new java.sql.Date(date.getTime()));
    ResultSet rs = s.executeQuery(sql);
