Convert from CPI to MOV

I just bought a canon, I didn't know that I had to change the format to standard. Now it's too late how can I convert my videos from CPI to a friendly version to mac's so I can edited in Final Cut? is there a free software for this kind of case?

A Canon what? Canon makes dozens of cameras and they aren't all the same. Have you checked Canon's website for a plugin to work with the footage?

Files converted from .mod to .mov have no audio in QT

I recorded some video on my sister's JVC camera and then she used her PC to convert the .mod files (which the camera creates) to .mov files. When I play them on my Macbook with QT Pro or iMovie, though, there is no audio. The Movie Inspector and Movie Properties both say there is audio (AAC, Stereo), but nothing will play it. I've tried downloading a few codecs, including Perian, but so far nothing has helped. It doesn't look like the audio is playing in the DivX Player, either. Anyone have any ideas?

No. Use the "Properties" window. It can indicate independendent data rates for each track. In this case your audio data rate is only 2.272 Kbps. For optimum playback of a 48 KHz track you would want to use a data rate of 160 Kbps (128 Kbps for a 44.1 KHz sampling rate. Reconvert the original file using an audio data rate in the minimum to optimum range for your specific audio sampling rate. If you have QT 7 Pro installed, look at the "Movie to MPEG-4" audio tab preset to see a list of possible combinations for a given audio sampling rate. Any grayed out combination would not acceptable for use on a Mac and QT Pro would not allow you to select such a combination. Unfortunately, your work flow does not appear to have such safeguards. While you could target any of the acceptible combinations when you re-convert the files, the most common/optimum ones for movie files are 128 Kbps @ 44.1 KHz and 160 Kbps @ 48 KHz assumimng a good audio source.
OTHER COMMENTS: Your video data rate is also low for its 853x480 dimensions. (I.e., your target video data rate would normally be used for a 480x270 iPhone conversion and the MPEG-4 video compression is only about 40% to 50% as efficient as H.264 video compression format. Since you seem to be having problems chosing conversion settings, I would recommend using an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) here. It is available for use on both Mac and PC platforms and is supposed to be able to handle MOD files. However, believe this requires MPEG-2 support which costs $19.99 for the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component for use on a Mac or can be free in the form of the KL QuickTime Alternative for use on a PC. Just be sure to reade the install requirements for whichever platform you plan to use. Once installed, use the "Export to MPEG-4" File menu option to open the main conversion window and then press the "iTunes" button to select a specific device target (i.Phone, iPod, or TV) option having the desired predefined settings you wish to use.

Are you asking if there's a way to export from mpegstreamclip so you don't need to render when you edit with the file in fcp? If so, yes... (sorry couldn't resist).
What format is your sequence in fcp (make the timeline active and hit command(apple)-zero? Note the pixel dimensions, frame rate and compressor settings and set the quicktime options in mpegstreamclip export dialog to match them. You should be good to go.

That would depend on your work flow. MOV is the generic QuickTime file container and is not related to any particular data compression format. If you perform a simple "Save" or "Save As..." action that merely copies the data in the WAV file to an MOV file, then the data remains unchanged and maintains its original quality. If, on the other hand, your transcode/re-compress the original data to a different compression format, then there is always the potential for some loss in quality. Depending on the codec and/or settings, the potential loss could be inaudible to severe.

Converting from QuickTime movie to AVI

I see a lot of questions about converting from .avi to Quicktime but how do I accomplish a conversion from a Quicktime .mov format to an .avi format?
The reason I ask is because I emailed someone a QuickTime movie and he could not view it and asked for me to send an .avi. I 'think' he's on a PC. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You can use this freeware to make the conversion:
Mpeg StreamClip
or you can buy the QT Pro license and use it. With Pro you open the mov file and use Export in the file menu to make the conversion. More details on using Pro are in the QT 7 guide available here:

.mov files converted from .mkv have no sound?

I had a .mkv file compressed from a while back and converted it to a .mov (H.264) file. There is no sound, although the video is perfect. I tried to convert another file and it did the same thing - no sound, just dead silence.
Why is this happening?

Conversion of video can be slow on any computer, obviously older and lower end equipment will be the slowest.
.mov is a container for video, audio and other types of files, before you can carry out any conversions you need to know the format of the video and audio tracks within that container as not all conversion software will deal with all formats. Let us know more about your video and we can make suggestions for suitable software.

I'm guessing that your using One Step DVD . This will only work with one movie at a time.
Create a new project and all you should have to do is drag your movies from your movie folder onto your iDVD project. You can add as many movies as you like but obviously you can't exceed the maximum total DVD size.
Encoding can take a long time depending on the original file format, but you should be able to use pretty much any file format you can play with Quicktime.

Converting from a Business View connection to a non-Business View connectio

I have a report on our Crystal Reports Server that I need to move to a machine with Crystal Reports XI installed and no connection to the Business Objects Server.
When I create an ODBC connection pointing to the same table and then try to use Set Datasource Location to Update the Data Source I get an errormessage:
Converting from a Business View connection to a non-Business View connection is not supported.
What can I do? It is a complex report that I don't want to take the time and energy to rewrite.

I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:

and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).

How to convert from PAL to NTSC in compressor

I have a project I converted from mp4 file to Apple Pro Res to edit it in FCP. I exported using Compressor and tried to import the files to DVD Studio Pro. It said it can't put PAL files into an NTSC project. I didn't even realize it was filmed in PAL (yes, I have the rights to use the footage). How do I convert the files from PAL to put it into FCP...in Compressor? If so, how? Thanks for any help!

Since you've already edited it, export from fcp (file: export: quicktime movie - NOT quicktime conversion) with current settings. Bring this file into compressor and apply the appropriate dvd preset. Thencustomize the preset, changing the frame rate to 29.97 fps and video format to ntsc in the encoder panel: the pixel dimensions in the geometry panel to 720x480 (not sure if this is necessary, but doublecheck it). Then in the frame controls panel, enable frame controls and change the resize filter to best, and rate conversion to 100% of source and rate conversion to best. This may take a long time to output, so you might want to do a short test by setting an in and out in the compressor preview window.
Hopefully, I haven't left anything out. If there are any questions, post back.

We are currently using RoboHelp 5, our projects are all
WebHelp projects, and they are all in RoboSource Control (RSC). Our
corporate office purchased licenses for us to move to RoboHelp 8.
Any suggestions on the best way to proceed?
As a precaution, we are planning to keep one of our RH5
licenses installed on a standalone PC and move copies of the
project out of RSC to that PC. Our initial attempts to move the
projects out of RSC using RH5's remove project from RSC option have
not been successful. Even with the folders renamed, the projects
still open as if they are in source control. Two questions here.
First, do you think this precaution is necessary? Second, if it is,
any suggestions on removing projects from RSC?
Does RH8 convert projects that are already in RSC?
One of our other companies converted from RH6 to RH8 and
experienced issues with losing styles. Our projects use customized
skins and customized .css pages. One of the customizations to the
skins was provided on this forum years ago; we added a print tab
with the option to print a WebHelp topic. Will RH8 convert the
skins and css pages?
After we install RH8, will we still be able to work with our
projects in RH5 as long as we haven't converted the individual
projects to RH8?

Making a backup is simple. Open Windows Explorer and make a copy of the project folder. Place the copy in a different location. Network server, Thumb drive, CD/DVD, etc.
