I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • I converted a PDF file to Word for editing. Now done, how do I convert it back to PDF?

How do I get a document that I converted from PDF to word back to PDF once edited?

    Hi gcw92591042,
I just checked your subscription details and you are currently subscribed to Adobe Export PDF service that enables you to convert pdf documents into various other formats like .doc, .rtf etc.
However in order to convert such files back into pdf format, you need to subscribe to Adobe PDF Pack(Reliably Create PDFs, Convert PDFs, & Merge PDFs Online | Adobe PDF Pack ).
Alternatively you can use Acrobat software to edit your pdf files without getting into the hassle of converting them into doc format and vice-verse. You can download a free 30 day trial from this Link - Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X
Hope that helps with your query. Please revert back if you have any other questions or need any further assistance.

  • How to convert website files to domain file for edit in iWeb

I have three sites up that I created using iWeb. My hard drive crashed and I hadn't backed up my files. Through ftp, I've downloaded all the files off my websites. Is it possible to create a 'Domain' file using the files I've downloaded? I have every single file I had before, just no way to open it all up in iWeb for editing.
    Thank you for your help.

To add to Ethmoid's reminder to backup I've created an Automator workflow application, *iWeb Domain File Backup*, that will copy the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that contains your domain file to the Desktop. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. The workflow can be edited with Automator to change the destination of the backup copy to the location of your choice.

  • Exporting Newsletter (PDF) and viewing for Mac and PC Users?

    Hi,
I am trying to create a monthly newsletter for my business that can be sent on mass to various clients. Using pages, I save it as a PDF and when sent to MAC mail users, it appears in their inbox as a full 'page newsletter'.
PC users just get a pdf attatchment and no full page/email newsletter.
Being new to this and guessing its a cross platform issue, is there a way to make the newsletter appear in full in either 'inbox' or do I hav to go down the htm route?
    Thanks:)
    Mike

    I second Sagesse.
As far as I know, there is no problem with the PDF you are creating. Rather, the email client that a person uses to view your email.
Mail.app on the Mac, for instance, shows images, PDFs, and other media inline with the rest of the message. Other clients, particularly web-based ones, often show media separate from the message as an attachment.
Most companies and groups that send out newsletters via email do so with HTML and CSS, the same language as a normal web page. Pages no longer has the capability to export to HTML, but even if it did, the resulting files/code would likely look *a lot* different than you intended, due to the nature of a print document versus that of a web page.

  • How do I export a PDF to CS4 for editing.

Someone sent me a PDF that was orignally created as a CS4 document.  I want to export back into CS4 for additionally editing.  How can I accomplish this?

Not using standard InDesign-- it's like a vector illustration saved as JPEG, a one-way street.
There is a commercial program, PDF2ID, that can read the PDF and re-creates it as an ID document from scratch -- so it's not a faithful conversion either. But its results have been reported as "workable" ;-) (http://www.recosoft.com/products/pdf2id/)

  • Convert/Export PAL to 16:9 for DVDSP?

I created a Bar Mitzvah montage for a friend using Final Cut Pro -- the project is 1280x720.  Now she would like some PAL copies for relatives overseas.
I've exported using compressor with the DV PAL Anamorphic setting.  It looks fine when I play using Quicktime but when imported into DVDSP or iDVD there are issues.
DVDSP seems to cut off both sides to make it a 4:3 DVD.  iDVD "squishes" the footage to a 4:3 aspect ratio.  I've also gone into Quicktime and adjusted the visual settings to remove the preserve aspect ratio checkbox and manually size to 1024x576 and this didn't help either.
Can anyone help me here?  Her relatives are flying back tomorrow and I'm running out of time.
    Thanks in advance.

    RatVega™ wrote:
Thing Three: I'm sure it's a typo, but 1024x576? ...that can't be right...
A common mistake. 1024x576 is the displayed square pixel dimensions of a PAL 16:9 image on a computer monitor or other device which does not correctly reproduce PAL's non square pixel 720x576 dimensions.
Fine if you are only playing back on a computer monitor, a disaster if your intended viewing method is a TV.
In that case, don't change the pixel dimensions in QuickTime Player. Do change the aperture correction to Clean. This will then display correctly in QT for computer playback and not mess up the DVD assets for TV viewing.
Note that both 16:9 and 4:3 PAL have the same 720x576 pixel count.
    What to do:
You capture with a suitable Easy Setup and edit in an Anamorphic Sequence.
You Export to Compressor Self Contained with Current Settings.
You compress using a 16:9 preset that the running time of your movie fits into.
You tell the DVD authoring application that the footage is Anamorphic. In DVDSP, you set the asset's properties to Letterbox.

  • Show the last published documents in a view for a document library.

    Hello!
At our company we have a document library with many documents. These documents are evolving and are therefore going from major versions to minor versions to major versions again. To be able to get a good overview of the last "official" versions
we would need to have a view that shows the last "Approved" versions of each document (if any approved versions exist). This is basically the same as watching the document library from a user that only own reading access and therefore only sees the
    "published" versions.
In our case this view should be used by people that own editing rights as well to the documents.
Is it possible to accomplish this?
I tried to use the tip from the following site: link
    The "?IncludeVersions=TRUE"
    did not work though.

    Hi AndersObserve,
I understand that you have a document library that you have enabled content approval(if not, enable it) and versioning, then
you want to create a view to filter major(approved) documents, then you can filter on the ApprovalStatus field. Try to create a new standard view, filter the view when the ApprovalStatus is equal to Approved, then the view will display the published version
    document.
    Best Regards.

  • Converting uncompressed footage to DV pal for editing then reconnect media

    Hi all
many thanks for replys as this forum is my salvation at times
i have a clients project and they have started editing but used uncompressed footage, which makes editing impossible on my machine as playback stops as audio continues.
so my thought is to to a batch import into compressor, export out as dv-pal and i hope that i will be able to do a simple reconnect?
i tried this once with mpeg streamclip but due to the timecode 01:00:00:00(rushes) and mpegstreamclip(00:00:00:00) they would not reink.
can anyone shed some light or a good workflow on this

  • Using IMac descktop intel duo processor, can I convert jpg document images to word for language translation

I have scanned documents in jpg format that need to be translated from french to english. How do I begin the process?

Unfortunately, documents in JPG format are pretty useless - these are fixed raster images and you can't copy and paste the text into any useful format.
When you scan documents, you should use PDF, which at least will give you the option to do character recognition.
The only option you have is to either send the JPG files directly to the translator, or if you MUST use Word files, drag and drop the image into the Word file (this doesn't gain you much other than you get a Word file, you still can't get the text out).

  • Export SD from iMovie for editing in CS3

I'm surprised I haven't found more about this here, on videohelp, and on the apple forums.
SD DV captured in iMovie and edited. The person finishing the DVD is on PC. (I'm neither of the two people.)
My advice to the client is to finish the project on the system it is started on. But I would like to have a better idea of the options.
What is the recommendation as to format from iMovie? If quicktime what settings?
I don't know yet, but let's assume iMovie 06. (iMovie 08 apparently kills SD.)

    Stanley,
Just a guess, but unless the Mac is also running Windows, I would suspect that they will not have any .AVI output options - only flavors of .MOV.
I've had pretty good luck Importing .MOV files into PP. Do not know all of the variations, so some .MOV's might work fine, and others not so well.
If the PC has QT-Pro installed, about any real .MOV (not some tricked up special CODEC version), should be able to be converted (Export) to DV-AVI with MS DV CODEC.
Sorry that I cannot give you hard-fast rules, as I do not have a Mac, and have not directly Imported anything that I know came from iMovie. Maybe I have, but just did not know it.
Still, my advice would be to finish in iMovie on Mac. However, some clients want to do things the hard way. If they are headed in that direction, I'd suggest not doing too much trimming in iMovie and adding no Transitions. This would allow for tighter editing and Handles, when on the PC. Just Exporting the raw Capture footage would probably be best, then use QT-Pro to convert to DV-AVI Type II for editing on the PC.
Let us know how it goes and any pitfalls that occur. I, for one, can always learn about X-platform exchange of Assets and what works best.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
