Convert ext3 root to jfs

Hello all,
I would like to convert my root file system from ext3 to jfs. I made a first unsuccessful attempt. This is what I did:
- Booted my laptop with systemrescue cd and mounted my root partition (/dev/sda3).
- Copied all data from it to another partition using cp -a (except /proc and /sys).
- Unmounted the root partition.
- Created a jfs file system on it using 'mkfs.jfs /dev/sda3'.
- Mounted the root partition.
- Copied back all files to it using cp -a.
- Created empty /proc and /sys directories.
- Edited the /etc/fstab file and changed ext3 to jfs for the root file system.
- Unmounted the root partition again.
- Rebooted.
The laptop boots, but fails to mount the file system. It says the partition is of type jfs, but then I get:
kinit: Cannot open root device sda3(8,3)
kinit: init not found
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Can anyone see what I did do wrong? My boot partition is ext2.
Regards,
Kimmo

Well, proc and sys would have been empty anyways, so it would have been OK to copy them, would have saved some steps, but that is not really relevant.
Did you try the rescue (fallback) ramdisk? JFS is not built into the kernel. As far as that goes, I don't think any FS is is built into the kernel. You may need to rebuild the initrd, if you can boot with the rescue one.
Hmmm... Init not found. That makes me think the directory structure did not get replicated identically.
The procedure should have gone something like this (replace old, spare, new as need be)
# boot rescue CD and get a root prompt
mkdir /mnt/old
mkdir /mnt/new
mkdir /mnt/spare
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/old
mount /dev/spare /mnt/spare
cp -a /mnt/old/* /mnt/spare/
umount /mnt/old
mkfs.jfs /dev/sda3
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/new/
cp -a /mnt/spare/* /mnt/new/
umount /mnt/spare
umount /mnt/new

  • Mounting ext3 root FS as ext4

    Hi,
I'd like to move from ext3 to ext4 on my HD, but I'm not yet completely sure about that , so I'd like first to try out the "no conversion" upgrade by mounting my existing ext3 filesystem as ext4.
So I changed "ext3" in my fstab to "ext4", but the system still mounts my ext3 device as ext3. I think the problem resides in klibc and initramfs .
I tried setting the rootfstype= parameter at boot but I get Kernel Panic.
The system is upgraded to lastest version.
Can you help me in getting my ext3 root be mounted as ext4 at boot time?
    Thanks
    Marcello

    Look at the wiki page:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ext … Converting
You did not convert the fs, so it is still mounted as ext3, but used in a ext4-compatible mode. You'll need to convert the fs as described below on the same wiki page to take advantage of the ext4 features and improvements.
Be aware though that there may be some data loss related to some software bugs (such as KDE): http://www.h-online.com/open/Possible-d … ews/112821

  • Ext3+dir_index vs JFS, XFS, ReiserFS. Choice problem

    I'm a linux noob.
Going to install Archlinux to new laptop Inspiron 1520
Right now playing with Archlinux on vmware.
I want my laptop be fast, and of course choosing right FS is important in this regard.
Let me sum up all i read so far about different FS.
    ext3 vs XFS, JFS, ReiserFS:
    - ext3 is most stable, most supported. But also slowest.
    - XFS, JFS, Reiser are much faster, but have stability and or support problems.
    - ext3 with dir_index is fast, almost as fast as others.
    - noatime, nodiratime considerably improve performance of all these FS
    So here are my questions.
    1. Will ext3 + dir_index + noatime,nodiratime be up to the par with XFS,JFS ?
    2. Does disr_index enabled by default on latest Arch or do I have to enable it manually ?
    3. What other advantages besides speed JFS,XFS have comparing to ext3 ?

lucke wrote:Fragmentation can be an issue. <snip>....<snip>s impact on performance.
Yes indeed fragmentation can cause a significant penalty in performance, especially if you are copying large, very fragmented files. But for a desktop system people usually deal with smaller files than ones downloaded in large torrents; at least that was my impression for my previous post. The thing about XFS being designed as it is, is that it doesn't handle fragmentation of large files well. Basically, the extensive use it makes of B+ trees make it particularly cpu intensive for working with reads that are non-continuous and hence is particularly hurt when copying highly fragmented, large files. This isn't quite as pronounced in JFS (but the performance hit is there) because it's cpu usage isn't as high as XFS; and it's algorithms are more optimized for working with smaller continuous reads than XFS (to my understanding). This is probably the main reason why XFS has a defragmentor and JFS does not.
One thing that fragmentation of a JFS filesystem will have a major effect on is performance of a VMware virtual machine whose image is highly fragmented on JFS. I mentioned this in the wiki article. If you use VMware with a growing image, I recommend somewhat regular defragmenting of the JFS partition, otherwise the VM will be significantly impeded. I imagine this situation is true for other file systems other than JFS. Also, if you torrent frequently with large files, then I would suggest regular JFS defragmenting in this scenario as well.
Gullible Jones wrote:Re JFS data loss: bug reports have been filed. See here and here.
The first report is most likely due to the fact that JFS journals metadata only. This is also the case with XFS, Reiser, and ext3 (with the popular journal=writeback implementation). Caching data losses like the first bug report seems to describe what has been known to happen with other file systems on linux and not JFS. Nonetheless, JFS has never hidden the fact that it journals metadata only as journaling both metadata and actual file data incurs a big performance hit.
The second bug report could easily be a hardware failure. Indeed with both the log and no inodes being dumped to the lost+found directory, I would not jump to judgment that this was necessarily a JFS issue as that would imply JFS failing in SEVERAL different places. It is more likely that the issue was one with hardware.
As I said before, neither one of these show that JFS conclusively looses files in its own right. If you really require journaling of both metadata and file data, then ext3 is the only option for linux (with no journaling /etc/fstab optimizations); JFS and other journaling file systems don't do this as it significantly reduces performance.
Anyway, I am done going on about this; if people are hellbent on believing JFS looses files, so be it. Personally, I have never had a data loss issue with JFS despite years of use and abuse in the spectrum of possible hardware and software configurations.

  • [CLOSED + MOVED]Activate lvm2 on ext3 root partition

    Hello guys,
I want to move to lvm2 on my arch installation, I haven't used any lvm before. So here's what I did so far:
    1. shrink root partition using gparted to 7 gigabytes
    2. created an lvm partition with size 8 gigabytes
    3. migrated all files from the root partition to the lvm partition (in single user mode: # rsync -axSX / /newpartition)
    4. added lvm2 hook before the filesystems hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf according to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Con … #Using_lvm
    5. regenerated the initramfs image using # sudo mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
5a. added a grub entry with root=/dev/vg/root (I have no idea what the difference is between that and /dev/mapper/vg-root)
5b. edited /etc/fstab to use /dev/vg/root (again, no idea if /dev/mapper/vg-root would have been more appropriate) as root mountpoint "/"
    6. Rebooted
    7. Unfortunately, I cannot copy-paste the output, but upon reboot, the initramfs loads fine, it seems to recognize to lvm2 volume, but then says "trying to open console - not found" or something like that and then kernel panics on me.
    Any ideas?
    thanks!

I used reiserfs for many years, many partitions, many distros and had no problems. Every now and then I'd use ext3 but there were a few issues. I got a new laptop in January and decided to take the plunge: shrunk vista, small ext2 /boot and the rest set up as an encrypted partition with LVM2, all logical volumes set up as ext4 (except swap!). I've been very impressed with ext4 stability.
Oh, and step (5) edit fstab to reflect the new file systems, make sure /etc/mtab doesn't exist.

as long as you're using the added_to_stage event, that's not the problem.
do you see any trace output when using:
    package  {

  • Convert ZFS root file system to UFS with data.

Hi, I would need to covert my ZFS root file systems to UFS and boot from the other disk as a slice (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0)
I am ok to split the hard disk from root pool mirror. any ideas on how this can be acheived?
    Please sugget. Thanks,

from the same document that was quoted above in the Limitations section:
    Limitations
Version 2.0 of the Oracle VM Server for SPARC P2V Tool has the following limitations:
Only UFS file systems are supported.
Only plain disks (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0), Solaris Volume Manager metadevices (/dev/md/dsk/dNNN), and VxVM encapsulated boot disks are supported on the source system.
During the P2V process, each guest domain can have only a single virtual switch and virtual disk server. You can add more virtual switches and virtual disk servers to the domain after the P2V conversion.
Support for VxVM volumes is limited to the following volumes on an encapsulated boot disk: rootvol, swapvol, usr, var, opt, and home. The original slices for these volumes must still be present on the boot disk. The P2V tool supports Veritas Volume Manager 5.x on the Solaris 10 OS. However, you can also use the P2V tool to convert Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 operating systems that use VxVM.
You cannot convert Solaris 10 systems that are configured with zones.

    Hi,
OVM 2.2.0 running in a single-server serverpool, that has been running fine for a few months.

    Hi,
same here, it happened to me few weeks ago. My system was working during a couple of months. We have some pools with iSCSI shared partition, and our iSCSI server hanged up, we had to force a brutal shutdown on the server.
On iSCSI server restart, our pools became unstable. Only Server Pool Masters were able to read iSCSI partitions, not Virtual Machine Servers. After restarting them few times and recover the iSCSI partition from scratch, only the production pool woke up.
In our test pool, things got worse, Test Server Pool Master lost his root as well. I had to fix it by using repo.py once again ONLY in the server pool master.
    repo.py -new <device>
    repo.py -root <id_from_repo_new>
After this, you can try a pool restore in the Server Pool tab of the Oracle VM Manager interface.
I would recommend to try a restore first, if it doesn't work the use of repo.py, but not sure if this can corrupt the ocfs2 or not, in my case it worked ok.

  • How to convert Graphic-Converter of AppleWorks in Pages?

    Hi
I d'like to upgrade to OS X Lion. I know, that I can open AppleWorks-Docs with Pages. But I have made many docs with the Graphic-Converter (fractions, roots etc.). These elements cannot be edited by Pages.
    What can I do?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Thanks, Roger
I ment the Equation Editor. I tried to write a fraction in the Equation Editor of AppleWorks and to paste it into a Pages-Doc, but I made it with OS 6. It worked, but  it's not possible to edit the fraction anymore. I don't know, if the Equation Editor will still run in OS 7. I could use the Equation Editor of Word. So I have at least the possibility to create new terms.
Or do you see an other possibility?
    Kind regards

  • TFS 2013 - Convert project to branch

    Hi,
id like to get some expert advise here.
End 2013 we have migrated from TFS 2010 to TFS 2013. All good so far, very happy with TFS 2013.
On "feature" in TFS 2010 was to create a new project as a branch of another team project. This is how have worked for a long time and are still doing.
But in 2013 this option is gone. So what we have done is create a new empty team project and then merge from the other team project (main). This then becomes a baseless merge, with no relationship to the parent folder.
I noticed an option to convert the root of a team project to a branch, but i cannot really find what changes this will make.
Can you please advise what the best way is to create "branched" projects.
We have about 8 team projects under the main project that are not linked. Is it possible to link those ?
What is the best way to create a new team project that is suppose the be a branch of the other team project ? Im guessing it requires the main project to be a branch. Is that safe to change ?
I hope you can advise here. We do have future plans to migrate our branched project to a branch folder in a new team project and create new team branches (foldeR) from there, thus all working on the same team project as recommended.
But untill then we need to stick with this and i like to improve the experience.
    looking forward to your reply.
    Regards,
    Nico

    Hi Nico,
    Thanks for your reply.
I did a mistake, so I deleted the previous reply. Please refer to below information.
The Branch option will try to create a new branch folder first, then create branch relationship between the source branch and new created branch(target branch) automatically.
In your scenario, as you have created the Main.test team project, it means the target branch has already existed, so you cannot use the
Branch option, because Branch operation always try to create a new branch with the name which your provided in
Target Branch Name textbox. So if there’s the target branch existed, you can only merge from your Main team project(needn't convert to folder) to Main.test team project first, then create branch relationship between them(Reparent).

  • [Luks dm-crypt] device mapper cannot find root at boot.

I'm using the current netinstall cd which seems to have support for creating dm-crypt partitions from within the installer.
I used cfdisk to create 3 partitions:
    100mb boot
    4096mb swap
    100000mb for root
Then I manually configured the block devices using the UUID option
    sda1 raw_fs -> Boot with ext2
    sda2 raw_fs -> Swap
    sda3 raw_fs -> dm-crypt named root
    device_mapper/root -> / with JFS
I entered my passwords and it continued through the rest of the installation without issue.
I made sure the my mkinitcpio hooks were present:  udev autodetect pata sata scsi usb usbinput keymap encrypt filesystem
Then once I booted, I waited 10 seconds for "sda3 to settle" then waited another 10 seconds for "device_mapper/root to settle" and then I guess gave up and pushed me to the ramfs shell.
What did I do wrong and how can I not do that again?

I use uuid, too. You just need the correct data. That's why I suggested to run fsarchiver probe simple command, I'm sure it will give you the correct uuid. Unfortunately I have no idea where did blkid get that false(?) uuid in my case from.
And make sure that you use the correct syntax: /dev/disk/by-uuid/.....

  • Getting ready for ext4

EDIT (18jan09): Since this thread was begun, pointone has added a wiki section on converting ext3 partitions to ext4. Find it here.
I guess this means I don't have much of a life, but I'm getting pretty excited about ext4. I haven't tried a new filesystem in ages.
There are good pages out there on ext4, such as this how-to and this overview. Still, I'm a little wobbly on just how the conversion/migration is going to go.
I won't be creating any ext4 partitions from scratch right away, but I'll be converting two partitions from ext3 to ext4. It looks as if this is all I'll have to do:
    (1) Use kernel 2.6.28 or later.
    (2) Make sure ext4 is enabled in my kernel config.
    (3) In /etc/fstab, change the file type of my two ext3 partitions to ext4.
Is this right? Is there anything else necessary?
    Now, here's an additional question:
If I want to apply extents to my existing ext3 partitions as I convert to ext4, do I have to do anything? I realize that in doing so, I will no long be able to access those formerly ext3 partitions as ext3. Or at least that's what I understand.
Last edited by dhave (2009-01-18 22:44:45)

O.K., after finally getting through this process of converting two partitions from ext3 to ext4, including my root (but *not* my boot, which I left as ext2) partition, here's the outline of what I had to do. If others could scan this for errors or missteps, or make other improvements, please do so.
Note that this is for converting an existing ext3 partition to ext4, not for creating a new ext4 partition from scratch (which is arguably easier and probably more efficient, since you'll have all ext4 features enabled from the beginning).
    Here's the procedure I followed:
    (1) Back up any ext3 partitions that you want to convert to ext4. I didn't have to use my backups, but I came very close to needing to, and it made the process much more pleasant knowing that I had the backups if I needed them.
    (2) Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, adding "ext4" to the "MODULES=" line. NOTE: If you're using mkinitcpio-0.5.20-1 or later and klibc-1.5.14-2 or later (both still in [Testing] repo as of 31dec08), this step may no longer be necessary. Edited on 31dec08.
    (3) Install kernel 2.6.28 or later. You can use Arch kernel26 from testing (as of 26dec08); just verify that the kernel version is at least 2.6.28. Ext4 is enabled by default in the kernel config. In the Arch kernel 2.6.28, ext4 is built by default as a module, which seems to be fine.
    (4) In /etc/fstab, change the file type of any ext3 partitions that you want to change to ext4. Don't change /boot to ext4 unless you've upgraded to grub2.
    (5) Now do the actual filesystem conversion using the tune2fs and fsck tools. These need to be run when your target filesystem is unmounted. So, take a recent LiveCD of some sort. NOTE: It needs to have a current version of e2fsprogs; I like SystemRescue 1.1.3, which has e2fsprogs 1.41.3. A current Arch install CD should serve, too, as long as it's recent. (I'd download and burn a fresh one just to make sure.)
    (a) Boot from the LiveCD, then run this on the filesystems you want to convert from ext3 to ext4:
    tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/yourfilesystem
    (b) After running this command you MUST run fsck. If you don't do it, Ext4 WILL NOT MOUNT your filesystem. This fsck run is needed to return the filesystem to a consistent state. It WILL tell you that it finds checksum errors in the group descriptors - it's expected, and it's exactly what it needs to be rebuilt to be able to mount it as Ext4, so don't get surprised by them. Since each time it finds one of those errors it asks you what to do, always say YES. If you don't want to be asked, add the "-p" parameter to the fsck command, it means "automatic repair":
    fsck -pf /dev/yourfilesystem
[This part is taken from the kernelnewbies page that shuay referred to above: http://kernelnewbies.org/Ext4 .]
On my 200Gb partition, I think fsck needed about 15 minutes to complete this, using the "-pf" switch.
    (6) Edit the grub /boot/grub/menu.lst file if you migrated your /root partition. Add this to the kernel line:
    rootfstype=ext4
NOTE: If you're using mkinitcpio-0.5.20-1 or later and klibc-1.5.14-2 or later (both still in [Testing] repo as of 31dec08), the step just above (#6) may no longer be necessary. Edited on 31dec08.
Note also that I'm using grub legacy (not grub2), so I didn't migrate my /boot partition and I was able to make grub changes in /boot/grub/menu.lst rather than the newer grub.cfg approach. I don't know what to do for Lilo, as I no longer use it.
    (7) If your main kernel doesn't boot, try the fallback.
That should do it. Please, if I've omitted something or goofed up otherwise, say so soon! I don't want to mess anyone else up.

  • No longer boots since update [kinit & call trace troubles]

    Hi all,
Recently I did a full system upgrade on a completely working system (running I assume was a 2.6.28 kernel26) that upgraded it to 2.6.29. It then stopped booting correctly. I left this for a while since I didn't have the time for messing around with it. Today I got back to it, used live cd, chrooted and did a full system update (to a 2.6.30 kernel) hoping it may have fixed it. No such luck.
Here is the error portion of the boot up/init:
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda3 ...
Root device '/dev/sda3' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
    /bin/mknod /dev/root b 8 3

    [<c0103d74>] ? syscall_call+0x7/0xb
My mkinitcpio.conf is untouched, as are the files in mkinitcpio.d.
    My FS is as follows:
    /dev/sda1 - ext2 - /boot
    /dev/sda2 - swap
    /dev/sda3 - ext3 - /
    /dev/sda4 - ext3 - /home
    My menu.1st for grub is:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 rootfstype=ext3 root=/dev/sda3 vga=791 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
The bizare thing is, if I change to root=/dev/sda4, I don't get 'root device doesn't exist etc etc etc' and it mounts it fine with no errors and then kinit drops to a recovery console instead of panicing.
I am not sure what to do now. Basically, what has changed since 2.6.28 that caused this in the first place?
Thanks in advance for any help!

This may sound like a silly question, but you did have /boot mounted within the chroot when the kernel installed right?
    --Does the arch-fallback initrd help?
--Boot into your recovery console and take a look at dmesg & /proc/partitions. Make sure your drives are being detected & what drives/partitions are where.
--More than one disk? ls /sys/block/[sh]d[a-z]/ should show you what partitions are on which disks.
-- Be sure root entry in /etc/fstab and on kernel command line are the same.
--More than one disk controller? Put the module in mkinitcpio.conf so the controller with your / on it gets loaded first  (I had fun and games with this during the ide -> pata switch)
+1 for the referencing partitions by UUID, you can also do it by filesystem label (root=/dev/disk/by-[label,uuid]/XXXX)

  • Previewing site in browser

When I go to preview my site in the browser everything loads
fine the first time around, but then when I try to go back to a
page (say the homepage) I get a pop up message that says "No file
exists at the address "name of address" " What do I need to do to
    fix this? Thanks.

    TMPif1avfzt2h.htm
that is a temporary file that Dw creates when you press f12.
Dw erases it when you are done using it.
basically- don't worry about it. The f12 local "preview in
    browser" page is
just that, a preview of the CURRENT page you are working on.
    Dw converts any
root relative paths to document relative.
When you click a link on this f12 preview in browser page,
    you are looking
at the files directly from the hard drive, with no conversion
    of root
relative paths. That's why some images were missing in your
    previous
    question.
What i'm guessing now is that you using F12, and viewing the
    TMP page.
Then clicking a link on it, and viewing a page directly 'as
    is' on the hard
    drive.
then clicking a link on THAT page, which is root relative.
So the browser is told to go to:
    C:/pagename.html which doesn't exist.
    Fix method number one:
Ignore it. If this site has it's own domain name, and is
    correctly defined,
it will work as intended when uploaded. The F12 preview in
    browser will
work. Just don't go clicking links on the F12 temp page.
If it bothers you, hunt down and change any root relative
    paths to document
    relative paths.

  • Filesystem Error (UDev and mounting)

I'm having trouble with my filesystem(s) on startup. These problems began after I cleaned my case using compressed air / vacuum, though I don't think I jostled any hardware. My original filesystem was set up like this:
    /dev/sda1 NTFS WinXP partition
    /dev/sda2 XFS /var
    /dev/sda3 EXT3 root
    /dev/sda4 extended
    /dev/sda5 EXT3 /home
    /dev/sda6 swap
    /dev/sdb1 XFS /digitalmedia
On startup, UDev starts and Modules are loaded, then I make it to:
    :: Checking Filesystems [BUSY]
    /dev/sda3: clean, 87750/977280 files, 668803/3905803 blocks
/dev/sda5 is mounted. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.
    /sbin/fsck.xfs: XFS file system. [FAIL]

If I log in as root, /proc/mounts contains this:
    rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0

As you can see, 4 partitions are mounted under /media/* instead of their appropriate locations. At this point, I rebooted to SystemRescue LiveCD and issued e2fsck -f commands for the (unmounted) EXT3 partitions:

At this point, I'm not exactly sure where the problem is. I suspect that the filesystems themselves are ok (based on the liveCD tests), so perhaps the problem is the filesystems are inappropriately mounted under /media/* when they are not supposed to (ie before fsck during startup). Also, UDev (which I assume does this mounting) thinks these partitions are USB HD type directories instead of internal SATA partitions. Finally, the errors in dmesg referring to the flexcop module might be a red herring? Please help - I'm not sure what next step to take.

Thanks for your reply. I did not disconnect any SATA leads. I mainly cleaned the CPU heatsink and fan.
I am able to boot through UDev and get to filesystems checks without the LiveCD. More specifically, on boot without the live CD, both drives are recognized by the bios and Grub 1.5 is loaded, presenting options to boot into Arch Linux, Arch Linux Fallback, or Windows. If I select Arch Linux, boot messages scroll by, then I see:

    (or type Control-D to continue):
At this prompt, if I press Control-D, the system reboots. If I log in using the root password, I see a root prompt. At this point, /proc/mounts already has partitions in it under /media (again this is without any LiveCD). Each directories' contents under media seem normal.
Interestingly, as I posted above, mount reports that both /dev/disk/by-uuid/dc4661 and /dev/sda3 are mounted (to / and /media/usbhd-sda3, respectively), although this is actually the same partition.
I should mention I have also run the bootable disk utilities provided by Seagate and WD for each drive and have run their diagnostic studies, which were unrevealing (each ran for ~1.5 hours).
After seeing the sda1 error messages in dmesg, I booted to WinXP from GRUB. CHKDSK ran and the system booted normally. I ran CHKDSK again from within WinXP as well which revealed no errors. Then, booting into Arch produces a few new errors in dmesg (which are probably irrelevant to the main problem):
    NTFS volume version 3.1.
NTFS-fs warning (device sda1): load_system_files(): Unsupported volume flags 0x4000 encountered.
NTFS error (device sda1): load_system_files(): Volume has unsupported flags set. Mounting read-only. Run chkdsk and mount in Windows.
I don't know if the problem is at the BIOS/hw, partition table, GRUB, UDev, etc.
