Convert Exiting DV to AIC

I'm no technical expert so bear with me ...
I've read a lot of discussion around im08 and the loss of quality with DV files when trying to edit and move / export to DVD (single frame processing).
I was hoping that im09 would help alleviate this as I have quite a few hours of DV footage currently catalogued with im08 (still using im06HD as my main editor) but this unfortunately doesn't appear to be the case.
I've just read recently that converting the DV to AIC before importing can improve quality if your final delivery is to DVD, is that right?
So further questions :-
Can video that's already been imported to im08 as DV be converted in situ, or, do I have to consider wiping it all and doing a fresh import, convert then final import into im09 (if I upgrade)?
How do I import from minDV tape camcorder onto Ext HDD without im, application suggestions?
Can I then batch convert with QT Pro to AIC?
Will I lose the time and date stamps from the footage if I convert with QT Pro?
Thanks
Luke

I've just read recently that converting the DV to AIC before importing can improve quality if your final delivery is to DVD, is that right?
Some people indicate that converting 480i DV to 480p AIC improved processing but I have not personally made any tests in this area. Since "better" is often very subjective to a particular system/configuration, my recommendation is to make you own test. If you can see a difference and it makes a difference to you, then by all means go with that work flow.
Can video that's already been imported to im08 as DV be converted in situ, or, do I have to consider wiping it all and doing a fresh import, convert then final import into im09 (if I upgrade)?
Yes, but only if none of the original DV material is currently in use. Simply close iMovie '09, convert the files in the the named_Event folder to desired compression format, save the newly converted files back to the same folder, remove or delete the original DV files, delete the "Cache" and "Thumbnail" folders, and open iMovie '09 to allow it to re-thumbnail the converted files.
How do I import from minDV tape camcorder onto Ext HDD without im, application suggestions?
Vidi (free) is an older, dedicated DV capture application that may suit your needs. I prefer it over QT Pro captures whose frame rate capture tends to be dependent on the CPU of the system involved.
Can I then batch convert with QT Pro to AIC?
No. QT Pro does not do "batch" processing but can simultaneously convert multiple files in parallel. How many and how fast depends on your CPU power. MPEG Streamclip (free), on the other hand, can perform true "batch" processing if you open the "Batch List" window and add/drop your files to it instead of the main window.
Will I lose the time and date stamps from the footage if I convert with QT Pro?
Yes, files will be keyed to their "Creation" data (date/time the conversion files is written).

  • Converting MPEG 4 TO AIC

    Hi All,
I have just used compressor to convert an MPEG 4 movie to AIC, all worked well but the file size has increased from 3mb to 28 mb, any ideas why this would be.
    Many Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Nick,
Thanks for your reply, I am a bit of a newbie to FCP etc etc, the file size is not a problem for the application I am using the converted file for I just wondered why.
    Thanks again,

  • How to convert Sony camcorder 1080i AIC .mov files to work with Photos app?

I have a Sony SDR-HD10 camcorder from 2008. It records in 1080i format, and I exported to .mov using the Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode format, 1920x1080; Color Profile HD (1-1-1); 2 channel audio.
I have 121 files totaling 105GB. These files all play fine in iMovie. BUT - when I open them in Quicktime X for Yosemite, it converts them into a file that is about twice the space on the drive. The resulting file is Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode, 1888x1062. It also resets the created and edited date/time.
I looked at each video and the resulting quality is about the same.
How can I convert these files into something that Photos will like, but not double in size?
Also, I should point out that I'm not certain I should be using Photos for movies. I used to use iPhoto for pictures, and iMovie for movies, but hardly ever cared to edit videos and thought iMovie was too bulky and confusing for general playback. With Photos, it will upload everything to the cloud (and I'm paying for it), so i can use Photos as my canonical source for all movies and pictures. I have iTunes Match, and my email is hosted by Google, so I'm getting closer to having everything in the cloud. so far, i haven't gone all in with Dropbox for documents, probably because I'm too paranoid about corruption on a remote device like that if there is any concurrent access.

Check out the export settings from iMovie. Your exporting in a very high grade format used for editing, you want a delivery format. Ask on the iMovie forum for more.

  • Canon HF20: backup the MTS files (and later convert), or import in AIC?

    Camcorder: Canon HF20. FCE 4.01.
I have filmed some clips with the 7 mbps setting. The file size of the mts files is fairly small, but when importing it to FCE (or iMovie) the filesize is increased 10 times (to about 60 mbps) I found the answer in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10900327&#10900327 ,
I want to save all my video clips to my external drive, and I am tempted to just copy the mts files to a folder, and then later convert them when I want to edit the footage. Would this be possible, or do I have to import them in FCE now?
Is it possible to copy the mts files back to the camcorder at a later time (the entire file structure - the folder is called BDMV) and then import it in FCE?

Yeah, make sure you copy the entire folder structure from the highest level and DONT delete ANY files (like I did!)
I spent the entire night last night and the last week trying to get compatibility of .MTS files shot on a Canon HFS11 into FCE 4 (FCE 4.0.1 to be exact).
I shot 3 months worth of footage on the HFS11 and would daily dump the AVCHD folders into date folders (ie 060110, 070110, etc etc) on an external HDD.
Since I had all the .MTS files off the camera I didnt know if I could use Log and Transfer to bring them into FCE but it is possible. Like other forums many people suggested you had to have the folders exactly like they were on the camera. This is true, unless of course you have deleted some files or if any become corrupt then the structure isnt exactly the same. For me I had deleted any junk files using a fast .MTS viewer (called a windows 7 machine!) without realising it was going to affect the 'import' process in FCE.
    SOLUTION
I found that the files in the CLIPINF folder (.CLI files) were matched to the .MTS files in the STREAM folder. So if you delete any .MTS files I guess Log and Transfer reads the INDEX.BDM file or the .CLI files and says hang on, something is different. So I went through my .CLI files and found the names missing from the .MTS files and duplicated a colour bar clip I made and renamed it to the missing files. Viola, and FCE 4 could 'import' them.

  • Converting AVCHD to AIC or MOV on a PowerPC G5 - workflow issues

I have a PowerPC G5 with FCE 4.0 and running OS 10.5.8. I've read some of the related posts and I wanted to make sure I had the right info. My options to be able to edit footage recorded in AVCHD are:
1- Get a new Mac so I can have FCE convert the MTS file to an FCE-friendly format.
2- Use Imovie to do the import/conversion and then re-export it to FCE
3- Or buy (I have not seen any free version and MPEG Streamclip does not work) an MTS converter to convert the files to MOV or AIC.
Short of buying a new Mac, what's my best option? Any recommendation for a converter? Is one method better in terms of minimizing loss of quality? And finally, is there any quality loss converting from AVCHD to AIC or MOV.
    Thanks.

"QuickTime file format - Wikipedia excerpt:
The QuickTime (.mov) file format functions as a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles). Each track either contains a digitally-encoded media stream (using a specific codec) or a data reference to the media stream located in another file. Tracks are maintained in a hierarchal data structure consisting of objects called atoms. An atom can be a parent to other atoms or it can contain media or edit data, but it cannot do both."
The codecs can be AIC, h.264...
Another words, .mov is a container, the codecs are a payload, so that different streams can be still inside .mov file.

  • Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st?

    Couple of questions...
Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st? Is it because the hardware isn't up to AVCHD or something? I only have a Core 2 Duo 2GHz 4Gb RAM so is this enough?
Won't converting from AVCHD to AIC and then to an output format (which would be best for quality once editing is complete?) decrease overall quality?
On a side note, currently my Panasonic TZ7 does AVCHD lite 720P. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Panasonic TZ20 with AVCHD full HD 1080i. However I've heard that although 1080i is full HD its not as good as 1080p progressive. Now I'm wondering if I should buy the Sony Hx9v which has 1080p or wait till next year for a newer TZ camera which has 1080p. Is there a massive difference between 1080i and 1080p, and for that matter over my current 720p?
Reason I'm thinking of upgrading is I'm off to Disney Florida this year for 1st time and want best I can, so was wondering if my current TZ7 would be enough or to upgrade to a TZ20 for the video
    Cheers

Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st?
Basically AVCHD doesn't record all the frames of a video as full frames (i-frames), it records a full frame every so often and the frames in between are made of information about the areas of the frame that have changed and a calculation so that a full frame can be recreated by comparing it with the previous frame (p-frames), this gets a little more complicated as they can also be compared with next frame too (b-frames).
Since the in between frames aren't full frames they can't be edited, which is where AIC comes in. When the file is converted to AIC all the frames are recreated (as full frames) from the various types of frames in the AVCHD file, they can then be edited.
Won't converting from AVCHD to AIC and then to an output format (which would be best for quality once editing is complete?) decrease overall quality?
Yes and no, think of the conversion more of an expansion whereby all of the quality of the original file is maintained, hence no loss of quality. This isn't entirely true since AIC does contain compression, but the files are already large enough as AIC files to expand them to an uncompressed format would be rather ridiculous for amateur video, and the loss of quality is probably immeasurable in most cases.
Is there a massive difference between 1080i and 1080p, and for that matter over my current 720p?
That very much depends on what you are going to do with it, the difference between these resolutions can be noticeable if the videos are encoded at appropriate data rates, but if you are going to use a similar data rate to compress a 1080p file that you use for a 720p file then you won't achieve any additional quality, indeed you may actually lose some.

  • Why poor quality AIC & Apple ProRes HQ video when compared to original video files!

First, I'm a long time PC user who has recently switched to Mac's and I'm rather picky about the quality of my videos.
Problem: I have HD video from a Canon HF S10 camcorder and Canon EOS 7D that looks fantastic on a PC... but looks very so-so once imported into a iMovie or FCE or FCP. I've tried all three programs using AIC and yes I've even tried Apple Pro Res HQ (FCP 7.0 log & transfer) and still end up with very poor quality mov files when compared to the originals. Part of the problem (or benefit of a PC) is that the PC actually plays the original RAW MTS/M2TS/MOV files without any trouble and and they look unbelievable. Where as my Mac has to import/convert the file to AIC or Apple Pro Res HQ... so no matter what codec I use, my Mac produces video that is not even close to what I get out of my PC.
My original RAW files are all 1920x1080 60i and are MTS files from the HF S10 and Mov files from the 7D. Even the original RAW Mov files produced from the 7D don't look as good on my Mac as they do on my PC. I even took a SD card with the original files down to the local Apple store to see how they look on a Macbook Pro and they still don't look like the originals on my PC. Also, all my comparisons are being done side by side on two 24" Apple cinema displays at full size (1920x1080) that are calibrated. What am I doing wrong and why the loss in quality? Any ideas as to why the quality is just so-so when compared to the originals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The thing that is wrong is that you are judging the quality of VIDEO on COMPUTER monitors. Properly calibrated or no...this is not how you do it. Calibration for computer monitors sets them right for PHOTOSHOP and color, not VIDEO and proper monitoring. Only getting a signal to a broadcast VIDEO monitor, or HDTV, will show you what you really have. And for that you need an HD input/output device or capture card...and the HDTV or HD monitor.
Computer monitors are never the place to judge video quality. Resolution is typically lowered to allow for full frame playback. Even if paused.

  • How to find conversion exit MATN1 for the field MATNR

    Hi Friends !
I want to run the infopackage with selection on material. But when put some value in the infopackage selection screen, it says "cannot find conversion exit MATN1 for the field MATNR".
Ques is how to find where this conversion exit is written? Will it be written in ECC side or BI side?
    Source System Datasource : 0MAT_SALES_ATTR
    InfoObject in BI : 0MAT_SALES

    Rekha

    HI ,
It will be available in the BI system itself as FM , you can find them in TCODE : SE37 --> provide the converstion exit name
with star on both sides like MATN1 and press F4 key , every convertion exit will have two FM s , one for INPUT and
one for OUT put , you can try the Test Run ofFM to check how it works
    For MATN1
    CONVERSION_EXIT_MATN1_INPUT
    CONVERSION_EXIT_MATN1_OUTPUT

  • MTS to AIC conversion... best software/practice...?

    Hi,
I'd like any advice available for converting MTS files taken on a Sony HD cam corder to .Mov so that they can be imported into FCE... I've been using a video converter called iskysoft that does the job, but i've noticed that they video quality has somewhat suffered... does anyone know of a great way to convert mts to .mov without compromising the video quality?
    Any advice welcome.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Final Cut will only handle AVCHD files when it finds them in their original file structure (either by connecting the camcorder or using a memory card reader), not isolated .mts files. It is suggested you had to have the folders exactly like they were on the camera. This is true, unless of course you have deleted some files or if any become corrupt then the structure isnt exactly the same.It is possible you had deleted some junk files using a fast .MTS viewer without realising it was going to affect the 'import' process in FCE.
The simple advice is use the simple yet powerful program called Mts to FCE converter or the mts to Final Cut Express Converter for Mac convert AVCHD MTS to AIC MOV that compatible with Final Cut Express and keep the best video and audio quality.
    There is a solution: http://mts-to-aic-converter.com/edit-sony-cx730ecx760gw77v-1080p-mts-in-final-cu t-express-4-with-5-1-channels/
Hope it can help you, good luck!

If you're working in Final Cut Pro you should try that forum. What version of the software are you using? The AVCHD media should be ingested using log and transfer. The 7D media should be converted using Compressor. You don' need HQ, ProRes is sufficient. How are you monitoring the video? Are full size on a video monitor? All this should be explained on the FCP forum. FCE does not work with ProRes in any form.

  • JVC HD7 - TOD convert - quality - parameters ?

    Hello everybody,
Hopefully I'll help with some data and have some questions at the same time.
After researching several communities I use MPEG SC 1.9 to convert the TOD files. There was a little disturbance, either to convert to HDV or AIC. Hopefully my little test will display the difference:
*TOD file 39.7 MB in 1920x1080*
*DV file 46.3 MB in roughly 1.5 min*
adjustments within MSC...Format: DV Stream(PAL, Interlaced,16:9, Audio rate 48000khz), scale Interlaced, color re-interlace, upper pic first
-> FCP no render for Video necessary
-> hopefully I got all menue options halfway right. Apparently I'm not US and use a german version
*MOV file 143.6 MB with Apple Intermediate Codec in exactly 1 min*
adjustments within MSC...Format: Quicktime Export, Compression AIC, Audio uncompressed, 1920x1080, scale Interlaced, color re-interlace, upper pic first
-> FCP rencer for Video necessary
-> hopefully that's the codec everybody means, when talking AIC !?
    General FCP question here:
I've set it to HDV 1080i 50 and then imported the files to the project. Apparently the movie in the canvas (100% size) should be huge, a lot of scrolling bars. But it isn't. It's a little bit bigger than the canvas or viewer window and the picture isn't that clear.
Same thing with the TOD file in Mpeg SC. It's not crystal clear, far away from expectations. Cars in city limits seem to have stripes while in motion. The frame size doesn't fit. It should be bigger than my smaller display can display.
Here's the info out of Mpeg SC:
    Stream: MOV001.TOD
    Pfad: ~/Movies/MOV001.TOD
    Typ: MPEG transport stream
    Dauer: 0:00:13
    Datenmenge: 39.73 MB
    Bit Rate: 24.66 Mbps
    Video Spuren:
    4113 MPEG-2, 1920 × 1080, 16:9, 29.97 fps, 28.00 Mbps, oberes Halbbild zuerst
    Audio Spuren:
    4129 MP2 stereo, 48 kHz, 384 kbps
    Stream Dateien:
    MOV001.TOD (39.73 MB)
Why is the 1920x1080 not the size it should be ? Honestly, if that s the quality from a daylight shot I will sell that camcorder right away and buy a PAL system mini DV for half the price. It's bad !
Another angle: *I've chosen Apple FCP unkompr. 8-Bit 4:2:2 in MSC*.
    At least I got a 1920x1080 picture/movie. But what does 8Bit 4:2:2 mean ?
Is that what all of you do ? Guess not.
22 sec of movie 78.7 MB blows up to 2.55 GB !!!
Still the quality isn't that great. Would someone please help me with the parameters in MSC to convert ? That would be awesome.
Well or any other way around the conversion. I'm a little desparate right now.
Lowlight quality of the camcorder is really bad. One bulp and it's spooky dark. But that's not that bad, if at least perfect lid scenes would be great.
Anyone with experiences when it comes to quality of the HD7 ? The pic isn't clearer as the one of my 5yr old miniDV and I shot at bluesky daylight ???
    Help is highly appreciated.
    thanks.
I still wait for those super color pics

Not help full I know, but I did have the same problem with the HD7, a customer brought it back. He could not get a quality picture. We tested several day's the camera, also another HD7 but we could not get good quality in a Apple setup. (Tested with iMovie (6HD) FCE 3.5 FCP6.02 OS 10.4.10)
He did buy a Sony HDV

  • HDV to AIC to HDV - Does it recompress?

So, let's say I record some HDV on my Canon HV20. Here is my workflow.
HDV -> Apple Intermediary Codec (iMovie) editing -> Export to Camera (HDV)
Does it have to recompress when I send to back to the camera? I'm concerned about losing quality.

Good question. The old DV transfers are non-lossy (if they are kept in the DV domain): even after the Nth generation the quality is the same (well, the occasional dropped frames are the fly in the ointment...).
On the other hand, HDV uses lossy MPEG2 compression (AVCHD uses more advanced but still lossy MPEG4, H.264 compression). Those are converted to AIC while editing in iMovie and re-compressed to MPEG2/MPEG4 when sending back to camcorder. (DV is kept as DV so there is no quality loss although also DV is a lossy 5:1 codec).
So yes, you lose some quality in HDV and AVCHD <-> AIC conversions. I don't have any HD gear to test how much quality loss per generation there is.
    This thread may interest you:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6145417#6145417
BTW, iMovie HD 6 allows one to export as a .m2t file (in the export to a Camcorder options) so that allows to test HDV without a HD camcorder. But I don't have any good original HDV video for testing.
Anyway, I just did a quick test with a high resolution still image input in a HD project but there the 2nd generation was similar to the 1st generation (I used MPEG Streamclip to convert the .m2t to AIC-encoded .mov and then used QT Player to copy a frame from it to the Clipboard and GraphicConverter (Command-J to copy the Clipboard and Command-Option-Tab to cycle the images) to compare the quality.

  • Print Sizing and Quality Issues

When I print PDF documents I have issues with sizing and quality. I only have this issue with my Mac. Windows prints the files as they should be. I've tried two different printers, both over network. It doesn't matter whether I am in Adobe or in a browser. Basically it oversizes the documents and cuts off the edges. The quality on images and logos is severly degraded. This probelm existed in Lion and now in Mountain Lion. Any help?

What we need are the clip properties & sequence settings in Final Cut Express.  Your screenshot is from a Finder window.
It would appear you have a clip with nonstandard frame size (1366x768) in an H.264 file.  FCE cannot edit this material.  FCE is limited to specific codecs and frame sizes.  You need to convert your clip to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec. If it's highdef widescreen then convert it to QT/AIC 1920x1080i.  Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the source clip.
You also need to be using a matching Easy Setup in Final Cut Express.  If your source media file is QT/AIC 1920x1080i then you should select the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 Easy Setup in FCE -AND- then create a new sequence before importing your clip into FCE and placing it in your sequence (timeline)

must be data format issue. when you use Function_module/BAPI from SAP GUI, convertion exit is applied automatically. hence data is converted to proper format & submited.
